Anthony Leandri This Week s Notes (8/29) A NEW SEASON BEGINS The Northern Michigan University football team opens the 2011 campaign at home at MSU-Mankato. This marks the second year in a row that the Wildcats open at home against the Mavericks. Last season, MSU defeated the Wildcats 7-6. NMU returns 31 letterwimners and welcomes 28 first-year players to the 2011 Wildcats roster. COACH Head coach Bernie Anderson enters his sixth season as head coach at NMU. Anderson led the Wildcats to a 5-6 record last season and a 5-5 record in the GLIAC. Anderson is at NMU and during his 24-years as a head coach, he has an overall collegiate record of TEAM LEADERS The NMU offense is led by Carter Kopach. The senior appeared in six games last season, throwing for 1,079 yds. and eight touchdowns. He also ran for another six touchdowns on 274 yds. The Wildcats defense is led by First Team All-GLIAC linebacker Eddie Knoblock. The senior led the NMU defense last year with 83 tackles (44 solo and 39 assisted). Knoblock had five interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns. PRESEASON POLLS The Wildcats were selected fourth in the GLIAC North Division Preseason Poll. NMU received 43 points, one less than third place Saginaw Valley State. Grand Valley State was selected first with 85 points. NEW COACHES The Wildcats started the season with four new coaches. Josh Miller is the defensive line coach. Miller played and coached at Saginaw Valley State. He also played in the CFL. Rob Erwin is the wide receivers. Erwin coached on the offensive end at Montanta State University and Augustana College. Brian Mitz and Anthony Leandri both played for the Wildcats. Mitz coaches the running backs. He had 87 yards of receiving and a touchdown during his two-year stint at NMU. He also played at Harper College and Northern Illinois. Leandri was a kicker for the Cats, making 11 career field goals and 73 kickoffs. Leandri will work with the special teams unit. THIS-N-THAT Demetri Stewart returns to NMU for his senior season. Stewart was third on the team with 65 total tackles in 2009 at the linebacker spot.. Opponent Sept. 1: Minnesota State-Mankato Series: Tied 2-2, 2010 Last Season: 6-5, 5-5 Northern Sun THE MAVERICKS The Mavericks defeated the Wildcats in last season s home opener 7-6, in route to a 6-5 season. The 2011 season marks the 85th season of MSU football. MSU returns 34 letterwinners, including 12 starters. The Mavericks are led on offense by quarterback Jon Wolf. The sophomore appeared in all 11 games last season as a true freshman, throwing for 177 yds. and 3 touchdowns. On defense, the Mavericks will be led by sophomore Chris Schaudt. The defensive end appeared in all 11 games last season as a reserve, leading the team with 13.5 tackles to go along with seven and a half sacks. COACH Head coach Todd Hoffner enters his fourth season at the helm of the Mavericks. Hoffner is 25-10, including tho playoff appearances at MSU. in 11- years as a head coach, Hoffner has an overall collegiate record of PRESEASON POLLS The Mavericks were picked fifth in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Preseason Football Coaches Poll.
