1 HARDWOOD REPORT Issue 1 A HARDWOOD CLUB PUBLICATION Golden Eagles Tab Tyndall Donnie Tyndall was named the 19th head coach in the history of the Southern Miss men's basketball program. He served as the Morehead State Head Basketball Coach for the last six years. Since 2006, Tyndall has amassed a overall record, including a mark in the Ohio Valley Conference. He led the Eagles to postseason play three of the past four years, advancing to the NCAA Tournament in 2009 and Morehead State Years Tyndall had his best season in The Eagles set a Morehead State record for wins, finishing They also won their second OVC Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time, upsetting powerhouse Louisville in the second round. For his efforts, Tyndall was recognized as the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) District Coach of the Year. That year's squad was led by Kenneth Faried. Under Tyndall, Faried became a two-time OVC Player of the Year, an All-American and the NCAA's all-time leading rebounder on his way to becoming the 22nd overall pick in the NBA Draft by the Denver Nuggets. Program Philosophy In addition to being competitive on the floor, Academics and Community Involvement are at the forefront of Coach Tyndall's goals for this team. While at Morehead State, he had 14 players come through the program and exhaust their eligibility. Thirteen of them graduated with their degree. Coach Tyndall is committed to making sure that every student-athlete who comes to Southern Miss leaves with a degree. The team will be heavily involved in the overall missions of the University and the city of Hattiesburg. In just his first few months here, Coach Tyndall and his staff have appeared at dozens of events for a number of causes. Prior to Morehead Prior to Morehead State, he served as an assistant coach at Iowa Central Community College ( ), head coach at St. Catharine College ( ), assistant coach at LSU ( ), and associate head coach at Idaho ( ) and Middle Tennessee State ( ). Tyndall played at Morehead State from He earned his bachelor's degree from Morehead State in 1993 and his master's degree from LSU in Tyndall has two daughters, Taylor & Grace. He was also recently engaged to Ms. Nikki Young. IN THIS ISSUE Hardwood Club Welcome Event On June 8, over 200 members of the Hardwood Club helped welcome Coach Tyndall and his family to Hattiesburg. Donnie Tyndall Basketball Camp In June, kids ages 5-17 enjoyed 4 days of basketball instruction, games, and organized play. Coach Tyndall s staff included current and former players along with his coaching staff

This was the first time members were able to get up close and personal with the new Men s Basketball Staff and their family. Despite the pouring rain, members kept packing into the pool house. Enthusiasm about the program is at an all-time high. The USM faithful spent hours telling their favorite stories about Golden Eagle past and asked questions about its future. USM Director of Broadcasting John Cox and new Head Basketball Coach Donnie Tyndall stood in the rain to address the crowd. Coach Tyndall introduced his staff and family. Then, he spoke about the team s roster, schedule, academics, and practice plans. Similar events such as these are planned for throughout the season. Participation through membership in the Hardwood Club keeps the team competitive. The support of the group through both membership and attendance at games is the foundation of the team. Registration is now open for the season. There are multiple levels of giving. Once a person becomes a member, they are given unprecedented access to the team throughout the season. During Conference USA home games, there will be a reception available to members only. In his first year at the helm of the Golden Eagles program, Donnie Tyndall s goal is to produce a highly-competitive schedule for the Golden Eagles. Southern Miss will host five nonconference contests, and will face nine schools that compiled at least 15 wins, including five that tallied at least 20. The Golden Eagles will face two BCS schools during the coming nonconference season, with road games against Georgia and Arizona. T he Golden Eagles kick off the regular season with the home opener versus the defending Sun Belt Champion Western Kentucky Hilltoppers on Saturday, November 10. WKU is coming off an impressive victory in the NCAA Tournament s First Round against Mississippi Valley State before losing to eventual National Champion UK Wildcats. The game will mark the beginning of the Donnie Tyndall era. The Golden Eagles invite you to Pack the Green House! Southern Miss wants to continue to make their home court one of the toughest environments in the country for visiting teams. In addition to Western Kentucky, their home slate features games against Denver (11/27), William Carey (12/31), UAB (1/19), Memphis (2/9), Tulane (2/13), and the rest of Conference USA. 4 Eagles Soar Internationally This summer, new Assistant Coach Jareem Dowling represented Southern Miss in Brazil at the 2012 FIBA Americas Championship. Coach Dowling is the Head Coach for the U.S. Virgin Island s Junior National Team. The team is made up of 12 players who were either born in St. Croix, St. John s, or St. Thomas. They also are eligible to play if their parents or grandparents were natives. Also representing Southern Miss at the event were incoming freshmen guard Deon Edwin and incoming Junior transfer Aaron Brown (Temple). Coach Dowling s squad played against countries such as Puerto Rico, Canada, Mexico, and Brazil. The U.S. Virgin Islands team also ran into a loaded United States squad coached by Florida s Billy Donovan and assisted by Gonzaga s Mark Few & VCU s Shaka Smart. The experience is humbling, Coach Dowling said. It s an opportunity for me to give back and teach kids how to be successful in life and basketball. My goal is to continue to develop young talent and make them better young men. The ultimate goal is to be a grassroots program for our senior team to make them better for the Olympics. Bridging the Past to the Future We had a chance to catch up with Legendary Southern Miss Coach MK Turk to get his thoughts on the new direction of Southern Miss Basketball. Moderator: What do you think about Donnie Tyndall and the job he s done so far? Coach Turk: I ve been very impressed with Coach Tyndall. He s a guy that s fitting into the community very well and that s important. Obviously his history indicates that he s an excellent coach so I think things are going to go extremely well for him and the University. Coach Tyndall and I have talked on the phone multiple times and are scheduled to have lunch here shortly. Moderator: What advice would you give Coach Tyndall? Coach Turk: I certainly don t need to be one giving him advice on how to be successful. He s figured that out already. There is no big secret on being successful at Southern Miss. First, he must have players. He and his staff s ability to recruit will be key. I m sure the fans will get behind him 100%. Moderator: What do you think about game day at the Reed Green Coliseum? Coach Turk: When the Reed Green Coliseum is packed out, it is one of the best environments in the country. It is just the right size. When we get a capacity crowd in there and the electricity is in the air, it is as good as it gets. Moderator: What are your thoughts on General Hammond and the job he s done so far? Coach Turk: I m a huge supporter of General Hammond. He s a people person. He stays in touch and keeps people aware of what s going on. He s doing so many good things in the short time he s been in charge. I think only good things are going to come with General Hammond at the head. Moderator: How do you feel about Southern Miss? Coach Turk: This is home for me. I still live here in Hattiesburg in the same house I moved into in You will see me at all of the games. I m a Golden Eagle for life.

5 2012 Donnie Tyndall Basketball Camp In June, the Men s Basketball Staff were pleased to find a line out the door of the Reed Green Coliseum. Parents and kids were there to sign up for the first ever Donnie Tyndall Basketball Camp. Coach Tyndall assembled a staff of current coaches, players, and alumni such as Torye Pelham and Saiquan Stone. The schedule each day was packed with teaching segments, contests, and games. Each day started with Coach Tyndall leading the campers in stretching exercises. Then, the kids would split into their age groups for station work. In stations, kids would receive individual instruction on a number of skill sets such as ball handling, form shooting, pivots, defensive stance, closeouts, and rebounding. Afterwards, the campers would compete in a series of contests. Later in the afternoon, teams were formed and the kids would compete in 3 on 3 half court and 5 on 5 full court scrimmages. Each day the coaches would keep track of contest & scrimmage winners and post their names in the lobby. At the end of the week, all of the winners competed on Championship Thursday in order to crown overall champions. In addition to the trophies passed out for the champions, Coach Tyndall recognized a Camper of the Day every afternoon. This award was given daily to the camper who most exemplified the attributes of a Golden Eagle. Having qualities such as being a good teammate, coachability, hustle, attitude, and respect.

The coaching staff worked closely with the Academic staff to create an environment in which their student-athletes could be more successful in the classroom. This summer, the men s basketball team achieved one of the highest team GPA s in recent memory with a In addition, 8 players were listed on the Honor Roll and one on the Dean s list.
