Intramural 5v5 Basketball 1. All participants must bring their current UCCS ID to each game. Participants without proper identification will not be allowed to play. No other forms of identification (driver s license, class schedule, etc.) will be accepted. Must sign in to at least one regular season game in order to be eligible for the play offs. 2. Intramural regulations and policies concerning eligibility are in effect. 3. All injuries must be reported to the supervisor on duty. IM supervisors are trained in first aid and CPR. 4. Situations not specifically covered or implied by these rules shall be governed by current National Federation Basketball Rules and Interpretations. These rule books will be on hand for all IM competition and can be referenced at any time while questioning a call. Keep in mind that judgment calls may not be protested, but rule interpretations may be protested. Please see the Intramural Handbook for further information regarding formal protests. Certain intramural modifications follow: 1) Players A. Team captains are the only individuals permitted to talk to officials regarding questions on calls or league play. If a player does have a question during a game, he or she should direct that question through their team captain. Referee s reserve the right to not answer questions until there is a stoppage in play. B. Teams must begin the game with at least four (4) players. Failure of a team to have four players present at game time shall result in a forfeit. C. Players may substitute on dead balls only, and must first check in with the score table. 2) Equipment Jersey s A. All Co-Rec, Men's, and Women's teams will be required to wear numbered jerseys during Intramural play. B. Teams may bring their own jerseys/t-shirts as long as they are the same color and are legally numbered on both sides. C. If both teams arrive with their own jerseys/t-shirts and they are the same color, the visiting team will be designated to checkout departmental jerseys (or rock-paper-scissors). Jewelry A. No jewelry is permitted on the floor at any time. This includes wrist bands, bracelets, necklaces, and earrings. Stud earrings are permitted, provided they are covered by tape or a band-aid. 3) Responsibilities and Definitions A. Captains are charged with controlling team mates during a game. Captains are encouraged to approach officials and supervisors with a calm attitude and an open mind.
4) Scoring and Timing A. Two (2) twenty-minute running halves will constitute a game. The clock shall run during fouls and free throws. A maximum of two minutes will be allowed for half time. Teams shall be allowed two (2) time-outs per half not exceeding one-minute in length. B. The clock will stop in the last two minutes of the second half for all dead ball situations. During the regular season a tie will remain as such. A three-minute overtime period will be played in the case of a tie (during the playoffs). If the overtime period ends in a tie score, then another three minute extra period is played, until a winner is decided. Each team shall be allowed one time-out (non-cumulative from regulation play) in the overtime period. C. A three point shot will be used. A successful try from the field beyond the three-point line counts three points. For a successful three-point play, the player must have one or both feet on the floor and beyond the three-point line when the shot is attempted. After the release of the ball, the shooter may land on the line or in any part of the two- point area. 5) Fouls and Penalties (Free Throws) A. Fouls committed on the floor: Ball is taken out-of-bounds until the 7th team foul. B. Shooting Fouls: Points are awarded automatically for any shooting foul (two or three points) before the seventh team foul is committed. In the case the basket is made the and-one principal will apply and 3 or 4 points will be awarded depending on where the shot originated. C. Prior to the seventh team foul, a non-shooting foul; the team fouled will be awarded an inbounds pass. D. If a player is intentionally or flagrantly fouled or a technical foul is called he/she will be awarded two points and the ball out of bounds. E. On the 7 th team foul, BONUS, if a player is fouled on a non-shot, that player will receive one-and one shooting opportunity. If a player is fouled on a shot, that player will receive an automatic 2 or 3 points depending on where the shot originated. a. During the last two (2) minutes of the second half, the clock shall stop during this process (provided the teams are within 15 points of one another) and free throws will be awarded regardless of shooting or non-shooting fouls. F. On the 10 th team foul, DOUBLE BONUS, if a player is fouled on a non-shot, that player will receive 2 free throws. If a player is fouled on a shot, that player will receive an automatic 2 or 3 points depending on where the shot originated. a. During the last two (2) minutes of the second half, the clock shall stop during this process (provided the teams are within 15 points of one another) and free throws will be awarded regardless of shooting or non-shooting fouls (high school basketball rules apply). If a player is fouled on a non-shot, or if shooting, that player will receive a double-bonus shooting opportunity, or the equivalent to their shot attempt in free throws. G. During the final two minutes of the game: the clock will stop for every foul. If a team is up by more than 15 points, the clock will not stop. H. Players are allowed five fouls. On the fifth personal foul, the player is disqualified from the game. Technical s fouls will count toward a player s fouls.
I. Any player receiving two technical fouls in one game will be ejected from that competition and will not be allowed to participate in any intramural activity until he or she has met with the Intramural Director. 6) Forfeitures A. Forfeit time is five minutes after the scheduled game. B. Officials can forfeit a game due to repeated flagrant misconduct by a player or team. C. Any team receiving three technical fouls in one game will automatically default the game, regardless of the score. 7) Co-Rec Differences A. Teams are composed of 3 women and 2 men on the court. Teams may also play with a minimum of 4 players; 2 men and 2 women. Teams are NOT permitted to play with 3 men and 2 women on the court. If only 2 women are present at game time teams must play with 4 players. B. Women s baskets are scored as: 2 point shots = 3 points, and 3 point shots = 4 points. 8) SPORTSMANSHIP a. As part of the philosophy of the Intramural Sports Program at UCCS, sportsmanship is vital to the success of each and every program we offer to the university community. Intramural Program Assistants, Supervisors, and Sports Officials have been granted the authority to make decisions to warn, penalize, or eject participants or teams for poor displays of sportsmanship. The Coordinator of Intramural Sports will decide on any further disciplinary issues. All affected participants must report to the Coordinator before their next scheduled game before they can be reinstated to play. 9) Sportsmanship Rating System a. General Rating System Criteria b. All teams sportsmanship will be scored after each game on a 4.0 scale (four being outstanding, to zero, which is unacceptable behavior). i. Each team must maintain a 2.5 average Sportsmanship Rating in order to be eligible for playoff competition. ii. Any team that falls below a 1.0 average Sportsmanship Rating at any time will meet with the Coordinator of Intramural Sports. iii. Any team that falls below a 2.5 average Sportsmanship Rating during the playoffs will be eliminated from the competition. c. Method of Rating i. The Sports Officials working that game and/or any Intramural Staff (Program Assistant, Supervisors or Administrative Staff) will rate the sportsmanship of each team after every game. ii. The Sports Officials and Intramural Sports Staff will rate teams and organizations on a 4.0 scale. iii. Teams will be rated on their captains, players, coaches, and fans sportsmanship toward the other team, opposing fans, officials, and intramural staff. iv. Team Captains will rate the quality of the Officiating after each game on a 4.0 scale. Ask the Intramural supervisor about this process after your game.
d. Sportsmanship Rating is based off of the following criteria: i. 4.0 (Excellent) Exemplary conduct, excellent sportsmanship towards opposing teams, officials, and staff members. Coaches/players exceed expectations during their contest. Team was a joy to watch and work for. 1. Defaults ii. 3.0 (Average) Conduct was average. Official s made verbal warnings. Team was late to contest, not in proper uniform. Non captain s addressing officials. Minor trash talking offenses. Excessive physical contact/penalties. iii. 2.0 (Below Average) One unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and/or general poor sportsmanship and conduct of a team and/or others associated. (Examples: Technical foul in basketball, taunting penalty in flag football, warning in softball, yellow card in soccer). Check with officials after the game to account for all unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. iv. 1.0 (Poor) Two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, an ejected participant, and/or extremely poor conduct of team/individuals. 1. Forfeits v. 0.0 (Very Poor) At least one ejection and/or extremely poor sportsmanship and conduct of a team, individual or fans in regards to their contest. Four unsportsmanlike penalties will also result in a 0 and an automatic forfeit. 10) Rule Clarification Captains A. The team captain is the representative of his/her team and may address an official on matters of interpretation or to obtain essential information, if it is done in a courteous manner. Blocking/ charging A. Blocking is illegal personal contact which impedes the progress of an opponent with or without the ball. B. Charging is illegal personal contact caused by pushing or moving into an opponent s torso. I. A player who is moving with the ball is required to stop or change direction to avoid contact if a defensive player has obtained a legal guarding position in his/her path. II. If a guard has obtained legal guarding position, the player with the ball must get his/her head and shoulders past the torso of the defensive player. If contact occurs on III. the torso of the defensive player, the dribbler is responsible for the contact. The player with the ball may not push the torso of the guard to gain an advantage to pass, shoot or dribble. Foul A. A personal foul is a player foul which involves illegal contact with an opponent while the ball is live, which hinders an opponent from performing normal defensive and offensive movements. Guarding A. 1. A player who extends an arm, shoulder, hip or leg into the path of an opponent is not considered to have legal position if contact occurs. To obtain initial legal guarding position: I. The guard must have both feet touching the playing court II. The front of the guard s torso must be facing the opponent. After initial legal guarding is obtained:
III. The guard may move laterally or obliquely to maintain position, provided it is not toward the opponent when contact occurs. IV. The guard may raise hands or jump within his/her own vertical plane. Hands and arms, legal and illegal use A. 1. It is not legal to use hands and arms or hips and shoulders to force his/her way through a screen or to hold the screener and then to push him/her aside in order to maintain a guarding position relative to his/her opponent. B. 2. It is not legal to extend the arms fully or partially in a position other than vertical so that the freedom of movement of an opponent is hindered when contact with the arms occurs. The extension of the elbows when the hands are on the hips or when the hands are held near the chest or when the arms are held more or less horizontally are examples of illegal positions used. C. 3. It is not legal to use the hand and/or forearm to prevent an opponent from attacking the ball during a dribble or when throwing for goal. D. 4. It is not legal to swing arms and elbows excessively. Verticality A. From this position, the defender may rise or jump vertically and occupy the space within his/her vertical plane. B. The hands and arms of the defender may be raised within his/her vertical plane while on the floor or in the air. C. The defender should not be penalized for leaving the floor vertically or having his/her hands and arms extended within his/her vertical plane. Technicalities A. An offensive three second lane violation will be used during intramural play.
