2 THE COACHES MIKE TOMLIN was named the 16th head coach in Pittsburgh Steelers history on Jan. 22, Hired at the age of 34, Tomlin became only the third head coach hired by the Steelers since Tomlin became the youngest head coach in NFL history to both coach in and win a Super Bowl when he led the Steelers to a victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII. By winning the Super Bowl in only his second season as a head coach, he also became the fastest to win a Super Bowl title in Steelers history. Tomlin is one of only seven coaches in league history to win a Super Bowl within his first two seasons as an NFL head coach. Tomlin has compiled a record in the regular season during his four-year head coaching career. His.661 winning percentage in his first four seasons is second-best in team history. In 2010, Tomlin became only the second Steelers head coach to win at least 10 games in three of his first four seasons. In 2009, the Steelers offense ranked seventh in the NFL (ninth passing, 19 th rushing) and became the first unit in team history to boast a 4,000-yard passer, two 1,000-yard receivers and a 1,000- yard rusher in the same season. Pittsburgh s defense ranked fifth in the NFL (third vs. run, 16 th vs. pass) while leading the AFC and finishing one shy of the NFL lead with 47 quarterback sacks. The Steelers continued to be dominant at Heinz Field under Tomlin in Pittsburgh finished with a 6-2 home record in 2009 after finishing 7-1 (2007) and 6-2 (2008) at home during Tomlin s first two seasons. Tomlin s 23-8 record and.742 winning percentage at home after three-plus seasons ranks second in Steelers history. The Steelers defense was dominant under Tomlin s guidance in 2008, leading the NFL in total defense (237.2), pass defense (156.9), points per game (13.9), total yards per play (3.9), rushing yards per attempt (3.3), passing yards per attempt (4.7) and third down efficiency (31.4), and finished second in league rushing defense (80.3). Tomlin became only the second Steelers head coach to win his first three games. During 2007, the Steelers became just the fifth team in NFL history to win their first four home games by at least 20 points. Tomlin led the Steelers to a 10-6 record in 2007, and became just the second coach in team history to post a winning record, win a division title and earn a playoff berth in his inaugural season. Tomlin was the NFL s second-youngest head coach in 2007, and he became only the second Steelers coach in team history to win at least 10 games during his first year at the helm. The Steelers posted a 7-1 record at home in 2007 and were 5-1 in the AFC North (3-0 at home). Tomlin was a three-year starter at wide receiver at William and Mary ( ) and finished his career with 101 receptions for 2,046 yards and a school-record 20 TD catches. A first-team All- Yankee Conference selection in 1994, he established a school record with a 20.2 yards-per-catch average. JOHN FOX is in his ninth season as head coach of the Carolina Panthers and has compiled a regular-season record and a 5-3 postseason record. In Fox s first season as head coach in 2002, the Panthers were coming off a one-win season that included 15 consecutive losses and responded with a six-game improvement to go 7-9. A year later, Carolina struggled through a three-game losing streak after jumping off to an 8-2 start, but Fox steadied the ship and the Panthers advanced to Super Bowl XXXVIII after winning the NFC South title. Pittsburgh leads the all-time series against New York The Steelers fell to 6-1 against the Jets at home. Pittsburgh fell to 2-2 on the year against opponents in the AFC East. The Steelers fell to all-time at home. Pittsburgh fell to all-time at Heinz Field. WR Brad Smith returned the opening kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown to give the Jets a 7-0 lead. The Steelers tied the game at 7-7 midway through the second quarter as QB Ben Roethlisberger tossed a nine-yard touchdown to TE Matt Spaeth to cap a 16-play, 96-yard drive, the longest drive allowed by the Jets this season. It was Spaeth s first touchdown of the year. K Nick Folk booted a 25-yard field goal with 2:48 remaining in the first half to give New York a 10-7 lead. K Shaun Suisham booted a 42-yard field goal with 33 seconds to go in the second quarter to tie the game at It marked Suisham s 15th straight field goal made between yards. 4 Pittsburgh Individual Notes: QB Ben Roethlisberger Finished 23-of-44 for 264 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions (78.2 passer rating). Tossed a nine-yard touchdown to TE Matt Spaeth midway through the second quarter. Had two rushes for 25 yards (12.5 avg.), including a 22-yarder. RB Rashard Mendenhall Finished with a game-high 100 yards rushing on 17 carries (5.9 avg.) with one touchdown. Posted his fourth 100-yard rushing game of the season and seventh of his career. Scored from two yards out in the third quarter, his 10th rushing touchdown of the season. He is just the fifth Steelers running back in team history to have 10-plus rushing touchdowns in a single season. His two-yard rushing touchdown gives him six rushing touchdowns in seven home games this year. The Steelers look for their fourth straight win against the Carolina Panthers. The Steelers hope to clinch the AFC North Division title with a win over the Carolina Panthers and a loss by Baltimore Ravens to the Cleveland Browns. PITTSBURGH INDIVIDUAL NOTES WR Mike Wallace Needs one 100-yard receiving game to give him six on the year, which would be the second-most (tied) in team history with Yancey Thigpen (1997). Needs five receiving touchdowns to break the team s single-season record, which is 12 held by Hines Ward (2002), Louis Lipps (1985) and Buddy Dial (1961). LB James Harrison Needs 1.5 sacks to reach 50 for his career and become just the seventh player in team history to total at least 50 career sacks.
