4 Head Coach Brad Evans After taking the reins of the University of Toledo women s soccer program on March 5, 2001, Brad Evans was charged with the task of taking a six-year-old program to heights it had never reached before. In 12 seasons, he has done that and taken the Rockets to another level. Now entering his 13th year as head coach, Evans has guided the Rockets to unparalleled success, culminated by three Mid-American Conference regular-season championships (2008, 10, 11) and a league-tying best four tourney titles (2006, 07, 08, 11). The Toledo head coach has an intense drive to win, but above all else is his desire to see each student-athlete make the most of her opportunities, both on and off the pitch. Evans has a career record of in 17 seasons as a collegiate head coach, including at Toledo. The two-time MAC Coach of the Year (2010, 11) has taken the Rockets to a league-tying best four NCAA Championships appearances (2006, 07, 08, Brad Evans Head Coach of 2006, 07, 08 & 11 MAC Tourney Champs 2010 & 11 MAC Coach of the Year 2007 & 11 All-Ohio Coach of the Year 13th Season at Toledo Wooster Record at UT 11). His players have received three MAC Player of the Year awards (Molly Cornwell & 08 and Rachel MacLeod - Offensive in 2011) and a pair of conference Freshman of the Year honors (Vicki Traven in 2008, MacLeod in 2010), as well as 14 first-team All-MAC selections. A 1992 graduate of College of Wooster, Evans received a bachelor s degree in education. He also earned his master s degree in education from Ashland University in Evans and his wife, Kristen, reside in Sylvania. They have two daughters, Kari (12) and Elizabeth (11). Under his tutelage, UT has posted team grade-point averages above 3.5 in 17 of the last 25 semesters. In Spring 2013, the squad carried a GPA, best among Toledo s sports programs for a fifth time in the last seven grade periods. HOME FIELD DOMINANCE Evans and the Rockets have been nearly unbeatable at Scott Park over the last eight seasons, compiling a stout (.753) ledger. Aiding Toledo s stellar mark at home under Evans was a schoolrecord 14-match unbeaten stretch over the course of the 2009 and 2010 seasons, registering a mark during this period. Toledo has won at least nine home contests on four occasions under Evans, including a school-record 11 victories during the 2008 campaign. 2012: TOLEDO ADVANC- ES TO MAC TOURNAMENT SEMIFINALS FOR SEVENTH- CONSECUTIVE SEASON Toledo tallied a overall record in 2012, in the Mid-American Conference. UT finished fourth in the MAC West Division and made its eighth-consecutive postseason appearance under Coach Evans. The No. 6 seed Rockets advanced to the MAC Tournament Semifinals for an unprecented seventh-consecutive season after outlasting No. 3 seed EMU, 2-1, on penalty kicks. In the Final Four, the preseason favorite to capture the MAC s West Division and Tournament title came up a little short against No. 2 seed and eventual NCAA Championships participant Central Michigan, 1-0. Senior Natalia Gaitàn and senior Kristen Mattei represented UT on the all-tournament team. Individually, Gaitàn received second-team all-conference honors. Toledo enjoyed a magical 2011 campaign by successfully defending its MAC regular-season championship and capturing a league-record fourth tournament title. The Rockets (14-7-2, MAC) finished first in the MAC regularseason standings and secured the top seed in the league tourney for the third time in the last four seasons. Individually, sophomore Rachel MacLeod and Head Coach Brad Evans were named the MAC Offensive Player and Coach of the Year, respectively. UT also placed MacLeod as well as senior goalie Vicki Traven and junior Natalia Gaitàn on the first team, while senior Kristen Lynn and freshman Alexis Tice received second-team allleague recognition. The preseason favorite to capture the MAC s West Division and Tournament title, the Rockets opened the season with arguably their toughest non-conference schedule in school history and struggled, finishing with a mark. Coach Evans and his staff experimented with different players in different positions and tried to find the right combinations, and at one point was saddled with a three-match losing streak, its longest since All that planning and hard work paid off though when MAC play began, as Toledo found its stride and sported an eight-match unbeaten stretch (7-0-1), tied for third-longest in school history. The Rockets cruised through their MAC slate with a league-best mark, second-best record in school history for a single season. No. 8 seed Ohio (8-0) in the quarterfinal round, before topping No. 5 seed Buffalo (3-1) in the semifinals. The Midnight Blue & Gold then finished off its record-setting championship run with a shutout victory over No. 3 seed Western Michigan (1-0) in the finals, with all the post-season matches taking place at the friendly confines of Scott Park. Senior Ana Reynolds, Lynn, Gaitàn and MacLeod each represented UT on the all-tournament team. Toledo s season came to an end in the first round of the NCAA Championships against nationally ranked Marquette in overtime (1-0). Academically, Gaitàn earned a spot on the NSCAA Scholar All-America Third Team. In addition, Lynn and sophomore Nicole Gyurgyik earned Academic All- District accolades. Lynn was chosen as a first-team academic all-district selection and was the first Rocket to advance to the national ballot for Academic All- America consideration. Gyurgyik was a third-team academic all-district recipient, and the two selections were the most in a single season in the history of the program. The Rockets also had eight studentathletes named to the Academic All- MAC Team. UT tied with Central Michigan for the most academic honorees and were represented by seniors Alyssa Niese, Lynn, Reynolds and Traven, juniors Megan Blake, Rachael Kravitz and Gaitàn, along with sophomore Gyurgyik. Niese became only the second player in school history to earn academic all-league accolades on three occasions, joining Ali Leak ( ). 2010: TOLEDO RE- TURNS TO TOP OF MAC MOUNTAIN Toledo sported an impressive overall record in 2010, including a league-record mark in the MAC. UT also tallied a school-record 11-match win streak and captured a share of its second conference regular-season championship in the last three seasons. The Rockets were ranked as high as 31st in the nation in Rating Percentage Index (RPI) and as high as fourth in the Great Lakes Region in the NSCAA rankings. The top-seed Rockets advanced to the MAC Tournament Semifinals for the fifth-consecutive season with a home victory against eighth-seed Ohio (1-0). In the semifinals, UT was upset by fifthseed Western Michigan (1-0). Evans was named the 2010 MAC Coach of the Year for the first time ever, freshman Rachel MacLeod was selected MAC Freshman of the Year and five Rockets earned spots on the all-conference squad. MacLeod was selected as the league s top newcomer and became the second Toledo student-athlete to receive the honor in the last three seasons (Vicki Traven in 2008). Senior Erin Flynn and junior Kristen Lynn each earned first-team All-MAC accolades, while senior Brittany Hensler, junior Vicki Traven and sophomore Rachael Kravitz received second-team All-MAC recognition. In addition, sophomore Natalia Gaitàn was named to second-team All- Great Lakes Region, while Lynn was tabbed to the third team, respectively. The Rockets duo become the fifth and sixth players in the program s history to be selected to the all-region squad. The Rockets, picked third in the MAC West Division s preseason poll, also featured a school-record nine academic all-conference honorees, which included seniors Flynn and Hensler, juniors Lynn, Jaimie Morsillo, Alyssa Niese and Traven, along with sophomores Megan Blake, Gaitàn and Kravitz. 2009: SEASON THAT BEGAN WITH PROMISE & ENDED WITH DISAPPOINTMENT Toledo registered its then thirdhighest win total in the program s history in 2009, sporting an overall ledger, in the MAC. UT made its fifth-consecutive post-season appearance and advanced to the MAC Tournament Semifinals for the fourth-consecutive campaign. In the semifinals, the Rockets battled top-seed and eventual tourney champion Central Michigan to a scoreless tie through regulation and two overtime periods, before falling 4-2 on penalty kicks, ending their three-year reign as tournament champions. The Rockets, picked first in the MAC s preseason poll, featured a firstteam All-MAC selection in senior Ali Leak, as well as five academic all-conference honorees, which included seniors Nora Jereb and Leak, junior Erin Flynn and sophomores Vicki Traven and Alyssa Niese. 2008: MAC TOURNEY THREE PEAT & SEASON TO REMEM- BER Evans led the Rockets to a overall ledger in 2008, including an impressive MAC record. The Midnight Blue & Gold set school records in wins, shutouts (12) and goals-against average (0.94) en route to its first regular-season conference title. UT, seeded No. 1 for the league tourney, downed eighth-seed Miami (1-0) in the quarterfinals, fourth-seed Bowling Green (1-0) in the semifinals and third-seed Eastern Michigan (1-0) in the finals. Their season concluded in the first round of the NCAA Championships with a defeat against top-ranked and College Cup Finalist Notre Dame

Under Evans guidance, junior Molly Cornwell became only the second player in league history to repeat as MAC Player of the Year, while newcomer Vicki Traven earned MAC Freshman of the Year accolades. In addition, senior Tara Witt was a second-team all-conference selection, while newcomers Kristen Lynn and Jaimie Morsillo joined Traven on the league s All-Freshman Team. 2007: ROCKETS SUCCESS- FULLY DEFEND MAC TOUR- NEY TITLE Toledo tallied a overall mark and in the MAC to finish second in the 2007 regular-season standings. The Rockets set then-school records for most wins and fewest losses in a season, both overall and in MAC play. UT also established new marks with 43 goals scored. Toledo, which was picked eighth in the MAC s preseason poll, downed seventh-seed Kent State (4-3) in the quarterfinal round of the postseason tourney. In the semifinals, Toledo battled thirdseed Northern Illinois to a 0-0 doubleovertime draw and advanced, 4-3, on penalty kicks. UT capped off its championship run with a 2-2 double-overtime draw against fourth-seed Bowling Green, but captured the crown, 3-2, on penalty kicks in the finals. Their magical campaign came to an end in West Lafayette, IN in the first round of the NCAA Championships against Sweet 16 participant Indiana (3-2) in double overtime. A record three Rockets earned firstteam all-league honors in 2007 senior Suzi Siwinski, senior Pene Hughes and sophomore Molly Cornwell. Cornwell was also named the MAC Player of the Year, becoming the first Rocket ever to garner player of the year accolades. 2006: ROCKETS GO DANC- ING!!! The Rockets were seeded fifth in the 2006 MAC Tournament, after finishing with a record in regular-season play. UT downed two-time defending champion Bowling Green (3-0) in the quarterfinal round, before topping Miami (1-0) in dramatic fashion in overtime in the semifinals at the friendly confines of Scott Park. The Midnight Blue & Gold finished off its first championship in school history with a victory over Northern Illinois (2-1) in the finals in front of its home fans. The four All-MAC honorees are the second most in school history, surpassed only by five selections during the 1997 campaign. 2005: TOLEDO QUALIFIES FOR MAC TOURNAMENT FOR FIRST TIME UNDER EV- ANS Toledo finished with a overall mark in 2005 to equal the then-school record for wins. UT was eighth in the final league standings, 5-5-1, and battled top-seeded and eventual tournament champion Bowling Green to a scoreless tie through regulation and two overtime periods, before falling on penalty kicks in the quarterfinal round. UT ranked in the top five in the MAC in seven categories, including tied for first in shutouts (10), second in goalsagainst average (1.02) and third in goals scored (28) and total points (76). Individually, the Rockets featured two first-team All-MAC performers in seniors Kelly Langenbeck and Pam Richard, and three academic all-league honorees in junior Jen Whipple, junior Nichole Williams and Langenbeck. 2004: CLOSE BUT NO CI- GAR Toledo was good enough at times to compete against the elite teams in the MAC in Unfortunately for Head Coach Brad Evans has coached 14 first-team All- MAC and six All-Great Lakes Region performers. the Midnight Blue & Gold, many of the bright moments were overshadowed by a disappointing overall record. On an individual basis, newcomer Pene Hughes was named to the All- MAC Freshman Team. 2003: YEAR FILLED WITH PEAKS & VALLEYS The 2003 version of the Rockets was filled with peaks and valleys. Toledo fielded a young team plagued by injuries and other distractions. UT finished with an overall mark, 5-7 in the MAC, and missed qualifying for the league tournament by two points. Individually, senior Melissa Lesage received first-team All-MAC honors and newcomer Nichole Williams became Toledo s first-ever All-MAC Freshman Team selection. In addition, Lesage earned All-Ohio first-team recognition and sophomore Pam Richard garnered All-Ohio third-team honors, respectively. 2002: CONTINUING RE- BUILDING PROCESS UT tallied a respectable overall mark in 2002 and failed to qualify for the conference tournament by a mere point. The Rockets were explosive offensively and scored 36 goals, the secondhighest total in school history. A trio of Toledo players earned third-team All-Ohio accolades in 2002

In addition, Lesage garnered Academic All-MAC recognition. 2001: EVANS ASSEMBLES YOUNG NUCLEUS IN QUEST TO JOIN MAC ELITE In Evans first year at the helm in 2001, he guided UT to a overall record and just missed qualifying for the MAC Tournament. The Rockets found themselves atop the league standings as late as Sept. 28. Toledo posted impressive early-season wins against MAC Tournament participants Eastern Michigan, Buffalo and tournament champion Miami. It was the first time in the program s history that Toledo was on top of the standings that late in the season. Evans led UT to its early-season success despite a limited time to recruit and implement his style of play. Individually, junior netminder Elise Donovan earned first-team all-league accolades. EVANS GETS COACHING START AT DIVISION II POW- ER ASHLAND UNIVERSITY Evans success of turning programs around preceded his hiring at Toledo. Prior to becoming the second head coach in the history of the Rocket program, Evans had a successful coaching stint at Ashland, a Division II school in Ashland, OH, from Evans women s squads at Ashland compiled an impressive 38-5 record in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play and overall in his five years at the helm of the Eagles. Ashland was GLIAC champion four times and made the NCAA Championships in 1997, 1998, 1999 and The Eagles advanced to the NCAA regionals in 1999 and 2000, and made the Final Four in Evans began his coaching career at Ashland as an assistant women s soccer coach from In 1996, he took over the position as the head coach for both the men s and women s teams. In Evans third season as head coach in 1998, the Eagles finished with a record and advanced to the Final Four of the NCAA Championships. Evans was named Division II Regional Coach of the Year, and was a National Coach of the Year finalist. In 1999, Ashland went and was ranked No. 2 in the nation in the final regular-season poll. In 2000, the Eagles were and won their fourth straight league title. EVANS PLAYING DAYS & COACHING ORIGIN A native of Hudson, OH, Evans played soccer at the College of Wooster, earning a bachelor s degree in He was a four-year letterman who helped lead the Scots to two NCAA Division III playoff berths. He later earned his master s degree in education from Ashland University in After graduation, Evans began his coaching career with the Emerald Soccer Club in Hudson, OH. In that capacity he worked with Timo Liekoski, the U.S. national team assistant coach and Olympic head coach at the time. Evans also spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Hudson High School. Evans is well known throughout the state of Ohio for his innovative and successful techniques in working with youth players and is the past President of the Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association. Evans has been a member of the Region II Ohio Development Program staff since 2002, and in 2007 was head coach for the Under-15 Regional Team s European Tour, which won three of four matches, including a victory against Paris St. Germaine. He also was the 2003 Region II ODP head coach for the Under-16 Regional Team and an assistant coach for the Under-17 Regional Team. Evans was a featured speaker at the 2002 Ohio High School Athletic Association Girls All-State Banquet and the 2003 Ohio Youth Soccer Association Annual Meeting. He was also the Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association All-Star Game selection committee chair for women and the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference coaches liaison. 10 Assistant Coach Bruce Peterson Bruce Peterson is in his fourth season as an assistant coach for the Rockets women s soccer team. Peterson is entering his third season as a full-time assistant after having worked as the volunteer assistant in He assists with all aspects of the program, including field coaching, recruiting and performing other administrative duties. When you have the opportunity to add someone to your staff with the passion, experience and professionalism that Bruce possesses, you do so, two-time Mid-American Coach of the Year Brad Evans said. Bruce has connected positively with players and coaches alike, and I m confident our program will continue to prosper with his help. Under Peterson s guidance, a total of eight Rockets have earned All-MAC honors on 11 occasions, including five first-team all-league selections. During his three years in Toledo, the Midnight Blue & Gold has amassed an impressive overall record and a mark in the conference. In 2012, Peterson helped Toledo advance to the MAC Tournament Semifinals for an unprecented seventhconsecutive season. Individually, senior Natalia Gaitàn received second-team all-conference honors. Gaitàn also earned a spot on the Academic All-America Third Team and All-District First Team, becoming the first member of the program to earn Academic All-America accolades. In 2011, Peterson helped mentor the Rockets to successfully defend their MAC regular-season championship and capture a league-record fourth tournament title. UT finished with a overall record, including a mark in the MAC. Toledo finished first in the MAC regular-season standings and secured the top seed in the league tourney for the third time in the last four seasons. He was a big factor in a Toledo offense that outscored its opponents, , and ranked first in the conference in total points, goals (44) and assists (39) and corner kicks (139), all single-season school records. Individually, sophomore Rachel MacLeod fueled UT s high-powered attack with 11 goals and nine assists (31 pts.) en route to being named the MAC Offensive Player of the Year. MacLeod led the league in total points, tallies and match-winning scores (6), as well as tied for first in helpers. In 2010, Peterson aided UT to its second MAC regular-season title in the last three seasons. Toledo sported an impressive overall ledger, including a league-record mark in the conference. Individually, MacLeod was selected the MAC Freshman of the Year and became the second Toledo studentathlete to receive the honor in the last three seasons (Vicki Traven in 2008). In addition, junior Kristen Lynn was named to third-team All-Great Lake Region. The 2010 first-team allleague selection finished second in the MAC in shots (63), tied for third in match-winning goals (3), tied for seventh in points (18) and tied for eighth in scores (7). Peterson, who was selected to instruct at this summer s EXACT Soccer ID Camp at Benedictine University, brings over 30 years of coaching experience at the professional indoor, club and high school level. Prior to working at Toledo, Peterson served as the Girl s/women s (U13-U18) Director of Coaching for Pacesetter Soccer Club in He was also a coach at PSC for women s teams ranging in age from U-13, U-14, U-15 and U-16 from A resident of Maumee, Peterson was the head coach at St. Ursula Academy from and led the Arrows to six straight Ohio High School Athletic Association district finals appearances, winning four-consecutive titles from In 2005, St. Ursula advanced to the state Final Four. Peterson also had a stint as a coach in the Greater Toledo Futbol Club (GTFC) working with U-10, U-12 and U-15 girls team from Previous to working in the Toledo area, he was a game analyst for the Detroit Rockers in the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL) from Peterson s experience also includes 10-plus years coaching in Royal Oak, MI. He was a girls and boys coach in the Royal Oak Youth Soccer Association from , while also serving as the ROYSA Director of Coaching from and the boys varsity coach at Royal Oak Kimball High School from He has also served as an assistant and head coach on the State Olympic Development Program staff for both Ohio North and Michigan and been a part of the Region II Olympic Delevelopment Program (ODP) Staff. Peterson holds his USSF B License and National Youth License. As part of the ODP program, he has spent time as a team selection evaluator and as a state F License Clinician. Peterson was a four-year starter at St. Michael s College in Winooski, VT and graduated with a degree in political science in He continued his education at the American Graduate School of International Management in Glendale, AZ and earned a master s degree. While working on his master s degree, Peterson played one year of semi-professional soccer. He is married to Robin, and the couple has five children, Alice, Brett, Sarah, Rachael and Samantha.

11 Assistant Coach Vicki Traven Former Toledo standout Vicki Traven is in her first season as an assistant coach for the Rockets women s soccer team. Traven will assist with all aspects of the program, including training and developing the goalkeepers, video breakdown and creating highlight videos. I m thrilled to have Vicki join our staff, two-time Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year Brad Evans said. After literally looking at hundreds of resumes, Vicki s name continually rose to the top for a variety of reasons. She is extremely intelligent and a tremendously hard worker and these traits are a part of her character. Her problem solving skills, her passion for teaching and her thirst for learning are impressive factors that tell me that she will continue to grow and improve. Her commitment to this program and experience with what it takes to win titles and play in the NCAA Championship were also huge factors in bringing her on board, and I believe will greatly benefit our entire team. Traven is a 2012 Toledo graduate with a bachelor s degree in exercise science and a concentration in pre-medical studies. She enters the collegiate coaching profession following a record-setting career for the Midnight Blue & Gold, where she was a four-year starter ( ) between the posts. A two-time allconference selection (first team in 2011, second team in 2010), Traven wrapped up her illustrious career ranked first in the MAC record books in shutouts (34), second in minutes played (6,972:07) and fourth in goals-against average (0.81). She also tops the UT annals in career victories (51). A stalwart in goal, Traven was a school-record seven-time MAC Defensive Player of the Week honoree (once in 2008, once in 2009, three times in 2010 and twice in 2011). Traven was part of 2011 UT senior class that collectively won a schoolrecord tying 56 matches, capturing three MAC regular-season titles (2008, 10, 11) and two conference tournament crowns (2008, 11). As a senior in 2011, Traven was also chosen first-team All-MAC, first-team Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association (OCSA) and first-team Academic All- Ohio. She appeared in 22 matches, tallying a record with a 0.90 GAA and eight shutouts. Traven ranked third in the league in blankings, fourth in GAA and seventh in save percentage (.768). As a junior in 2010, Traven was named second-team all-conference. She saw action in 20 matches and went with a 0.79 GAA and a school-record 10 shutouts. Traven logged 1,820:23 in goal and finished first in the MAC in blankings, fourth in GAA, fifth in save percentage (.838) and sixth in saves (83). As a sophomore in 2009, Traven finished with 0.80 GAA and seven shutouts in 20 matches. She totaled 1,806:14 in goal and ranked third in the MAC in blankings, fourth in GAA, tied for fourth in saves (77) and fifth in save percentage (.828). As a freshman in 2008, Traven posted a record with a singleseason school-record 0.75 GAA and nine shutouts, en route to becoming the first Rocket to garner MAC Freshman of the Year honors. She finished fourth in the MAC in GAA and save percentage (.845), fifth in shutouts per match (0.47 spm) and tied for ninth in saves. An excellent student in the classroom as well, Traven was a three-time Academic All-MAC selection. Last fall, Traven served as a volunteer assistant for the Rockets. She assisted the coaching staff in team practices and matches, as well as instructed goalkeeper training. Prior to working at UT, Traven served as a staff coach for the Metro FC Toledo Club for one year for U-11, U-13 and U-14 girls and for the Toledo Footaball Academy for two years for U-11 through U-18 boys.

12 2013 Season Outlook Three-Time Mid-American Conference Regular-Season Cham- pion Toledo Looks to Return to Top of the League in 2013 The Toledo women s soccer team has moved past a disappointing 2012 campaign with its sights set on returning to the top of the Mid-American Conference in After capturing the MAC regular season and conference crowns in 2011, the Rockets were the preseason favorite to repeat in But the Midnight Blue & Gold was decimated by injuries from the start and limped to a non-conference record. Though healthier by the start of the MAC season, Toledo never found consistent form and finished the year with a overall record. This included a conference mark which was good enough to qualify for the MAC Tournament for a school-record eighth consecutive season. In the conference tourney, the Rockets enjoyed one of their highlights of the season with an upset victory in penalty kicks against No. 3 seed Eastern Michigan. The magic was short-lived, however, as UT suffered a 1-0 loss to No. 2 seed Central Michigan in the semifinals. With 16 letterwinners and six starters returning in 2013, the Rockets won t rely on the play of individual talent, but instead on a consistent team effort in order to win. This team will be defined by the sum of its parts, as there are no superstars here, said two-time MAC Coach of the Year Brad Evans. We re going to rely on each other. Every player has a part to play. If we can put together a truly harmonious effort, we will be able to compete. The Rockets will be captained by senior forward Rachel MacLeod (Westerville, OH), junior midfielder Meghan Topolewski (Waterford, MI) and senior defender Becky Rhodes (Highland Heights, OH). Evans is excited about the tone the captains have set heading into the season, but he is looking for all of the upperclassmen to show leadership this fall. You must have captains who are responsible for communication, and I think there s a high level of investment by those players. However, without a group effort from the seniors and the juniors none of that would matter. As Evans breaks down his roster, he s clearly excited about coaching this 2013 team. Similar to last year, much of Toledo s success will be determined by how healthy the Rockets are this fall as UT carries a couple injuries into the 2013 campaign. On the coaching side, I m excited about problem solving and figuring out how the coaching staff is going to piece our team s puzzle together, Evans said. Some of that is an unknown, just because of the number of injuries we re carrying into the season. 13 2013 Season Outlook FORWARDS The Rockets possessed an above-average offense in 2012, scoring 21 goals to rank sixth in the MAC. Toledo s inability to put the ball in the back of the net contributed to its overall disappointing 2012 season. If the Rockets are to return to their league-leading 2011 form, they will need a more consistent output from their attack in UT is led up front by senior Rachel MacLeod. The two-time all-league performer scored 31 points and was named MAC Offensive Player of the Year as a sophomore in 2011, but she couldn t recapture the magic the following season. After battling an ankle injury for the majority of spring camp, MacLeod tallied 13 points on five goals and three assists in Now a senior and a captain, MacLeod is on a mission to return to the top of the MAC scoring lists. Rachel showed a real fire this spring and demonstrated that last fall s disappointment was in the past, Evans said. She s worked incredibly hard to become a 90-minute player. If she continues to apply the same kind of effort moving forward, I believe she will be the focal point of our attack this fall. Last year we struggled a little bit with having any consistency in the attack. Rachel was injured here and there, and when she was in I don t think her play was very consistent. Hopefully this year Rachel can stay healthy this year, and I think she s far better prepared than she was last season. After MacLeod, the only returning player to tally more than one goal in 2012 is sophomore Angelica Hernandez (Bogotà, Columbia). Hernandez scored two goals while starting every match in her debut season as a Rocket. She is a versatile player, having contributed all over the pitch last fall. Evans said that RACHEL MacLEOD Hernandez ideally would see little time in the attack this fall. That being said, the Rockets might need her there for extra scoring punch. Kika went through a lot of transition last year both on the field and off, and I m confident she will be a more consistent presence this season, Evans said. My goal is to find a consistent home for Kika as we moved her from the back, to forward and even into the midfield last fall. Hopefully Kika doesn t have to play up front this year, but I m keeping my mind open based on what I see. Like Hernandez, senior Emily Tus- tin (London, ONT) is a player capable of contributing from multiple positions on the pitch. In her three seasons at Toledo, Tustin has started six of 50 matches, including one start for the Rockets last fall. In the spring, she worked extremely hard on her ball-striking with the goal of becoming a scoring threat from distance. Emily has found a level of comfort with herself and within the team, and it showed this spring with solid performances, Evans said. She can play either a forward or wide midfield role, and we will need a consistent approach from her this fall. Junior Sarah Seig (Cincinnati, OH) rounds out the Rockets 2013 returning attack force. In her first two seasons wearing the Midnight Blue & Gold, Seig has started five of 18 matches and showed flashes of quickness in attack. The challenge for Sarah has been to consistently demonstrate her skills, Evans said. With her maturity growing off the field, we saw improvement everyday on the field in training. The team needs her to play up to her potential this fall and develop a strong chemistry with the other forwards. Providing additional depth for the Rockets in the attack will be freshmen Shelby Antonacci (Perrysburg, OH), Kiersten Johnson (Cincinnati, OH), Brooke Maletic (Springfield, OH), Regan Price (Bellefontaine, OH), Han- nah Scafaria (Kalamazoo, MI) and Lauren Taylor (Frankfort, KY). Antonacci tallied an impressive 77 goals and 48 assists (202 points) in her four-year career at nearby Lake High School. She earned second-team all-state, conference Player of the Year, first-team all-district and first-team all-league accolades as a senior, totaling 21 scores with 11 helpers (53 points). Antonacci played a key role in helping her team capture a fourth-consecutive league championship. Shelby is a left-sided player who when fit, could challenge for playing time at wide forward or midfielder and provide us another option in the attacking half of the field. Johnson posted 32 goals and 18 assists (82 points) in her three-year career at Milford High School. She received firstteam all-district, first-team all-city and first-team allleague accolades as a senior, registering 15 tallies and nine helpers (39 points). Johnson led the conference in total points and goals ANGELICA HERNANDEZ in her final season, as well as ranking second in assists.

14 2013 Season Outlook She also helped guide her squad to a fourth-straight conference title. Kiersten has tremendous pace and times her runs well, Evans said. She has continued to develop as a player since the day we started recruiting her, and that s a sign she s striving to constantly improve. As she gains confidence, I see her making significant contributions to our overall attack. Maletic totaled a whopping 84 goals and 36 assists (204 points) in her fouryear career at Catholic Central High School. She garnered second-team allstate, conference Player of the Year and first-team Miami Valley recognition as a senior, tallying a school-record 36 markers and 15 helpers (87 points). An outstanding player on the club level as well, Maletic was recently credited with the match-winning assist in guiding the Ohio Premier ECNL to the U-18 National Championship. A teammate of fellow Rocket newcomer Hannah O Shaughnessy with Ohio Premier, Maletic helped propelled them to finish No. 6 nationally in Price accumulated an outstanding 67 goals and 44 assists (178 points) in her four-year career at Bellefontaine High School. She collected first-team all-state, first-team all-district and conference Player of the Year honors as a senior tricaptain and Team MVP, finishing with 19 markers with five assists (43 points). A tremendous player on the club level as well, Price was a member of the ODP State Team for six years ( ), Region Pool Squad for two years (2009, 2011) and Regional Team in Regan can be a dynamic player up and down the outside of the field for us, Evans said. She has good athletic tools and has shown an ability to be an effective player at every level she has played. My primary goal ASHLEY ROSS is to see a healthy, committed Regan focused on showing off her tenacity to be an attacking every day in training and matches. Scafaria, who will miss the fall season with a hip injury, registered 24 goals with 16 assists (64 points) as a junior at Portage Northern High School, earning honorable mention all-state, first-team all-region, firstteam all-district and first-team allconference accolades. She also sat out her senior year due to injury. On the club level, Scafaria was a member of the ODP State Team in 2007, 2008 and 2011 and Regional Team in 2011, helping them capture a national championship. Hannah is focused on her rehab from hip surgery in the spring and that will keep her out this fall, Evans said. She has an instinctive ability around the goal that we re excited to continue to develop with her next spring. I believe when Hannah is healthy, she will be a vital contributor to our young attackers. Taylor finished MEGHAN TOPOLEWSKI with 86 goals and 44 assists (schoolrecord 216 points) in her four-year career at Franklin County High School. She accepted secondteam all-region and squad MVP accolades as a senior captain, posting a schoolrecord 25 tallies and eight helpers (team-high 58 points). Taylor was also selected County MVP by the Frankfort State MIDFIELDERS Journal and named to the Capital City Classic, District and Region All-Tournament Teams. Lauren is a versatile player whose best days are ahead of her, Evans said. She is a strong athlete who can play both attacking and defending roles, and it will be up to her to show us the tenacity that will help us where needed. Junior captain Meghan Topolewski will lead a young midfield for the Rockets in Topolewski has started 17 of 36 matches in two seasons at Toledo while blossoming into a respected team leader because of her consistent level of effort. A year ago, she appeared in all 21 matches and tallied three points (one goal, one assist). Meghan is a player who outsiders might not notice as a significant contributor because she s not flashy, Evans said. She provides a high level of toughness for us both in the tackle and in the air, and is a pit bull for us. She ll tackle and do the dirty work. That s an important asset to have, but she has to be able to do it for 90 minutes. Complementing Topolewski in the midfield will be senior Ashley Ross (Crystal Lake, IL) and junior Alexis Tice (Palatine, IL), as well as sophomores Megan Connor (Lodi, OH) and Geri Si- udzinski (Toledo, OH). The lone senior in the Rockets midfield, Ross has played in 64 matches in three seasons at Toledo. In 2012, she appeared in all 21 matches off the bench and saw at least 35 minutes of match action on three occasions. Ross possesses the ability to cross the ball with both feet, making her well-suited for the outside midfield position. Ashley is becoming more consistent with her individual defending

15 2013 Season Outlook and that will help the entire team become more effective defensively, Evans said. She has played many roles in her first three years, and she created several opportunities for herself to score this spring while playing outside midfield. Tice became the first Rocket ever to earn allleague honors as a freshman two years ago, as she was named second-team All-MAC. Last season, she ALEXIS TICE missed the first five contests while rehabilitating from an ankle injury and struggled to regain her form. Now a junior, Tice s role within the team will be defined by her health this fall. We saw glimpses of the form that made her an all-conference selection her freshman year this spring, Evans said. Despite the setbacks, I m confident Alexis will come through this well. We will be a better team with a healthy Alexis on it. Siudzinski appeared in 20 matches and made three starts in her rookie campaign last fall. She is clean on the ball and can deliver a variety of passes, both short and long with accuracy. Once Geri committed to becoming the best player she could be this spring, it became obvious she has a bright future, Evans said. She can have a critical role if she continues to develop her fitness and improves the speed with which she processes information on the field. Connor is another sophomore the Rockets will count on to receive more match action this fall. As a freshman, she appeared in every contest and started each of the final seven matches. She possesses excellent control of the ball and can wiggle in and out of tight spaces. Meghan s development was consistent throughout the fall and spring as she continued to learn and apply the things the coaches asked her to consider, Evans said. Because of her strong distribution, I have asked her to demand more of the ball and increase her pace of play. Redshirt fresh- Isabella Echeverri (Medellin, Columbia) must sit out the 2013 fall campaign as a result of initial NCAA eligiblity rules. Echeverri, a second-semester freshman, will become eligible to compete at the conclusion of the fall fllgrading period. id Echeverri was a member of the U-20 Colombia National Team that finished fourth at the 2012 South American Championship, along with current Rocket Angelica Hernandez. She also guided the State Team to a State League championship as a team captain in DEFENDERS If the Rockets are to challenge for a MAC title this fall, they will need better production from their defense. In 2012, Toledo ranked 10th in goals-against average, having conceded 27 goals in 21 matches. After losing several key contributors from last season s back line, Evans will ask a group of upperclassmen to turn around Toledo s defensive unit. Juniors Kirsten Catloth (Saginaw, MI) and Rio James (Brownsburg, IN) are two returnees with match experience, having played in all 21 contests last season. Catloth appeared in the starting 11 on 16 occasions in 2012, including each of Toledo s final 14 matches. She saw at least 75 minutes of match action 11 times and played every minute on five occasions. Now a junior, Catloth has a chance to become a permanent fixture in Toledo s starting lineup. Kirsten has the chance to cement a spot on the left side of the back line with a good showing in the preseason, Evans said. She has really started to blossom into the player I recruited, displaying outstanding athleticism and a competitive drive that brings out the best in her intelligence and soccer abilities. James started 13 matches last season and has made 44 appearances in her two seasons as a Rocket, but all of her playing time has come as a forward. She made the transition to defense during the spring and has proved to be a quick study. Rio reads the game well and communicates effectively, Evans said. She also sees the game well, but I think when she moves further up the field sometimes her mind gets congested and sometimes her decision-making suffers. When she plays in the back, her decision making is clear and her communication of what she sees is very good. Senior Becky Rhodes is a tri-captain who has played in just 10 matches in three seasons, including seven appearances off the bench in 2012, while battling health issues. When on the pitch, Rhodes is very strong in the air, but is continuing to understand her role as a center back. Becky is a tremendous asset to our team for a variety of reasons, Evans said. Off the field, she is a strong leader because of her KIRSTEN CATLOTH unwavering commitment to the program. Becky

16 2013 Season Outlook continues to battle health issues but refuses to allow that to deter her from her mission of putting team first. Junior Brooke Lawler (St. Clair Shores, MI) is the least experienced of Toledo s projected starters on the back line, having started five of 15 matches in her first two seasons. Evans believes that Lawler s athleticism and heart will be assets to the 2013 team. Brooke continues to grow as a soccer player, Evans said. Technically, she has made strides in her ability in the air and her distribution. She is still learning to play with a level of calmness and composure that will allow her to receive more game action. Also expected to be key factors on defense will be freshman Chelsea Thompson (Madison Heights, MI) and Hannah O Shaughnessy (Powell, OH). Thompson was a four-year starter at Lamphere High School. She totaled seven goals with 10 assists (24 points) as a junior captain, earning second-team all-state, first-team all-district, first-team all-league, first-team academic all-conference and second-team All-County Dream Team recognition, according to the Oakland Press. Thompson also played four years for the Michigan Football Club ( ) on the club level and was a member of the 2009 and 13 State Cup Champions, State Cup finalist each of those four years, 2011 MRL Premier League Champions and 2012 Region II Championship semifinalist. Chelsea is a quick defender who is strong with the ball at her feet, not to mention incredibly intelligent, Evans said. She has the pace to track down players and will also be asked to help build attacks from the back when possible. How soon Chelsea integrates into our defending group will determine her playing time this fall. O Shaughnessy, who will also miss the fall season with a knee injury, performed a key role in helping Ohio Premier ECNL to the U-18 National BECKY RHODES Championship in 2013 before her ailment, along with fellow Rockets newcomer Maletic. She was also part of the Eagles squad that captured the Ohio South State Cup in 2007, 2009 and After tearing her ACL this spring, it will be Hannah s goal to rehab aggressively and intelligently so she is ready to make her mark next spring, Evans said. She is a hardworking player who wins her battles. Senior Molly Cantwell (Columbus, OH) is expected to miss the 2013 campaign with a knee injury. Cantwell has been hampered by numerous knee ailments throughout her collegiate career, limiting her to only 19 appearances over the last three seasons. Molly is a respected leader on team despite missing so much time due to injuries, Evans said. She has grown in so many wonderful BROOKE LAWLER ways during her time at UT and her perspective and love of program will serve as inspiration for many. GOALKEEP- ERS One of the biggest question marks surrounding Toledo this fall will be at goalkeeper, as it s still unclear as to who will get the nod between the posts. The Rockets went with a mixed approach in 2012, as senior Kelsey Borowitz (Cincinnati, OH) and sophomore Sam Tiongson (Carmel, IN) both received significant playing time, but neither distinguished themselves enough to cement the starting role. Our team will be the beneficiary of the competition for playing time among the goalkeepers, Evans said. Borowitz is the more seasoned netminder, starting 15 of 16 matches last fall, and 16 of 19 contests in her career. In 2012, she posted a ledger with a 1.38 GAA and 3.0 shutouts in a teamhigh 1,238:18 minutes in goal, finishing 10th in the MAC in GAA and tied for 10th in blankings. The Cincinnati native recorded at least five saves on three occasions during the year, including a career-high six stops against Eastern Michigan. Kelsey had a great spring and committed herself to showcasing her shot-stopping abilities, Evans said. I m confident we will see her best this fall. Kelsey has been sharp and focused at training throughout the spring, and that kind of senior leadership will help our goalkeeping make great strides. Tiongson drew the start in six of 10 contests a season ago, tallying a record with a 0.99 GAA and 1.0 shutouts. She totaled 728:28 in goal and posted a.742 save percentage, sitting fourth in the league in GAA. The second-year Rocket finished with a season-best four saves on three occasions. Sam s fitness and dedication to improving her footwork paid off this spring, and she has improved her coverage when called upon as a shot-stopper, Evans said. Since I recruited her, Sam s had a good game presence. She stands up well under pressure and comes up

17 2013 Season Outlook with big saves. Redshirt freshman Caitlin Mc- Comish (White- house, OH) also gives the Rockets depth between the posts, and could potentially enter the mix for playing time. She is healthy after sitting out the 2012 campaign with a hip injury. Caitlin has been extremely focused on developing the fundamental aspects of her game and it has paid off in wonderful ways, Evans said. While there is still much to be done, she has softened her hands, improved her diving technique and shown better decision making in terms of her angle play. SCHEDULE Toledo will compete in 19 matches over the course of the 2013 regular season, highlighted by home contests against 2012 NCAA Championships participants Kentucky and Pepperdine. The Rockets will entertain the Southeastern Conference (SEC) member Wildcats in their home opener (Sept. 1) and the West Coast Conference participant Waves (Sept. 8). UT is an impressive (.753) at Scott Park since the start of the 2005 campaign. I m delighted about the standard of competition we ve chosen to face, Evans said. I m also proud we have an outstanding competitive tradition coupled with a first-rate field surface that gives us the opportunity to play these challenging home matches. The Rockets will open their regular season on the road with a pair of contests at the Gopher Tournament in Minneapolis (Aug. 23 & 25). UT will play host Big Ten member Minnesota in its season opener, before competing against Ohio Valley Conference participant Belmont two days later. This fall will mark the third-consecutive year the Midnight Blue & Gold will begin their fall schedule KELSEY BOROWITZ versus a Big Ten team. One week later, UT will travel to Horizon League member Youngstown State (Aug. 30) before commencing its home slate against UK. Last fall, the Wildcats collected the program s first-ever NCAA Championships win in a 1-0 triumph over UT Martin in overtime. Toledo will then return to the road dfor a match against Atlantic Coast Conference member Pittsburgh (Sept. 6) prior to tackling a season-long fourmatch homestand against Pepperdine, Missouri Valley Conference member Indiana State (Sept. 20), Atlantic 10 participant Dayton (Sept. 22) and Western Michigan (Sept. 27) in its conference opener. We have a tremendously ambitious non-conference schedule that will challenge every member of our program to raise their standards as we strive to reach our collective potential, Evans said. We will need to continue to develop and improve, and the foundation for that growth is already present. The leadership from our upperclassmen has been and will be vital to our team s success. Our goals remain a constant, and that is to be in position to compete for championships and this schedule will certainly test and prepare us for MAC play. As part of Toledo s 11-match league slate, the SAM TIONGSON Midnight Blue & Gold will square off against WMU in its conference opener for the seventh time in the last nine seasons. Two days after the match with the Broncos, UT will make the short trip to Ypsilanti to take on Eastern Michigan (Sept. 29). Toledo will then host Buffalo (Oct. 4) and Akron (Oct. 6), before starting a season-long, four-match road swing that includes 2012 NCAA Championships participant Central Michigan (Oct. 11), arch-rival Bowling Green (Oct. 13), Ball State (Oct. 18) and reigning MAC regular-season and tourney champion Miami (Oct. 20). Following the two-week road swing, UT will host Ohio (Oct. 25) and Kent State (Oct. 27), before wrapping up the MAC regular season against Northern Illinois (Oct. 31) away from Scott Park. The 2013 MAC Tournament begins Nov. 3 with quarterfinal-round action at the sites of the four highest-seeded teams. The four survivors from that round will head to the site of the highest remaining seed for the semifinals (Nov. 8) and championship contest (Nov. 10), which the Rockets have hosted four of the last seven seasons. The winner of the 17th-annual post-season event receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. Top to bottom this is an exceptionally strong schedule and one that I simply can t wait to attack, Evans said. We know we will have to be incredibly focused on doing the little things well if we re going to have a great season, but I m confident the commitment and motivation is there from everyone associated with our program.

The Bogota, Colombia native became the first member of the program to earn Academic All-America accolades. Gaitan s inclusion on the prestigious team should come as no surprise, as she graduated with a 3.94 cumulative grade-point average in business. The 2012 first-team Academic All-District selection was a three-time Academic All-MAC honoree and a member of UT s Dean s List the last eight semesters, including a perfect 4.0 GPA in Fall 2012 and Fall In 2011, she was named third-team National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Scholar All-America. 20 2012 Season in Review Junior Rachel MacLeod totaled a team-high 13 points (five goals, three assists) in most by a Rocket in a single season, helping Kravitz earn second-team All- MAC accolades. The 2012 tri-captain started 66 of 86 contests in her UT career, appearing in the starting lineup in each of the last 60 contests. IMPROVEMENT IN TOLEDO S DEFENSE WAS KEY IN 2012 A driving force why the Rockets advanced to the semifinals of the 2012 MAC Tournament for a league-record seventh-consecutive season was the performance of their defense. UT allowed one goal or less in nine matches against league opponents and 13 contests overall. The group of senior Natalia Gaitàn, senior Megan Blake, senior Jaimie Morsillo, senior Rachael Kravitz, sophomore Kirsten Catloth and sophomore Brooke Lawler improved as the season went along and did a good job protecting the goal. Overall, Toledo finished tied for seventh in the league in shutouts (5) and 10th in goals allowed (27) and goals-against average (1.24). In league matches, UT was tied for seventh in blankings (3), eighth in GAA (1.15) and tied for eighth in goals surrendered (13). TIONGSON & BOROWITZ MAKES THEIR MARKS BETWEEN POSTS IN 2012 Freshman Sam Tiongson (2-4-1 record) and junior Kelsey Borowitz (5-8-1 mark) shared time between the posts in Tiongson saw action in 728:28 minutes, allowing eight goals (0.99 GAA) while making 23 saves. The Carmel, IN native started six matches in her first season donning the Midnight Blue & Gold, including the final three contests. She made a season-high four saves on three occasions against Loyola (IL) (Aug. 31), Illinois State (Sept. 16) and Eastern Michigan (Oct. 28) in the opening round of the MAC Tournament. Borowitz accumulated 1,238:18 minutes in goal, giving up 19 scores (1.38 GAA) with 43 stops. The Cincinnati, OH native started 15 of 16 matches and totaled a season-high six stops vs. Eastern Michigan (Sept. 23). Tiongson finished fourth in the MAC in GAA, while Borowitz was 10th in GAA and tied for 10th in shutouts (3). ELEVATION OF PLAY IN MID- FIELD WAS SIGNIFICANT IN 2012 The area of play that probably came the furthest from the beginning of the 2012 campaign to the end was in the midfield. UT received outstanding efforts from senior Kristen Mattei, sophomore Meghan Topolewski, sophomore Alexis Tice, freshman Megan Connor and freshman Geri Siudzinski, helping the Rockets advance to the semifinals of the MAC Tournament for a leaguerecord seventh-consecutive season. This goup did a good job maintaining possession of the ball in the middle of the pitch, winning 50/50 balls in the air, and applying a great deal of pressure when on defense. They were a physical group and wreaked havoc on the opposition. Toledo finished third in the MAC in corner kicks (91), sixth in goals (21), seventh in shots (246), tied for seventh in total points (55) and tied for ninth in assists (13). In MAC matches, UT improved those numbers and ranked third in corner kicks (55), tied for fifth in tallies (14), sixth in total points (37), seventh in shots (131) and tied for seventh in helpers (9). Leading the way offensively at Senior Kristen Mattei earned a spot on the MAC s All-Tournament Team by leading Toledo to its league-record seventh-consecutive appearance in the semifinals.

21 2012 Season in Review the top of the circle was junior Rachel MacLeod, who totaled a team-high 13 points (five goals, three assists). The 2011 MAC Offensive Player of the Year battled an assortment of injuries for a majority of the fall and was superb in the attack over the last seven matches of the season. MacLeod totaled two goals with one assist and averaged 3.4 shots during this stretch. The Westerville, OH native currently ranks tied for fourth in school history in career assists (14), sixth in points (56) and shots (149) and seventh in goals (21). MacLeod also sits second in Toledo annals in total points (31, 2011), tied for third in goals (11, 2011) and assists (9, 2011) and tied for fourth in shots (64, 2011) in the single-season record book. The Rockets posted a 3.58 overall GPA during the academic year to rank sixth among Division I programs, according to a release by the NSCAA.
