1 Myers Park High School Men s Lacrosse 2018 Mission Statement The goal of the Myers Park High School lacrosse program is to help the athletes who are a part of the program become better young men, students, and lacrosse players. If the young men who participate are only taught lacrosse, they have been done a disservice! Program Philosophy The philosophy of the program is to first teach young men core values to help them succeed off the field. We will work hard to be our best and also learn through our failures. Teamwork, commitment, sacrifice, selflessness, love and support are the pillars we will build our program on, day in and day out. When we embrace these words, and work hard putting these words into action, we will become better young men and students, which will make us a better lacrosse team. Expectations of Players and Parents/Guardians 1. Family is first, academics second, lacrosse third. I will respect and honor my parents/guardians, and understand that I must maintain the minimum grade-point average required of CMS studentathletes in order to be eligible to play lacrosse Initial (Player) a. My family and I have read, understand, and will comply with all CMS eligibility requirements for high school athletics outlined at the CMS Athletics website listed below in section (i)..initial (Player) / Initial (Parent/Guardian) i Selflessness: I will be a team player regardless of my role with the team, or how much or little I play. I will strive to get better, and as result, the team will be better. There is no room for selfish players Initial (Player) 3. Priority: Parents/guardians and players understand that the Myers Park Men s Lacrosse Program and its instruction has priority over any travel/showcase team or event from February 13th through May 20 th. Parents/guardians and players commit to participate in Myers Park Lacrosse events and practices when those events and practices conflict with travel/showcase practices or events Initial (Player) 4. Commitment: I understand that we will only be as good as the player who least buys in to what we are doing...initial (Player) 5. Ownership: Like everything in life, I am responsible for my actions and must take ownership of my development as a person, family member, student, player, and teammate..initial (Player) 6. Hustle: I will hustle on and off the field and between practice stations. Lack of hustle will impact my chance of playing Initial (Player) 7. Compete: I understand I must earn a roster spot and playing time. Our attitude must be we are willing to play anybody anywhere anytime..initial (Player) 1
2 8. Roles: I understand that not everyone will get the same amount of playing time..initial (Player) 9. Practice with purpose: I understand practice is not just about working hard; it is about working the right way with a purpose..initial (Player) a. I will complete my daily workouts every day to the best of my availability..initial (Player) b. I will put in additional time outside of team practice and my daily workouts to improve because I know my teammates and coaches are counting on me..initial (Player) c. I will pay attention to coaches, and listen, not talk, while they are speaking..initial (Player) 10. Student-Athlete-Gentleman - I understand I am a student-athlete and I will act respectfully toward parents/guardians, other students, teachers, administrators and coaches..initial (Player) a. I will not talk back to my coaches or parents/guardians. I am grateful for all that they do for me..initial (Player) b. I will help pick up all trash and agree to not leave until the sidelines are spotless after practice and games..initial (Player) c. I will not talk back to, or use profanity toward, or argue with other players or coaches (MPHS or opponents) or referees during practice or games; and I understand that failure to comply may result in extra conditioning or reduced playing time..initial (Player) d. I will not engage in fighting during practices or games, as determined by any official or MPHS Men s Lacrosse coach. I understand that failure to comply with this provision may result in a one or more game suspension, and/or dismissal from the team as determined by Coach Myers and the MPHS Men s Lacrosse Board..Initial (Player) e. As a MPHS varsity student-athlete, I am bound to all rules of behavior required by CMS, Myers Park High School and its athletic department..initial (Player) 11. MPHS Men s Lacrosse Social Media Policies a. Players may have private accounts on social media that can only be seen or accessed by those they permit to see their profile..initial (Player) b. Players are required to permit their parents/guardians and MPHS Lacrosse coaches to follow their social media accounts..initial (Player) c. Posting inappropriate comments on a coach s or player s social media account is strictly prohibited..initial (Player) 2
3 d. I understand that MPHS Men s Lacrosse Social Media Policies are intended to protect me from making poor decisions that may come back to hurt me in the future, e.g., during my college admissions process or my eventual job search..initial (Player) e. I understand that any violation of MPHS Men s Lacrosse Social Media Policies may result in suspension from team activities and possible dismissal from the team..initial (Player) 12. Accountability: I understand that I am accountable for my actions to myself, to my family, to my coaches, and to my team..initial (Player) 13. Punctuality: I will be on time. If I cannot be on time I will contact Coach Myers by phone ( ) or (bmyers2@gmail.com) BEFORE THE PRACTICE or GAME to explain why I am going to be late, not when I finally arrive. I understand that failure to be dressed and ready to participate in any practice or game by the time required by Coach Myers may result in extra conditioning and or reduced playing time..initial (Player) a. Unless injured or otherwise prohibited by authorities or MPHS, players are required to attend all practices and games, without exception, and failure to attend either without first clearing with Coach Myers may result in playing time restriction, or one or more game(s) suspension. If you are injured, you are still required to attend practices and games unless your parent/guardian/doctor advise/require not to do so..initial (Player) / Initial (Parent/Guardian) b. IF A PLAYER MISSES A PRACTICE OR GAME DUE TO AN UNEXCUSED ABSENCE, HE WILL NOT PLAY IN THE NEXT GAME. SECOND OFFENSE IS THE LOSS OF TWO GAMES. THE THIRD OFFENSE MAY RESULT IN SUSPENSION FROM ALL TEAM ACTIVITIES..Initial (Player) / Initial (Parent/Guardian) 14. Issue Resolution: The chain of command for resolving player issues with coaches or other players is as follows. a. The Athlete first communicates the issue with the coach. If the issue is not resolved, the athlete next communicates the issue with the head coach (if different). If the issue is still not resolved, the athlete s parent/guardian may then contact one or more MPHS Men s Lacrosse Board member(s) in writing or in person. If in person, the parent/guardian must arrange to meet with two or more MPHS Men s Lacrosse Board members, who may require participation by the MPHS Athletic Director and School Principal. Parents/guardians may not contact any coach without prior MPHS Men s Lacrosse Board approval and involvement..initial (Player) / Initial (Parent/Guardian) 15. I understand that the fee paid to Myers Park Lacrosse ensures my son gets to work in the offseason program, go through tryouts, and compete for a spot and playing time on the team..initial (Player) / Initial (Parent/Guardian) 16. I understand that playing time is an issue between my son and his coaches. If my son is unhappy with his playing time, I agree to not get involved and to encourage my son to address the issue directly with the coaches..initial (Parent) 3
4 17. As a parent/guardian, I will endeavor to attend all games and support the team with spirit-wear, and with good, positive behavior I will refrain from any negative media or audible public comments on coaches or players (both MPHS and opponents)..initial (Parent/Guardian) 18. I understand that being a referee in any sport is a difficult task, and particularly in lacrosse, where many rules allow for discretion on the part of the referees. I promise to treat the referees with respect, even when I disagree with any of their decisions. I agree to model good sportsmanship for my son by the way I treat the referees...initial (Parent/Guardian) a. I have read and will strive to live up to the Coach for America s Parent/Guardian Code of Conduct below..initial (Parent/Guardian) 4
