Kathy McConnell-Miller (Virginia `89) is in her third season as the head coach of the Golden Hurricane women's basketball program. In two seasons, McConnell-Miller has an overall mark of and a Western Athletic Conference mark of McConnell-Miller enters her third season with the school's first-ever nationally ranked recruiting class and the most experienced group of returners in her three seasons. The freshmen class ranked as the 41st-best recruiting class in the nation according to the January edition of the All-Star Girls Report presented by The Women's Basketball Journal, and the group was the top-ranked class among Western Athletic Conference schools. When McConnell-Miller took over the reigns of the Tulsa women's basketball program two years ago, she inherited a team that had combined to win just 21 games over the previous three seasons and had never finished higher than fifthplace in the Western Athletic Conference. In her first season as Tulsa's head coach McConnell-Miller jolted the TU women's basketball program with vigor, enthusiasm and enough motivation to win 14 games, the second most in school history. Under her leadership, Tulsa finished fourth in the WAC with a 9-5 record, which was TU's best finish in its four years as a conference member, recorded a 9-4 home mark and capped off the season by capturing its first win at the WAC Tournament. TU's turnaround did not go unnoticed as she was named the WAC Women's Basketball Coach of the Year. On April 12, 1999, McConnell-Miller became the eighth head coach in the 14-year history of the Tulsa women's basketball program, but just the second since the women's program was reinstated six years ago. McConnell-Miller, 34, came to Tulsa after spending four years on the coaching staff at the University of Illinois ( ). McConnell-Miller was the Associate Head Coach during the campaign, while serving as an assistant coach for the Illini the previous three seasons.

McCONNELL-MILLER REACHES TU COACHING MARK... With TU s win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Tulsa head coach Kathy McConnell-Miller became TU s all-time winningest coach with 25 victories. She surpassed Joyce Plagens ( ) for first place on the school's career coaching list. Although the season marks the 17 th season of women s basketball at The University of Tulsa, the program is very young. After being dropped at the conclusion of the season, TU basketball was reinstated 10 years later and the Hurricane played its first season in Tulsa was coached by six coaches during the first 11 seasons. McConnell-Miller is the eighth coach at TU and is just one of three coaches to spend three seasons at the school. The other two coaches to reach three years were Bill Biggs ( ) and Marla Odom ( ). MASTER OF HER DOMAIN: SHRIVER DOMINATES INSIDE THE PAINT; SWATS HER WAY INTO TU RECORD BOOK... How big of an impact has junior Alyssa Shriver made on the TU women's basketball program this season? Against Oral Roberts, Shriver tallied a career-highs of 25 points, 10 field goals and 5-of-6 shooting from the foul line. In eight games, Shriver has 26 blocked shots, and with the single game record in her possession, Shriver will set her sights on the single season record of 31 set by Denise Wagner ( ) during the season. Wagner is also the career holder with 45 set in 81 games. Shriver, a 6-4 center, transferred to TU from Iowa State prior to the season.

In 1922, The University of Tulsa football team, who in the past had a variety of nicknames-- such as the Kendallites, Presbyterians, Tigers, Orange and Black and Tulsans - began working out in the fall with a new nickname - the Yellow Jackets. The team opened the season and it was apparent that Tulsa was going to have a great year, and trying to seize some publicity for his team, Tulsa Head Coach Howard Archer wanted to find a new nickname quickly. After a remark was made in practice one day about "roaring through opponents," and because of their new jersey colors (black and yellow), he thought of "Golden Tornadoes." But a check showed that Georgia Tech already had chosen that tag in From the tornado, he evolved meteorologically to the hurricane. A few days before the team left for a game against Texas A&M, Archer asked the squad to vote on the name, and "Golden Hurricane" was born.
