Jets fire special teams coordinator April, 2 assistants (Dennis Waszak) Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) Todd Bowles is already making big changes for the New York Jets. The team announced Wednesday that the coach fired special teams coordinator Bobby April and assistant coaches Steve Hagen and Ron Heller after the Jets missed the playoffs after a 10-6 season. Bowles made the moves following season-ending meetings with his coaching staff after saying Monday in his final news conference that he expected all of his assistants to return. "I decided that changes were necessary in these areas," Bowles said in a statement issued by the team. "I appreciate their contributions this past season and wish them success in the future." The Jets' special teams unit struggled all season under April, who was in his first year with the Jets and 24th in the NFL as a special teams coach. New York gave up two touchdowns on punt returns, another on a blocked punt and one more on a fumbled kickoff. There was a revolving door at kick returner because of injuries, with Chris Owusu, Zac Stacy, Devin Smith, Bilal Powell and Antonio Cromartie working at the spot. Punter Ryan Quigley was inconsistent in his third season with the Jets, finishing near the bottom of the league with a 36.5 net average and 43.8 gross average. New York also lost kicker Nick Folk midway through the season with a quadriceps injury, leading to the Jets signing Randy Bullock, who missed three field goals and an extra point. With April gone, the Jets will be on their fifth special teams coordinator in as many seasons. Mike Westhoff retired following the 2012 season and Ben Kotwica was promoted to replace him. Kotwica left after the 2013 season to take the same role in Washington. Thomas McGaughey was the special teams coordinator last season. Hagen and Heller were the lone holdovers from Rex Ryan's staff. Hagen was an assistant special teams coach after previously serving as a tight ends coach, while Heller was an assistant offensive line coach. Jets' Wilkerson says he's having surgery on broken leg (Dennis Waszak) Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) New York Jets defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson says he is having surgery Wednesday to repair his broken right leg. Wilkerson, selected to his first Pro Bowl this season, broke his fibula in the third quarter of the Jets' loss at Buffalo last Sunday. He writes on Twitter that he "didn't expect the season to end so soon and start the new year with an injury but it's part of the game." Wilkerson had a career-high 12 sacks in his fifth NFL season as a key part of Todd Bowles' defense. He's scheduled to be a free agent this offseason. The 26-year-old defensive end has been looking for a long- 2 P a g e

term extension from the Jets, who could use the franchise tag on him rather than let him hit the freeagent market. NEWSDAY Jets fire special-teams coordinator Bobby April (Kimberley A. Martin) Newsday Bobby April s time with the Jets is over after only one season. The special-teams coordinator was fired Wednesday after a poor first year with the organization. Although the timing of April s dismissal so soon after the season is surprising, the Jets decided they had no choice but to part ways. Assistant special-teams coach Steve Hagen and assistant offensive line coach Ron Heller also were fired. After having our season-ending meetings with the staff, I decided that changes were necessary in these areas, coach Todd Bowles said on the team s website. I appreciate their contributions this past season and wish them success in the future. Brandon Marshall proves to be a man of character for Jets (Kimberley A. Martin) Newsday Brandon Marshall has grown up, it seems. He s been a positive force in the Jets locker room and a source of strength in their passing game. And yet, the assumptions about his character and the labels about his personality still irritate him. He s moved on from his time in Denver, Miami and Chicago, but the playmaking receiver can t escape how he s still perceived. I don t believe I ll ever get past that, Marshall said this week, and that s something I have to live with. His three seasons with the Bears seem to have scarred him the most. The friction between him and quarterback Jay Cutler became public fodder and his trade from Chicago to the Jets in March for a fifthround pick, no less soured his positive experiences in the city. I was kind of shell-shocked a little bit how things happened last year in Chicago, mainly because of the things that I was trying to build in the community, and also breaking that perception and that stigma, he said. That was the first place that I felt like was home. And that experience also made his transition to the Jets, his fourth team in 10 seasons, even more difficult at first. 3 P a g e

I came into this situation not wanting to build relationships, not wanting to get attached to anything because I had a bitter taste in my mouth, as far as how things happened in Chicago, said Marshall, 31. When I got in here, immediately that changed.... This is the best locker room, the best team I ve ever been on, as far as from a management standpoint. The bond between him and Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick was evident from the start, following Fitzpatrick s unexpected promotion to starter. The pair had never reached the playoffs before joining forces, and their dream of a postseason run was extinguished in Buffalo after a loss on Sunday. Nevertheless, Marshall shined during a record-setting first year with the Jets. He was selected to the Pro Bowl for the sixth time, caught a career-high 14 touchdowns and had 1,502 receiving yards (just six yards shy of his career high). Though he admittedly was a problem and a headache elsewhere, the Jets coaching staff had no reservations about trading for him, and he proved them right. The second year in Miami is when I really got it, said the receiver, who played for the Dolphins in 2010 and That s when the transformation started in my life. Now, I m not perfect. I think that sometimes we confuse personality and character. That s disappointing, because you don t have to like me or the way I live my life or how I may talk or where I come from. But character is a big thing. And that s all you have at the end of the day. I feel that the first couple years of my career, I did a great job of ruining that. I feel like when I got to Miami, I built on that a little more. And then the second year, I totally changed my life, changed my approach. So when things happen... whether it s something on Twitter or whatever, people automatically assume because of my reputation. I don t think I ll ever change perceptions. Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson has surgery on broken leg (Kimberley A. Martin) Newsday Muhammad Wilkerson announced he underwent surgery on his broken leg Wednesday. The Jets defensive end fractured his right fibula in Sunday s loss to the Bills that knocked the Jets from playoff contention. Well, I didn t expect the season to end so soon and start the new year with an injury but it s part of the game, tweeted Wilkerson, who recorded a career- and team-high 12 sacks. Everybody have a great hump day while I have my surgery today thanks for all the prayers. Wilkerson, a New Jersey native and a 2011 first-round pick of the Jets, faces a months-long recovery as well as his uncertain future with the organization. After negotiations on a contract extension stalled last offseason, the Jets and Wilkerson s camp agreed to put discussions on hold until after the 2015 season. The Jets could place the franchise tag on him, thereby keeping Wilkerson under their control in 2016, or they could decide to trade him. 4 P a g e

During a WFAN interview Tuesday, coach Todd Bowles expressed confidence that Wilkerson will be as good as new after surgery. Mo s a hard worker, he said, and he s going to heal properly and he ll be fine. ESPN NEW YORK Jets' special teams were a joke; Todd Bowles wasn't laughing (Rich Cimini) ESPN New York The New York Jets announced Wednesday night that three assistants won't return in special teams coordinator Bobby April, assistant special teams coach Steve Hagen and assistant offensive-line coach Ron Heller. A few takeaways: 1. If you're surprised by April's firing, you must have missed the season. The special teams were a mess throughout the year, surrendering four touchdowns -- two punt returns, a blocked punt in the end zone and a fumbled kickoff return that was returned for a score. That stinks. The Jets finished in the bottom-5 in most of the major statistical categories, including 30th in ESPN's StEPA (total expected added points by special teams). In case you're wondering, they were minus 27.7 points. 2. You wouldn't expect a 10-6 team to dump a coordinator, but it shows that Todd Bowles won't tolerate a subpar performance. April is a good man and well-respected around the league; he's been coaching special teams for nearly a quarter-century. Some head coaches would've given a mulligan, calling the season an aberration. Not Bowles. This sends a not-so-subtle message at the outset of the offseason. After having our season-ending meetings with the staff, I decided that changes were necessary in these areas," said Bowles, who indicated Monday he wasn't planning any staff changes. 3. April didn't have a great year, but he didn't get any favors from general manager Mike Maccagnan, who compiled a roster that had no proven kickoff returners and a mediocre punt returner (Jeremy Kerley). The units also lacked youth and athleticism, although that can't be blamed on Maccagnan. The recent drafts under the previous regime failed to yield quality depth players that could help on special teams. 4. A replacement for April? Hard to say, but know this: Last year, Bowles made a run at Atlanta Falcons coordinator Keith Armstrong, a former college teammate, but was blocked by the Falcons. Armstrong's current contractual status is unclear. 5. The Jets will have their fifth special teams coach in five years. Remember when they used to be, like, good? 6. No surprise by Hagen and Heller, the only holdovers from Rex Ryan's staff. Brandon Marshall: Johnny Manziel 'ruining a very special opportunity' (Rich Cimini) ESPN New York P a g e

New York Jets wide receiver Brandon Marshall, whose NFL career was nearly derailed years ago by personal problems, chided Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel and advised him to seek help for his issues. "Johnny, Johnny, Johnny," Marshall said during a segment that aired Tuesday night on Showtime's "Inside the NFL." "This is a serious topic. Well, first, you've got to forget about football, sir. You need to go get your life together. And to be quite frank, I don't think you get it. You don't understand. You're ruining a very, very special opportunity. It's an honor to be in the NFL." Marshall continued, "There is a thing out there called divine mentorship, where you can learn from others' mistakes. He has the opportunity to really sit back and reflect on his situation, look at others, and learn from it and be better." "You've got to forget about football, sir. You need to go get your life together," Jets wide receiver Brandon Marshall said of Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel. Peter G. Aiken/Getty Images Marshall has been a regular on the show for the last two years. Manziel's problems have been well-documented. Most recently, he failed to show up for mandatory treatment Sunday morning as part of the NFL's concussion protocol. On Tuesday, his marketing deal with LeBron James' agency came to an end. Manziel, the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner and No. 22 draft pick in 2014, spent 10 weeks in a rehab facility last offseason for an undisclosed issue. Marshall endured his share of problems early in his career, including multiple domestic-violence arrests. He was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and has become a spokesman for mental-health awareness. Demario Davis, Antonio Cromartie among Jets who came up short (Rich Cimini) ESPN New York As part of our season-ending coverage of the New York Jets, we'll look at five players who exceeded expectations and five who didn't. Let's start with the latter: Players who fell short of expectations Demario Davis, linebacker: Before the season, Davis spoke excitedly of his potential in Todd Bowles' onegap scheme. He felt there would be more opportunities to use his speed as a sideline-to-sideline defender. It didn't work out that way. He struggled at times in pass coverage and he led the team with 16 missed tackles, according to Pro Football Focus. Davis, an every-down player in 2013 and 2014, was relegated to a rotation over the final six games. Antonio Cromartie, cornerback: Cromartie actually played well over the final month, but it's hard to forget about his midseason slump. All told, he was responsible for seven of the team's 18 touchdown passes allowed, per PFF. It wasn't all bad -- he led the team in pass breakups -- but more was expected of Cromartie, especially with his background in Bowles' defense. 6 P a g e

Jeremy Kerley, wide receiver: He never found a niche in Chan Gailey's offense, finishing with career lows for receptions (16) and yards (152). The only reason Kerley was active on game day was because he's the only punt returner on the roster. Jeff Cumberland, tight end: In some ways, Cumberland's season mirrored that of Kerley -- an established veteran who failed to gain the trust of the new coaching staff. Cumberland, who averaged 26 catches over the previous three seasons, finished with only five receptions. By late in the season, he had lost the starting job to Kellen Davis. Breno Giacomini, right tackle: Giacomini is a popular player in the locker room because he's a team-first guy who brings a nastiness to the field, but he was one of the lowest-rated tackles in the league, according to PFF. He allowed four sacks, which isn't terrible, but he was responsible for 44 quarterback hits -- second most in the NFL. Jets DE Mo Wilkerson begins offseason with leg surgery (Rich Cimini) ESPN New York Pro Bowl defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson will begin his offseason in the operating room. The New York Jets' star will have surgery Wednesday to repair a fractured right fibula (lower leg), he announced on Twitter. Neither Wilkerson nor the Jets have released a timetable for his recovery, but experts say it could take anywhere from three to six months before he's 100 percent. It will be closer to the six-month time frame if there's ligament damage in his ankle. In either case, Wilkerson should be ready for training camp in July. First, the Jets must address his contract situation. The five-year veteran is a pending free agent and would be one of the most coveted players on the open market, but he's not expected to make it there. The Jets almost certainly will use the franchise tag if they can't sign him to a long-term contract. Wilkerson's season ended in the third quarter of the final game, when his right leg was bent awkwardly in a pile-up. He finished the year with a team-high 12 sacks, a career high. On Wednesday, Wilkerson tweeted a message to his followers: Addressing the Jets' salary cap, free-agency issues as offseason begins (Rich Cimini) 7 P a g e

ESPN New York The New York Jets' braintrust already is hunkered down in meetings, plotting an off-season plan. It'll be less hectic than last year for general manager Mike Maccagnan, who was new on the job, but 2016 will present its own unique set of challenges. Here's a primer on where the Jets' stand in terms of the salary cap and free agency: How much cap space will they have? The 2016 cap reportedly will fall somewhere between $150 million and $153.4 million. Right now, the Jets have $134.8 million committed to the cap, according to NFLPA records. The number will be adjusted based on the amount of unused cap space carried over from The Jets don't have much of a carryover -- perhaps close to $3 million. Do the quick math, and you'll see the Jets figure to have a minimum of $18 million in cap room. It's certainly a far cry from a year ago, when they had more than $50 million at the start of free agency. Which players have the biggest 2016 cap hits? The top 10: Darrelle Revis ($17 million), D'Brickashaw Ferguson ($14.1 million), Brandon Marshall ($9.5 million), Nick Mangold ($8.6 million), Eric Decker ($8 million), Antonio Cromartie ($8 million), Buster Skrine ($7.75 million), David Harris ($7.5 million), Marcus Gilchrist ($5.6 million), James Carpenter ($5.6 million). Here's a scary thought: Six of the 10 will be 31 or older. How can they create more cap room? The Jets don't have a lot of bloated contracts, so they can't magically create a ton of room by dumping a few players. They can loosen things up a bit by cutting Cromartie ($8 million savings), Jeremy Kerley ($1.3 million) and Jeff Cumberland ($1.9 million). They also have to address Ferguson's contract. His $14.1 million cap charge is a league-high for offensive linemen in Obviously, that's prohibitive. Look for the Jets to do something before the start of the league year, when a $1 million roster bonus is payable to Ferguson. If they save, say, $4 million by restructuring Ferguson, now you're talking about $33 million in cap room if the aforementioned players are released. It sounds like a lot of dough, but it's really not. Why not? Keep reading. Which free agents are deserving of big bucks? The Jets have three players who will command significant contracts -- Ryan Fitzpatrick, Muhammad Wilkerson and Damon Harrison. His poor finish notwithstanding, Fitzpatrick had a record-setting season and could land a new deal that averages at least $10 million annually. They won't mortgage the future for Fitzpatrick, 33, but veteran starting quarterbacks don't come cheaply. Wilkerson could end up with the franchise tag, which projects at $16 million. Harrison considers himself the best nose tackle in the NFL, so you have to assume he wants to be paid like it. That means at least $4.5 million a year. As you can see, the money goes quickly. It will be difficult to re-sign Harrison, especially if he hits the open market. Who are the Jets' unrestricted free agents? Aside from Fitzpatrick, Wilkerson and Harrison, their free agents are Chris Ivory, Bilal Powell, Stevan Ridley, Chris Owusu, Kellen Davis, Ben Ijalana and Willie Colon on offense. On defense, we're talking about Leger Douzable, Stephen Bowen, Calvin Pace, Demario Davis, Jamari Lattimore, Erin Henderson, Darrin 8 P a g e

Walls, Antonio Allen and Jaiquawn Jarrett. Kicker Randy Bullock also will be a free agent. The restricted free agents are Kenbrell Thompkins, Zach Sudfeld and Ryan Quigley. Who stays and who goes? Fitzpatrick and Wilkerson will be back. It sounds like Todd Bowles really wants to keep Harrison, but it'll be tough. They'll try to re-sign Ivory and Powell, but don't be surprised if both leave. Hey, you can't keep everybody. The Jets could be looking at a total overhaul at running back. Demario Davis isn't likely to return; he lost playing time to Henderson, who is worth re-signing on a one-year deal. None of the other free agents is a must have, although players such as Douzable, Walls and Allen can be depth players for the minimum salary. Does Maccagnan have a blockbuster move up his sleeve? Aside from keeping his own big names, it'll be tough to made a splashy move because of the cap situation. That, coupled with the fact they have only six draft picks, means they will have limited resources. That's problematic because this team, despite winning 10 games, needs an infusion of young talent. One bargaining chip could be Sheldon Richardson, but his trade value is hurt because of the uncertainty surrounding a possible suspension. They could try a tag-and-trade with Wilkerson, but those are rare and his broken leg complicates the issue. What are their positional needs? They need speed at running back, an edge pass rusher, at least one new starter on the right side of the offensive line and a kick returner who actually scares opponents. NEW YORK POST After blowing playoff shot, Jets, Todd Bowles fire some coaches (Brian Costello) New York Post Three days after the Jets failed to make the playoffs, head coach Todd Bowles made some changes. He fired special teams coordinator Bobby April, who spent just one season with the Jets, along with assistant special teams coach Steve Hagen and assistant offensive line coach Ron Heller, who were the only two holdovers from Rex Ryan s staff. The Jets special teams were abysmal this season. They gave up two punt returns for touchdowns, had a punt blocked for a touchdown and fumbled a kickoff that was returned for a touchdown. They did not score any points. The coverage units were poor and the return game was practically nonexistent. Punter Ryan Quigley had a maddeningly inconsistent season, including a 21-yard punt that set up a score in Sunday s season-ending loss to the Bills. Bowles said Monday he did not anticipate any staff changes, but either changed his mind or did not want to admit he was thinking of changes. After having our season-ending meetings with the staff, I decided that changes were necessary in these areas, Bowles said in a statement. I appreciate their contributions this past season and wish them success in the future. 9 P a g e

April is the fourth special teams coordinator the Jets have had in four years. Mike Westhoff spent 12 years in the role before retiring at the end of the 2012 season. Ben Kotwica did the job for one year before Thomas McGaughey and then April. The Jets have not had a return for a touchdown on a kick or punt since Bowles was asked Monday if he was disappointed in the special teams performance this year. At times. I mean, the returns, yes, he said. We have to make tackles here and there. Sometimes, we have to make plays. We didn t make enough plays sometimes with the defense, sometimes with the offense, sometimes with the special teams. April has been an NFL special teams coach for 24 seasons. Hagen and Heller both joined the Jets coaching staff in Hagen coached tight ends under Ryan and then moved to assistant special teams coach last season under Bowles. Muhammad Wilkerson has surgery to fix broken right leg (Brian Costello) New York Post Defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson had surgery Wednesday to repair a broken bone in his right leg. Wilkerson suffered the injury in Sunday s loss to the Bills, breaking his fibula. Wilkerson is a pending free agent, but the Jets are expected to place the franchise tag on him. Wilkerson announced he was having the surgery on Twitter. Well I didn t expect the season to end so soon and start the new year with a injury but it s part of the game, Wilkerson tweeted. Everybody have a great hump day while I have my surgery today thanks for all the prayers. NJ ADVANCE MEDIA Where did things go wrong with Jeremy Kerley and the Jets? (Darryl Slater) NJ Advance Media January 7, ml#incart_river_mobileshort_index Wide receiver Jeremy Kerley stood in front of his locker Monday morning, a day after the Jets' season ended in Buffalo, answering questions about his future as he's had to do for much of this season. Once a major part of the Jets' offense, Kerley barely played this season under new head coach Todd Bowles and offensive coordinator Chan Gailey. Now, it appears unlikely that Kerley will be back next season. His contract has three years remaining ( ) and carries a $3.1 million salary cap figure for The Jets aren't committed that kind of money to a receiver who doesn't play. Kerley's dead money cap figure, if he is cut or traded, is $1.8 million. So what the heck happened with Kerley? 10 P a g e

The short answer: Other players (understandably) took his roles in the offense. The Jets opted for secondyear pro Quincy Enunwa, a bigger-bodied receiver who can block better than Kerley, as their No. 3 receiver. And Gailey decided to play Eric Decker more often in the slot, a spot on the field previously occupied by Kerley. How steep was the decline in Kerley's usage? Well, here were his numbers from : 2012: 95 targets, 56 catches, 827 yards 2013: 72 targets, 43 catches, 523 yards (in 12 games) 2014: 75 targets, 38 catches, 409 yards In 2015, Kerley had 26 targets, 16 catches, and 152 yards. Those numbers probably would've been even lower if Enunwa hadn't served a four-game domestic violence suspension. In those four games, Kerley had 15 targets, 10 catches, and 119 yards. Besides those four games, Kerley registered offensive numbers in just one other game, against the Eagles: 11 targets, six catches, and 33 yards. In October of 2014, Kerley signed a four-year contract extension with the Jets. Now, it looks like the Jets will cut him after just one year of that extension. A fifth-round draft pick by the Jets in 2011, Kerley ranked first, first, and tied for second on the team in catches from But he was really always just a slot receiver, at his core. Which is fine. Except that Gailey decided to play somebody else, Decker, in the slot this season. In 2012, Kerley ran 71.2 percent of his routes from the slot, according to Pro Football Focus. In 2013 and 2014, Kerley's slot route percentages were 77.2 and Decker this season wound up running 68.1 percent of his routes from the slot, effectively taking Kerley's role in the offense. Decker is a better receiver than Kerley, so it made sense for Gailey to align Decker in the slot, where he could exploit coverage mismatches with safeties and linebackers. This sort of slot usage was somewhat new for Decker, though not altogether foreign. From in Denver, Decker ran 67.4, 20.2, and 32.2 percent of his routes from the slot. With the Jets in 2014, Decker was their No. 1 receiver, so he most often aligned outside. He ran just 15.1 percent of his routes from the slot. The arrival of Brandon Marshall this season enabled the Jets to play their best (and biggest-bodied) wide receiver outside, while sliding Decker into the slot. Between this, and the coaches' admiration for Enunwa's dual skills as a pass catcher and blocker, Kerley proved too one-dimensional, as a smaller, quick receiver. Kerley said that "of course" he wants to return to the Jets next season, but he is trying to not ponder his future. "When get to thinking about all that, man, honestly, it gives me a headache," he said. "So I ain't worried about it. I think, honestly, [this season] really tested a lot about my character. I think I handled it pretty good. I've just got to get better, and keep doing what I'm doing, and everything will take care of itself." Does he think he had a fair chance to demonstrate his skills? 11 P a g e

"I don't know if anybody is given a fair opportunity in this league," he said. "I'm happy that a lot of guys who didn't get a chance to prove themselves last year, they got a chance to do some good things. Quincy, I'm happy for him. That's my guy." Kerley, taking the high road, appreciates the opportunity the Jets gave him, by drafting him. "It was everything," he said. "They gave me my opportunity, to showcase what I had. But as far as everything else, man, that speaks for itself. I laid my season out, I laid everything out, everything I had. Every time I went out on the field, I gave everything I had. So that speaks for itself." Kerley said in late November that he had indeed thought about wanting a trade, so he could go somewhere else and get a better shot at playing more. Of course, it's unlikely another team would take on his contract at this point, since he has cap figures of $3.6 million and $4.1 million in 2016 and So it looks like Kerley will have to start fresh elsewhere after being released. Jets fire special teams coordinator Bobby April, two other assistants (Dom Consentino) NJ Advance Media cart_river_mobileshort_index So much for Todd Bowles' declaration that the Jets' entire coaching staff would return in The Jets on Wednesday announced that three assistants special teams coordinator Bobby April, assistant special teams coach Steve Hagen, and assistant offensive line coach Ron Heller would not be back. April coached one season with the Jets. Hagen and Heller were the last two holdovers from previous head coach Rex Ryan's staff. The Jets' special teams were kind of a mess in They gave up four touchdowns two on punt returns, one on a blocked punt, and one on a fumbled kickoff. One of those punt returns happened in a loss to the Eagles. And the fumbled kickoff occurred in a loss to the Bills back in Week 10. The Jets finished 10-6 and missed the playoffs for a fifth straight year because of a tiebreaker. Punter Ryan Quigley was also inconsistent. Quigley shanked a punt that led to a touchdown in Sunday's season-ending loss at the Bills which cost the Jets a playoff spot and kicker Randy Bullock also missed a field goal. Football Outsiders ranked the Jets' special teams 25th in DVOA. They were 16th in The Jets will now enter 2016 with their fifth special teams coordinator in as many seasons. Monday, in his final press conference of the season, Bowles, the Jets' head coach, answered "Yes" when asked point-blank if he expected all of his assistants to be back next year. Two days later, three of those assistants were out the door. April was in his 24th season as an NFL assistant. Hagen was in his third year with the Jets and fifth overall. And Heller was in his third season with the Jets and fifth as an NFL assistant. 12 P a g e

NFLPA decertifies agent for Jets' Antonio Cromartie, Sheldon Richardson, Eagles' Malcolm Jenkins (Dom Cosentino) NJ Advanced Media ncart_river_index The NFL Players Association on Wednesday announced that its Committee on Agent Regulations and Discipline (CARD) voted unanimously to discipline agent Ben Dogra for undisclosed violations. Dogra has been hit with a massive penalty: A fine of$200,000 and the revocation of his certification as an NFLPA contract advisor. He also cannot re-apply for certification for three years. Dogra has one of the NFL's most high-profile client list. Players he represent include cornerback Antonio Cromartie and defensive end Sheldon Richardson of the Jets; safety Malcolm Jenkins and linebacker DeMeco Ryans of the Eagles; Vikings running back Adrian Peterson; and Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman. It is not clear who would assume representation of Dogra's clients. Dogra had been employed at Relativity Sports, but the agency no longer lists his name on their website. Dogra previously worked at the superagency CAA, but he had been fired in November Dogra has the right to appeal his discipline with an independent arbitrator. If he chooses to appeal, any discipline would be placed on hold pending the outcome of that appeal. Analyzing how Jets' Darrelle Revis (beaten by DeAndre Hopkins, Sammy Watkins) played in 2015 (Darryl Slater) NJ Advance Media ml#incart_river_index Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis ended his season on a sour note in Sunday's loss at the Bills, which eliminated the Jets from the playoffs. But how did Revis play overall in 2015, his first year back with the Jets after a two-year absence? Is he, at age 30, still one of the NFL's best corners? He certainly played like it at times in He finished with five interceptions, the second-most of his career. According to Pro Football Focus, just 46.5 percent of the balls thrown his way were completed 40 catches on 86 targets. No corner in the NFL this season had a lower catch percentage allowed. Yet Revis did have two notable sluggish games something Jets coach Todd Bowles said can happen to even the best corners. "He's a good corner," Bowles said, adding that he believes Revis remains elite. "That doesn't mean that good corners don't get beat or have bad games. They have some bad games. I still think the same [of him] that I always did." For all his success this season, Revis tripped up against two former Clemson wide receivers DeAndre Hopkins of Houston and Sammy Watkins of Buffalo. They are two of the NFL's best young receivers. Hopkins, in Year 3, finished fourth in the NFL with 95.1 yards per game. Watkins, in Year 2, was 11th (80.5). 13 P a g e

In the Jets' loss at the Texans, the Hopkins-Revis matchup went in Hopkins' favor. He was targeted six times when Revis covered him. He had four catches for 98 yards, including a 61-yard touchdown, according to PFF. In Sunday's loss, Watkins got the better of Revis six catches on nine targets for 96 yards. To be fair, Revis did well against Watkins in the first Bills-Jets game three catches on seven targets for 14 yards, with two Watkins drops. Revis this season allowed 583 yards in coverage, per PFF. And 210 of those came in two games Houston (114) and Sunday's finale in Buffalo (96). Those were his worst games, in terms of yards allowed. All told, Revis had the 16th-fewest yards allowed among NFL corners this season, though he missed two games with a concussion. In his 12 games besides those aforementioned two, Revis surrendered 31.1 yards per game. Excluding his numbers in Houston and Buffalo (and yes, those obviously were two very important losses for the Jets), Revis was targeted 68 times this season and allowed 29 catches a catch percentage of just So Revis clearly remains a very good corner, one of the NFL's best. He just didn't play great against two fantastic young receivers. Jets' Muhammad Wilkerson to have surgery on broken leg Wednesday (Dom Cosentino) NJ Advance Media tml#incart_river_index Muhammad Wilkerson, the Jets Pro Bowl defensive end who broke his leg during Sunday's season finale at the Bills, said he would have surgery on Wednesday. Wilkerson tweeted out the news Wednesday morning: "Well I didn't expect the season to end so soon and start the new year with a injury but it's part of the game. Everybody have a great hump day while I have my surgery today thanks for all the prayers" Wilkerson sustained a broken fibula during the third quarter of the Jets' loss at the Bills, a game they had to win to make the playoffs. The fibula is the smaller of the two lower leg bones, and it's not the one on which weight is placed, so it can heal faster than a tibia. Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick had broken his tibia the bigger lower leg bone in December 2014, when he was with the Texans. Yet Fitzpatrick was 100 percent by the start of training camp last summer. Tuesday, in an interview on WFAN radio, Jets head coach Todd Bowles said Wilkerson would be "fine." The other pressing offseason issue with Wilkerson is his contract status. He's due to become a free agent in March, and after an outstanding 2015 that included his first Pro Bowl selection how on earth was he never a Pro Bowler before? Wilkerson is due for a big payday. The Jets could place the franchise tag on him to try to work out a new deal, and they could also franchise him and try to trade him. What they likely don't want to have happen is to let Wilkerson hit free agency and walk, with nothing in return. 14 P a g e

Jets' Brandon Marshall on his past bad reputation: 'I don't believe I'll ever get past that' (Darryl Slater) NJ Advance Media #incart_river_index FLORHAM PARK Wide receiver Brandon Marshall had a wildly productive first season with the Jets in In addition to his 1,502 yards (fourth in the NFL) and 14 touchdown catches (tied for first), he was, by all accounts, a positive force in the Jets' locker room. This hasn't always been the case. Marshall, by his own admission, was an immature jerk earlier in his career. But now he is 31, and 10 years into his NFL career, and he has grown up. Still, he believes his past bad reputation will come up again next season if he and the Jets don't improve on their 10-6 showing from "If I drop a ball, if we don't win next year, it'll be the same stories written about me, because of my past," Marshall said. "So I don't believe I'll ever get past that, and that's something I have to live with." Marshall has been traded three times from Denver to Miami, Miami to Chicago, and Chicago to the Jets. His ending in Chicago, late last season, was particularly sour. So Marshall felt wary and guarded when he initially joined the Jets. "I came into this situation not wanting to build relationships, not wanting to get attached to anything, because I had a bitter taste in my mouth, as far as how things happened in Chicago," he said. "When I got in here, immediately, that changed. There was a [negative] perception around this building. I've got to tell you, this is the best locker room, the best team I've ever been on, as far as from a management standpoint." Marshall has two years left on his contract a $9.5 million salary cap figure next season ($500,000 more than 2015) and a $7.5 million cap hit in He has no more guaranteed money left in his deal, so the Jets can cut him with zero cap ramifications after next season if things go south. But right now, coming off a productive season (for the Jets and Marshall), there is no reason to believe that will happen. Marshall sees himself as a totally different person from the guy who was traded to Miami in "The second year in Miami is when I really got it," he said. "That's when the transformation started in my life. Now, I'm not perfect. I think that sometimes we confuse personality and character. That's disappointing, because you don't have to like me or the way I live my life or how I may talk or where I come from. "But character is a big thing, and that's all you have at the end of the day. And that's important to me. I feel that the first couple years of my career, I did a great job of ruining that. I feel like when I got to Miami, I built on that a little more. And then the second year, I totally changed my life, changed my approach. "So when things happen from character, whether it's something on Twitter or whatever, people automatically assume, because of my reputation. I don't think I'll ever change perceptions. I always sit down at the end of the year and self-assess myself in the situation." Marshall said he remains angry about how things ended in Chicago. (Here he is openly discussing the Bears trading him to the Jets.) 15 P a g e

"I was kind of shell-shocked a little bit [about] how things happened last year in Chicago, mainly because of the things that I was trying to build in the community, and also breaking that [negative] perception and that stigma," Marshall said. "I made not only awesome relationships [in Chicago] with my teammates, but also with the guys in the building, people in the community. That was the first place that I felt like was home." He had to leave it behind, and now he has begun to make a new organization his home, with the Jets. Can Jets' Lorenzo Mauldin become a complete, every-down linebacker next season? (Darryl Slater) NJ Advance Media FLORHAM PARK As the Jets begin the offseason, one of their primary needs is at the outside linebacker/edge rusher spot. They cut one of their outside linebackers, former first-round draft pick Quinton Coples, during the 2015 season. Their other outside linebacker, Calvin Pace, just completed his 13th season, and is a 35-year-old pending free agent. The Jets last year drafted an outside linebacker, Lorenzo Mauldin, in the third round. He spent his rookie season mostly as a situational, third-down pass rusher. Mauldin knows the next step for him involves becoming a complete, every-down outside linebacker whom his coaches can trust to do more. "I started to progress a little bit more [late in the season] than I thought I would for my rookie season," Mauldin said. "I feel like I did pretty good things year, and all I can do is build on it for next year." Mauldin, who was known primarily as a pass rusher coming out of Louisville, finished his rookie season with four sacks, along with seven quarterback hits, and 16 hurries, according to Pro Football Focus. He ranked fourth on the Jets in sacks and hurries. All along, everybody knew Mauldin could chase quarterbacks, and he proved in 2015 that he could do that in the NFL. Mauldin was less familiar, coming out of college, with the other, more nuanced parts of playing outside linebacker. Those are the things he must prove he can do, if he wants to play every down. As for what's next, Mauldin said, "My biggest thing is being able to learn how to drop in coverage, being able to play against the run, be able to come back and show the coaches that I'm an every-down player. "Right now, I feel like they were just trying to put me into the defense, to see what I can do. I'm pretty sure that I put my stamp on everything, showing that, with speed, I am a good enough player to play on every down. It's just being able to establish myself more into the defense than what I did this year." Jets' Brandon Marshall's message to Johnny Manziel: 'I don't think you get it' (Darryl Slater) NJ Advance Media ml#incart_river_index 16 P a g e

Jets wide receiver Brandon Marshall has overcome his share of personal problems during his 10-year NFL career. During Tuesday night's episode of Showtime's "Inside the NFL," Marshall delivered a message to Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel, whose first two NFL seasons were a disaster. And Manziel has nobody to blame but himself. Marshall was asked about Manziel during a segment of Tuesday's show that had Marshall offer direct advice to the troubled young quarterback. "Johnny, Johnny, Johnny," Marshall said. "This is a serious topic. Well, first, you've got to forget about football, sir. You need to go get your life together. And to be quite frank, I don't think you get it. You don't understand. You're ruining a very, very special opportunity. It's an honor to be in the NFL. "There is a thing out there called divine mentorship, where you can learn from others' mistakes. He has the opportunity to really sit back and reflect on his situation, look at others, and learn from it and be better." The latest Manziel mess happened last weekend, as the Browns lost their season finale to the Steelers. Manziel was reportedly spotted partying in Las Vegas, while wearing an absurd disguise. Manziel has well-documented issues with alcohol, including a rehab stint last year. The Browns this season made it clear to him that they were taking a zero-tolerance policy for any further missteps even if his behavior is legal. Now, Manziel's days in Cleveland might be done, just two seasons after he was drafted 22nd overall. The Browns, a miserable franchise, are searching for a new head coach and general manager, after firing ex-jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine and Ray Farmer. Cleveland went 3-13 this season and has won just three of its past 21 games since November of This isn't the first time Marshall has discussed Manziel's problems on "Inside the NFL." In late November, Marshall expressed concern about Manziel's drinking, after he was caught on video partying at a club during the Browns' bye week. "Recovery, addiction, and mental illness is serious," Marshall said in November. "So we don't know his diagnosis. But the guy, he went to rehab. So if he is an alcoholic, and this came up, it's a problem. "If he's an alcoholic, and he's doing this, this is problematic. This is a big issue. When he was sober, he was definitely a better teammate, and a better player. So that's the player that the ownership wants." NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Jets fire special teams coordinator Bobby April (Seth Walder) New York Daily News January 7, It turned out that Bobby April wasn t safe, after all. Despite Todd Bowles saying on Monday that he expected his entire staff to return in 2016, the Jets coach elected to fire April, his special teams coordinator, on Wednesday after a dismal season for that unit. The 17 P a g e

team also let go of assistant special teams coordinator Steve Hagen and assistant offensive line coach Ron Heller two holdovers from the Rex Ryan regime. This was April s first year with the Jets. After having our season-ending meetings with the staff, I decided that changes were necessary in these areas, Bowles said in a statement. I appreciate their contributions this past season and wish them success in the future. The Jets were dreadful on special teams in 2015, surrendering four touchdowns two on punt returns, one on a blocked punt and one on a kickoff return fumble. They ranked dead last in net punting, 26th in average kick return and 14th in punt returning. They had the third most average punt return yards allowed including the two touchdowns but were slightly above the league average in kickoff returns. They still kicked reasonably well, with 26 of 29 field goals made, despite losing Nick Folk to injury part way through the year. Despite his unit s play this season, one current head coaching candidate was interested in adding April to his staff, according to a source. When Bowles was asked Monday if he expected his entire staff to return next season, Bowles said, Yes. But in the same press conference he was also critical of special teams, saying that at times he was disappointed in their performance. I mean, the returns, yes, Bowles said Monday. We have to make tackles here and there. Sometimes, we have to make plays. We didn t make enough plays sometimes with the defense, sometimes with the offense, sometimes with the special teams. The firing of April means the Jets will have their fifth special teams coordinator in as many seasons in Muhammad Wilkerson to have surgery Wednesday, Jets lineman fractured right leg against Bills (Seth Walder) New York Daily News Muhammad Wilkerson will have surgery to repair his fractured right fibula Wednesday, the Pro Bowl defensive lineman announced on Twitter. Wilkerson suffered the severe injury in the season finale against the Buffalo Bills in which the Jets lost "Well I didn't expect the season to end so soon and start the new year with a injury but it's part of the game," Wilkerson said. "Everybody have a great hump day while I have my surgery today thanks for all the prayers." Tuesday on WFAN, head coach Todd Bowles said he expected Wilkerson to be "fine." The coach said recently that he s unsure what the defensive lineman's timeline for recovery will be, however. The now-injured Wilkerson is an impending free agent, but at this stage it seems likely that the Jets will place the franchise tag on him. From there the team could lock him up to a long-term deal, trade him to another team that is willing to do so, or simply have him play under the franchise tag and let him walk in P a g e
