Practices Days & Times: (4 th )/5 th /6 th Basketball/Soccer Teams practice on Mondays & Wednesdays beginning Nov. 13th 7 th /8 th Basketball/Soccer Teams practice on Tuesdays & Thursdays beginning Nov. 14th 4th - 8th Co-ed Tennis practice on Tuesdays & Thursdays beginning Nov. 14th Practices Times: 3:15 pm - 5:00 pm Order Your Uniforms online at Parents, please try and arrange your personal appointments on days your athlete does not have practice. 2 Athletic Department Mission Statement We strive to provide athletes with the opportunity to grow mentally, physically, and emotionally through athletic participation. At Pardes Jewish Day School, we focus on our athletes to implement the fundamentals and skills necessary to execute what is taught on the field of play. Personal traits of commitment, team cooperation, leadership, and sportsmanship will be emphasized. The Athletic Department and its participants will execute its core values. 3 ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT GOALS It is our goal to provide a fun filled and challenging atmosphere that is conducive to the overall athletic experience. We will work hard to inspire athletes to become the best that they are capable of becoming through athletics. With this, we try to develop the whole student and to achieve a personal level of excellence in the areas of fitness, team commitment, discipline, and sportsmanship. Spirit, enthusiasm, and fun are also emphasized. COMMUNICATION Parents and coaches want nothing more than their students athletes to have positive experiences as they participate in interscholastic athletics. Communication is vital in making this goal a reality. Student athletes, parents, and coaches are responsible for achieving effective communication. As students become involved in athletics, they will have many rewarding experiences. It is important to understand that at times there will be frustration, disappointment, and even setbacks. During these times, player initiated discussion with the coach is recommended and encouraged. Coaches should communicate their expectations for all players. Location and times of all practices and games, team policies, and required equipment are found in the front office and athletic office. Coaches should also communicate to the player and parents of any disciplinary action resulting in the denial of a student athlete s participation and reasons for that action. There are situations that may require a conference between the athletic director, coach, and the parent. These meetings are encouraged. If a parent has a concern and would like to discuss it, he or she should call to schedule an appointment with the Athletic Director. 4TH GRADE ATHLETES Athletes that participate in Pardes Athletic Programs and are currently in the fourth grade, will be considered Junior Varsity participants. The Junior Varsity will only participate in practices and will not participate in games. This includes traveling to away games. Junior Varsity Athletes are not allowed on the sidelines during home games. All athletes will be held to the standards outlined in the Athletic Handbook. Junior Varsity Athletes will be part of a grooming process so when they enter into the 5 th grade, they will have the necessary skills and mindset for the next level of competition. Fourth Grade participants are not allowed to compete in the league. This ruling is in compliance with the Mountain Valley Athletic League (MVAL) guidelines. Fourth grade practices generally start two weeks after middle school practices have begun and end a week before playoffs begin. 4th grade will be allowed to participate in tennis matches. PLAYING TIME Playing time for all levels of play is at the discretion of the coaching staff. Sportsmanship, commitment, a positive attitude, leadership, work ethic, and being prepared for practices and games are all considered when determining playing time. The Athletic Department does not promise equal playing time, but strives to get all athletes into regular season games. Athletes who play on the 5 th /6 th grade team will not play on the 7 th /8 th grade teams, unless the Athletic Director has given consent and is in compliance with the Mountain Valley Athletic League (MVAL) guidelines.

4 SPORTSMANSHIP Athletes, spectators and coaches should exhibit good sportsmanship at all times. Spectators, including parents, please sit in the designated seating areas provided at each venue and give our coaching staff the ability to coach and instruct before and during games. If there are specific questions pertaining to your child, please address those issues with the Athletic Director and coaches directly. 1. Always cheer in a positive manner. 2. Do not talk to officials before, during, or after competition. 3. Keep all comments about officiating to yourself. We want athletes to concentrate on what is about to happen, not what has already happened. 4. Please cheer for an athlete s efforts. It is inappropriate to behave in a negative fashion toward all athletes during competition. 5. No profanity! 6. Remember that our conduct reflects upon our school! All student athletes must adhere to our six pillars of character, pursuing victory with honor. Example: Student athletes using profanity, making fun of other team members in a derogatory fashion, or being disrespectful to coaches are subject to the following. First offense: 1. Handwritten letter must be composed to opposing school, and/or particular party involved in the incident. 2. Meeting with coach and Athletic Director. 3. One game suspension. 4. Communication with parent/guardian. Second offense: 1. Dismissal from the team. PRACTICE AND GAMES In order to create effective teams, one must make a commitment to the group. It is important that all team members attend practice. Attendance will be taken during practice. All medical appointments should be planned in order to avoid conflicts. Extenuating circumstances arise, and these are understood. A school play, Bar or Bat Mitzvah practice, or academic needs, are all taken into consideration. Nevertheless, it is important that these matters are communicated to the Athletic Director. Missing practice could result in lessened playing time. Student athletes must come properly prepared for practice. Gray Pardes Practice Shirts, all black shorts, and athletic footwear are mandatory. All athletes need to bring their own filled water bottles to every practice. Please refrain from wearing jeans or cargo shorts to practice. Wear cleats for soccer and football. Games usually take place on Fridays with occasional mid-week games. Dates and times are subject to change.

5 PARENTS/GUARDIANS If you are picking up your athletes from practices or games please follow Pardes Pick Up/Transportation Protocols. Parents/Guardians please be on time. Our Coaches/Volunteers at times need to leave promptly. Athletes that have practices inside the VOSJCC will be picked up by their parent/guardian at the Pardes campus and not at the VOSJCC. ATHLETIC SEASONS Below you will find the appropriate attire and equipment needed for your athlete during the athletic seasons. Uniforms may be purchased or borrowed. Uniform forms can be found on the Pardes website. If you choose to borrow a uniform from the school please see Coach Sara Lovstrom. Supplies are limited to a first come basis. Student athletes must come properly prepared for practice. Gray Pardes Practice Shirts, black shorts and athletic footwear is mandatory. (All athletes need to bring their own filled water bottles to every practice.) You may be asked to sit out of practice. Wear cleats during Soccer and Football seasons. Please refrain from wearing jeans, cargo shorts or skate shoes to practice. Student athletes must come prepared to games. On game days it is mandatory that all athletes wear the jersey portion of their uniform to school. Athletes must be prepared with all of their athletic equipment. It is important to display unity and school spirit. 7 END OF THE YEAR SPORTS BANQUET (Sunday, April 29th) There may be people that have more talent than you, but there s no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do. Derek Jeter At the conclusion of the athletic season the Athletic Department will put on a semi-formal sports banquet. During the banquet all of the teams and student athletes will be honored for their participation. Acknowledgment will be given to the student athletes who participated in one or more sports. Individual awards will be given out for each team. Athlete of the Year: This award is given to one male and one female eighth grade athlete who demonstrates a combination of scholar, athlete and citizen. Athletes must participate in all three seasons to be eligible. Most Inspirational: This player is hard working and has a positive attitude. This player inspires coaches, teams, and other players. Leadership can also be taken into consideration for this award. Sportsmanship Award: This player demonstrates fairness, ethics, respect, and a sense of fellowship with one's competitors on and off the field. Most Valuable Player: This player is the most valuable team member in terms of ability and production. The demonstration of leadership skills is also a variable to consider with this award. The Panther Award: Given to one student in grades 5 th - 8 th, that goes over and beyond the call of duty. The athlete demonstrates zeal and pride for Pardes Athletics. Ironman Award: This is an award given to each 4 th -8 th -grade student who participates in all three athletic seasons. Panther Medal: All athletes in grades 4 th - 8 th who participate in at least one season of athletics will receive a participation medal.
