The two parties signed a new 10-year contract in May 2009 for Nike to continue as the exclusive supplier of athletic footwear, apparel and accessories. Nike will provide the athletic department with shoes, uniforms, coaching gear, balls and other equipment. Nike also gave the University $2 million for the Chancellor s Academic Enhancement Fund to support faculty. Cunningham officially began his duties at UNC on November 14, Cunningham is the seventh director of athletics in Carolina history, following Robert A. Fetzer ( ), Chuck Erickson ( ), Homer Rice ( ), Bill Cobey ( ), John Swofford ( ) and Dick Baddour ( ). In each of his four seasons, Carolina has finished in the top 15 of the Learfield Director s Cup, including three top-10 finishes. During that same period, the number of UNC student-athletes on the ACC Academic Honor Roll has steadily increased. She has led the Tar Heels to eight appearances in the NCAA Tournament semifinals, including five in the last seven years. Her 25 NCAA Tournament wins rank fifth in NCAA history. In 2015, Carolina reached the national title game for the third time in the last seven campaigns, won the ACC regular season title and tied the school record for wins in a season. Levy is the fourth coach in women s lacrosse history to win an NCAA championship as a player (with Virginia in 1991) and as a head coach. 19 Karen Jonas PHIL BARNES ASSISTANT COACH RECRUITING COORDINATOR 12TH SEASON AT CAROLINA ASSUMPTION 98 One of the nation s most experienced assistant coaches and a keen-eyed recruiter, Phil Barnes has been a key part of Carolina s women s lacrosse success since In November 2012, the IWLCA named Barnes its assistant coach of the year. On the field, Barnes works with the Tar Heel defense and goalkeepers, while also heading up the program s recruiting efforts. Barnes defensive tutelage has paid off for the Tar Heels. In 2009, Logan Ripley earned National Goalkeeper of the Year honors and Amber Falcone was named the National Defender of the Year. Jenn Russell was named National Defender of the Year in Falcone, Russell and fellow former Tar Heel defender all won gold with the U.S. World Cup team in Barnes is a former head coach at Holy Cross and the University of Massachusetts who also has coached prep lacrosse. He was the head coach at UMass for three seasons ( ), capturing the Atlantic 10 regular-season and tournament championships and leading the nation in scoring defense in Barnes was an assistant coach at UMass during the 1998 and 99 seasons prior to taking over as head coach. WOMEN S LACROSSE STAFF KATRINA DOWD FIRST ASSISTANT COACH FOURTH SEASON AT CAROLINA NORTHWESTERN 10 Katrina Dowd, who set a U.S. record for goals in a World Cup tournament with 26 in 2013 and ranks among the best players in women s lacrosse history, joined Jenny Levy s program in the summer of 2012 after a season as an assistant at Syracuse. Her duties include recruiting and coaching the offense and draws. Dowd is one of the top offensive players in international lacrosse history. In 2013, she scored a World Cup-record 26 goals to lead the U.S. to a gold medal, earning All-World honors. Lacrosse Magazine named her its Best Women s Player for She was a member of the U.S. national team from As a collegian, Dowd helped lead Northwestern to three consecutive national championships from A native of Yorktown Heights, N.Y., Dowd was a two-time, first-team All-America at Northwestern (2009, 2010). She led the 09 Wildcats to their fifth consecutive NCAA title, scoring a team-high 75 goals and earning NCAA Tournament MVP Award honors. In her career, Dowd compiled 209 goals and 58 assists in 88 games. Dowd finished her career as the all-time NCAA Tournament leader in goals (45).
