CINCINNATI BENGALS One Paul Brown Stadium Cincinnati, Ohio (513) administrative offices (513) administrative fax (513) 621-TDTD (8383) ticket office WEEKLY NEWS RELEASE jan. 14, 2016 PRIDE, FRUSTRATION AND RESOLVE MINGLE AS BENGALS LOOK AHEAD TO FRESH START IN 2016 Seldom, surely, has an NFL team entered a new year with the mixture of pride, frustration and resolve that defines the Bengals. Cincinnati heads into 2016 with a record, for a.656 winning percentage, over the last five regular seasons. It s the fifth-best record among the 32 NFL teams over that span and has netted five playoff berths. But the playoff mark is 0-5. Head coach Marvin Lewis and others could talk of circumstances. The rather large circumstance of 2015 was that QB Andy Dalton, the AFC s passing leader (Bengals-record rating), was out with a thumb fracture as the team tried and failed to secure a first-round playoff bye. Dalton was also out as the Bengals lost to Pittsburgh in last week s playoff game. Though backup QB AJ McCarron showed much poise and promise with his play, the offense was running from Dec. 13 on with a serious deficit in experience. The steadily ascending Dalton went to the bench with 81 career starts (including postseason), and McCarron now has four. The Bengals also had a seriously depleted offense when they lost at Indianapolis in the 2014 season playoffs. But the team s very pluck against Pittsburgh rallying behind McCarron to a lead after trailing 15-0 served to set up a crushing disappointment for Bengals Nation. Mistakes by HB Jeremy Hill (lost fumble), LB Vontaze Burfict (personal foul) and CB Adam Jones (personal foul) combined to enable Pittsburgh for a 37-yard field goal and an win. The personal foul calls provided Pittsburgh a 30-yard boost in the final minute, turning the Steelers winning field-goal drive from a desperation bid into an all-too-achievable task. Without the (Hill) fumble, we re not even having these conversations (about the personal fouls), Lewis said. A lot went on at the end, and none of the (officiating) breaks went our way. But at that point, win the football game. Let s do it the way we re coached to do it and do it right, and everybody feels good. Nobody feels worse than when they re at the eye of the storm and things don t happen right. But you either do this, and have an opportunity to win, or you do that, and you lose. That s as point-blank as I can put it to them. The remorsefulness afterwards doesn t hold water. I have to find a better way, I know that, Lewis went on. I have to find a better way to get that across to them. And now the quest begins to return to the playoffs in the 2016 season and advance. It s not as if the raw material isn t there after a 12-4 regular season that matched the best 16-game finish in franchise history. This was the best team I ve played on, said 10th-year OT Andrew Whitworth. People can criticize this team for (not winning) playoff appearances. But they have to acknowledge the resolve that this team has shown to get back to the playoffs. It s tremendous, and there are all kinds of reasons to look ahead and not behind. The list of 2015 accomplishments included a No. 2 NFL rank in scoring defense, the highest in franchise history. People wrote us off for this year, said defensive coordinator Paul Guenther. They picked us as the AFC team to fall the farthest, and we won the division by two games. I think we have a good team here for years to come. We just have to put this behind us. We have a good team with a bunch of good guys that will respond. Among the team s five Pro Bowl selections, four are under contract for next season. That quartet encompasses DT Geno Atkins (first-team AP All-Pro), WR A.J. Green (five Pro Bowls in five seasons), TE Tyler Eifert (13 TDs in 2015) and Whitworth (first-team AP All-Pro). Also securely in the fold are Dalton, DE Carlos Dunlap (13.5 sacks), talented HBs Hill and Giovani Bernard, MLB Rey Maualuga END-OF-SEASON NOTES 1 and Burfict. Dalton and Dunlap were first alternates in Pro Bowl voting and were thought by many to have deserved better. Overall, 17 of the 22 depth-chart starters at season s end are due back. Five starters can enter free agency safeties Reggie Nelson (Pro Bowl) and George Iloka, CB Jones, WR Marvin Jones and OT Andre Smith. And the Bengals in recent years have been praised as one of the NFL s best organizations at managing the salary cap and roster. I don t think we ll have as much change with players as some people have speculated, said Lewis. We ll do a good job of getting guys back here and signed. I think our guys know they have a good home here. There s a lot of pieces in place. We ve put some young guys in place. We ve had young guys step up and play this season, and they ll do nothing but get better for next season. Elias Sports Bureau reports that prior to 2015, there had been 28 instances in the NFL of a team making the playoffs five straight seasons. Of those 28, 18 made it again for a sixth straight year, a success rate of 64.3 percent. His 112 total is good for a margin of 48 over Sam Wyche (64). Lewis record is in the regular season and including postseason. Lewis in 2015 extended his tenure to 13 seasons, also a Bengals record, and in April of 15, he signed a contract extension through 16. He has led the

(The head coach, continued) team to the postseason in six of the last seven years, including five straight. The Bengals are one of only four NFL teams to be in the playoffs every year since In total, Lewis has coached seven Bengals playoff teams, another franchise record. Paul Brown is second in the category, with three. Lewis has coached four division champions, including this season, two more than Paul Brown and Sam Wyche. The Bengals have logged four straight seasons of double-digit wins. Pre- Lewis, the record was two. This season has marked the second AFC North championship for the Bengals in the last three years. In 2013, Lewis led an 11-5 season, winning the North by three games over both Baltimore and Pittsburgh. In a 2009 title season in which the Bengals swept all six division games and won the North title, Lewis was the consensus choice as NFL Coach of the Year. Lewis also led Cincinnati to an AFC North title in Lewis ranks second in the NFL in longest current tenure with one team, trailing only Bill Belichick, who in 2015 was is in his 16th straight season with New England. In the category of most seasons as an active NFL head coach with one or more teams, Lewis in 2015 ranked sixth. Lewis was named the ninth head coach in Bengals history on Jan. 14, In 02, he directed the NFL s fifth-ranked defense with Washington, serving as assistant head coach in addition to his role as defensive coordinator. Prior to his year with the Redskins, he was a record-setting defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens. His six seasons with the Ravens ( ) included a Super Bowl victory following the 00 season. In the 00 season, Lewis Baltimore defense set the NFL record for fewest points allowed in a 16-game campaign (165), and the 00 Ravens are always included in discussions of the best singleseason NFL defenses of all time. Lewis entered the NFL as linebackers coach with Pittsburgh from , guiding the careers of Pro Bowl selections Kevin Greene, Chad Brown, Levon Kirkland and Greg Lloyd. Born Sept. 23, 1958, in McDonald, Pa., near Pittsburgh, Lewis played linebacker at Idaho State and earned All-Big Sky Conference honors in each of his three seasons ( 78-80). He began his coaching career as an assistant at Idaho State University in Bengals by two: The Bengals won their fourth AFC North Division championship under head coach Marvin Lewis in 2015, finishing two games ahead of second-place Pittsburgh. The season was the first since 2010 in the AFC North in which Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Baltimore all did not finish.500 or better. The final standings: TEAM W-L PCT. DIV. Cincinnati Pittsburgh Baltimore Cleveland Postseason is Andy s standard equipment: Bengals QB Andy Dalton has joined Baltimore s Joe Flacco as the NFL s only starting QBs in the Super Bowl era to lead a team to postseason in each of his first five campaigns. Flacco did it with Baltimore from , and Dalton has done it from 2011 through this season. Flacco s streak was snapped when the Ravens missed the playoffs in If Dalton leads the Bengals to the playoffs again in 2016, he ll have set a new benchmark in this category. Dalton claims AFC passing title: Bengals QB Andy Dalton ranked first in the AFC and second in the NFL in passing in Dalton, who missed the final three games and the Wild Card playoff due to a thumb fracture, posted a rating, topped by only the mark of Seattle s Russell Wilson. Arizona s Carson Palmer ranked third in the NFL at 104.6, followed by New England s Tom Brady at and Washington s Kirk Cousins at Dalton is the first Bengals QB to lead the AFC in passer rating since Boomer Esiason with a 92.1 mark in Esiason also led the AFC in Ken Anderson led the AFC four times (1974, 75, 81 and 82). Bengals QBs have led the NFL in passing five times four by Anderson and most recently by Esiason in 88. Dalton was in the NFL s top five every week since the conclusion of Week 3 play. He had two weeks at No. 1, four weeks at No. 2 and six weeks at No. 3. He was the NFL leader through Week 7 as well as through Week 13. Dalton s season numbers were 255-for-386 (66.1 percent) for 3250 yards 2 (250.0 per game), with 25 TDs and seven INTs. He ranked second in average gain per attempt (8.42). He tied for third in percentage of passes for TDs (6.5), eighth in completion percentage (66.1) and eighth in lowest INT percentage (1.8). Dalton in, Palmer out: Bengals QB Andy Dalton s season passer rating is a Bengals record, eclipsing by more than five points the previous mark of set by Carson Palmer in Dalton missed the last three regular-season games due to a thumb fracture suffered in Game 13, but he had far more than enough attempts (386) on the season to remain qualified for the record. The Bengals use the same standard employed by the NFL for season passer rankings, a minimum of 224 attempts, an average of 14.0 over 16 games. Dalton ranked first in the AFC and second in the NFL in season rating. Russell Wilson of Seattle led the NFL at Tom Brady of New England was second in the AFC at Dalton had eight among his 13 played with a triple-digit rating, topping his previous career high of six in a season. The Bengals record for 100-plus ratings in a full season is 11, by Palmer in 05. Dalton claims a road wins mark: Bengals QB Andy Dalton didn t play in the last three games, two of those on the road, but he already has won 24 road games in his five-year career. Cincinnati s Dec. 6 win at Cleveland was his 24th, and Elias Sports Bureau reports that s the most by any NFL QB in his first five seasons (record researched back to the 1970 merger). Prior to the Cleveland game, Dalton shared the mark of 23 with Dan Marino, Ben Roethlisberger and Matt Ryan. Dalton has 14 losses on the road, and a road winning percentage of.632. Andy and Manning, A.J. and Moss: On Dec. 6 at Cleveland, Bengals QB Andy Dalton passed the 3000-yard mark in passing for the fifth of his five seasons, and WR A.J. Green went to 1000 receiving yards for the fifth time in his five years. Both are in two-man clubs. The only other passer to debut with five straight 3000-yarders was Peyton Manning of Indianapolis ( ). Manning went on to play his first 13 seasons with 3000 or more, then sat out a year due to injury, and then he did it three more times, through Randy Moss got 1000 receiving for six straight seasons for Minnesota ( ) before falling below the 1000 mark in 04. Bengals top AFC in scoring defense: Though they barely missed out on leading the NFL in scoring defense, the Bengals did lead the AFC in fewest points allowed in the 2015 regular season, yielding 279 points (an average of 17.4 per game). Seattle gave up only six points in its season-ending win over Arizona to move past Cincinnati for the league lead in scoring defense with a total of 277. Kansas City finished third at 287, followed by Denver (296) and Minnesota (302). The Bengals second-place NFL finish in scoring defense is their best rank ever. Their previous high was fifth, by the 1972 team that allowed 16.4 points per game, and by the 2013 club that allowed The 2013 team led the AFC, meaning the Bengals have led the conference in scoring defense in two of the last three seasons. The 279 points allowed by the 2015 Bengals is the team s best mark in franchise history for a 16-game season. The previous best was 284 points in Opponent scoring average is not solely the product of the defense. Offense and special teams play a role in limiting TDs by return and in establishing field position. But the credit and primary responsibility for limiting points of course rests with the defense. My job is to limit points, period, says defensive coordinator Paul Guenther. That s what I get paid to do. It ain t holding them to 200 yards on offense and have three plays be touchdowns. Regardless where we get the ball and that is a point I make to the players if we turn it over (on offense) and the ball s on the 10-yard line let s go play defense, hold them to three. If they get an interception return down to the 20, they re in field goal range, hold them to three. I m paid to keep them off the scoreboard. Not quite on record scoring differential: The 2015 Bengals outscored their opponents , an average of 8.75 points per game, second-best in team history. The record in that category is 8.93 points per game, by a 1976 team that outscored foes over a 14-game schedule. The average game score for the Bengals on the season was 26.2-to The Cincinnati defense s 279 points allowed was the franchise s fewest for a

(Not quite on record scoring differential, continued) 16-game season. The previous low yield for a 16-game season was 284, in Cincinnati s average-per-game yield of 17.4 ranks fifth in franchise history, behind four teams from the era of 14-game seasons. The offense s 419 points ranked sixth in franchise history. The club record is 448, by the 1988 Super Bowl team. The team s 26.2 per-game average also is sixth in team history (including seasons of less than 16 games). Atkins, Whitworth first-team AP All-Pros: Bengals OT Andrew Whitworth and DT Geno Atkins were named Jan. 7 as first-team members on the NFL s flagship all-star squad, the Associated Press All-Pro team. Covering both the AFC and NFC, the team is selected by a national panel of pro football writers. The other first-team DT was Aaron Donald of St. Louis, and the other OT was Joe Thomas of Cleveland. Atkins was also a first-team selection in Whitworth was a second-team choice for Atkins and Whitworth were among five Bengals selected in initial voting for the Pro Bowl. Also in the Pro Bowl are TE Tyler Eifert, WR A.J. Green and S Reggie Nelson. Nelson was a second-team All-Pro for Peko at 102 and counting: Bengals DT Domata Peko played in his 102nd consecutive Bengals game (regular season and postseason) in the Wild Card playoff vs. Pittsburgh, extending the longest streak on the seasonending roster among non-specialists for NFL games as well as Bengals games. The 10th-year Cincinnati vet s streak began with Cincinnati s Wild Card playoff contest in the 2009 season. He had missed the last five regular-season games of 09 due to a knee injury. The longest Bengals consecutive games streak among all players on the season-end roster belongs to long-snapping specialist Clark Harris, who is at 113. Harris has not missed a game since joining Cincinnati for Game 6 of the 2009 season. If Peko plays in all 16 regular-season games in 2016, he ll tie former long snapper Brad St. Louis for fifth place all-time in consecutive Bengals games played, at 118. And Peko of course has played considerably more snaps per game than St. Louis did. The top two players in consecutive Bengals games played are, like St. Louis, primarily specialists whose snap counts were relatively low. The leader is P Lee Johnson at 172, and in second place at 153 is Pat McInally, who did play WR but spent much of his career as primarily a punter. The every-down position player with the most consecutive Bengals games played is LB Reggie Williams, third overall at 144. NT Tim Krumrie is fourth at 127, and then comes St. Louis at 118. Peko had started 101 consecutive Bengals games going into the Pittsburgh contest, but his starting streak ended, as Cincinnati ran its first play without him, opening in a nickel front. The longest Bengals starting streak on the season-end roster now belongs to S Reggie Nelson, at 47. Nelson has not missed a start since Game 4 of 2013, when he was inactive due to a hamstring injury. OT Andrew Whitworth has the most total Bengals games (158) and Bengals starts (154) on the season-end roster. The player with the most total NFL games (172) and starts (158) is LB A.J. Hawk. All streaks and totals noted above include regular-season and postseason. Dunlap nabs NFL s Bengals sacks mark: Bengals DE Carlos Dunlap finished the regular season with 13.5 sacks, which the NFL recognizes officially as the most in Bengals history. Sacks have been an official NFL stat only since 1982, and the highest previous total for a Bengal since 82 was 13.0, by DE Eddie Edwards in Dunlap reached the 13.5 plateau with 3.0 sacks in Game 15 at Denver, the first three-sack game by a Bengal since 3.0 by LB Vincent Rey in Game 10 of But the Bengals date the club s own sacks records to a starting point of 1976, and the Cincinnati record that the club recognizes is 22.0, by DE Coy Bacon in 76. Dunlap s total is now second in Bengals annals. His 13.5 is a career-high, topping the 9.5 he logged as a rookie in Dunlap now has 49.0 career sacks, fourth-most in Bengals history. Earlier this season, Dunlap moved ahead of DE Justin Smith (43.5) into fourth. Cincinnati s all-time leader is Edwards, who had 83.5 sacks in 12 seasons ( ). LB Reggie Williams had 62.5 in 14 seasons and DE Ross Browner had 59.0 in nine seasons. Dunlap posts Bengals best sack ranking: DE Carlos Dunlap s career-high 13.5 sacks ranked fourth in the NFL and third in the AFC in the 2015 regular season. J.J. Watt of Houston led the league with 17.5, followed 3 by Oakland s Khalil Mack (15.0) and Detroit s Ziggy Ansah (14.5). Dunlap s fourth-place NFL rank is the best-ever by a Bengal. The previous high was tied for sixth by DT Geno Atkins (12.5) in The previous best Bengals AFC finish was fourth by Atkins in 12. The Carlos roundup: In addition to leading the 2015 Bengals in sacks, DE Carlos Dunlap led the team in total QB hits (31) and blocked kicks (two, both field goals), and he ranked second in total tackles-for-loss (16). He also led the D-line in tackles (55). Dunlap ranked second in forced fumbles (two) and had one fumble recovery. His career totals of 12 forced fumbles and eight fumble recoveries are NFL highs for players on the season-ending roster. He was one of only two NFL players to block two field goals in DE Quinton Dial of San Francisco also had two. Dunlap s emergence as a Bengals key player and leader has been gradual but steady. The former Florida Gator had barely turned 21 years old when Cincinnati drafted him in the second round in Asked recently to compare the Dunlap of 2015 with the Dunlap of 2010, head coach Marvin Lewis said: He does what we want to see much more often. He s matured as a man and as a player. He tries to do things the right way, and that s been key for him. Nelson shares league INTs lead: Bengals S Reggie Nelson tied with Kansas City rookie CB Marcus Peters for the NFL lead in interceptions in 2015, with eight. Though he did not pick off a pass over the final three regular-season games, Nelson did have an INT in five straight games (Games 9-13), tying the longest such streak in Bengals history. Nelson s eight picks were two short of CB Deltha O Neal s Bengals record for INTs in a season (10 in 2005). Nelson tied David Fulcher s club record for INTs by a safety (eight in 1989). Nelson is known for taking great angles on deep pass patterns and arriving just in time to contest for the catch. He had a good chance for a ninth INT in the season finale vs. Baltimore, but he was not his usual sure-handed self. I just flat-out dropped that one, he said. The Bengals have never had an outright winner of the league INTs title for a season. The only previous Bengal with a piece of the league title was O Neal, whose 10 in 2005 tied Ty Law of the Jets for the top spot. The Bengals claim one outright AFC interceptions crown, that coming with CB Ken Riley s nine picks in Riley was second in the NFL, behind Monte Jackson of the L.A. Rams (10). Riley also tied for the AFC lead in 1982 (five) and 1983 (eight), and O Neal s 10 in 2005 also tied for the AFC lead. Nelson has 30 career INTs, and 23 of those have come as a Bengal. He started the season tied for ninth place in all-time Bengals INTs, but now he s alone in sixth place, just one behind current teammate Leon Hall (fifth-all-time at 24, including two picks this season). Nelson has 115 return yards this season and 333 for his Bengals career. He has one Bengals INT for a TD, a 75-yarder at Seattle in Riley is the Bengals all-time INTs leader by a prohibitive margin. He had 65 over his 15-year career ( ), nearly twice as many as CB Louis Breeden ( ), who had 33. Atkins shares league lead in interior-line sacks: Bengals DT Geno Atkins sack of Baltimore s Ryan Mallett in the regular-season finale gave him 11.0 sacks for the season. He led AFC interior linemen in sacks, and he tied St. Louis DT Aaron Donald and Carolina DT Kawann Short for the top mark among NFL interior linemen. Atkins had trailed Donald and Short by one entering Week 17, but neither Donald nor Short had a sack in the final game. Atkins also had one sack in the Wild Card playoff vs. Pittsburgh. Atkins and Donald were voted as the first-team DTs on the prestigious Associated Press All-Pro team, and Short was voted second-team. This marks the third time in Atkins six pro seasons that he has either led the league or shared the lead in sacks by interior linemen. And one of Atkins six seasons, the 2013 campaign, was significantly cut short by injury. Though the Bengals have never had an overall sacks season leader in conference or league, Atkins led NFL interior linemen by a wide margin with his 12.5 sacks in 2012, and he tied for the league s interior line lead in 2011, when he had 7.5. Atkins finished second overall on the Bengals in sacks in 2015, trailing only DE Carlos Dunlap (13.5). Atkins led the Bengals in total tackles for loss (17), a stat that includes rushing plays, and he ranked second on the team in total QB hits (19). I think Geno has also been playing the run exceptionally well, says head coach Marvin Lewis. I think that always gets a little underrated in Geno s case. I thought he had an excellent year last year playing the run, and this year he came

(Atkins shares league lead in interior-line sacks, continued) back much stronger in his lower body, and you see that in his play. If they try to single-block him in the running game, we know the ball is coming back to us. Only teammates with 10: The Bengals were one of only two teams in the NFL in 2015 with two players at 10.0 or above in sacks. DE Carlos Dunlap had 13.5 and DT Geno Atkins had The other team was Houston, with DE J.J. Watt at a league-leading 17.5 and LB Whitney Mercilus at Prior to this season, the Bengals had two players in double digits in sacks only once in the last 23 seasons. That season was 2012, when Atkins had 12.5 and DE Michael Johnson had The last time before 2012 was 1981, when LB Reggie Williams had 11.0 and DE Eddie Edwards had Burfict completes comeback from knee woes: Put a check mark next to one Bengals development that was in the Hoped For category as the 2015 season began. LB Vontaze Burfict came back strongly from a serious knee injury. Training camp opened with Burfict still in heavy rehab from a 2014 knee injury. Unable to practice in preseason, he was placed on the Reserve/PUP list to start the regular season, shelved for a minimum six games. But the 2013 season Pro Bowler came back right according to schedule. He was cleared to resume practice at about the same time the six-game PUP waiting period was over, and he made his season debut in Game 7, Nov. 1 at Pittsburgh. He had solo tackles on each of Pittsburgh s first two snaps. He went on to play in every game, and despite the six missed ones, he finished the regular season ranked third on the team in tackles (74). He led the team in tackles per game played (7.4). He also had a sack, two interceptions and five total passes defensed (tied for the team s front-seven lead). His snap counts increased as the season went on, and he was a particularly major player in the team s last two wins, Dec. 20 at San Francisco and Jan. 3 vs. Baltimore. In the Wild Card playoff vs. Pittsburgh, Burfict s six tackles included a 12- yard sack, and he had an interception in the fourth quarter. It s a huge impact on our defense to have Vontaze back, says head coach Marvin Lewis. He has great innate knowledge of the game, and he brings a huge measure of physicality. He impacts the team both physically and mentally. Burfict led the team with a personal season-high of 12 tackles in the regularseason finale vs. Baltimore, and he showed his athleticism with a diving interception at the Baltimore 33 early in the third quarter. It set up a short drive for a TD that put Cincinnati ahead to stay at In the Bengals win at San Francisco on Dec. 20, Burfict was a key performer as Cincinnati rose from a 7-0 lead late in the second quarter to a commanding 21-0 lead at halftime. His 10-yard sack of Blaine Gabbert put San Francisco in a third-and-18 hole from its 12-yard line with just over four minutes to play, and the Bengals took over at the San Francisco 36 after a short punt. Cincinnati scored in five plays, taking a 14-0 lead with 1:17 remaining in the half. And on San Francisco s second play of its next possession, Burfict flagged down a bobbled reception attempt by TE Vance McDonald at the 49ers 36, returning 16 yards to the 20. On the next play, the Bengals struck for a 20-yard TD pass from AJ McCarron to TE Tyler Kroft, taking a 21-0 lead at the 0:53 mark. Burfict led the team in tackles in four games. His 11 solo tackles on Dec. 13 vs. Pittsburgh marked the top solos total in a game by any Bengal this season. Burfict was the Bengals tackling leader by a wide margin in both 2012 and 13. Last season he played in only five games. Tez is that bruiser; that attitude you need, says S George Iloka. We have a lot of personalities, but we need a guy like him. I m so happy to have him back. Burfict s rehab was long and difficult due to the nature of his injury (microfracture). Rehab periods often extend to a full year, and Burfict went 372 days between last year s Baltimore game and the 2015 Pittsburgh contest. I always stayed praying, Burfict said of his rehab period. There were some hard days when I didn t feel like doing rehab, but Marvin (Lewis) made sure he called me and made sure I got into the stadium. Teammates kept pushing me. They knew when I was out of it. I ve been pushed by teammates, coaches, Mr. (Mike) Brown... and I thank them for it. McCarron 2-2 spells winner : AJ McCarron was one of the biggest QB winners in college football history at Alabama, leading two national championship teams while posting a 36-4 record, and he showed many of the same winning qualities in his four games in 2015 as a Bengals starter (three in regular season and one in postseason). They were his first four NFL starts, as he replacing the injured Andy Dalton. The Bengals were scoreless through three quarters in their Wild Card playoff game vs. Pittsburgh, but McCarron posted a passer rating in the fourth 4 quarter in rallying Cincinnati from a 15-0 deficit to a lead. His 25-yard TD pass to A.J. Green put the Bengals on top by one with 1:50 to play. But the Bengals had only one offensive snap the rest of the way, a lost fumble by HB Jeremy Hill that gave Pittsburgh the chance for its winning field goal drive. McCarron was 2-1 in the starter s role in the regular season, with wins Dec. 20 at San Francisco and Jan. 3 vs. Baltimore. His only regular-season loss came in overtime on the road against a Denver team with the NFL s top yardage defense. McCarron posted a passer rating for his three regular-season starts, and only five qualifiers for the 2015 NFL passing title finished above that. In so doing, he became the first QB in Bengals history to not throw an INT in his first three starts. And even in his first significant play thrust into the lineup with scant preparation after Dalton was injured Dec. 13 vs. Pittsburgh McCarron threw for 280 yards and two TDs (and two INTs) in three quarters. We re glad we have him, head coach Marvin Lewis said after the Pittsburgh playoff game. I m proud of him, and proud of what he did, and I know he ll be nothing but better next season. Our quarterback situation, with Andy and AJ, is the best it s been since 2004 or 05, with Jon (Kitna) and Carson (Palmer). We feel pretty good about things. Eifert returns, and keeps scoring: After playing only nine snaps over four games (Games 12-15), due to a stinger and later a concussion, TE Tyler Eifert returned to Bengals action in the regular-season finale and the Wild Card playoff vs. Pittsburgh. He scored his 13th TD of the season on Jan. 3 vs. Baltimore and tied for the team lead in receptions (five) in the playoff, gaining 58 yards. Eifert was selected in the initial voting for a berth in the Jan. 31 Pro Bowl. His 13 TDs were the most by a Bengal since 2001, when HB Corey Dillon had 13. The last Bengal with more than 13 was WR Carl Pickens, whose 1995 total of 17 is the franchise record. Eifert s missed time may have cost him a chance to challenge Pickens mark, and the hiatus quite likely cost him the NFL season lead in TDs. He finished just one short of the league-leading 14 total that was shared by four players. Two other players joined Eifert at 13. But we re not about stats and Tyler s not about stats, said offensive coordinator Hue Jackson. The important thing is how he can help us going forward, and everybody knows he can help us a lot. The Bengals have never had a player lead the NFL in touchdowns for a full season. Only one Bengal, WR Carl Pickens with 17 in 1995, has been the sole leader in the AFC. Two Bengals FB Pete Johnson with 14 in 1983 and FB Ickey Woods with 15 in 88 have tied for the AFC touchdowns lead. Prior to his injury troubles, Eifert had already far surpassed the the Bengals TE mark for touchdowns in a season. That mark entering 2015 had been nine, shared by Rodney Holman (1989) and Bob Trumpy ( 69). Eifert had three TDs on Nov. 5 vs. Cleveland, tying one of the Bengals oldest records, TDs by a TE in a game. Prior to the Cleveland game, the only TE with three in a game was Trumpy, who had three at Houston on Nov. 9, Eifert had 52 receptions and 615 receiving yards on the season, ranking third on the team in both categories. Arguably, Tyler s the best tight end I ve ever been around, said Jackson. He s tough as nails. He blocks better than people think, and of course he can catch the ball with anybody. He has great hands, great moves and speed for his size (6-5, 250). The sky truly is the limit for this guy. T.J. Houshmandzadeh, who played 11 years in the NFL and caught 70 or more passes in six seasons, including a Bengals-record 112 in 2007, also had unusually high praise for Eifert after working with the Bengals as an intern assistant coach this past spring. Every time I see that guy run a route, I can t believe it, Houshmandzadeh said. I can t believe that man. He s too big to be moving like that. That s crazy. Eifert had a good 2013 rookie season, working with veteran TE Jermaine Gresham in a two-te base offense. He caught 39 passes for 445 yards and two TDs. But he played only eight snaps last season. On the third of his three catches for 37 yards in the season opener at Baltimore, he suffered an elbow injury that would put him out for the remainder of the season. QB Andy Dalton says Eifert is always a target against smaller defenders who aren t that much faster than No. 85. He s a big matchup mismatch for us, QB Andy Dalton said. The more that he can do, the better we are. Bernard makes much of chances: HB Giovani Bernard was the Bengals second-ranked player in yards from scrimmage (1202) in He was second on the team in rushing yards (730) and had 472 as a receiver, ranked fourth on the team. He averaged 75.1 yards from scrimmage per game. Bernard ranked only 23rd in the NFL in total rushing yards, but he was

(Bernard makes much of chances, continued) among the NFL s better rushers in making use of his opportunities. His 4.7-yard per-carry average ranked fourth among the top 23, and his 154 total carries was the second-fewest among the top 23. The average is key, says Bernard. That s what you want as a running back. Make the most of your opportunities. That s how this offense rolls. As long as we win. Whatever it takes. Bernard had a 100-yard rushing game (20-for-123) on Sept. 20 vs. San Diego. He scored two TDs, both rushing. Bernard made RB receiving history: On Nov. 22 at Arizona, Bengals third-year HB Giovani Bernard set a Bengals record for receiving yards in a game by a running back. Bernard had a team-best 128 yards (on eight catches), eclipsing the mark of 119 set in 1998 by HB Brandon Bennett at Pittsburgh. His eight receptions tied his career high. Also during the season, Bernard had key receiving gains on game-deciding drives in wins at Baltimore and at Pittsburgh. Bernard s 56 receptions in 2013 are a season record for Bengals RBs. He currently holds the No. 3 spot with his 514 receiving yards as a rookie. The top two receiving yards seasons by a Bengals HB were both turned in by James Brooks, who gained 686 in 1986 and 576 in 85. Hill finds the end zone: HB Jeremy Hill s 38-yard TD run in the regular-season finale vs. Baltimore gave him 12 TDs for the season, second on the team to TE Tyler Eifert (13) and tied for most by a Bengals RB since 2006, when Rudi Johnson scored 12. Hill also scored a TD in the Wild Card playoff vs. Pittsburgh, on a one-yard run, but he had a crucial lost fumble in the fourth quarter. Hill had 11 rushing TDs and one as a receiver. He tied for the NFL lead in rushing TDs, joined by Atlanta s Devonta Freeman, Pittsburgh s DeAngelo Williams and Minnesota s Adrian Peterson. He ranked tied for eighth in the NFL in total TDs by all players. The 700 club: Second-year HB Jeremy Hill took his second Bengals season rushing title in 2015, with 794 yards, but third-year HB Giovani Bernard was a close second at 730. It marked the first time since 1988 that the Bengals have had two 700-yard rushers. The 88 club easily did so, as FB Ickey Woods rushed for 1066 and HB James Brooks added 931. The Bengals came close-butno-cigar to having a pair of 700-yard rushers in both 2013 and Bernard was second with 680 (behind BenJarvus Green-Ellis) in 2013, and Bernard was second (behind Hill) with 695 in Teammates on Giovani and Jeremy: Here s WR A.J. Green on HB Giovani Bernard: Gio isn t big (5-9, 205), but he s probably one of the toughest guys on this team, in addition to being explosive with the ball. He practices his butt off every day and plays his butt off every game. So whatever he does it doesn t really surprise me, because he is just going to give it his all, no matter how big the opponent is. And here s OT Andrew Whitworth on the surprising elusiveness and speed of the 235-pound Jeremy Hill: We ve had some very good, powerful rushers here... Rudi Johnson, Cedric Benson... but Jeremy s as big and powerful and probably has a better overall skill set. He s a big back who can run like a little back with 30 rushes: In their Dec. 28 loss at Denver, the Bengals had 33 rushing attempts. The result halted a streak of 22 straight games with 30 or more rushes which Cincinnati had won. The last such Bengals loss before Denver was on Nov. 10, 2013, in an overtime game at Baltimore. The Bengals were 8-1 on the season with 30 or more rushes. The 30-rushes-spells-success theory holds up strongly for head coach Marvin Lewis entire 13-season career. The Bengals have had 98 regular-season games under Lewis at the 30 mark or above, and Cincinnati stands in those contests, for a winning percentage of.827. It s not always the rushing yardage total that s most important, says Lewis. When you re running the ball a lot, it s a sign that even though the yardage will vary, you re controlling the ball, controlling the clock, and keeping your defense off the field. As it shows for us that is very likely going to be a winning combination. The Bengals are 37-2 (.949) under Lewis when an individual rusher records 25 or more carries, but no rusher did that this past season. The Bengals are (.846) under Lewis with an individual 100-yard rusher. They had one 5 individual 100-yard game this season, 123 by Giovani Bernard in a Sept. 20 win vs. San Diego. We love seeing a guy get 100 yards, Lewis says, but sometimes a guy can break one big gain and then get to 100 even though you may not be running as consistently well and controlling the game like you do when you get those those high-carry numbers. Amazing A.J. 2.0: For the first few years of WR A.J. Green s dazzling NFL career, he seemed to impress fans most by his ability to make circus catches while gyrating in midair in a manner almost not human. Green still showed that ability in season five, but he wowed onlookers even more with his uncanny ability to keep both feet in bounds when making catches near the sideline or the borders of the end zone. The latest of numerous examples came in the regular-season finale vs. Baltimore, when he toe-tapped in the end zone to haul in a five-yard TD pass from AJ McCarron that put the Bengals ahead to stay at It was the sort of play that invites a close look at replays, but as is almost always the case with Green, the close-up and slow-motion videos backed up the TD call. Asked about Green s dancing, McCarron said: I mess with him. For him to do so well with the sidelines, he is a terrible dancer. You would think being able to toe tap and everything, he would be better (as a dancer). Seriously, he is just an excellent player. My job is to put it where the DB isn t, and he goes up and makes plays like that. I think we have a good feel for each other, and it s working. Green was selected in the initial voting for this season s Pro Bowl, his fifth time to make the Pro Bowl in five seasons, all in the initial voting. Green is the first Bengals player at any position to make the Pro Bowl in his first five seasons. Only Chad Johnson, with six, has had more career Pro Bowl selections as a Bengals WR. Green finished the regular season with team leads in receptions (86) and receiving yards (1297). He had 10 TDs, hitting double figures for the third time in five seasons, and his 15.1-yard per-catch average was tops on the team for any receiver with more than two catches. He also had a TD catch in the Wild Card playoff vs. Pittsburgh, a 25-yarder in the fourth quarter that put the Bengals ahead He fell a bit short of his previous career regular-season highs in major categories, but he faced more than a few occasions in 2015 when defenses clearly decided they would overload on him and take their chances with other receivers. And Green has a long track record of not focusing on his own numbers. We had a winning year, won our division, and we have a lot of offensive weapons, which is great, Green says. I have no worries about my numbers. I know my chances will come. It s simple on this team. When your number is called, make the play. Green finished 14th in the NFL in receptions and eighth in receiving yards. Some players might not make the Pro Bowl with rankings like that, but in Green s case, it s clear the voters know there s more to him than raw numbers. Green s 227 ranked second: WR A.J. Green s career-best 227 receiving yards on Sept. 27 at Baltimore stood for five weeks as the highest total in the NFL for 2015, but the accomplishment fell to second on Nov. 8, when Pittsburgh s Antonio Brown racked up 284 yards vs. Oakland. Green s 227 still ranked second in the league at season s end. Green s 227 ranks second in Bengals history, behind only Chad Johnson s 260 vs. San Diego in Green also claims the Bengals third-best receiving yards total in a game, a 224-yard effort last season vs. Pittsburgh. Green had two TDs during his personal-record day at Baltimore. His first score was an 80-yarder, third-longest of his career, bringing the Bengals back from a deficit. He caught an Andy Dalton pass in stride near midfield and ran the rest of the way, eluding a couple of would-be Ravens tacklers near the Ravens 25. His second score was a seven yarder with 2:10 to play that erased a deficit and posted the final victory margin of Green through 19: On Sept. 11, the Bengals signed WR A.J. Green to a contract extension, running through the 2019 season. Green previously had been under contract through the current season. Everyone in football, and people who follow football, know that A.J. is a special talent, said head coach Marvin Lewis. He makes plays that you wouldn t think could be made. He s an outstanding teammate and a leader you can rely on. He still has a long, great future ahead of him in Cincinnati. Green (6-4, 207; Georgia) was selected fourth overall by the Bengals in the 2011 Draft and has been a Pro Bowl player on a playoff team in each of his five seasons. Green and Dalton, also drafted in 2011, are the most productive QB-

(Green through 19, continued) WR duo in NFL history for players in their first four seasons. Their 324 completions and 4735 yards are the most for any duo in seasons 1-4, and their 33 TD connections are tied for the most, along with Dan Marino and Mark Clayton of Miami ( ). Everyone knows I just want to play football, Green said. Playing in Cincinnati has been great for me and I want to stay here. So getting this done is great. I ve still got tons I want to accomplish in the NFL. Andy the comeback king: QB Andy Dalton s leadership of a game-winning drive on Nov. 1 at Pittsburgh was his third on the season in the fourth quarter or overtime. Dalton completed a nine-yard TD strike to WR A.J. Green and put Cincinnati ahead 13-10, in an eventual win. Dalton s key play, even more than the TD pass, came when he avoided pressure on thirdand-five from the Pittsburgh 40 and managed a shovel pass to HB Giovani Bernard, who took the ball 23 yards to the Pittsburgh 17. Dalton s earlier comeback efforts were in Week 3 at Baltimore and in Week 5 vs. Seattle. Dalton now has 16 such drives in his career. Elias Sports Bureau credits quarterbacks with game-winning drives when they lead their team either from behind or from a tie. In Dalton s case this season, all three game-winners have come with Cincinnati trailing. In the Seattle game, Dalton completed 13 of 15 passes for 135 yards in the fourth quarter and overtime. He threw a 10-yard TD pass to TE Tyler Eifert, scored himself on a physical five-yard run and led the team to two field goals. On Sept. 27 at Baltimore, Dalton was the ultimate counterpuncher. He may have seemed down for the count after the Ravens sacked him in the third quarter, forcing a fumble they returned for a TD and a lead. But as the Cincinnati Enquirer said in a sports page one headline, When there were questions, Dalton answered. He struck back with an 80-yard TD to WR A.J. Green to erase the deficit, and he led an 80-yard drive, all on passes, to later erase a Baltimore lead. It provided the winning points in a decision. Dalton has now led three straight fourth-quarter comeback wins against the Ravens, and he really did it twice in this season s game, because he led the Bengals back from deficits of and 24-21, both in the game s final seven minutes. Offensive coordinator Hue Jackson had this to say about Dalton s demeanor in the double-comeback win at Baltimore: There was a calmness. There was a veteran player who had been through the wars, who had been through a lot of things here, who looked me in the eye and said, OK, Coach, let s go. Don t even worry about it. That s how it was, and that s what I ve been looking for. On Dalton s growth as a leader, head coach Marvin Lewis says: Andy s always had that poise, Lewis said. He s had only rare occasions where he let one bad play lead to another. To me, that s what makes Andy Dalton tick. He hasn t changed, but the other guys have raised their level around him. When things don t quite go their way, they are mentally tough enough to do the things that let Andy do his thing. If a quarterback doesn t have that, that s when (the criticism) all seems to come down on him. Andy the leader: OT Andrew Whitworth has this to say about QB Andy Dalton: The thing that strikes me about No. 14 is that every single season, I see him become better at something else. This year it s been leadership and taking control. He s doing a great job with it. If he continues to lead us that way, there s plenty of talent on this side of the football for us to be really good. One of the things Andy doesn t get enough credit for is how he changes things all the time. One of the things that has made this offense successful is Andy s ability to get us into the right play. Dalton s platform for leadership includes the following other accomplishments since joining the Bengals as a second-round draft choice in 2011: He has joined Baltimore s Joe Flacco as the only starting QBs in the Super Bowl era to lead playoff teams his first five seasons. He set a Bengals record in 2015 for season passer rating (106.3) eclipsing by more than five points the former record of by Carson Palmer in He and Peyton Manning are the only NFL QBs to pass for 3000 or more yards in each of their first five seasons. Prior to the thumb fracture that has sidelined him for the last four games (three regular-season and one postseason), Dalton had not missed a start in 81 career opportunities, including postseason. His streak of 77 consecutive regular-season starts, which ended Dec. 20, is a Bengals record, topping 61 by Boomer Esiason from His streak ranks third in NFL history for the start of a career, trailing only Peyton Manning (208) and Joe Flacco (122). His regular-season winning percentage of.656 ( record) is the best of any Bengals QB with 10 or more starts. He holds club records for passing yards (4293) and TD passes (33), both set in His career 14.5-to-1 ratio of TD passes to INTs (87-6) in the red zone ranks sixth among active NFL passers. He is the only Bengals passer to throw for 300-plus yards in four consecutive games (2013). Andy s excellent vacation: QB Andy Dalton s strong performance in 2015 can be attributed in part to his spending offseason time for the second straight year with noted QB instructor Tom House. I think that s the key to a pro s pro, said head coach Marvin Lewis. A guy who wants to be at the top of his game has to spend time on himself all year long, just like a professional golfer does. They go to different people all the time, they re always searching for answers and wondering, What is out there that can make me better? You re not trying to re-invent the wheel, but thinking, What you can do to enhance the things you currently do and make you a better player, and make you more efficient at your job? Turning over those stones is an important part in Andy s maturity and development moving forward. Dalton wasn t taking a repeat course this past offseason. He was moving to a new level. I started where I left off the year before, he said. I was farther along with everything we were doing when I went back. That s where I want to be. I m able to do a lot of the more advanced stuff they have because I have a good understanding for what we are doing. It s not stuff that is strange or different. Just working core, shoulders, and getting everything working for you so you get everything into the throw. Asked where he hoped to see the sessions pay the most dividends in 2015, Dalton said: Mechanically staying sound throughout the whole year. Sometimes you get into the mid-to-late season, and you ve been so focused on defenses and the mental side of it, you may not take as much time thinking mechanically and making sure everything is in sync. That s where I m really trying to use it; to make sure I have everything going for me toward the end of the season A 1-in-500 comeback: The previous item details Andy Dalton s multiple comeback efforts this season, including the Oct. 11 game vs. Seattle, in which the Bengals rallied from a 24-7 fourth-quarter deficit to a OT win. But the Seattle game stands out from all the others in a historical sense. Elias Sports Bureau reports that since Week 15 of the 2010 season, when Philadelphia overcame a 21-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat the N.Y. Giants, the Bengals are the only NFL team to win a regular-season or postseason game after trailing by 17 or more in the final period. Through this past week s playoff action, there have been 532 such instances since Philadelphia s win, with the Bengals owning the 1 in a 1-and-531 aggregate record. That works out to a winning percentage of.0019 for teams facing the 17-point deficit. 6 Andy and the next generation: Andy Dalton has had his share of statistically rubbing elbows with the greats. This season he joined Peyton Manning as the only NFL players to pass for 3000 or more yards in each of their first five seasons. In 2012, he nudged in right behind Peyton Manning and Dan Marino for most TD passes by a QB in his first two seasons. He has surpassed Manning, Marino, Brett Favre and others in leading consecutive playoff finishes (four) from his rookie year onward (and he started with a team that went 4-12 the season before). He has the most road wins (24) by a QB in his first five seasons, as on Dec. 6 at Cleveland he broke a tie at 23 with Dan Marino, Ben Roethlisberger and Matt Ryan. And in the 2015 regular season, he ranked first in the AFC and second in the NFL in passing (106.3 rating), ahead of, among others, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers and Ben Roethlisberger. Is Dalton yet the equal of Marino, Manning, Favre, Rodgers etc.? No. But he s 28. His time and others times could be coming. You get compared to guys like Peyton, who s 39, Brady who s 38, Rodgers who s 31, Dalton says. Then there s that next group that s got to come up, and that s kind of what I m part of. My goal is to be like one of those guys whenever that time comes. Though Dalton hasn t yet won a playoff game, Manning needed his first five seasons ( ) to lead the Indianapolis Colts to three playoff berths, and the Colts were eliminated in the first round all three times ( 99, 00, 02). Manning led his first playoff wins (two) in 2003, his sixth season as a Colt.
