3 MISCELLANEOUS TEAM DEN NOTES THE CURTAIN GOES UP The Grizzlies open up their 9 th season tonight against the Boston Celtics. The Grizzlies are 2-6 all-time in season openers. Here is a look at how they have fared on opening night in their first eight seasons: Season Date Opponent Result Nov. 3/95 Portland Won, at Portland Nov. 1/96 Portland Lost, at Vancouver Oct. 31/97 Dallas Lost, at Vancouver Feb. 7/99 Sacramento Lost, at Sacramento Nov. 2/99 Portland Lost, at Vancouver Oct. 31/00 Seattle Won, at Vancouver Nov. 1/01 Detroit Lost, at Memphis Oct. 30/02 Dallas Lost, at Memphis AIMING TO BREAK A TREND Tonight, the new-look Grizzlies aim to change things this season right from the beginning. Since the move to Memphis, the Grizzlies have struggled from the starting gate for the regular season. Last season, the Grizzlies began with a 0-13 record (0-8 under then Head Coach Sidney Lowe before his resignation) before earning the first win on Nov. 23, 2002 over the Washington Wizards at the Pyramid, In the inaugural season in Memphis, the Grizzlies began 0-8 before earning the franchise s first win as the Memphis Grizzlies, 98-93, on Nov. 17 over the Cleveland Cavaliers. The team s best starts occurred in with a 4-1 record and in with a 2-0 record. TEAM RECORDS AGAINST THE CELTICS Although the Grizzlies and Celtics have only met 15 times, the Grizzlies have set two significant team records against them. On January 15, 1998, Bryant Reeves scored 41 points in a Grizzlies loss in Boston. Those 41 points still stand as the team record for most points scored by a Grizzlies player in a game. Also, the next season, the teams met in Vancouver, and played the longest game in Grizzlies history, a thrilling triple-overtime game that ended in a Celtics win. The 129 points the Grizzlies scored still ranks as the highest point total in a game in team history, while Boston s 131 points is the second most points allowed by the Grizzlies in team history. MICHAEL DICKERSON ANNOUNCES HIS RETIREMENT Grizzlies President of Basketball Operations Jerry West announced on Oct. 25 that guard Michael Dickerson and the team reached an agreement for his retirement due to chronic pain caused by a groin strain and sports hernia injuries. To complete the deal, the Grizzlies waived Dickerson on Oct. 27. Dickerson, acquired by the Grizzlies in a three-way trade with the Houston Rockets and Orlando Magic on Aug. 27, 1999, ends his career ranked among the top five of career leaders in 12 team categories. Through five NBA seasons and 212 games played, Dickerson averaged 15.4 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.6 assists and a field goal shooting percentage of 43.2 percent. This is a sad day for me. I am grateful to the entire Grizzlies organization for their unwavering support and encouragement throughout my career and especially the lengthy process to attempt to rehab my injuries, said Dickerson. Playing in the NBA allowed this kid born in South Carolina and raised in Seattle to share the court with the greatest players in the game, and I have a lifetime of memories. I want to thank Mr. Heisley, Jerry West, Coach Brown, my teammates and Grizzlies fans worldwide, but especially in Memphis and Vancouver. Dickerson participated briefly in the first day for veterans to participate in training camp on Sept. 30. He has not played in any pre-season games this year. Dickerson played in just six games last season and was placed on the injured list twice, missing 44 games from Nov. 8-Feb. 5, and missing 23 more games after being placed on the injured list on Mar. 3 for the remainder of the season. In , he played in the teams first four games and averaged 10.8 ppg and 3.0 rpg before suffering another injury that ended his season. IS THE WINNING PRESEASON A SIGN OF THINGS TO COME? The Grizzlies finished the preseason with a record of 7-1 (6-1 vs. NBA teams), by far the best preseason showing in the team s eight-year history. The previous best preseason was 4-4, achieved in the Grizzlies first preseason in Memphis in The team also won three preseason road games, surpassing the team record with three consecutive preseason wins at FC Barcelona in Spain, and at Miami and Chicago. The Grizzlies averaged 94.8 ppg during the preseason, but even more impressive was their defense, as they held opponents to only 85.1 ppg, including a great performance on Oct. 17 when they held Tracy McGrady and the Orlando Magic to only 65 points. Pau Gasol finished the preseason as the team's leading scorer, as he poured in 15.9 ppg, including a 26-point outing against Orlando. Gasol also finished as the team's leading rebounder, pulling down 6.9 rpg, including 10 vs. San Antonio on Oct. 8. Jason Williams led the team assists, with 5.5 apg. His high was 8, which he had vs. Milwaukee in the preseason opener on Oct. 6. BOLSTERING THE LINUEP The offseason saw the Grizzlies make a number of personnel moves to improve their lineup. 14 GRIZZLIES HEAD COACH HUBIE BROWN The Memphis Grizzlies took a positive leap back to the future when Hubert (Hubie) Jude Brown, one of the premier basketball minds in the business, returned from retirement as an NBA head coach to become the Grizzlies sixth head coach on November 12, Brown, 69, returns to coaching after leading the New York Knicks to two playoff appearances during five seasons ( ) and the Atlanta Hawks to three playoff appearances in five seasons ( 76-81) and spending the last 15 years teaching coaching clinics and serving as an NBA broadcast analyst for three television networks. Over a 30-year successful basketball career - 12 spent with the NBA - Brown has coached teams to five NBA playoff appearances and a championship in the ABA (American Basketball Association). He began his coaching career on the high school level at St. Mary s School in Little Falls, NY (nine years) and then served as an assistant coach for one year at William & Mary (1968) and four years at Duke University ( 69-72). He first moved to the NBA in 72 as an assistant coach with the Milwaukee Bucks. After two NBA seasons, Brown accepted an opportunity to serve as head coach of the ABA s Kentucky Colonels, winning the Colonels only ABA championship in franchise history in 75 and reaching the ABA playoffs semifinals in 76. After the ABA and NBA merged in 1976 and the Colonels franchise folded, Brown returned to the NBA as head coach of the Hawks. He finished his first year in Atlanta in sixth place with a record. The following season, Brown orchestrated a dramatic improvement in his second season as the Hawks became recognized as a Cinderella team with the youngest cast of players and lowest payroll in the NBA to earn a spot in the playoffs for the first time in five years. He was named NBA Coach of Year in 77 and CBS Coach of the Year in 78. The Hawks captured the Central Division Title with a record for the season. He compiled a (.489) all-time record with the Hawks, ranking fourth among coaches in franchise history. Brown continued his coaching career with the Knicks and led the team to consecutive playoff appearances ( and 83-84), guiding New York to a memorable first-round playoff victory over the Detroit Pistons in 84. He compiled an 8-10 playoff record in two years, ranking fifth among top coaches in Knicks playoff history. He also ranks among the top five in Knicks coaches history with a (.413) overall record. Brown s all-time record as an NBA coach is (.454). Since 1982, Brown has served as a sports analyst for both college and pro basketball broadcasts. After leaving the Knicks in 86-87, Brown became the lead analyst at CBS in 1988 where he served for two years. He also worked for the Philadelphia 76ers and Detroit Pistons local broadcasts during the season in addition to serving as lead analyst with the TNT network for 12 years. He was nominated for a Sports Emmy in 94 and 99.
