Basic Skills for Women's Lacrosse Jennifer Lee, Menlo School A few Guidelines: Make it FUN! Especially for the younger ones Use eggs or water balloons to teach the "give" concept Use games Keep players moving vs. stationary Emphasize passing even for young/new players vs. running to goal All age groups can improve their basic skills Cradling Pick-ups Right hand on top Left hand on top Different levels Away from body - stick Parallel to ground Toward body - perpendicular Dodges Switch Roll Strong side Passing (all levels) Passing (add D) Shooting Drills Games High In front Left hand Non-stick side (don't say weak) Bounce Force weak Pass blocking Bounce Shot Placement High Corner "Number" the cage see handouts see handouts Always Remember: To teach the basics, Repetition is KEY. Developing skills for new players takes time,...be patient :)

Drills Forum Jill Malko, Head Coach, UC Berkeley Make them competitive: Count catches (not misses keep it positive) Make punishment fun donkey kicks, shoulder massage, move goals: No running! Have a Blue v Gold day Be creative Steal from other sports Ask your team for ideas Make them up Change how you break up groups, birthdays, height, trivia question, chose your own captain, pre-assign them Keep them quick Have groups made up Set up cones ahead of time have a map Stop them when they aren t working Cradle and Partner Possession Teaching the cradle possession drill with dummy defense First teach the cradle then work into partner possession Stick separation Progress to non-dominant hand, switching, walk the dog Do this for 30 sec intervals progress to punishment for dropping the ball or D not getting ball Add in downfield help What to emphasize Finger and wrist movements for more control (do not teach old style open and close the gate) Stay confident, stay in control (not over cradling ) Keep vision Triangle Drill Groups of 6, no more than 9 Set cones up in triangle configuration 10 yds apart Tell pattern to team i.e. pass right, cut left change direction Build to fake right, pass left, cut right, due for time limit count catches What to emphasize: Pass and cut away from ball Ask while you are cutting away always be a threat Cut away with speed Three person to goal Drill Similar to 3 man weave but no cuts behind Let wings get head start Finish with shot on cage may want to cone off shooting area Switch sides ball starts on can add D Variation for double team drill blow whistle and two with out ball become D What to emphasize: Leading passes

Post Drill Start with 2 post players about 10 yds apart each have a ball One player in middle works in straight line (for secs or minimum number of catches) catching, cradle and pass back What to emphasize Emphasize pivot and running towards ball Active Post players Three person passing Drill Put out sets of cones about yards apart Break team into groups of 3 or 4 and all stand behind same cone with 1-2 balls Work for 30 second interval Second person in line has ball, on whistle first player runs out to cone, pivots, cuts back to ball, second person passes to her and then takes off to repeat Have second ball for misses make player who misses chase her ball Can begin with ball with first person, run out cradling, pivot and throw ball back Build to left hand, over the shoulder, groundball towards (roll ball out before she pivots), ground ball away (roll ball out first) Count number of catches losers do donkey kicks or whatever What to emphasize; Full speed on catch or g-ball Keep between shoulders Talk on g-balls especially Passers must make good passes to players stick Big G-Ball Drill Set out four cones yds apart, set up 4-5 balls at diagonal cones Split team into 4 groups behind the cones Two coaches/rollers at ball stations Players move like a shuttle, staying on one half of the grid Drill starts simultaneously as both coaches roll out one ball for first girl in line ground ball pick up away Player picks up ball, and throws to helping line opposite, line that catches ball cradles it to the end of the opposite line and gives ball to coach After passing to helping line, the original player looks to diagonal coach for ground ball away, coach rolls it to her, player picks it up and brings ball to coach and then jogs back to her side to join helping line Build to bouncing balls and add in defense. Move lines closer together What to emphasize: Talking: Ball down, I got ball, here s your help, Hey coach wake up! Pick up with speed Pick up ball in small area, don t hang stick, change angle after pick up Fireball Break up into teams of 3 and one goalie and one feeder (coach) Work for short time periods 2 minutes 3 v 3 around the 12 meter Make it take, one point for goal, (build to one point for caused turnover), one point for fireball Start with fireball ball thrown high and point for catching it in air

Every drop and change of possession the ball must be thrown to coach/feeder who looks for give and go coach can not score but should be active What to emphasize: Pass and cut Give and go s Balance field, stay spread Wu s Drill Teams of 4 Two squares of 10 x 10yds sharing center line Start with 4 blue out on cone and one gold playing d Blue gets one point for every four passes, after every 4 passes, another gold d adds in Turnovers and dropped balls teams switch to adjacent grid with 4 gold out on cones and 1 blue playing d Goes back and forth until one team scores a dedicated number of points What to emphasize: Good clean passing Asking and passing away from D Defense taking a lane/side away Defense communication Breakout Break into two teams of 5 or 6 Each team plays attack for 5 times, switch and then play D for 5 times Attack starts with ball at mid-field, D at restraining line Coach blow whistle and attack can send out 1, or 2, or 3, or 4, or 5 players same for D - could be player up or down Attack scores 1 pt for goal, D scores point for bringing beyond restraining line. Teams score two points if they are a player down. Limit time between sets, may want to limit time on each turn What to emphasize: Player up or down situations recognize it Communication There is a strategy let them figure it out 1v1 from behind, top and wings Attack set-up: Attacker from top, set up just outside the 12m attacker from wings, just outside the corners of the 8m attacker behind, directly behind to attack either side of cage. Emphasis: Quick, explosive move to the cage, do not dance around to long dodges, keep eyes facing towards the cage, unless you are in a quick roll move, protect your stick, see goalie when shooting. Defense Set-up: Defense starts on ball, forcing, do not give the attacker a running start, when ball is behind, defender is in front of cage,

close the space Emphasis: Body positioning, stick positioning is up and down, not dropped, footwork, angles of defense, limiting attacker to a low angle shot 3v3 s with pass or ground ball from the top Set-up: 3 marked pairs are set up below the 40-yd line The coach or another player can either pass or roll the ball into a designated pair, the other 2 pairs are holding low, getting ready to make a cut to the ball once the initial attacker has the ball Emphasis: Attack is working on movement with and without ball, quick cuts to ball, making space, working in two s to get open Defense is working on seeing player and seeing ball, tight pressure on and off ball, getting around picks, good fundamental defense Fundamental in lacrosse is finding the 2v1! Player up situations 2v1, 3v2, 4v3 Set-up: (2v1) 1 marked pair, 1 free player coming down (3v2) 2 marked pairs low, 1 free player coming through (4v3) 3 marked pairs low, 1 free player coming through Can add a recovering defending in all of them Emphasis Attack: Keeping space, draw defender and dump to free player, get in the passing lanes, do not go behind the goal and take away advantage 3v2 ball needs to get to the center, attackers keep formation in a triangle, wings are lower than center ball, but maintain a shooting angle, no need to cut up to ball 4v3 - Attackers keep formation in a box, be ready to slide behind the defender who has to go to ball, keep box spread, no need to make cuts through, find the 2v1 Emphasis Defense: Slow down the ball, take up a lot of space, anticipate the next pass, communicate, slide hard 1v1 ground ball drill in 12m Set-up: Divide group into 2 teams, coach sets up above the 12m with balls. The two teams are lined up at the top with the coach. One player from each team start in the 12m. Drill starts with a ground ball rolled into the 12m area at the 2 players. 2 players compete for ball, 1 becomes the attacker, other is defender, 1v1 to cage. *If a goal is not scored right away, coach may randomly call in players from both teams (1 at a time) to join in. The play has potential to become a 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, or 4v4.

Emphasis: Body positioning for ground ball, player with ball, turn and go to cage. If other pairs get added, attack is working on being creative, finding the advantage. Defense is playing solid 12m D 3v4 + 1 defender, emphasize double teams Set-up: 3 marked pairs inside 30, 1 marked pair is making cut to ball, once the pass goes into the attacker, the passer becomes an extra defender, goes to try to double team the initial ball carrier. *Eventually add a trail attack. Drill becomes a 4v4. Emphasis: Attack, making a good cut to ball, turning and having an option down Field before the double team con lock on. Defense, get the double and come up with the ball, no double, find the trail attacker Shooting 3v2 in 12m Set-up: 3 attackers in 12m vs 2 defenders. Ball can start with any attacker. Defense working on covering space. Short, quick stick and shooting drill. Defense and goalie adjusting to quick ball movement. Emphasis: Attack, move ball quickly, try to have one pass and a good shot, do not telegraph, find the 2v1, see the goalie, finish. Defense, adjust quickly, big and loud. NOTES

Demystifying the Rules of Women s Lacrosse for Players, Parents, Coaches and Spectators Linda Thayer OUTLINE: I. Basic Philosophy of Rules and Umpiring II. Fouls: Major and Minor III. Penalties IV. Goal Circle Fouls and Penalties V. Restraining Line VI. What s New in 2003: New Rules & New Interpretations VII. The 10 Most Common Questions NOTES:

Team Defense = Defensive System Jill Malko, Cal The role of a system is to create a unified set of principles that will help your team to do one important thing:!! 1. Define your philosophy (and rules) and stick to them -Based on team strengths and weaknesses including your own - Your philosophy force wide or weak, fight through picks or switch, pressure ball hard or sag. 2. Get Organized - Write it out - Include players for developing it i.e. terminology 3. How will you teach the system everyone learns differently - break it down - write it, draw it, show it, do it, watch it 4. How will you communicate it - terminology - From sidelines 5. Steal it and envelop it - Clinics - Opponents - Basketball Defensive Principals: Vision Must see ball at all times Move when the Ball Moves Communication not just talk but communicate Be Aggressive Force to the Outside (or away from goal) Settled Defense 7 v 7 Progression: Individual skills: D stance, off-ball defense, 1 v 1 defense, checking, blocking, Team skills: double teams, help, slide, team positioning Drills:

Pentagon Drill Set D with out sticks two hands on attacker is a double team Set D with sticks upside down Goalie dictates double bring her and turn her (5 v 5) D starts in huddle- break out and find ball on whistle - do this a player down Maryland Drill R-Line 7 v 6 or 7 v 7 Settled Defenses Examples: Princeton - Hard pressure on ball, adjacent help Harvard - hard pressure on ball and on adjacent Yale double ball and pressure adjacent, leave furthest away open Dartmouth back off ball, adjacent look to double Penn - Zone Defensive Terminology

Ball Ball s Down Help Help Right/Left No Help Go - the best word Cutter I Got 2 Ball s Up Bring Her Turn Her Double Pick Left/Right Switch Stay Defending Picks Step Up, Over and Fight through the Pick 1. How: Step Up, have contact and fight through to deny the ball. 2. Why: If the defender is quicker than the cutter or if she isn t very effective. 3. Consequence: a) If done correctly, it will work. Also, pressure coming off the pick may intimidate and rattle the cutter. b) If the attacker is quicker, can receive well under pressure and her teammates can thread the needle she may receive the ball and score Slide Underneath the Pick 1. How: Upon hearing the defender whose player is setting the pick communicate the pick, her teammate who is being picked off must drop step and step under to avoid the pick, then step up and deny the ball. Remember, sticks must be up and in the passing lane to deny the ball. 2. Why: If you have been picked off before and want to avoid the pick. 3. Consequences: a) If the defender can anticipate well and can get under the pick quick enough, they may be able to bat the ball down or intercept the pass. b) If the defender is slow to get around the pick, and again, is playing a quicker player whose teammate can thread the needle, she may get beat. Switching on the Pick 1. How: As the pick is being set, one of the defenders yells SWITCH and the defender whose girl set the pick takes the cutter and the defender who was being picked steps down to take the attacker who set the pick. Remember, sticks must be up and in the passing lane to deny the ball.

2. Why: If the pick is very good and the defender doesn t think she can get through the pick, or if they were caught off guard. 3. Consequences: a) It allows for the cutter to be denied the ball quicker and if the defender switches quick enough, they may have a chance to block the pass or intercept. b) If the communication isn t clear, or one of the defenders doesn t listen, the cutter could come off the pick and be open to receive the ball. 4. Trouble Spot for Switches After the switch or split occurs, the defender who is being picked off is often in a position where she is higher than the picker. This puts the picker in excellent position to seal and roll. To avoid this, the defender must anticipate this and reposition herself to deny the picker this roll. Split Also called Walling 1. How: Defender being picked must step down. Defense communicates I got first right or First left, etc. 2. Why: Effective against skilled, fast teams and stacks. 3. Consequences: Protects middle and goal side well. Defense can be vulnerable to pop outs, 3 second calls and it is difficult to keep your mark. NOTES:

Running a Practice, Obtaining a Winning Season and Overall Team Spirit By: Debra Holland, Head Women s Lacrosse, Saint Mary s College of CA I. Develop a Philosophy A. Who are the players? 1. Evaluate talent 2. Evaluate the psychology of individuals 3. Set goals (both short and long) 4. Determine where your players need to be B. Guidelines 1. Starts at practice, locker room, on the field, meals, etc. 2. Be as efficient and consistent as possible 3. Cover all of the bases/boundaries 4. Prioritize the use of time 5. Try to stay with the plan 6. Every activity should always be goal seeking II. Building a Practice Plan A. Evaluate Your Assets (Know what you have to work with first) 1. Number of Coaches 2. Facilities 3. Equipment 4. Strengths and Weaknesses (of Coaching Staff, Administration Support, Players, ect.) B. Comprehensive List of Skill 1. Establish a code of conduct 2. Develop a foundation with basic fundamentals 3. Cover all game situations (small and large) 4. Conditioning C. Progressional Teaching (Please Note: Prioritize each activity and weigh it relative to practice time available. WRITE YOUR PRACTICES DOWN!!!) 1. Warm up and Stretch Session 2. Mental Picture and Goal Setting Session 3. Individual Fundamental Skill Session 4. Small Group Skill and Coordination Session 5. Team Cooperation Session (Meat and Potatoes of Your Goal) 6. Overall Strength and Conditioning **BREAK DOWN EXAMPLE** III. Preparing and Planning for a Winning Season A. Learning and Teaching (Preparation Start) 1. Two Steps in learning from mistakes (1) Ask yourself, what will I do differently next time and (2) See yourself doing it right the next time 2. Understanding Directions (Three Forms) (1) Direct, (2) Questions and (3) Criticism 3. Applying learning to practice 4. Further learning by making necessary adjustments

5. Game application B. Visualization 1. Practice and play in the minds eye 2. Rehearsal 3. Mental practice 4. Imagination = Ultimate Energy C. Concentration and Focus 1. Yourself 2. Your staff 3. Your team D. Mental Discipline 1. Meeting obstacles 2. Recognizing obstacles 3. Fighting and overcoming slumps E. Doing Things the Winning Way 1. Reasoning + Experience = Knowledge 2. Basic instincts F. Relaxation 1. Take care of yourself 2. Take care of your team IV. Development of a Team Spirit Get to the Core of It All A. Starts with Individual Self and the Attitude of How to Become a Winner 1. Positive Self-Awareness: This is self-honesty. Winners are honest about their potential and honest about the time and effort necessary for top achievement. Winners that are self-aware are open-minded making them think and make decisions for themselves. 2. Positive Self-Esteem: Most important and basic qualities of a winning human being. It is the feeling of one s own worth. Positive self-talk is the key to anyone s confidence. This can become the root of most individuals problems. 3. Positive Self-Control: Is synonymous with self-determination. Winners take full responsibility for determining their actions in their own lives. Implies freedom for individuals to choose among many alternatives and to shape their own destinies. 4. Positive Self-Image: This is the key to understanding human behavior. If you change the self-image, you can change the personality and the behavior. 5. Positive Self-Expectancy: Winners expect to win for three key reasons (1) Desire, (2) Self-Control and (3) Preparation. V. Summary and Conclusion NOTES: A. Be an organized manager B. Capture your consumer s attention C. Plan ahead in full detail D. Know why before you do it E. Dare to be different F. HAVE FUN!!!

Individual Defense Michelle Reiss Key points On Ball Force weak Stay goal side Stick higher than Attacker Hands positioned for check Talk Key points Off Ball Force weak Stay goal side Triangle Positioning- see player and ball Stick up in passing lane Lead attacker through cuts, don t follow Talk ON BALL (Critical Scoring Area) Defenders must learn to control the options of the attacker. Take away her favorite things to do like shooting and passing strong side and running directly toward goal. She must also be actively talking and ready to hold her ground with physical contact. Force week: Know attackers strong side and maintain position on that side angling her to weak side. Stay Goal Side (between attacker and goal): If you don t do this, the rest is useless. To goal is the one place you absolutely do not want her to go. Stick higher than Attacker s: When a ball is passed from the stick it exits on a higher plane than the top of the stick. To increase percentage of blocked passes, defender should shadow the attacker by holding her stick a head higher. Hands positioned for check: Top hand almost halfway down, but not too far down as to make the check uncontrollable. This grip also keeps hands in position to easily pick up the ball once it is on the ground. OFF BALL (CSA) Defenders should maintain triangle position. See player and ball and call out ball location. A good individual vocabulary helps the defense think as a single entity and is contagious. Lead attacker through cuts staying goal side and between player and ball. Keep stick up. Force week: Again stay stick side. Do not allow the attacker to gain a step to her strong side while cutting. Force her to ask weak or switch hands to make her turn over the ball. Stay Goal Side (between attacker and goal): Same as on ball defense. Triangle Positioning- see player and ball:

The defender must be able to see the ball so she can anticipate the angles her player will want to cut and to be able to help her teammates when she needs to slide. She must be able to see her player at the same time in order to force nondominant and control the attacker s cuts. To set this up, if you are forcing weak and positioned goal side you re almost there. Defender should be able to see both player and ball with her peripheral vision. Wherever attacker moves, defender moves with her maintaining the triangle position. Stick up and in Passing Lane: Hold stick with one hand (if strong enough) between attacker and ball. Depending on where attacker is, defender will have to switch hands to keep the stick in the passing lane and still have her body open enough to see player and ball in her peripheral vision. Lead through cuts, don t follow: Dictate where the attacker can go by steering her away from goal cuts. Keep stick in passing lane. CREASE DEFENSE: Square up to ball carrier instead of staying to the stick side like Triangle defense. Keep stick high in passing lane and anticipate attacker rolling crease. Quick feet are key. If feet aren t there first, defender will foul. Angle toes toward crease so defender can move quicker heel-toe-heel-toe instead of trying to side step. Hold your ground. No player may push another, but a defender is entitled to her space and to hold her ground if anyone tries to run into it. Anticipating where the attacker wants to go means the defender has a chance to get their first. As attacker charges around crease toward front of goal, defender must prepare to hold her ground. Hunker down, stick held with both hands out in front of body as if hugging a barrel. A more vertical stick will allow more opportunity to check successfully and decreases the likelihood of fouling. Anticipate attacker s path and get there first. Prepare for attacker running into arm space and apply pressure back. Do not extend arms and push attacker, but don t allow them to push you back into the 8m. arc either. After contact, as attacker tries to roll up and down the 8m. sideline, defender must continue to lead with their feet and maintain pressure with arms on attacker. MID-FIELD DEFENSE Most of the same points apply here as for defense in the critical scoring area, force weak, stay goal side, stick up. However given the extra room to maneuver in the midfield there are some adjustments to take away the attack s advantage. On ball, stay hip to hip so as not to get cut off in front or behind. Force to outside lanes of field keeping in mind it is more important to stay between the attacker and the middle lane as opposed to staying on the opponent s stick side. Off ball, stay goal side but close enough to deny the passing lane with stick. Anticipate areas attacker will want to cut to maintain this position. CHECKING Checking comes second to proper body positioning. Not only is it the second priority, but body positioning must be established first to check safely and effectively. Hands positioned for check: (to reiterate)

Top hand almost halfway down, but not too far down as to make the check uncontrollable. Also keeps hands in position to easily pick up ball once it is on the ground. Cadence: If you miss the first check don t keep trying at the same pace or you ll just keep missing. Regroup and wait for cradle to move toward you. Whether the ball carrier uses a traditional full gate cradle or cradles less and keeps stick in throwing position, the defender should maintain body position, shadowing with stick high and the opportunity to check will present itself. Practice checking both while the attacker is paused in one place and when they are on the move. TALKING Each individual must be able to communicate to the rest of her team where the ball is, who is defending it and where she is in relation to it. A team that can talk both on and off the ball can start to think and thereby move as a single unit. Talking intimidates the attack and constantly reminds them that the defense they face is aware of everything they re doing. It also helps the defenders remember what they need to do and where they need to be. DRILLS/NOTES On Ball Off Ball Crease Midfield
