1 NCAA Men s Basketball Officiating Exam 1. A-1 is bleeding from a blow to the head and unable to attempt his free throws. 2 5. With three-tenths of a second remaining in the game and Team B leading 50-49, Team A is awarded a throw-in under their basket. A-2 lobs a pass in front of the basket and A-3 taps the ball toward his basket. The ball enters the basket as the horn sounds indicating time has expired. RULING: (a) Disallow the goal, since the ball needed to pass through the basket before the horn sounded (b) Score the goal; Team A wins (c) Disallow the goal, since a tap is illegal with three-tenths of a second or less Reference: As A-1 drives to the basket, B-2, a secondary defender, takes a position under the basket. 5 19. Following a violation by Team B and before the ball is at the disposal of Team A for the throw-in, A-1 flagrantly fouls B-1. The foul is not observed by the officials. Team A completes the throw-in and the clock is started. The official now recognizes a foul may have been committed and uses the monitor to review the action. When it is determined a flagrant foul was committed, the officials are permitted: (a) To correct the missed flagrant foul before the second live ball following a successful goal and the clock is running and penalize with a flagrant personal foul (b) To correct the missed flagrant during the next dead ball and penalize with a flagrant personal foul (c) To correct the missed flagrant foul during the next dead ball and penalize with a flagrant technical foul (d) To correct the missed flagrant foul before the second live ball after a successful goal and the clock is running and penalize with a flagrant technical foul Reference: a1 20. 8 33. A-1 releases the ball on a try for goal near the expiration of time. The ball enters the basket and the official counts the goal. The replay showed 4 tenths of a second on the game clock when the ball passed through the net. As A-1 is advancing the ball up court, B-2 commits a common foul on A-2. Team A is in the bonus. The official uses the monitor to review the play. RULING: (a) The flagrant personal foul may not be penalized because statute of limitations has expired (b) The free throws will be attempted in the order of occurrence and Team B awarded the ball where the stoppage occurred (c) After all the free throws have been attempted, Team A will be awarded the ball at the point nearest to where the flagrant personal foul occurred Reference: b
