6 a Washington Men s Basketball Husky Notes Pac-12 Steals Leader Sophomore Matisse Thybulle finished the regular season as the Pac-12 Conference leader in steals finishing with 2.0 over 30 games... he is the first Husky since Jason Hamilton in to finish atop the league in steals... additionally, he is one of three Pac-12 players that can boast more steals than turnovers, as Thybulle has a teambest 63 steals and 58 TOs... he joins De Anthony Melton of USC who has 60 steals over 59 TOs and Jonah Matthews (USC) who is at 30 steals and 17 turnovers. Player Improvements After losing the three top scorers from a year ago, a group of Huskies have stepped up and increased their scoring average from a year ago. Take a look: Player Increase Crisp (+6.3) Dickerson (+4.9) Thybulle (+4.1) Green (+3.0) Dickerson s Double Doubles Fultz recorded his fifth career 30-point game vs. Utah Points x5 Fultz recorded his fifth career 30-point game vs. Utah... those five tie for the fifth most by a UW player in program history and he is the first freshman at UW to do so... he has also recorded 20 or more points in 18 of his 25 games played. 37 Points is A Lot of Points With his career-high 37 points against Colorado, Markelle Fultz became the third player at UW since 1990 to post at least 37 points in a game joining Andrew Andrews (47 points, March 2, 2016) and Dion Brown (37 points, Nov. 24, 1990). There have been just 13 other games in 115 years of Husky Hoops that have seen a player score 37 or more... Additionally, his career-high 37 points came without a 3-point FG, making him one of two guards in the NCAA this season to score 37 or more points without knocking one in from long distance, joining Nick Dixon (UTRGV, 41 pts, 15-of-26, Jan. 26). Taking Care of the Ball The Huskies recorded 10 or less turnovers for five-straight games (OSU, Cal, Stanford, Colorado, Utah), most recently tying their season low of seven against Utah. UW also recorded single-digit turnovers in five-straight for the first time since the first seven games of the season. Good From 3! Washington s 83.3 percent shooting from 3-point range at TCU (10-of-12) set the UW single-game record, surpassing the previous mark of 76.9 percent (10-of-13) set on Jan. 21, 1996 and is currently tied for the best singlegame showing in the NCAA this season. Scoring Depth Despite losing their top three scorers from last year, the Huskies have had no problem filling the stat sheet as four Dawgs are averaging at least 10 points over 30 outings. Freshman Markelle Fultz leads the group at 23.2 and is joined by sophomores David Crisp (13.5 ppg), Noah Dickerson (12.4 ppg) and Matisse Thybulle at 10.3 ppg. Additionally, five players have recorded at least one 20-point game this season. G Double Doubles Freshman Carlos Johnson and sophomore Matisse Thybulle each posted a double-double against Arizona State making it the first time since Nov. 25, 2016 that two Husky guards have had a double-double in the same game (Dejounte Murray, Andrew Andrews). Hot from the Field -The Huskies have shot less than 45 percent from the field in 16 games this season and are shooting 44.6 percent in 30 outings. Take a look at some of the other hot shooting stats from the Dawgs this season: -UW has shot over 50 percent from the field in seven out of its 29 games and its three-straight 50%+ shooting efforts to start the year marked the first time since that UW has shot that well in threestraight games. (Oregon State, 2/22/14, 57.4%; WSU, 2/28/14, 51.0%; UCLA, 3/6/14, 55.4%). -UW s blistering 58.9 percent (33-of-56) from the field against Yale was its highest single-game FG percentage since shooting 61.2 percent (41-of-67) against Long Beach State on Nov. 30, Young Roster UW s roster has no scholarship player that was on scholarship two years ago and is the sixth youngest roster in the NCAA... there are only two players that have been here longer than one season (Dan Kingma, Greg Bowman)..SO Matisse Thybulle is the only returning player to start in all 34 games a year ago... SO David Crisp and SR captain Malik Dime are the other two that saw action in every game last season. Length, Length, Length Washington s roster is quite lengthy and not because of quantity. Out of the 14 on the roster, six of the key players have wingspans that are at least four inches longer than their actual height. Senior forward Malik Dime s wingspan is eight inches bigger than his 6-9 frame at 7-5 while sophomore Matisse Thybulle brings a 7-0 wingspan on his 6-5 body. Take a look: Player Height Wingspan Malik Dime (+8) Matisse Thybulle (+7) Markelle Fultz (+6) Dominic Green (+5) Matthew Atewe (+5) Bitumba Baruti (+4.5) Block Party The Huskies tied the single-game school record for blocks against Yale as they tallied 15, tying the mark set a year ago against Colorado in Seattle (Jan. 20, 2016)... in the most recent NCAA Stats (through games as of March 5) Washington s 5.5 blocks per game currently rank ninth in the NCAA. Additionally, UW, which led the NCAA in blocks last year, is the only team in the country with three games of 13+blocks, also marking the first time under Romar for a team to post at least 13 blocks in 3 or more games. Dickerson Upping his Reb #s Sophomore Noah Dickerson has been a beast on the boards this season, recording eight 10+ rebounding efforts. He set a career high with 17 at Seattle University, which is the most by a Husky since the season when Jon Brockman had 17 against Washington State on Jan. 5, Dickerson has upped his season average to 8.3 per game from 5.2 a year ago. Deflections for Days Defensively, Washington is averaging 38.3 deflections per game while also posting 6.2 steals per game... additionally, UW owns the Pac-12 steals leader in Matisse Thybulle (2.0) while Markelle Fultz finished the regular season fourth with 1.6 per game. Fultz Facts Fultz s 23.2 ppg average is not only leading the Pac- 12 but is on pace to be the highest scoring average by a league player in 20 years (Ed Gray, Cal, )... additionally, his conference scoring average of 24.1 leads the league by five points - the Pac-12 single-season conference scoring record is 27.8 (Reggie Miller, UCLA, 1986)... he is also the leading freshman scorer in the NCAA at 23.2 ppg, which ranks fifth overall In 25 outings, freshman Markelle Fultz has recorded scoring efforts, five of which were 30+ scoring games... his 23.2 ppg average is the best by a freshman in the NCAA this season and ranks sixth nationally Fultz posted his third 10+assist effort against Washington State to become the third player under Romar to record 10 or more assists in three or more games during a season joining all-time assists leader Will Conroy ( , 5 games) and NBA All-Star Isaiah Thomas ( , 3 games)... Fultz is the only freshman out of the four to do so. Fultz is one of just 10 players under Romar to post a 20+ point & 10+ rebound game as he scored 21 and added 14 rebs at TCU, joining Brandon Roy, Jon Brockman, Spencer Hawes, Quincy Pondexter, Terrence Ross, Matthew Bryan-Amaning, Andrew Andrews, Marquese Chriss and current teammate Noah Dickerson. He joins Chriss as the only freshmen to do so. Fultz is the first Husky since Pondexter in to post 20 pt/10 reb games in back-to-back contests... QP recorded three-straight from Jan. 26, 2010-Feb. 4, Fultz has led the team in points and assists in 16 games this season and has led in points, rebounds and assists in eight of UW s 27 games Fultz currently has 148 assists on the season which are second on UW s freshmen list... the freshman record is 151 set by Dejounte Murray in Back-to-Back 30 Point Games Freshman Markelle Fultz became just the third Husky under head coach Lorenzo Romar to record back-toback 30 point games as he notched 30 in his freshman debut and 35 in the following game. He is also the first player to do so twice in a season and the first to record three-straight after scoring 34 at Stanford, 37 against Colorado and 30 against Utah. He joins the company of Brandon Roy (35 vs. ASU and UA in Dec. 2005) and Andrew Andrews (33 vs. ASU and 30 vs. Colorado in Jan. 2016). Fultz s Accountability In his 25 games, freshman Markelle Fultz has had a huge hand in UW s scoring this season as he has been accountable for 48.2 percent of UW s 1973 points between his 23.2 ppg and 5.9 apg. Take a look: vs. Yale 45 of 90 points (50.0%) vs. CS-Fullerton 49 of 104 points (47.1%) vs. NAU 36 of 92 points (39.1%) vs. LBSU 36 of 94 points (38.2%) vs. WKU 34 of 86 points (39.5%) vs. TCU 36 of 80 points (45.0%) at TCU 37 of 71 points (52.1%) at #8 Gonzaga 27 of 71 points (38.0%) vs. Nevada 40 of 85 points (47.1%) vs. W. 7 a Washington Men s Basketball Husky Notes Flirting w/a Triple Double In the 115 years of Washington men s basketball history, there has yet to be a player to record a triple double. Freshman Markelle Fultz has been very close a few times this year through his 25 games, take a look: vs. Yale 30 pts, 7 rebs, 6 assists vs. CS-Fullerton 16 pts, 8 assists, 7 rebs vs. W. Kentucky 10 assists, 9 pts, 8 rebs at TCU 21 points, 14 rebs, 6 assists vs. Nevada 25 points, 8 assists, 5 rebs vs. W. Michigan 27 points, 10 assists, 8 rebs vs. WSU 26 points, 11 assists, 9 rebs at ASU 28 points, 9 assists, 8 rebs Scoring Up as a Whole Not only did Washington score over 90 points in fourstraight games for the first time since the season when they knocked in 99 vs. American (Nov. 19, 2005), 90 vs. Idaho (Nov. 22, 2005), 112 vs. Loyola Marymount (Nov. 25, 2005) and 99 vs. Gonzaga (Dec. 4, 2005) but Washington is sixth in the Pac-12 in scoring, averaging 76.5 ppg. The Huskies also scored 86 points or more in fivestraight games for the first time in the Lorenzo Romar era. Fultz s Freshman Debut Freshman standout Markelle Fultz made his presence known during his Husky debut as he led the team in points (30), rebounds (7) and assists (6). He s the first Husky since Andrew Andrews had 30, six and five at Oregon State (Feb. 24, 2016) to lead the team in those three categories. His 30 points also tie for the most this early in the season by a Dawg - Isaiah Thomas had 30 as a sophomore on Nov. 13, Fultz Picks Up National Attn Freshman Markelle Fultz s meteoric rise to the top of the 2016 class has been well chronicled and the accolades didn t stop once he joined the Husky squad this summer. He has been named a preseason All-American and preseason Freshman of the Year by many outlets heading into the season. Take a look: USA Today Preseason Freshman of the Year CBS Sports Preseason Freshman of the Year CBS Sports Preseason First Team All-American Sports Illustrated Preseason First Team All-American Athlon Preseason First Team All-American USA Today Preseason Second Team All-American Australia-New Zealand Recap The Huskies were able to take their every-four-years foreign tour this summer and spent 12 days between Melbourne, Christchurch and Sydney. The Dawgs went 3-2 in their five games against professional teams down under and were led by freshman Markelle Fultz who averaged 21.2 points and 6.8 rebounds in those outings. He also led the team with 23 assists and added six blocks. Sophomore David Crisp averaged 13.2 points while sophomore Noah Dickerson averaged a double-double with 11.4 rebounds and 10.6 points while playing an average of 20 minutes per outing. Additionally sophomore Dominic Green added 11.2 points per game. Coaching Updates During the offseason, Raphael Chillious, who was integral in bringing standout Markelle Fultz to Washington, was elevated to Associate Head Coach for the Dawgs. Additionally, head coach Lorenzo Romar hired Michael Porter from Missouri as an assistant coach and former assistant Brad Jackson is now the special assistant to the head coach. Additionally, former Husky Will Conroy is now in his second year with the Dawgs as an assistant coach. Huskies in the NBA UW s presence in the NBA remains strong as the Dawgs boast eight former players holding spots on rosters this season - Marquese Chriss (Phoenix Suns), Spencer Hawes (Milwaukee Bucks), Justin Holiday (New York Knicks), Dejounte Murray (San Antonio Spurs), Quincy Pondexter (New Orleans Pelicans), Terrence Ross (Orlando Magic), Isaiah Thomas (Boston Celtics) and C.J. Wilcox (Orlando Magic). UW also had two players drafted in the first round of the 2016 NBA Draft marking the second time two Huskies have gone in that round under head coach Lorenzo Romar Husky Basketball HOW MANY TIMES A HUSKY HAS Points (career high) Career Streak Markelle Fultz (37) David Crisp (31) Noah Dickerson (27) Matisse Thybulle (20) Dominic Green (20) Points (career high) Career Streak Markelle Fultz (37) David Crisp (31) Noah Dickerson (27) Matisse Thybulle (20) Dominic Green (20) Carlos Johnson (19) Malik Dime (17) Sam Timmins (11) (career high) Career Streak Noah Dickerson (17) Malik Dime (14) Sam Timmins (12-2x) Markelle Fultz (14) Carlos Johnson (12) Matisse Thybulle (11) Double-Double Career Streak Noah Dickerson Markelle Fultz Malik Dime David Crisp Matisse Thybulle Carlos Johnson Assists (career high) Career Streak Markelle Fultz (11) David Crisp (10) Matisse Thybulle (5) Steals (career high) Career Streak Matisse Thybulle (6-2x) Markelle Fultz (5) Noah Dickerson (3-2x) David Crisp (3) Blocks (career high) Career Streak Malik Dime (7) Matisse Thybulle (6) Dominic Green (3) Matthew Atewe (4) Noah Dickerson (3) Markelle Fultz (3) Sam Timmins (3-2x) Class of 2017 The Huskies signed their highest ranked class under head coach Lorenzo Romar on Nov. 9 with five agreeing to join UW for the season.
