Newsletter Edition 10 Feb 2015 News in brief Umpiring success Congratulations to Leanne and Sam on achieving their England Netball C Award in umpiring and Lois for achieving the England Netball Beginners Award in umpiring. Kit Don't forget we now have a full range of kit available including training tops, bags, track suit bottoms and coats along with the hoodies and zoodies that we have always offered. All can be easily ordered online at and will be delivered to training so there are no postage costs. Tying the knot Congratulations to Justine and Mike, who got engaged on New Years Eve in New York! They are tying the knot later this year. England Netball Goalden Globes Following on from the club s success at the Oxfordshire Netball Awards and England Netball South Region Goalden Globes, ten club members travelled to Sheffield in September for the England Netball Goalden Globes awards. The club were very proud to have been nominated in three of the award categories having made it to the top eight in the country. The nominations were: Club of the Year; Young Volunteer of the Year Leanne; Mary Bulloch Administrator Award - Sarah. Whilst we did not bring any awards home it was a huge achievement and privilege to have been nominated alongside such worthy people. The awards ceremony held at Sheffield City Hall was sensational and provided us with the opportunity to hear about the amazing things that go on in netball around the country and talk to some of the current England players. Payment of training subs Remember those attending senior training are now able to pay their training subs by standing order direct into the club bank account. This will only cover training due to volatility around matches and need for cash to pay umpires. For further information on how to pay into the club bank account, contact Emma. Oxfordshire Sports Partnership Awards November saw the club finishing as runner up in the Oxfordshire Sports Partnership Awards Club of the Year for the second year running, and Lois finishing runner up in the Young Volunteer of the Year for the coaching and umpiring she does at the club. The awards were presented at a ceremony held at the Kassam stadium in Oxford and saw us compete against all sports clubs within Oxfordshire. It was a great achievement to be recognised on both counts at this level, well done and thank you to all those that have helped us achieve this recognition.
End of season captain reports summer 2014 Diamonds The night before the first match Diamonds were all set, Sam had bought enough sweets to last for the entire season and the kit bag was making itself comfortable in the boot of my car. Then we all received an from Laura staying she had broken her arm. The panic of 'what will we do?' ran through my mind. After a bumpy start, we lost Leanne to an ankle injury but that still didn't get our heads down. We fought long and hard and pulled out some amazing play. We smashed NOA and we beat Oxford Royals, with Debi and Nicki playing some lovely netball in defence and attack. Unfortunately, we couldn't keep winning throughout the summer and we let our hearts drop against Didcot Galaxies where we lost 17-42, not one of our best performances! By Amy Overall, I am really pleased with the effort of some of the younger players in the club stepping up to the mark. Yaz, Lindsay and Alice have shown true dedication and passion towards netball and have blossomed as players. Diamonds ended up winning 5 matches, losing 4 and finishing 6th in the league. As always, my aim at the start is to win the league, however after watching play from Brize and Didcot I changed our aim to winning more matches than losing, and this is what we accomplished. I would like to say a thank you to Becky, Natalie and Sue for helping us out when we were a bit tight on the ground. Finally, my player of the summer league is Debi, who showed true aspiration in defence and is a role model on and off court. So, once again I would like to say a huge well done to every player who put their blood, sweat and heart into netball over the summer. Emeralds This summer saw a merge of the former tornadoes players who secured a promotion in the winter league from DV5 to DV4 with some players from the former Storms team. With a large squad it meant that there were different formations each week which the squad embraced and did their best. It was a fun summer with lots of laughter on court and many players having the opportunity to support the Rubies team. We finished in the middle of the league table and given the majority of players had taken up promotion this was excellent. When we did lose a match it was by less the 8 in the score. I enjoyed being the captain and thank you to Janine, vice captain, Sarah and many others who helped making my job easier. By Justine Rubies Other than myself, Rubies were a team of new, returning and under 16 players who joined seniors to gain experience prior to playing in the winter league. Throughout the season we had a lot of changes on a weekly basis, as many players were taking their GCSE s, so each week we had to borrow a couple of players from Emeralds to fill the gaps and often play out of position, as well as acting as vice-captain. Despite all of this Rubies had a fantastic season, winning 8 out of our 9 games, including one game which was cancelled by the other team. The game which we lost would ve been a draw had we had 3 more seconds of play. We finished the season winning the league with 42 points, scoring 265 goals and only allowing 138 in. By Hannah It has been a pleasure to captain such a great team and I have thoroughly enjoyed playing with Rubies this season, and loved the enthusiasm shown by all. I would like to thank all the parents and other club members who came up regularly to watch and support us and wish everyone good luck for the season ahead as many players will be moving to different teams in the winter or returning to juniors netball.
Senior Netball Winter League update The Winter League is now well underway and the cold weather it brings has started to kick in. We have entered three teams this season and welcome a number of players that have moved up from U16 netball into all three of the squads. Tornadoes have taken up the promotion from last season and have made a very successful start to the season in Division 4. They have welcomed a number of new players and are currently 4th in the league which having only gained promotion this year is a great achievement. Cyclones is a new squad for this season entering Division 3. It is a combination of experienced players and players that are stepping up to work with the experienced players to develop their netball. To date the squad has been very successful and are currently lying 3rd in the league. The Hurricanes squad is a mixture of some old and some new faces with a number of players moving up from Storms and U16s. Due to injuries Hurricanes have needed to borrow players from Cyclones however with their help are currently at the top of Division 2. Many thanks to all of those that have helped out. At Christmas squads were reviewed and one player has moved from Cyclones to Hurricanes to ensure squads have enough players for the matches. We have also asked other players to play up as and when required to try and ensure that all squads can put teams out and that everyone gets the opportunity to play. The first weeks of the league have not been the best with a few players picking up injuries however captains are working together to ensure that we are able to fulfil our fixtures. Many thanks to the captains who work very hard to get us all organised and good luck for a good and injury free rest of the season Club Tour to Bournemouth On the 14th 16th of November, 10 club members ventured to Bournemouth for a weekend of fun playing netball. The tournament started off with Julie being struck by a nasty cold and unfortunately being too ill to play in the matches, leaving just 9 players to rotate in to the matches and Julie to provide much needed support from the side line. The team was a mixture of players from all levels and therefore developing teamwork was key to doing well in the tournament. On Saturday in the Group stages we won some and lost some, progressing to the Plate competition on the Sunday. The team the enjoyed an afternoon of shopping and a meal out before getting back to play on Sunday. On Sunday despite finishing 2 nd in our Group we narrowly missed out on the Plate semi-finals. It was a great weekend and if anyone is interested in attended the 2015 tour then get in touch with Becky for further information. Clockwise from top left: Hannah, Emma, Janine, Becky, Justine, Amy, Natalie, Sarah, Julie and Jess.
Give something back The club are involved in planning an event for May / June time to raise money for two charities that are close to the hearts of some of the club members. This is likely to take the form of a tournament followed by an evening event. More details will follow but if you are interested in getting involved and helping organise the event then please get in touch with Becky our Social Secretary. Putting Wallingford Netball Club on the map With the club now offering 6.5 hours of coaching a week from Year 3 upwards the coaches and committee work very hard to ensure it all runs smoothly but that is not where the clubs volunteers efforts end. A number of our members are regularly helping other clubs with umpiring and running clubs within schools. We now also have representation on the Oxfordshire Junior Netball League (OJNL) committee with Nicki as Vice Chair and Sam and Leanne as committee members. As part of her role, Nicki is responsible for representing the OJNL on the Oxfordshire Netball Development Board (ONDB). Becky has also this season taken up the role of results secretary for the Oxfordshire Netball League. These appointments and the awards success over the last 18 months are certainly putting the club on the map in Oxfordshire Netball! Junior Netball Update High 5 year 3 & 4 This season has seen the introduction of a new age group, and what a success it has been! We started with just 10 players, and now have 24. Our coaches, Lois & Karen, have put a lot of hard work into introducing netball to our youngest ever club members. The aim of this age group, is to get new players (especially those who don t play at school), to understand the basics of the game and to have the confidence to try new things. Both Karen and Lois have been delighted by this group s progress, and the enthusiasm that the youngsters bring with them is infectious! Three players in this age group have already participated in High 5 matches this season, showing a confidence beyond their years. A big well done to Lucy S, Charlotte T and Izzy M! As confidence grows in the rest of the group then they will also be encouraged to have the opportunity to play matches. High 5 year 5 & 6 As with year 3 & 4, the year 5 & 6 group has grown dramatically this season. So much so that we put 4 teams into the friendly league matches played in Oxford. The coaches, Leanne and Sam, supported by Julie and Lois have been doing some excellent work on Friday evenings. They are developing some skilled young players who are growing in confidence and ability. We sent 7 players for trials with a new development in Oxfordshire called Matrix. Very much working along the county structure, they are looking for young talented players to develop for the future. This is something that we want to help the girls achieve in the future and will be looking to help them develop the skills required to gain places in Academies all levels. The girls have all been positively encouraged to play in matches. However, some weeks we have really struggled to get teams out. Those that have participated win or lose, have thoroughly benefitted from playing in matches. They are not highly competitive, but it gives the coaches an idea of what the girls are capable of away from training. It also allows them to play at Central Venue in Oxford, where all of the older girls and our senior teams play as well. It is an experience, and having been there for all but one of the matches, the girls love the opportunities. Some are yet to have their first win, but at this age it s about participating, learning and having fun! A number of the girls have also helped out at U12 matches as well, playing the 7 a-side game. A big thank you, and well done to Sophie R, Holly P, Chloe P, Amy M, Flo C and Ella G.
U12 A lot of this season s U12 players have been with us for a year or 2 already. And this is the year when they start to play full 7 a-side netball. As with the previous age group, Leanne and Sam are the coaches being assisted by Julie and Lois most weeks. Having participated in the tournament at the start of the season to establish which division they are placed in, we were delighted to have one team in Division 1 and one in Division 2. The rules at league level changed this season and as such we had to name the teams for each squad, and notify when players were playing up or down teams. These options are very restricted, so selection was key to ensure that the squads were manageable. Again some weeks it has been difficult to get teams out. We have had to call on High 5 players on a regular basis to ensure that we don t concede any matches. This has been due to injuries, as well as other commitments that players and parents have on Sunday mornings. There have been some good performances this season so far. We have also seen U12 s play up to help U14 s when they are short, these include Georgie W, Mia K, Josie H, Beth D and Gracie B. U14 The U14 s have had a very tough season so far as a whole. We started with 40 U14 s, and had to split some of the older girls to train with the U16 s due to court number limitations. This has proved difficult as they are not always training with the girls they play in a team with. It has affected team bonding, and therefore performances. As with U12 we had to select players for squads, and we chose to select on ability of players. We had 4 level 2 coaches watch the players for the first 3 weeks of training to select teams, and it was not an easy process. The first half of the season saw just 2 wins and one draw from 16 games across all 3 teams. With what were considered to be poor results by players and some parents, a number of players chose to stop playing and on top of this we had a run of injuries. This meant we were left with just 21 players available to cover the 3 teams that are in the league. From January we had to re-sort squads, and had a whole review of how we selected. We looked at positions and selected on ability in those positions. Some players inevitably moved teams (both up and down), but again this proved difficult. We have seen a slight improvement in results, but we have a long way to go. The U12 s have been a tremendous help during this period with a number of players playing up so we could fulfil the fixtures. U16 We have seen a mixed bag of results from the U16 s this season. With 22 players available, and with the same restrictions as we have in the younger age groups, we have found it difficult to fulfil fixtures. With players having so many other commitments we have already conceded 2 matches this season for the Cyclones team. It a shame as there is potential for the team to do well, but with so few available on a regular basis, it is difficult to get a regular side out. Kara G from U14 s has played twice already this season for Cyclones, and 5 Twisters have played back to back games to ensure that we didn t concede anymore. Twisters have fulfilled all of their fixtures, even though the squad has been reduced to just 8 players at present. They were 3rd at the half way point of the season, which was better than we had expected. Division 1 for the U16 league is a high standard and the top 4 teams are playing an exceptional level of netball. Umpiring As a club we are very keen to help junior umpires develop, and get qualifications. A number of juniors will umpire during training and have helped at school tournaments this season. During High 5 training Georgie W and Mia K (both U12 s) have been coming down to practice before they train themselves. Esme T (U14) has also been down every week for High 5 to help the coaches, do warm ups and also practice her umpiring. Ellie T, Freya W and Yaz L (U16 s) have been umpiring on High 5 match days and will be progressing to U12 s in the next couple of months. Special mention though has to go to Georgie W who at the tender age of just 11 umpired her first matches at central venue for High 5 s. Not just that but her partner was the OJNL Chair, who was so impressed with Georgie s confidence that she has said she can continue to umpire High 5!
Junior Achievements Ellie T & Naomi L have had their places in next seasons U16 County squad confirmed. I cannot tell you the amount of work that both girls have put in the last few months to achieve this. The club are exceptionally proud of them, and we have had a glowing report from the Academy coaches too, confirming their dedication and hard work has paid off. Flo C was accepted into Matrix U11 Academy. This is a new incentive in Oxfordshire, and Flo is a year young going into this. An excellent achievement! This winter season has seen, Caiti M, Yas L, and Ellie T play for the senior sides also. It s our aim as a club to give young players the opportunities to play at a higher level as and when they are ready. It helps with their development and confidence knowing that they have the ability to play at that level. The may be nervous to start with, but within 5 minutes they are showing us all why they have been asked to play up! Coach corner Your Friday night coaches/administrators are: Leanne, Sam, Lois, Karen, Julie, Hannah and Ellie. Monday night coaches/administrators are: Nicki, Leanne, Lois, Bethan, Lauren and Hannah. We are a dedicated team of volunteers providing over 45 hours a week of coaching, team management, umpiring, mentoring and support for our young players. This time does not include planning or meetings. Within the group there are 5 x level 2 coaches and 3 x level 1 coaches. One is currently doing her level 2, and another booked to do level 1. We have 2 x C Award umpires, one beginner qualified and 2 beginner trainee umpires. Why do we do it? We do it because we have a passion for our sport and want to give girls and young women the opportunity to participate. None of us currently have children in the age groups we are coaching. We all have full time jobs, and time is precious, especially our free time. When training is over, and match days are finished, we have our bit of free time. Please can you support this by ensuring that your daughter is collected on time, so that the coaches don t have to wait for parents to turn up. If you have queries regarding your daughter s netball, please feel free to (but not text or phone), you may not get an answer straight away, but we will respond.
