3 Coach Washington s Wrap Hello Torns fans, I just wanted to take a minute to thank everyone for your tremendous support of our team this year. We hope you know how much you are appreciated and how important you have been to our success during this 2018 season. It has been an amazing and exciting journey, and we know you were with us every step of the way. Thankyou to everyone who has cheered us on at Elphin Sports Stadium and stuck by us while we built this program into a finals contender, even though it was a slow start our season. Our club feels privileged to be a part of this community with you and we are honored to represent Launceston. And it s because of you, we have the best home court environment in the entire Women s SEABL competition! You are the envy of every other club that we compete against each week. I also want you to know how much we appreciate your phenomenal support tonight as we have a SOLD OUT crowd taking on the Nunawading Spectres in the Preliminary Final. Both clubs have worked very hard this season earning a top four spot out and now meet for a chance to play in the Championship game.(#3 Spectres & #4 Tornadoes). Vanessa Panousis #1 and Marena Whittle #32 have been leading scorers for the Spectres all season. Whittle and Panousis are looking to have a big night which will be a great match up for us. As far as our own Tornadoes, SEABL Women s MVP Lauren Nicholson and sharp shooter Ally Wilson lead the Torns in a huge upset win against the undefeated Bendigo Braves last week. Now after the week off, we are well rested and looking to carry that momentum into tonight s sell-out game! The winner of tonight s game will go to the Championship Game next week against either Kilsyth or Bendigo. Go Torns! Coach Derrick Washington. THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR 2018 SPONSORS AND MEMBERS FOR ALL OF YOUR SUPPORT! Interact with #tornadowarning

6 First Elimination Final Preview Kilsyth Sports Centre, 7.00pm Saturday, August 11 V Kilsyth Cobras (16-5) PREVIOUS MEETINGS THIS YEAR Round 9: Bendigo 87 def. Kilsyth Kilsyth Sports Centre Bendigo Lady Braves (21-1) LEADING STATS Points Blicavs 16.4 Rebounds Beadle 8.0 Assists Parsons 3.1 LEADING STATS Points Payne 22.8 Rebounds Payne 9.4 Assists Wilson 12.0 KILSYTH FORM Kilsyth defeated local rivals Nunawading in the week one s qualifying final to earn the rest last weekend, but will be without Steph Blicavs for the all-important match this week due to Australian Opals World Cup Selection camp. BENDIGO FORM Bendigo went undefeated during the regular season, but lost to Launceston in the Qualifying Final, forcing them to win on the road in this week s semi-final to return to the SEABL Championship game contention. KILSYTH X-FACTOR Angela Beadle, the 2017 League MVP has not been the dominating force this year, but she is a player that needs to be at her best this week against the Braves. After a slow start to the season Angela has averaged 15.8 points per game over her last six games. But it is her defensive game that will impact the Cobras chances the most as she will need to limit the Braves frontcourt of Gabe Richards and Nadeen Payne. KILSYTH X-FACTOR Ashleigh Karatiana showed last week how she can dominate a game if left open by the opposition team. Karatiana scored her highest points tally for the year with 27 points against Geelong. Her offensive talents will need to be contained by the Cobras, otherwise Karatiana will dominate and once again guide the Braves to victory. OVERALL The loss of talented scorer Steph Blicavs for this weeks contest will hurt the Cobras, but coach Sam Woosnam has the luxury of having multiple players with the ability to step up and cover the scoring load. Youngsters Chelsea D Angelo and Taylor Lee will need to be at their best against the league s best point guard in Kelly Wilson, who is in scintillating form. Her efforts will need to be contained if the Cobras are to secure the win. Bendigo have a wealth of experience in their line-up and wealth of talent that will be hard to beat.
7 Second Elimination Final Preview Elphin Sports Centre, 6.30pm Saturday, August 11 V Launceston Tornadoes (14-7) PREVIOUS MEETINGS THIS YEAR Round 9: Nunawading 79 def. Launceston Nunawading Stadium Nunawading Spectres (14-8) LEADING STATS Points Nicholson 25.4 Rebounds Collins 9.0 Assists Wilson 5.4 LEADING STATS Points Whittle 18.0 Rebounds Chilcott 6.5 Assists Chilcott 2.4 TORNADOES FORM Finished the regular season with three consecutive victories to steal fourth place on the ladder and then surprised the league by beating undefeated ladder leaders Bendigo in the first week of finals. Since adding import Courtney Williams mid-season, the Tornadoes have recorded a 6-2 record. TORNADOES X-FACTOR Lauren Nicholson, as the league leading scorer and Most Valuable Player, is critical in this do or die game. The success of Tornadoes this year has largely been in part to the consistently high standard of play Nicholson has produced each week. If her efforts are contained by the Spectres this week, the Tornadoes Championship hopes will be diminished quickly. GO TORNS!! OVERALL NUNAWADING FORM Nunawading have been in the top three for the entire season, opening their 2018 campaign with a 5-2 record, but had a disappointing end to the regular season dropping four of their last five games. NUNAWADING X-FACTOR Izzy Chilcott produced a Player of the Week performance in the Spectres round nine victory over Launceston with 23 points shooting at 73%, five rebounds and two assists. Chilcott will need to produce another quality offensive performance this week but will likely need to defend Tornadoes sharp shooter Ally Wilson at stages during the game. This will be a tough task, but Chilcott is fully capable of completing efficiently. Launceston have surprised a lot of people this season, and have done so with Australian Opal Lauren Mansfield only playing eight games this season. Mansfield will be out of this weekends game due to Australian Opals Camp, but the Tornadoes have showed they can win without her numerous times this season already. Ellie Collins has had a standout season and has scored 25+ points on four occasions and could be the key player that guides Launceston to the win. Nunawading forward Marena Whittle will have other ideas as she is playing exceptional basketball and will be determined to guide her team to their first Championship game in nearly 10 years.
8 Nicholson and Wilson take out 2018 SEABL MVP Awards Following the end of the regular season on Saturday night, the 2018 SEABL Awards were held on the rooftop of Emerson s Hotel in Prahran. Talented youngster Tom Wilson was awarded the Most Valuable Player in his second year at Melbourne Tigers. A voting system is used by referees and coaches throughout the season at the end of each game with the votes tallied at the end of the regular season to find a winner. Tom received 110 votes and held onto the award despite missing the last game of the regular season due to a tour of China with the Sydney Kings. Having earned two player of the week s in round 6 and 7, at the end of the season Wilson finished third in the league for averaged points at Wilson maintained a 43.5% shooting percentage from the field and a total of 67 three-pointers throughout the season. For the women, Lauren Nicholson earned the MVP award also in her second season with the Launceston Tornadoes. Finishing as the league leader with an average 25 points per game, Nicholson earned herself 122 votes from the referees and coaches. Nicholson ended the season with a 56.2% shooting percentage and an average of 8.8 rebounds per game. Nicholson showed consistency all year, with seven team of the week appearances and one player of the week award in round two. The Coach of the Year was awarded to David Biwer of Nunawading Spectres and Bendigo Lady Braves Megan Moody. A Legend of the game as a former player and current coach, Biwer has been juggling SEABL duties on top of being the Australian head coach for the 2018 FIBA 3 3 Asia Cup. Moody s first year coaching has been nothing short of successful with her team s undefeated run, a feat that hasn t been achieved since Coaches and captains collective votes for athletes under the age of 21 resulted in Tom Wilson s second consecutive win for Australian Youth Player of the Year. 118 free throws contributed to Wilson s 473 total match points, showing his repeat win for the award is no less impressive than his first in Australian Opal Ezi Magbegor of Diamond Valley Eagles took the Womens Youth Player award. With her previous national career history, her debut with the Opals at the Commonwealth Games and finishing 5th in the SEABL league at 9.9 for rebounds, Magbegor s career is looking to continue in a strong manner. All-SEABL First and Second Teams were named to finish off the awards. Coaches and captains selected five players for
