The Lobo Ski Team SKIING for the University of New Mexico involves a balance between top level collegiate racing, earning high grades and working toward a college degree. At the University of New Mexico, ski racing and education combine perfectly, allowing athletes to both race fast and study hard. At the start of school both the Nordic and Alpine teams work into training gradually as the athletes get settled in for the school year. The team takes a waterskiing trip to get to know one another and have some fun together. The teams begin building up to a full training schedule the second week of school. For both teams this means general conditioning, like long distance running, mountain biking, weightlifting and high-paced games of soccer or floor hockey. A few weekends every fall the ski team gets away as a group to do some training and escape the routine of school. They take mountain biking trips to places like Moab, Utah, and hiking trips in the Grand Canyon, or other places of natural beauty and challenging terrain. These trips are for fun, education and training. The team is always able to get in some big days of biking, hiking and adventure. After less than a month at school the teams kick the training up a notch. The Nordic team adds more intensity and boosts the amount of its training, while the Alpine team starts hitting the weight room with regularity, working on speed, balance and agility. In Albuquerque the mornings are cool and perfect for running in the steep rolling terrain of the sand dunes just south of campus or around the volcanoes west of town. The Nordic team is increasing its workouts, including fast double-polling on rollerskis along the Rio Grande, or rollerskiing up in the mountains just east of town. In early October, when the evenings gain a chill that suggests snow is near, the training program takes on an even more ski specific quality. The Alpine team builds on the power and speed training it has been doing all fall. The team runs gates in the sand hills and works on balance and agility on a ropes course. Soon, the weight room sessions take on an excited feeling of anticipation for the upcoming season. The Nordic team does pole bounding intervals in the grassy, rolling terrain, and the rollerski sessions in the canyons get longer and faster. Many of the cross country skiers even run some cross country races for extra training and fun. By late October some snow can be seen on the mountains to the east. It begins to stay in early November, and is consistently skiable later in the month. Here again the training schedule changes a bit for both teams. In early November the teams take their first on-snow training camp just a few hours away in northern New Mexico or southern Colorado. For the Nordic team, Thanksgiving is a famous time for training big hours. The Alpine team also uses Thanksgiving to hit the slopes with some serious intensity. After having already had one or two on-snow camps, the team takes advantage of the long break from school by having an extended training camp where the athletes can relax from their studies and really concentrate on skiing. Thanksgiving is a time to get excited about the upcoming season and put in some good training. December marks the true start of the New Mexico winter. The Nordic team continues to take short weekend training camps to complement the week's ski training on Sandia Mountain. While they concentrate on skiing long distance at low intensities they continue to do some fast running and strength training in town to maintain quickness and strength. The Alpine team also continues to do some weight room sessions to help maintain its quickness and speed. The climate of New Mexico makes for excellent snow up in the mountains with sunny skies and dry weather in town. One can ski in fine, dry New Mexico powder in the morning and play golf that afternoon in shorts. To top it off, Albuquerque boasts clean air and clear skies all winter long. Not only are the weather and climate beautiful, but both Albuquerque and the state itself are behind the team. The ski areas run their lifts early so the team can train before the mountain opens, and the Nordic trails are groomed and maintained for the team's use in a number of nearby 2

Ski Team Mission The mission of the UNM Ski Team is to provide quality opportunities for male and female students to participate in an intercollegiate ski program as a part of their academic experience at the University of New Mexico. The ski program also fulfills the role of being a source of pride in the University among students, faculty, staff, alumni and other citizens of the state, nation and world. The UNM Ski Team fulfills its mission responsibilities by: Ski Team Mission Establishing high academic and graduation standards. Providing equitable opportunities for men and women to participate in the sport of skiing. Establishing and enforcing high standards of social conduct, sportsmanship and ethics. Following all policies and procedures of the University of New Mexico, business office, athletics department and academic departments. Operating within the policies and rules of the NCAA, RMISA, FIS and all other bodies of which the university is a member. Representing the University in a manner that creates a positive image and public support for the University of New Mexico and its athletics department. Providing opportunities for student-athletes to grow and develop personally, which will enable them to become leaders and outstanding citizens in their communities and within their chosen professions. Attracting student-athletes and coaches to the program who subscribe to the principles of this mission statement and who will represent the University with the highest standards of personal and professional conduct. locations. The drive from campus to the furthest system of trails the team uses is 45 minutes. The shortest drive is 20 minutes and the average is half an hour. The Alpine team can ski 40 minutes from campus, and the team members often drive up to Santa Fe or Taos to ski some of the world s absolute best ski areas. These traveling distances are on par with other western schools, all of whom must drive up into the mountains for snow. UNM is even closer to skiing than many Eastern schools who may have to drive some distance to the nearest snow. All Western schools travel fair distances to their races and no team has a great advantage over the others with regard to distance traveled on the racing circuit. For the Alpine team the racing season consists of 20 FIS races in conjunction with the 12-race collegiate circuit. The Nordic team also complements the NCAA circuit with a number of FIS and other races through out the season. The western NCAA circuit is the strongest collegiate circuit in the country. There are Olympians, ex-national team members from many different powerful ski countries, and a number of the USA's top young racers skiing for western schools. Every race gives the athletes a chance to really test themselves. In the middle of March the NCAA season culminates with the NCAA Championships. This is where the season's work comes to fruition. The Lobos are consistently a top contender and are always striving to come out on top. This year will be no different as UNM is once again one of the powerhouses in NCAA skiing. 3

With over 170 accredited disciplines to choose from, the University of New Mexico offers something for everyone in a unique learning environment. UNM s programs in Latin American studies, laser optics, environmental studies, photography, and lithography have all earned international acclaim. Graduate programs in arts and sciences, business, education, engineering, and fine arts are also available. UNM offers several degree programs, most requiring four years for completion, that are not offered anywhere else in New Mexico. These programs include computer engineering, dental hygiene, physical therapy, nursing, pharmacy, architecture, and dance. The University College is the first home for all freshman and many transfer students. Freshmen must complete 26 hours of credit within UC before transferring to the college of their major area of study. This allows students an opportunity to adjust to college life and take a variety of courses before having to decide what degree to pursue. After completing approximately one year of college, students may begin fine tuning their academic interests in one of the following programs: the School of Architecture and Planning, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Education, College of Engineering, College of Fine Arts, Schools of Management, College of Nursing, College of Pharmacy, Division of Dental Programs, or School of Medicine. If no single college program offers what a student needs, he or she may elect to remain in University College and design an individualized Bachelor of University Studies Degree. At UNM, the Office of Academic and Student Affairs monitors the academic progress of all the university studentathletes. The academic office also aids the student-athletes in their transition from high school to college life, choosing a major and eventually career job placement. Academics Dawn Martinez Academic Advisor Dawn Martinez is in her 14th year at the University of New Mexico and her third with the UNM Athletic Advisement Office. Prior to coming to the Athletic Department Martinez worked in the Registrar s Office processing grades, assisting in overseeing residency requirements and verifying student records. She also assisted in the certification of all student-athletes at UNM. Part of Martinez duties include academic advisement for men s basketball, women s soccer and skiing. Comprehensive academic advisement and ensuring compliance with NCAA, Mountain West and university academic eligibility requirements are part of her job. Martinez graduated from UNM in 2000 with a bachelor s degree in university studies with a concentration in sociology. Dawn and her husband, Marvin, have a son, Nicholas. Members of the UNM Ski Team were honored at the Academic Awards banquet for their outstanding work in the classroom in The Lobos are committed to excellence both on the slopes and in the classroom. Junior Nordic skier Jedd Young gets in some study time during a break before practice. If you choose to ski for New Mexico you have made a choice to excel academically as well as athletically. The ski team has had a 3.5 grade-point-average, highest among all athletic teams at the University of New Mexico, for the past 18 years. This doesn t happen by accident. -Head Ski Coach George Brooks 5

George Brooks Head Coach 36th Season New Mexico ( 70) Head Coach George Brooks Good things come to those who wait. No one knows that feeling better than New Mexico s head ski coach George Brooks. For 34 years, Brooks guided Lobo skiers to All-American honors, individual titles and event titles at the NCAA Championships. However, each year the overall team championship slipped through the Lobos paws. In 1992, UNM placed second, which was the best showing at an NCAA Championship by any Lobo team. Remarkably, every year since 1982 New Mexico finished in the top-10, but every year Brooks had to watch another team take home the first place trophy. That all changed in 2004 when Brooks guided UNM to the first NCAA title in school history. Brooks is heading into his 36th year at the helm of the UNM Ski team, a tenure that has outlasted any other member of the UNM athletics department. During that time, he has worked under nine university presidents and seven athletic directors. Initially a club sport prior to 1970, the UNM Ski team has been molded into a consistently competitive and nationallyranked program. In the 35 years that Brooks has coached at New Mexico, his teams have placed in the top-10 at the NCAA Championships 22 times, including the school s first ever national title in A 56-year old native of Taos, New Mexico, home of some of the best ski areas in the world, Brooks enthusiasm for the sport of skiing spans back to his days as a varsity athlete participating for New Mexico. Since coaching at New Mexico, Brooks has coached more than 76 athletes to All- American status on over 100 different occasions. He has also coached more than 100 skiers to Academic All- American honors and all-conference awards. New Mexico has produced eight Alpine team championships (women s Slalom in 1979, 1996, and 2002, women s Giant Slalom in 1977 and men s slalom in 1996, 1997 and 2004, and men s Giant Slalom in 1998), seven Nordic team champions, six Nordic individual champions and three Alpine individual champions at the NCAA Championships. Most recently, Jennifer Delich won the 2004 women s giant slalom title while the women s Nordic Team took home the 5K Freestyle team national championship in Brooks serves on numerous national ski committees and was chosen as the coach for the United States Ski Team at the World University Games in 1983, , 1993, , and in Brooks served as chair of the United States Ski Association Collegiate Ski Committee from Brooks also served as the delegate from the United States to the Federation of International Skiing (FIS) from Brooks has recently completed his eighth year on the NCAA Rules committee, three years of which he spent as the committee s chairperson. Brooks is also a member of the New Mexico Ski Hall of Fame. Brooks earned his bachelor s degree in Political Science/History in 1970 and went on to earn his master s in Sports Physiology at UNM. Brooks is married to Debbie Dixon of Albuquerque. The couple has three children: Andrew (26), Casey (23) and Cristi (21). 13

Head Coach George Brooks Academic All-Americans There have been more than 100 Lobo skiers receive Academic All-American awards under Coach Brooks. National Titles Brooks has coached 24 nine individual national champions and 15 Alpine and Nordic team national champions during his career at UNM. All-Conference Coach Brooks has guided 127 skiers to all-conference awards in his 35 years at UNM. All-Americans There have been 128 All-American awards given to 76 different skiers, including two-time winners, 11 three-time winners and 3 four-time winners during Brooks career. Coach Brooks was a 3-time CIAL All-Conference Alpine skier at UNM from He was also a twotime team MVP in 1970 and Top-10 Finishes The Lobos have finished in the Top-10 in overall team competition 22 times under Brooks, including a fourth place finish in 2005 and a national title in U.S. Ski Team Head Coach Coach Brooks has guided the U.S. Ski 9 Team at the World University Games on 9 different occasions, including 1983, , 1993, 1995 and Career at UNM Brooks head coaching career at UNM has spanned 36 years, longer than any other member of the UNM athletics department. Academic Achievement Last season the Ski Team extended its streak to 18 years having the highest G.P.A. among all athletic teams at UNM. 14

Fredrik Landstedt Nordic Coach 9th Season New Mexico ( 91) Head Nordic Coach Fredrik Landstedt Fredrik Landstedt is in his ninth season as the Nordic coach with the Lobos. Last season, Landstedt coached the women to their third straight NCAA Nordic Freestyle title, while helping the Lobos place fourth overall at the NCAA Championships. During his tenure at UNM he has coached 15 Lobos to 25 All-American awards, two individual national championships and four team national titles. Prior to coming to UNM, Landstedt coached at the University of Colorado for three years where he won an NCAA national championship. Before moving to Colorado he coached the West Valley High School ski team in Fairbanks, Alaska, to two state team titles. Landstedt also served as an assistant coach in New Mexico prior to his move to Alaska. During his skiing days, Landstedt was a top national skier and placed in the top-10 in the U.S. National Championships eight times between Landstedt was one of the top collegiate skiers in the nation while competing at the University of New Mexico, earning All- American status after he finished fourth in the NCAA Championships in As a young ski racer in Sweden, Landstedt took three medals in the Swedish Junior Championships and finished in the top-20 in many national competitions as a senior racer. Originally from Solleftea, Sweden, Landstedt graduated from the University of New Mexico with a bachelor s degree in Economics in 1991 and an associate degree in Accounting/Bookkeeping in Landstedt is currently working on his master s degree in Business as well as coordinating a New Mexico Nordic race series and New Mexico state championships to help raise interest in Nordic skiing in New Mexico. Landstedt serves as the President of the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association. Landstedt and his wife, Brenda, have three sons, Gabriel (10), Adrian (8) and Andreas (4). The Lobo women won the freestyle team title at the NCAA Championships in 2005 for the third year in a row under Landstedt s direction. Landstedt was both an NCAA All-American and an All-RMISA Nordic skier for the Lobos from

Assistant Coaches Christian Mitter Asst. Alpine Coach 1st Season Vermont ( 00) Olof Hedberg Asst. Nordic Coach 2nd Season Mid Sweden ( 03) Christian Mitter is entering his first season of collegiate coaching as a member of the Lobo staff. Mitter is a former Austrian state team racer and coached the Styrian FIS ski team the last three years. He helped train three racers into the Austrian junior ski team, and another to the Austrian Europa-cup team. During his three years as a coach in Austria, members of his team won a pair of Austrian junior national titles to go along with a silver and bronze medal. Former Styrian ski team member, Martin Kroisleitner, was able to qualify for two World Cup slaloms during the season and had several top-15 finishes in Europa cup races. Mitter is a student at the University of Innsbruck Austria pursuing a master s degree in Business Administration. Olof Hedberg is entering his second season as an assistant Nordic coach. He graduated in 2003 from Mid Sweden University with a degree in Business and a Finance concentration. Hedberg spent the previous school year studying Medicine at the Nordic Ski Academy of Umea University. At UNM, Hedberg is a graduate student working towards an M.B.A. in Finance in the Robert O. Anderson school. In 2004, Hedberg placed 17th in the Swedish nationals, and won three state championships in the 15k, 30k and sprint. He also finished 11th overall in the Swedish Sprint Cup. As a result Hedberg was named the Best Skier in State for the season. Hedberg also received a state-award for outstanding academic performance during the last year. Hedberg brings tremendous international racing experience to the team. His skills and knowledge about technique, tactics and speed will be a great resource to the Lobo Nordic squad. 16

2006 Outlook and Profiles 17

2006 Outlook A fourth place finish at the National Championships is usually the mark of a good season for any collegiate athletic program. However, the Lobos No. 4 showing at the 2005 NCAAs was somewhat of a disappointment following their national championship in After winning the school s first NCAA title in any sport two years ago, the bar has been set higher for the Lobo Ski team, and the 2006 squad is preparing to meet the challenge. New Mexico returns 11 letterwinners from last year s squad, including six skiers who have at least one All-American trophy on their mantle and eight Lobos who have competed at the NCAA Championships. UNM also welcomes back five skiers who were a part of the 2004 championship team. George Brooks will have an experienced squad with a lot of talent in his 36 th year as New Mexico s head ski coach. He has led UNM to a top-10 finish for the last 22 years, and the 2004 NCAA team title was the first for any sport at the University of New Mexico. However, don t expect Brooks and the rest of the Lobos to be satisfied with just one. We got our first one and now we want to add to it, stated Brooks, who holds the longest tenure of any member of the UNM athletics department. Both the Alpine and Nordic teams are training and working towards a repeat performance from two years ago. Winning the title in 2004 was such a great experience for our student-athletes and Gier-Endre Rogn (10) and Dirk Grimm (24) should be the top Nordic skiers on the team in we would love to do it again. The Lobos are picked to finish third in the 2006 preseason poll compiled by Ski Racing Magazine. New Mexico is one of four teams from the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association ranked in the top-5. 38 2005 Season Review The Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association consists of seven NCAA Division I and three Division II schools. Its members include the University of Alaska-Anchorage, Boise State University, University of Colorado, University of Denver, Montana State University, University of New Mexico, University of Nevada-Reno, University of Utah, Western State College and Whitman College. Teams compete in men s and women s alpine events as well as men s and women s nordic events. The RMISA is nationally known as the toughest conference for competitive skiing in the NCAA. Last season the members of the RMISA took four of the the top-five spots in the NCAA Championships, including the University of Denver s national championship. This season the RMISA will sponsor five events that include both alpine and nordic competition. The NCAA has a total of 43 member institutions sponsoring skiing. Among these schools, 37 sponsor both men s and women s teams while one school sponsors just a men s team and five additional institutions sponsor only a women s squad. Due to the small number of total competing schools in NCAA skiing, there is only one division. The 43 member institutions that sponsor skiing are divided into three regions, including West, Central and Eastern Regions. There are two major conferences for NCAA Skiing, one each in the West and East regions. The Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association consists of 10 schools in the Western Region while the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association is made up of 10 schools in the Eastern Region. In 2005, a total of 22 teams sent representatives to the NCAA Championships in Stove, vermont. The University of Denver took home top honors. The 2006 NCAA National Championships will be hosted by the University of Denver in Stemboat Springs, Colo. 43 Lobo Traditions THE LOBO NICKNAME A number of legends have arisen over the years as to how The University of New Mexico got Lobo as its official nickname. When the university began playing football in 1892, the team was simply referred to as The University Boys or Varsities to distinguish themselves from the prep school kids. The student body, at least as early as 1917, began to seriously explore the possibilities for both a mascot and a new name for the student newspaper, which was then called simply the U.N.M. Weekly. Several names for the paper were suggested, including The Rattler, the Sand Devil, the Ki-yo-te and the Cherry and Silver. However, there was no single name that struck a responsive chord among the students and when school opened in the Fall of 1920 the U.N.M. Weekly was still there. On Sept. 22, 1920, sophomore George S. Bryan, editor of the U.N.M. Weekly and student manager of the football team, was present at a Student Council meeting for the purpose of suggesting that the University teams be given a mascot name as at that time many universities had mascot names for their teams. Bryan suggested Lobo, the Spanish word for wolf, as the nickname. The name was enthusiastically received. The Oct. 1 issue of the student paper said, The Lobo is respected for his cunning, feared for his prowess, and is the leader of the pack. It is the ideal name for the Varsity boys who go forth to battle for the glory of the school. All together now; fifteen rahs for the LOBOS. From that beginning, the Lobo nickname has remained with The University of New Mexico for over 70 years. THE LOBO MASCOT After Lobo was adopted as the school s nickname in 1920, it was not long thereafter that a real Lobo became the mascot. Bruno Dieckmann, class of 1902, and by 1920 a successful Albuquerque insurance and real estate agent, acquired the first Lobo for the University at his own expense. At the time he was treasurer of the Athletic Association and one of the most admired men in town. Elsie Ruth Chant, class of 1923, recalled, All of the girls on campus wanted to be seen with him. He was an accomplished concert violinist as well as being a successful businessman, and he was rich. He drove a Stutz Bearcat convertible around town and all of the girls would compete to get rides with him. Sometimes he had five or six girls in the car, and when he finally got married, he left broken hearts all over campus. Anyway, he either caught it himself or he paid to have a wolf captured in the Mount Taylor area. The wolf was brought into the school and a student by the name of Bowman would take it on a leash to the football practice area. Apparently, a government trapper named Jim Young caught a wolf pup on the Floyd Lee Ranch near Mount Taylor in western part of the state. The cub became the responsibility of the cheerleaders and it appeared in harness at every football game. However, in the late 20s, a child teased the wolf and the child was bitten at one of the games. UNM officials were forced to dispose of the wolf, as one historian put it, for fear other ill-bred brats might become tempted to play with the wolf and bring a damage suit. A live wolf has really never been a part of the athletics scene since. In the early 1960s a human mascot named Lobo Louie was created. A second mascot, Lobo Lucy was created in the early 1980s. Both are now members of the school s cheerleading squad. CHERRY & SILVER The most common origin of New Mexico s school colors dates back nearly 100 years. Apparently, the school colors in the early 1890s were black and gold. Ms. Harriet Jenness, a faculty member who taught drawing, delsarte (drama), penmanship and music, suggested a change in school colors because black and gold did not give a true feeling of New Mexico. She suggested the crimson evening glow of the majestic Sandia mountains to the east. The silver came from when students and faculty took picnics in the Sandias and noted the Rio Grande looked like a silver ribbon winding through the valley below. Her ideas were enthusiastically adopted by the faculty and staff. The crimson was later changed to cherry, the color of a Sandia sunset. Miss Jenness died in 1895, two years before the colors were adopted as official. From , turquoise was integrated into the official school colors, at least, for the athletics teams. The football team wore turquoise jerseys at home during those years. Cherry and silver returned as the predominant colors in THE ALMA MATER The Alma Mater (in Latin means Nourishing or Dear Mother ) was a source of contention at UNM in The original Alma Mater was set to the tune of AnnieLyle, which was an unpopular tune with the student body for a long period of time. The student body voted in a general election to change the Alma Mater and found Glee Club Director Craig Summers to oblige. Actually Mr. Summers and his father wrote the present Alma Mater three years before and called it The New Mexico Hymn. New Mexico, New Mexico We sing to honor thee. This golden haze of college days Will live in memory. This praise we sing will ever ring With truth and loyalty New Mexico, your fame we know Will last eternally. THE UNM FIGHT SONG The UNM fight Song was written in The music to the Fight Song was written by Dean Lena Clauve, who served the University for 32 years as a professor of music education and as the Dean of Women. Dr. George St. Clair, professor in the English Department, wrote the lyrics. The Fight Song was originated as a closing number to the faculty variety show sponsored by the UNM Faculty Club in Carlisle Gym in order to raise money to cancel a sizable debt incurred in publishing the Mirage (yearbook). It was reported that enough money was raised to cancel the debt and that the high class entertainment was table conversation throughout Albuquerque for weeks afterward. Hail to thee, New Mexico, Thy loyal sons are we. Marching down the field we go, Fighting for thee. RAH! RAH! RAH! Now we pledge our faith to thee, Never shall we fail. Fighting ever, yielding never. HAIL! HAIL! HAIL! 41
