THREE PAC-10 TEAMS ALIVE IN NCAA SECOND ROUND Three Pac-10 teams remain alive in the 2003 NCAA Men's College Cup, with second round play beginning Wednesday... Two-time Pac-10 Champion and defending NCAA Champion UCLA (18-1-1, Pac-10) is one of two Conference teams extended byes in the first round of play... The Bruins begin defense of their NCAA title when they host Tulsa ( )... The two teams have met once before, resulting in a 6-0 UCLA win during the 1993 season... The WASHINGTON Huskies (12-4-2, 5-4-1) also received a bye and host Northwest rival Portland (10-8-1)... UW defeated Portland during the regular season, winning 1-0 at home on Sept The CALIFORNIA Golden Bears (11-8-2, 5-4-1) advanced to the NCAA second round for the second consecutive year, defeating San Jose State 2-1 in opening round action last week... Cal travels south to take on 11th-seeded UC Santa Barbara, the same team it ousted in the second round of last year's tournament. Washington has been among the tournament field in eight of the last nine seasons, while Cal is making its third straight NCAA Championship appearance... Cal hosted an NCAA Tournament first round game this season for the first time since 1981, defeating San Josse State The Bears, winners of four in a row and six of their last eight, will meet the Gauchos for the first time since last year's NCAA second round matchup... Cal downed UCSB 2-1 in Berkeley in that meeting... Last year, Cal advanced to the NCAA s Round of 16 for the first time in school history, but was eliminated by eventual national champion UCLA, Cal is 0-8 in postseason road games. The Bruins received an automatic bid into the NCAA Championship after capturing their second straight Pac-10 championship... UCLA s No. 1- seeding is the programs first since the NCAA began seeding the tournament in The Bruins have advanced to the NCAA Championships in each of the last 21 years... UCLA has met Tulsa just once before, defeating the Golden Hurricane 6-0 in UCLA's NCAA appearance is its 21st in a row and 31st overall... The Bruins' NCAA streak is the second-longest in the nation, while its 31 total appearances are second to only St. Louis' The Bruins have captured NCAA titles in 1985, 1990, 1997 and 2002, while their all-time NCAA record stands at (.658). WASHINGTON: The No. 10 seed in the NCAA Championship, Washington received a first-round bye and hosts Portland (10-8-1), which defeated Oregon State 3-2 in first round play... The Huskies make their return to postseason play and their 15th NCAA berth overall following a one-year absence... This year s berth is the eighth in the last nine seasons for Washington... UW defeated Portland 1-0 at home on Sept Washington has an all-time record of 5-15 in NCAA Tournament play, advancing as far as the second round six times... The Huskies' last postseason appearance in 2001 saw UW also receive a first-round bye before hosting Portland in the second-round and falling to the Pilots, A win over Portland would mark the Huskies' first-ever trip to NCAA third-round play PAC-10 MEN'S SOCCER HONORS PAC-10 PLAYER OF THE YEAR: MATT TAYLOR, SR F, UCLA A senior forward from Irvine, Calif., Taylor is the leading scorer on a balanced UCLA squad that claimed its second straight Pac-10 Championship with a perfect league record. The No. 1-ranked Bruins ( overall) begin defense of their NCAA title Wednesday. Taylor paces the Conference in goals, with 13 in 19 games this year, and also ranks first in the league in points (33) and game-winning goals (6). He averages 1.74 points per game, tied for 17th in the nation, to lead a high-powered offense that has scored 26 goals in its last 10 matches. His three career hat tricks, including two this season, set the new UCLA record. Taylor also tied the school record for most multliple-goal games in a season, with four on the year. A two-time honorable mention All-Pac-10 selection entering this season, Taylor was twice named Pac-10 Player of the Week this season (Sept. 2, Oct. 21) and the College Soccer News National Player of the Week (Oct. 19). He was a three-time Soccer America Team of the Week honoree in PAC-10 CO-FRESHMEN/NEWCOMERS OF THE YEAR: ROBBIE FINDLEY, FR F, OREGON STATE & CHAD BARRETT, FR F UCLA Findley, a freshman forward from Phoenix, Ariz., helped lead the Beavers to a overall record, a second-place finish in the Pac-10 (7-3-0) and Oregon State s second straight NCAA Championship berth. His 0.53 goals per game average is also tops among Pac- 10 freshmen and ranks third overall in the Conference. Findley ranks fourth in the Pac-10 in points (22) and points per game (1.16 avg). From Oct. 31 to Nov. 7, he put together a streak of four goals in three games. Klaas, WASH Barrett, a freshman forward from Beaverton, Ore., has started 15 of 20 games for the Bruins and teams with Pac-10 Player of the Year Matt Taylor to lead the league s most potent offense. Barrett ranks second on the squad in goals (9), points (26) and assists (8), a key component on a UCLA scoring offense that ranks fourth in the nation (2.45 gpg). Barrett leads the Pac-10 in shots (58) and shots per game (2.90 avg), while his 1.30 points per game average is the league s second-best mark. His 26 points are the most for a Bruin freshman in 13 years, since Joe-Max Moore amassed 32 in He has one three-assist, one-goal game (vs. Penn State in his collegiate debut) and one three-assist, two-goal game (vs Cal State Fullerton) to his credit. Barrett was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week for Sept and made the College Soccer News Team of the Week for Sept. 14. PAC-10 COACH OF THE YEAR TOM FITZGERALD, UCLA In Fitzgerald s second year leading the UCLA program, the Bruins captured their second straight Pac-10 title and are the favorite (No. 1 seed) to repeat as national champions in the NCAA College Cup. Fitzgerald s 2003 squad became the first Pac-10 men s soccer team to run the table (10-0-0) in Conference play. The Bruins dominated the Pac-10, as they lead the league eight of nine statistical categories, including goals (49), points (155), assists (57), goals allowed (8) and goals against average (0.40). UCLA is also the nation s co-leader in shutout percentage, with 15 shutouts in 20 games (0.75) this season. Under his watch, the Bruins put together a 15-game winning streak from Sept. 7 to Nov. 9, and are unbeaten in their last 17 matches. His top-ranked Bruins also received the NCAA Tournament s No.1 seed for the first time since the organization began seeding the field in The former head coach at the University of Tampa ( ), Fitzgerald served as head coach of the Columbus Crew of the MLS from ).
