Larry A. Ryle High School Men s Soccer Athlete Handbook PRE-SEASON Paper Work- Each player should submit the following forms: Physical, Insurance Affidavit, Drug and Alcohol Contract, and $35.00 participation fee. Physicals must be submitted before a player may tryout. All other forms and participation fee may be collected after final cuts. Informational Meeting- Parents and players are invited to the Spring informational meeting to meet the coaching staff, other players, and to volunteer for essential parent administrative roles. Meetings will take place at Ryle High School. The Spring meeting will review matters concerning when tryouts will take place and distribute the appropriate paperwork. We ll have a second meeting prior to the regular season and others as deemed necessary by the coaching staff. Tryouts- Players be permitted 3 full practices before he can be cut from the team. Boys soccer tryouts begin on July 20. Policy on Cuts- Each player will receive a minimum 3-day period evaluation. A coach will meet with any athlete cut from the program. A player can request a separate meeting with coaches 4 days after being cut if they choose. Communication- Please follow the Boys Soccer program via our website, twitter account, and other media outlets. All open workouts, team functions, and other information will be shared via these media outlets IN-SEASON Academic Progress/Eligibility- The Head Coach will track each of his/her athletic in regards to grades. The Athletic Director will do a weekly grade check of any athlete during their season. The KHSAA and Ryle High School mandate that each student/athlete must be passing 75% of their current class load to be eligible on a weekly basis. Ryle High School also requires students to maintain a weekly average of 78% in order to participate. Students who choose to be an aide must be passing all classes on a weekly basis to be eligible. If you have an athlete that is ineligible for one week, he/she is not permitted to play and/or practice (KHSAA Bylaw 5; Section 3; Page 8). Game Set-Up- Each team and their athletes will help the Coach with set-up and clean-up of our facility for games. FR will get the water coolers, flags, goals, sandbags, and other equipment for all home games. The assigned ball-boys for the varsity games must stay to assist in the collection of the flags, goals, sandbags, and other equipment. Bus Transportation- Although the Boys Soccer teams do not use buses for transportation often, when we do athletes are expected to ride to and from school on the bus.
Transporting Students- Parents must arrange for all transportation to and from practices and matches. Only parents with affidavits should transport athletes. Inclement Weather- It is mandatory by KHSAA that all outdoor athletic teams must stop practice or playing when thunder or lightning is noticed. Coaches will communicate via the numerous multi-media outlets. Locker Room- It is the responsibility of the athletes to make sure that they help keep our locker room clean. We share the facility with the Girls Soccer program and everyone is expected to care for the facilities. Groups of athletes may be assigned to clean the locker room as needed. Banquet/Awards Program- Each team (FR/JV/V) will have an awards program for the team. Athletes are free but parents and family will pay a fee. The date is TBD but will probably take place in November. The athletic department will also provide certificates of participation, bars, and letters for each deserving player. Individual teams must provide their own food for award banquets through fundraising. Summer Dead Period- Students may not receive coaching or training from school personnel (either salaried or non-salaried) and school facilities, uniforms, nicknames, transportation or equipment shall not be used each year in any KHSAA sanctioned sport or cheerleading squad during the period beginning with June 25, and going through July 9. School funds may not be extended in sport of interscholastic athletics in any KHSAA sanctioned sport during this period (KHSAA Bylaw 26; Section 2; Page 15) AWARDS FR/JV/V Teams recognize the individual achievements in key areas identified by the coaching staff. Awards are given to Most Improved, Top Scorer, Most Assists, Mid Fielder of the Year, Defender of the Year, Attacker of the Year, Mr. Hustle, and others as determined by the staff. Collection of Uniforms- It is the responsibility of the athlete and parents to care for and return all issued equipment and uniforms. UNIFORM REPLACEMENT POLICY Uniforms will be reviewed for safety and condition on an annual basis by the coaches. Varsity uniforms will be purchased on a need basis; usually every 3-5 years. Changes in style or fashion do not warrant purchasing new uniforms if the current uniform is still in good condition. Whenever possible, varsity uniforms will be passed down to the junior varsity, and junior varsity uniforms will be passed down to the freshman team. This will not be done if the uniforms are in poor condition or do not fit the majority of the team properly. Fundraising for uniforms will pay 100% of the new uniform costs. Boys Soccer BOOSTER Account
The Boys Soccer Booster Account provides financial support for all boys soccer activities. Fundraising and game profits help maintain the account. Parents and athletes are responsible for generating the funds. Additional information can be found in the KHSAA Handbook or can be accessed online at If you have further questions concerning athletics please see Coach Stephen Collins. My signature below verifies that I have read and understand all the policies set forth by Larry A. Ryle High School and Athletic Department. Athlete Signature Parent Signature Date Date
2015 RYLE BOYS SOCCER PLAYER/PARENT CONTRACT The following contract has been prepared so that you know what is expected of you as a member of the boys soccer team at Larry A. Ryle High School. You are expected to act like a reasonable individual, representing your team, yourself and your family. As coaches, we spend many hours teaching responsibilities on the field and feel it is equally important that you know your responsibilities off the field. Ryle Boys Soccer Rules Do not be a part of any action that will bring discredit to you, and embarrassment to your teammates at Larry A Ryle High School. Rules of COMMON SENSE must be followed, if violated; you may be suspended from play with the team. Be accountable and responsible for your actions! Coaching Philosophy Our goal at Ryle is to make sure every player is enjoying the experience as a student athlete, not just what happens on the field. We strive to create an atmosphere of team unity, fun, and development while attempting to meet the team goals. We have specific objectives at the JV and freshman level, while the players decide on team goals for varsity. It is a player driven team at the varsity level, and the players will dictate where we want to go. As coaches we just try to steer the team in that direction while doing our best to teach a technical brand of soccer. We also strive to influence our student athletes both on and off the field. Soccer is our tool to improving these young men as people. I will treat you all fairly, but I will not treat you all the same, because each of you is different. Parents Code of Conduct Parents must set the example for the players by exemplifying the highest standards of sportsmanship. Parents participate in a match by watching, cheering and supporting the efforts of all participants of the match. The game is for the players; their participation and enjoyment of the game is the most important element. Still, parents have responsibilities to the coach, to the team and to the entire Ryle boys soccer organization. 1. Parents must respect the authority of the referee and his/her assistants. They will not harass, abuse, or berate the referee during or after the match. They shall not enter the field of play without the referee or coach s permission.
2. Parents are expected to respect the coach and his assistants; they should never criticize a coach in a public manner. Likewise, parents are not permitted to coach from the sideline; let the coach do his job no matter how much you may disagree. For example, a parent may think that a player should quickly throw the ball in, but the coach may have instructed the players to play at a slower pace. 3. Parents are expected to show respect to all players. Make only positive comments. Encourage both teams, and never berate either team. Cheer in a way to reward the good play of both teams, and promote fair play. 4. Parents must not use foul or abusive language for any reason. 5. Parents have a responsibility to learn the laws of the game, and the spirit of the game. 6. Parents must demonstrate the utmost in sportsmanship and integrity; they are the role models for their children. 7. Parents should not complain to other parents about team management issues. Players are asked to refrain from this behavior as well; we should expect parents to be responsible and abide by the same rule. For team management issues, see the Conflict Management section below. Conflict Management In the event that a Ryle coach, player or parent has a conflict with another coach, player, or parent it is required that such confrontations be addressed in the appropriate manner, (with respect) and at the appropriate time (privately). Calling coaches during the day at their workplace or late at night (after 10 PM) after games/practices will not be tolerated. It is strongly recommended that if a parent or player wishes to contact a coach at an inappropriate time that it is done through a less intrusive manner, either through or text, asking the coach to call you at his convenience. The coaching staff asks that parents please use common sense in these situations, and that they do not act emotionally. Conflicts regarding team management issues (playing time, positions, etc.) should first be dealt with privately between player and coach. If this does not resolve the matter, then a meeting between player, coach, and the player s parents can be arranged at a mutually designated time. Coaches will not engage in conversations with parents regarding team management issues until the player has addressed a coach. If confronted, coaches will only encourage parents to have their player talk with a coach first. Playing on a high school soccer team is a great growing experience. Learning to be responsible and to manage conflicts alone is part of the individual development process. Two rules of thumb to keep in mind when dealing with team managements issues:
1. You would not want another parent dictating playing time for your son, so do not try to dictate their son s playing time. Remember, if you think your son should play more, that means someone else s son should play less. 2. Coaching is subjective! We understand you may not agree with everything we do, and if every parent was allowed to run the team for one week, it would be done differently each week. However, everything we do, we do in the best interests of the players, whether you agree with us or not. Players Code of Conduct Players have a responsibility to their team, coach and to Larry A. Ryle High School. They represent their team, coach, parents, school, and the community. Players must maintain a high level of sportsmanship and fair play. Players must have respect for their coach, opponents and the authority of the referee and his/her assistants. Players are expected to represent their school and team with class both on and off the field. It only takes one individual to bring negative attention to the team, so think about your teammates before partaking in something that may not be appropriate. Any player that gets into trouble due to drugs and/or alcohol will be immediately suspended from the team and is subject to dismissal. Social Media All players are welcome to participate in social media (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, etc). However players should be aware that they are representing not only themselves, but their school and the program with the comments expressed in this way. The Ryle administration does monitor student accounts and students can get in trouble for posting inappropriate comments. The coaching staff will also punish players if need be. Think about what you post for the world to see before you do it. Injury All players will report any injuries suffered while participating with the Ryle soccer team to the coaching staff and athletic trainer. Any player who is diagnosed with a concussion by the athletic trainer will be required to obtain a doctor s note to return to the field. Academics 1. Your main objective as a student athlete is academics. Our coaches and teachers will make every effort to assist you with this objective. An athlete who will not make a genuine effort to obtain academic success will struggle to remain a member of the Ryle soccer team.
2. Your guidance and counseling comes from your parents, teachers, and coaches. Follow their advice and you will have fewer academic issues. If you need help, ASK! Don t wait until it s too late! 3. Players grades will be checked at the end of the spring semester. A 78% in all classes must be obtained to be eligible for the fall season. 4. Players grades will be checked once a week during the regular season and each player must be passing at least 5 classes to be eligible to play. However, at anytime the coaching staff can suspend a player from participating with the team if a dramatic drop in grades suddenly takes place. If a player is struggling to juggle both academics and athletics during the season, athletics will be sacrificed first. 5. Attendance: On days of games or practices, players must be present at school for at least half a day in order to participate. 6. Failing Grades: Failing grades in any class are unacceptable, except for in extenuating circumstances. Any player with an F in any class will have a private meeting with a coach to determine how to bring the grade up. Players with failing grades longer than 1 week are subject to suspension until passing all classes. 7. Ineligible players must check-in to coaches during the day and/or report with coaches during practice. Practice 1. Accept coaching in the vein it is given. Listen to what is said, not how it is said. We are attempting to improve you as a player for the good of the team. If you cannot be coached, you cannot be improved. If a coach says something you interpret as personal, see that coach after practice. Coaches make mistakes too. If you feel you are not getting a fair shake, see coach. DO NOT COMPLAIN TO OTHER PLAYERS. Resolve the matter up front. Learning to be responsible is part of the growing process. 2. Players are expected to attend EVERY practice. If a player cannot attend practice, or will be late, due to unforeseen circumstances then that player is required to notify a coach in writing as soon as possible (before practice). Players who miss any practice or team event unexcused will be required to perform a 2 mile assessment (13 min for varsity, 14 min for JV/freshman) before being allowed to play in the next scheduled game. If the player does not meet the 2 mile goal he must perform a set of stadium stairs for every 30
seconds he is over. Multiple missed practices unexcused will require a 2 mile run and a set of stairs for every additional practice missed. This punishment must be done outside of normal practice hours and scheduled with a coach. 3. Players who arrive late for any reason should first see the head coach and explain why he is late, then grab a ball and dribble around the field until told to stop. Late means that you are not ready when the team starts to warm up. A good rule of thumb is: early is on time, and on time is late. 4. Each player is expected to bring his ball to practice, fully inflated. If it is a team ball and lost during training, that player should immediately let the coaching staff know. Failure to bring a ball to practice or to bring an inflated ball to practice will result in punishment. 5. Players are expected to wear appropriate practice gear (shirts, shorts, shin guards and proper shoes). Failure to bring shin guards to practice will result in punishment or exclusion from practice. 6. Foul language will not be tolerated. The first offense is an automatic and immediate punishment of 20 push ups. Persistent foul language will result in exclusion from practice. 7. The only people that can excuse you from practice are the trainer, your doctor and your coach. All absences must be approved by a coach. Any unexcused absences will result in a reduction of playing time, based on the nature of the absences and coaches discretion. 8. Players are not permitted to talk while coach is speaking. We want to see you listening! Players being disruptive during training will not be a part of practice. 10. Any player nutmegged purposely on the dribble during training will drop and do 20 push ups on the spot. 11. Practice duties (varsity only): Freshman, Sophomores, Juniors Goals, Seniors Equipment clean up at end 12. All trash must be picked up after practice. Any trash left will result in team punishment. Games 1. Arrival times are as follows: Freshman: 30 minutes before kickoff
JV: 45 minutes before kickoff Varsity: 60 minutes kickoff (dressed 45 minutes before) Note: For home games, varsity players should meet in the locker room 45 minutes prior to kickoff fully dressed. Exceptions will be made for Bluegrass State Games. 2. No player is guaranteed a specific amount of playing time and in some cases may not play at all (except for the freshman team). High school soccer is a competitive team sport! Issues with playing time should be dealt with privately at the appropriate time between player and coach. What factors into playing time? 1. Practice attendance 2. Effort, attitude, and performance in practice 3. Game performance 3. Let your captains and coaches do the talking with the officials. Be polite if an official would like to talk to you. 4. After a game, compliment your opponents and always thank the officials, whether you think they did a good job or not. 5. All players should bring all uniforms to every game. 6. All players will warm up as led by seniors. 7. Do not disrespect the game by disrespecting your team, coaches, opponents, or referees. Behavior deemed inappropriate will result in loss of playing time and/or punishment. 8. A cool down and stretch will follow every game. 9. Captains will be held responsible if trash is not picked up. 10. All players are required to wear a shirt and tie during days of district games. If a district game falls on the weekend or a day off school, players are expected to dress up the day before the game. Varsity players are required to wear team polos and nice pants (not jeans) to school during days of all other games when a shirt and tie is not worn. Failure to do so will result in a loss of playing time. Fundraising
All players are expected to assist in program wide fundraising when applicable, not only during the season, but throughout the entire school year. Banquet All players are required to attend the Ryle boys soccer banquet after the season is over. The season is not over until after the banquet! Not attending the banquet is very disrespectful to your teammates that are being recognized. Failure to attend the banquet can result in punishment for returning players the following year. Exceptions can be made due to extenuating circumstances, but every effort should be made to attend. Players who cannot cover the cost of the dinner should see a coach. Uniform Return After the last varsity game, a date will be chosen for all uniforms to be turned in at the stadium. Academic Awards All players who obtain a weighted 3.75 GPA or higher at the end of the season will receive a team academic award. An award will also be given for the player with the highest overall weighted GPA in the program. Travel Each year the varsity boys soccer team travels for an overnight trip to a destination of the coaching staff s choosing. During this trip the players are the responsibility of the coaching staff and must participate in all team related meals and activities. Players are not permitted to leave the hotel for any reason unsupervised. Players must tell the coaching staff if they are leaving with a parent for any reason. Parents: if you attend this trip, please refrain from removing your son from the team for extra meals, etc. Players are expected to meet curfew times and not be a disruption to other guests. Any violations by players will result in suspension. Team Captains All returning team captains will remain as captains. Additional captains will be chosen coaches. A final captain may be selected by the coaching staff if deemed necessary. Players are expected to treat and respect the captains like a member of the coaching staff. A captain is an extension of the coach. In return, captains are expected to treat each teammate with equal respect. A captaincy can be taken away by a coach if the responsibility is not being fulfilled. What qualities make a good captain? 1. Positively encourages his teammates at all times 2. Leads by example on and off the field 3. Emotionally disciplined 4. Mentally Strong
5. Committed to the team 6. Individual motivation to improve 7. Well respected by teammates 8. Servant leader Swing Players During the course of the season swing players may be designated by the coaching staff from the JV and FR team. A swing player is a player who has shown the ability to help varsity while also keeping JV/FR as his top priority. Swing players are chosen in the best interests of both the program and player. It is an opportunity to make important contributions to the varsity team and increase individual development against higher competition, while also maintaining an important role with JV. Swing players will be handled on a case by case situation. Uniforms Your uniform is your responsibility! If you lose a piece of your uniform you are responsible for replacing it. Your team ball is a piece of your uniform and must be accounted for at all times. Uniform numbers for varsity uniforms will be chosen as follows: 1. Returning varsity players will have the choice to keep their number from the previous year. 2. All other returning varsity players will then choose numbers. Players with most years experience on varsity will go first. Then numbers will be selected by grade (seniors first). 3. New varsity players will then choose numbers by grade. Lettering Players will receive a letter for playing varsity. Returning varsity players will receive a bar. Academic All-State Players earning an unweighted 3.25 GPA or higher during the spring semester will make the KHSAA Honorable Mention Academic All-State team. Those who earn a 3.75 or higher will make First Team. These awards will be in the form of certificates. RETURN THIS SHEET ONLY TO COACH Due by Friday, July 24th This page of the contract must be signed by both player and his parent/guardian indicating both have read this document. Only this page should then be returned to coach. The rest of the contract is for the player and his parents to keep. This page must be signed and returned before the first preseason scrimmage. Players will not be
permitted to play in any game until this page is signed and returned. A copy of this contract can also be found online on the team s website. If you have any concerns or questions prior to signing, please speak with a coach. Player: Parent/Guardian:
Raider Rulebook Welcome to a new year, new team, and new ATTITUDE. The following will be a New Standard we as a program expect all associated with, to abide and follow at all times. 1. THERE WILL BE ABSOLUTELY NO DRINKING, USAGE OF DRUGS, OR ILLEGAL SUBSTANCES OF ANY KIND!!! PUNISHMENT FOR SUCH ACTION WILL RESULT IN DISMISSAL FROM THE PROGRAM. 2. NO FIGHTING. This means physical and verbal exchanges. We are a team and should act as one. Teamwork is key to the success of the program and all involved will need to act appropriately. 3. FOUL Language will not be accepted. You will receive yellow cards during games for cursing and depending on the referee it could be a red card. We will NOT tolerate bad language during games and practices. 4. NO Cell Phones. Keep all phones at home or in car. Do Not have them out for any reason during a practice or game. 5. If you are ruled ineligible for any reason by the school, you must report this to a member of the coaching staff by the next practice or game. This will allow the coaches to make any adjustments that may be needed. Remember we are a TEAM. Not reporting your actions hurts the entire program. 6. Players are expected to be on time for all practices and games. This means all equipment on and ready to go when practice is scheduled to begin. Don t show up at 4:28 for a 4:30 practice and not have any gear on. 7. Unexcused absences will not be accepted. Please give notification to a member of the coaching staff prior to your absence when you are unable to make a practice or game for any reason. 8. During the week, if a player misses school for any reason other than a school function you will NOT be eligible to participate in practice or games on that day of your absence from school. 9. Each player is responsible for his uniform. Keep it clean and do not damage it outside of the playing field. 10. All players must be properly equipped at all times, this includes practice. No jewelry is allowed at practice or games. (necklaces, wrist bracelets, earrings, etc...) 11. Game Day Dress Code: Khaki pants and a Ryle Soccer polo shirt. There will be designated dress up games (shirt and tie with khaki or dress pants). 12. We will have MANDATORY study halls during the season. You are required to attend or loss of playing time will occur.
13. Proper sportsmanship will be expected. Only coaches and captains may speak with officials. There will be absolutely NO taunting toward other players in any fashion, this includes over the top celebration of goals. 14. All players must realize that being a part of the Ryle High School Soccer Program is a privilege, not a right. We have high expectations from all involved in the program, parents included. You represent the school and should act in the appropriate manner at all times while you are part of this program. This includes on the field, all road trips, overnight stays, and any other function outside of the soccer field. 15. Playing time: Each player has multiple opportunities throughout each week to showcase their talents to the coaching staff. This includes practices, scrimmages, and games. We as a coaching staff will determine day by day who is deserving of playing time and how much. This is one of the hardest parts of being a coach considering the depth of talent we have and the desire each player has to play and contribute to the team. We as a staff take full responsibility for our team s success and failures and our DECISIONS ON THE FIELD ARE FINAL. Any player may at anytime contact a coach and discuss playing time. 16. Each rule will be held in the highest regards and at any point to the season the coaching staff may implement additional rules as seen needed based on any events that may occur. Consequences for Rule Violations All rules should be followed and respected at all times. At any point that a rule has been violated, it will be at the discretion of the coaching staff to set forth the appropriate punishment. Punishment can range from sit-ups to running, loss of playing time to suspension and even dismissal from the program. Again, it will be up to the coaches to determine the appropriate action and may include other actions not listed above. Please sign and return next page. WORK HARD, PLAY SMART, HAVE FUN!!!!
