4 CAD Camp: Are you interested in designing with computers, creating with a 3-D printer, cutting wood with a laser cutter and developing essential 21st century skills! CAD camp is for you! Kids will develop CAD design skills using the program SolidWorks. Each child will be designing their own hydraulic arm and claw which they can take home at the end of the week. We will focus on creativity, imagination, and design thinking in this fun hands-on week of making. All kids are invited whether they have taken our CAD camp in the past or not. There are many new things to discover and build! Robotics Camp: Learning and creating with electronics is a must-have skill for kids today! Our Robotics camp is a great opportunity for kids engage in STEM activities using Hummingbird Robotics. During this highly interactive camp, kids will make a pinball machine with lights, motors, and servos. This is a great camp for future engineers or simply all kids who enjoy working with their hands and using their creativity to building amazing things. This will be a fun educational week whether your kid has taken our robotics camp in the past or not. Last year s mini golf course is featured on Hummingbird s webpage. Check it out to see what Robotics camp is all about! Construction Camp: Do you love working with your imagination as well as your hands to build forts? Then come spend a week with us as we build a small village together! We will spend the week learning basic construction skills in a safe and fun learning environment. Under the supervision of a foreman, kids will creatively plan and construct a small town at Grandville Christian Elementary School. This camp is modeled after Timmerdorp or hammer town, a wildly popular experience that is sweeping the Netherlands. It is amazing to see all of the plans throughout the week come together into real-life small town! The Art of Rube Goldberg: Moving, rolling, spinning, catapulting, levers, gravity, springs, pulleys, and all things that move has never been more fun. With an assortment of materials, junk, discarded objects and time you can build several simple yet sophisticated machines. Rube Goldberg is best known for a series of drawings that depicted complicated gadgets to perform simple tasks in indirect, convoluted ways, giving rise to the term Rube Goldberg Machines for any similar gadget or process. This four-day camp is a wonderful blend of science and fun. In addition, this camp serves as an inspiration for current tinkerers and future engineers. Maximum number of students 8. The Art of Rocket Making and Launching: Blast off this summer with a four-day adventure into the science of constructing and launching rockets. Involved will be study of the laws of motion, rocket principles, stability, figuring out the height of a launched rocket and more. Materials included. Maximum number of students 8. Instructor: Conrad Van Haitsma. Conrad is a 30-year veteran of teaching. He is currently the sixth grade math and science teacher at Calvin Christian Middle School. He has a passion for making things, making things work, checking out how things work and seeing if what he makes actually works. This can and does involve discoveries and experiences with success and failure. Both outcomes are rich in learning. Conrad was raised in Grandville and had
5 generous parents who allowed him to tinker with stuff, explore ideas and explode things in numerous ventures. Some of which involved small engines, rockets, mini-bikes, bow and arrows, and the like. Currently he encourages students to take risks, chances, and explore possibilities. He is looking forward to a summer venture with students who are willing to try new ideas, take risks, have fun, and make things. NOTE: Both Rube Goldberg and The Art of Rocket Making and Launching offer exciting hands on projects. Please note that although power equipment (i.e. saws, drills, etc) will be used, their use will only be by the instructors. However, students will be using hand tools. (i.e. hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches, socket-sets, etc.)
