(AP) - Jaiquawn Jarrett was out of football at this time two years ago, wondering when - or if - he would get another chance at an NFL career. It was a sudden fall during which he went from being a second-round draft pick to an unemployed disappointment in a span of 17 months. "I just stayed focused and kept my faith in God," the New York Jets safety said Wednesday. "You go through a lot in life, but adversity only made me stronger." Fast forward two years from those darkest days, and Jarrett is enjoying the best week of his career. The Brooklyn, New York, native was selected as the AFC defensive player of the week after racking up 10 total tackles, two interceptions, a sack and a fumble recovery in the Jets' stunning victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers last Sunday. "It's an amazing feeling, just to have that accolade under your belt," Jarrett said. "But my teammates, they deserve it more than I do." Whenever New York made a big play on defense, Jarrett seemed to be right in the middle of it. And, for a team that had just three takeaways all season, Jarrett single-handedly equaled that amount in just one game. "Well, I was surprised we got an interception," a joking Rex Ryan said. "It's been a long time." It's also been a long road for Jarrett, who was a star at Temple University as a college teammate of Muhammad Wilkerson, whom the Jets drafted in the first round in New York had its eye on Jarrett in that draft, too. "I'll never forget I was like, 'You know, if we get these two kids from Temple, it's been a great draft,'" Ryan recalled. But Philadelphia snatched up Jarrett in the second round with the 54th pick. His NFL career started a bit late because of the NFL lockout, which kept players away from team facilities and working with coaches for several weeks that offseason. Jarrett played in 12 games as a rookie, including two starts, but struggled with coverages and missed tackles. After the Eagles' season-opening win over the Cleveland Browns in 2012, they cut Jarrett. He sat out the next three months until the Jets signed him to a reserve-future contract after the regular-season finale. 2 P a g e

"Unfortunately, it didn't work out for me in Philly," he said. "I'm grateful for that opportunity I had there, but I'm even more humbled and blessed for the opportunity that I have here." He played in all 16 games last season for the Jets, but was mostly a role player and special teams contributor. He also appeared to be the odd-man out in the safety rotation this summer when the Jets selected Calvin Pryor in the first round last May, but he kept impressing his coaches in practice. With Pryor struggling and being late for a few team meetings, Ryan gave Jarrett a rare start against the Steelers. The plan was to have Jarrett and Pryor rotate during the game, but Jarrett kept making plays and stayed in for every defensive snap while Pryor was relegated to just special teams duty. Ryan has also already said Jarrett will start the Jets' next game after the bye-week break at Buffalo on Nov. 23. "Sometimes it just shows, it's not the easiest thing to do to come in and play safety in this league as a rookie," Ryan said. "Even the great ones have struggled at times, so, I think giving him that opportunity, we knew the kind of player he was." Jarrett got the first full sack of his career on Pittsburgh's first possession. Wilkerson forced a fumble on the Steelers' second possession, and his old Temple teammate was there to scoop it up for the turnover. Then came the first two interceptions of his career. "All those guys really work well together and they push each other," Ryan said of his secondary, "but it was great to see that he had that kind of day." It was the first time a Jets player had three takeaways in a game since Ty Law had three interceptions against Buffalo in the 2005 regular-season finale. Jarrett also became the first NFL player with at least two interceptions, one fumble recovery and one sack in a game since Green Bay's Charles Woodson in "Yeah, my phone was kind of blowing up and my followers jumped up on Instagram and Twitter," Jarrett said with a big smile. It's also a long way from those days not too long ago when he sat, anxiously, waiting for his next call. "You always dream of it," Jarrett said. "If you speak it to existence and have a lot of faith and belief, it'll happen." NEWSDAY Mark Sanchez still has a big fan in Rex Ryan (Kimberley Martin) Newsday Rex Ryan tuned into the Monday night game just like every other football fan. And the Jets coach couldn't have been happier to see his former quarterback perform well in prime time. "Oh man, I was proud of him," Ryan said Wednesday of Mark Sanchez, who completed 20 of 37 passes for 332 yards, two touchdowns and a QB rating of for the Eagles in his first regular-season start since December P a g e

"It wasn't just his performance I was blown away with, I think the Eagles in general, that was a great team performance," he said of Philadelphia's win over Carolina. "Certainly, Mark did his part. He played extremely well." Sanchez delivered a win for the Eagles for the second straight game after starter Nick Foles broke his collarbone against the Texans. Now, the former Jet will have to again prove he's a starting-caliber quarterback when the Eagles (7-2) travel to Lambeau Field Sunday to face the Aaron Rodgers and the Packers (6-3). During a conference call Wednesday with Packers beat writers, Sanchez talked about once being the Jets franchise quarterback and how his shoulder injury during the 2013 preseason paved the way for his exit from Florham Park. "By no means do I have some sort of vendetta or anything like that," Sanchez said. "I had a great experience in New York, the good, the bad and the ugly, it was all fun. I learned a ton from it. Then I came here to Philly and took that experience, improved on some of the things I needed to clean up and built on some of the things that went well." Sanchez, who was drafted fifth overall by the Jets in 2009, also spoke about the highs and lows of playing in the New York market. "You're either the best or you're the worst," he said. "There's no in between, whether you go 8-8 or not. If you don't win the Super Bowl, then you're a bum. That's just the way it is in that market. "But you've got to understand, you've got to take everything in perspective," added Sanchez, whose Jets tenure includes back-to-back appearances in the AFC title game in his first two games and the infamous "Buttfumble" in "You've just got to keep a broad scope on things, and don't have too much perspective where you lose your competitive edge, but don't be so narrow-minded thinking that this is the end of the world if something doesn't work out." Meanwhile, the Jets are still searching for an answer at quarterback. Sanchez's replacement was Geno Smith, whom the organization (and first-year general manager John Idzik) drafted in the second round in The Jets managed to finish 8-8 last year, despite an erratic rookie season by Smith. But the young QB was benched in favor of veteran Michael Vick during the Jets' Week 8 loss to the Bills and Vick has started the next two games. But despite the Jets' 2-8 record and the ongoing questions about their quarterback position, Ryan said he was happy to see Sanchez shine on Monday night. "It was great. I know it was on his birthday and stuff like that," the coach said. "The thing about this business is it is tough. I'm happy for all my ex-players who do well, as long as they're not playing me or my brother [Rob, the Saints' defensive coordinator]." Jaiquawn Jarrett AFC Defensive Player of Week (Kimberley Martin) Newsday Jaiquawn Jarrett's cellphone hasn't stopped buzzing. 4 P a g e

Calls, text messages and Twitter alerts have come flooding in since his impressive performance against the Steelers. Even his Instagram followers have "jumped up" since Sunday, he said with a grin. But Jarrett's social media supporters -- about 10,400 on Twitter and 4,853 on Instagram -- are sure to climb now that he is the AFC's Defensive Player of the Week. "It's an amazing feeling just to have that accolade under your belt. But my teammates, they deserve it more than I do," said the unassuming safety, who had two interceptions, made 10 tackles and recorded his first full sack and fumble recovery of his career in the Jets' win. "You always dream of it," Jarrett said of his career day. "If you speak it into existence and have a lot of faith and belief, it'll happen." The 25-year-old went from bust with the Eagles to riding the bench with a new team to being the most dominant player on the field against Ben Roethlisberger, one of the league's best quarterbacks. That's why Jarrett remains levelheaded about the sudden attention and his future role in Rex Ryan's defense. He knows just how quickly NFL careers can be derailed, so he doesn't look past the next play, let alone the next game. Jarrett was a second-round pick of the Eagles in 2011, but he was released the following year. A few months later, former Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum signed Jarrett to a reserve/future contract. Now he has a chance to cement himself as a starter. "I didn't know what to expect," he said. "I came in during the lockout year. Unfortunately, it didn't work out for me in Philly and I'm grateful for the opportunity I had there. And I'm even more humbled and blessed for the opportunity that I have here. I just stayed focused and kept my faith in God. You go through a lot in life, so adversity only made me stronger." The last time Jarrett remembers having such a dominant performance was against Ball State during his Temple days. He had two interceptions and recovered a fumble in the Owls' home victory in "This is the highest honor I've had in a while," the Brooklyn native said of being named the conference Defensive Player of the Week. He's waited patiently to show the coaching staff and fans just what he can do. When given the chance last Sunday, he didn't disappoint. Jarrett, a college teammate of Jets defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson, started over first-rounder Calvin Pryor and played all 64 defensive snaps. Pryor, who was late for a meeting last week, played only 13 special-teams snaps. "Jarrett had a hot hand. Why not leave him in?" Pryor said this week. "I wouldn't have taken him out." Neither did Ryan, who said Jarrett will start against the Bills on Nov. 23 after the Jets return from their bye week. That tidbit of information was news to Jarrett, however. "I [know] now," he said, smiling. "It's going to be great. And I'll continue to prepare as I always do." Rex Ryan: Jets will play hard after bye week (Kimberley Martin) Newsday 5 P a g e

His team may be 2-8, but Rex Ryan is confident the Jets will "play our tails off" when they return from their bye week. That's a good thing, considering he'll be on the hot seat again if his team can't string together some wins. "How many do I need to win, personally? Well I need every one I can get," Ryan joked. On a serious note, Ryan reiterated that "it isn't about me." But Calvin Pace believes he and his teammates can possibly save Ryan's job if they win out. "I'm for Rex any day of the week," the outside linebacker said. "I hate to hear him take all the blame, because he doesn't play football... We can win all the games, but a lot of it is up to us." Muhammad Wilkerson has made his frustrations known regarding his recent Pro Bowl snubs. But could 2014 be his year? The defensive star (41/2 sacks, 48 tackles) currently has 91,610 votes and is second among defensive tackles behind Buffalo's Marcell Dareus (104,416). Last year, Wilkerson was listed as a defensive end and compared to 4-3 pass-rushers with much higher sack totals. And although he led the team with 101/2 sacks, he did not make the cut. Wilkerson was, however, the only Jet to be named All- Pro. Geno time? Asked if benched quarterback Geno Smith will play again before the end of the season, Ryan said, "I think Geno is going to get plenty of opportunities, whether it's this year or whenever." That doesn't sound too promising, but the coach insisted he still believes in Smith. "I think he is going to be an outstanding quarterback." Rex praises Mark Ryan said he was "proud" of Mark Sanchez, who completed 20 of 37 passes for 332 yards and two TDs for the Eagles on Monday night in his first regular-season start since December "He played extremely well," Ryan said. Cris Carter teaches Jets players some life lessons (Kimberley Martin) Newsday FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Hall of Famer Cris Carter visited the Jets on Tuesday and spoke to players for about 90 minutes. Carter, who credits Ryan's dad, Buddy, for helping him turn around his life and NFL career, said Wednesday on ESPN Radio that the meeting was prearranged and had nothing to do with the Jets' 2-8 record. Carter, a former wide receiver turned ESPN analyst, said he touched on several topics during his session with the team, including the state of the NFL, how to be a leader and the importance of accountability. "Are they going to leave the game in a better state than when they came in?" he said on air, giving a brief overview of his visit. During his time with the players, Carter said he shared a personal story about himself and the Ryan family. Then he asked the coaching staff and other members of the organization to exit the room. Said Carter: "I asked them to leave because I feel like I can accomplish a lot with the players." 6 P a g e

"Part of this game, the beauty of it is, there is a fraternity in this business," Ryan said when asked about Carter's visit. "Obviously, Cris played for my dad. We all know that, it is well-documented. It is kind of neat, the guys are out there for you. When you ask, guys will step up and they'll do these things for you. It can't be easy, I would think. "From what the players told me it was fantastic." Buddy Ryan was the coach of the Eagles when the organization drafted Carter in the fourth round of the 1987 supplemental draft. But soon after, the receiver was released because of his addiction issues. "Buddy Ryan drafted me, and he tried to grow me up in the league," Carter said during his Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremony in "What Buddy Ryan did was the best thing that ever happened for me when he cut me and told me I couldn't play for his football team. "But he told me a story. He told me the night before he went on and talked to his wife [Joanie], and he asked his wife what he should do. And his wife told him, 'Don't cut Cris Carter. He's going to do something special with his life.' "So Buddy Ryan and your lovely wife, I thank you. You're going into the Hall with me tonight." THE RECORD Jets notes: New 'fire Idzik' billboard (J.P. Pelzman) The Record November 13, New fire Idzik sign A static billboard with the words "FIRE JOHN IDZIK" was unveiled Wednesday near westbound Exit 64B on Route 80. It is the third such billboard calling for the dismissal of the Jets embattled second-year general manager. All three billboards have been funded by disgruntled fans running a website called FireJohnIdzik.com, who have solicited donations from other dissatisfied Jets supporters. The group s original goal was to raise $10,000 to fund the purchase of one billboard, but the donations have exceeded expectations, according to the website. In fact, the group tweeted at owner Woody Johnson on Wednesday, saying that they want to meet with him, and that there will be "more boards and more planes coming" if Johnson doesn t contact them. Eight days ago, a small plane trailing a banner that advocated Idzik s firing flew over the Jets practice, although the operators of the website said they were not responsible for it. Jarrett honored Third-year safety Jaiquawn Jarrett was named AFC defensive player of the week after his outstanding performance in a win over Pittsburgh. He had two interceptions, one fumble recovery and a sack. "It s a tremendous honor," Jarrett said. "I m humbled." Coach Rex Ryan indicated Jarrett will start the Jets next game, at Buffalo on Nov. 23. Jarrett was asked if he was aware of that. "I am now," he said, smiling. Briefs 7 P a g e

The Jets had their final practice of the bye week Wednesday. Ryan said he would be going to Kentucky to visit his father, former NFL coach Buddy. Ryan was asked how many wins he might need the rest of the season to retain his job. "I need every one I can get," he said with a smile. Ryan said he was "proud" of ex-jet Mark Sanchez, who led Philadelphia to a rout of Carolina on Monday night in his first start at QB for the Eagles. Percy 'at peace' with Gang Green (J.P. Pelzman) The Record November 13, FLORHAM PARK Jets players are off until Monday, which means wide receiver Percy Harvin could have returned to his native Virginia for a few days. Instead, Harvin was planning to spend the off time in New Jersey, continuing to get to know his new home. And Harvin sounded earlier this week as if he wanted to stay for a while. "I m just at peace right now," Harvin said Tuesday. "I m enjoying playing football right now. I m just loving coming into work every day with my teammates. That s what you want. You just want to be able to come in, have peace, you love your teammates, and you go from there." Harvin certainly didn t have that during a tempestuous 19 months with the Seattle Seahawks before being traded to the Jets on Oct. 17. He twice punched teammates within a seven-month span and reportedly was very unhappy with his role before the defending Super Bowl champions shipped him to the Jets for a conditional 2015 draft pick. But he seems much happier playing for the 2-8 Jets than the still-contending Seahawks, although he wouldn t directly answer a question about which team he preferred. "I enjoy coming to work," he said. "Any time you love coming to work, that s peace for me. As far as Seattle, I wish them all well. I get texts from my teammates all the time from over there. It s still all love. If those guys do go on and win the Super Bowl, I tip my hat to them. [There s] no ill will here." In three games with the Jets, Harvin has 17 receptions for 174 yards, 11 rushes for 69 yards, and is averaging 27.9 yards per kickoff return. "We feel great that he is here," coach Rex Ryan said Wednesday when asked about Harvin, "and I even asked him, How do you like the area? and he goes, Oh, it s fantastic. And he has a smile on his face, I can tell you that. I think for whatever reason I don t know, he just feels great here, and we re happy he s here." Of course, everything was wonderful between the Jets and another mercurial receiver, Santonio Holmes, in Holmes helped the Jets to their second straight appearance in the AFC title game after being acquired in a trade with Pittsburgh during the previous off-season. Holmes was in the final year of his contract and was on his best behavior. The Jets re-signed him to a five-year deal, but he became a major distraction during the 2011 season and never again produced as much on the field for the Jets, who finally released him after the 2013 season. Holmes was waived by Chicago on Tuesday. Harvin has four years left after this season on his Seattle contract, but none of the money is guaranteed. His contract is scheduled to count as $10.5 million against the salary cap next season, and it s possible the 8 P a g e

Jets would want to restructure his deal to reduce that charge. But first they will have to decide if the contented, happy player they are seeing right now will continue to be that way in the future. "I know my parents call me all the time and ask me how I m doing," Harvin said, "and they re just noticing in my voice that I m just at peace, and I m calm. I m just able to come in and play football and just not have to worry about the outside stuff. I m loving it right now. Since the trade happened, I ve been calm the whole time. It s been all peace and all good for me. The transition has been very smooth. I m hoping it stays that way." NJ ADVANCE MEDIA Here is how linebacker Calvin Pace thinks Jets can still save Rex Ryan's job (Darryl Slater) NJ Advance Media save_rex_ryans_job.html FLORHAM PARK Calvin Pace, the Jets strong-side linebacker, loves playing for coach Rex Ryan. Pace would hate to see Ryan lose his job after this season. Despite the Jets 2-8 start, Pace believes Ryan s players can still save his job, if they somehow find a way to win their final six games after the bye week. Really, Pace believes this. Or so he said Wednesday. I would like to think so, yes, Pace said when asked if he thinks it is possible for the Jets to rescue Ryan from firing. But at the end of the day, we ve just got to win the rest of the games, basically. And whatever happens after that happens. It s unfortunate that we ve dug ourselves in this hole. I m for Rex any day of the week, but Rex isn t playing. We have to handle our business, the guys in this locker room, for us to have any chance to salvage this season. I hate to hear (Ryan) take all the blame, because he doesn t play football. That s the good thing about Rex, is he takes all the bad things (on his shoulders), but the players are the ones who play, obviously. We haven t done our jobs in various games. We can win all the games (for the rest of this season), but a lot of it is up to us. It s just about not having to go out and play against an opponent and ourselves. When I say that, I mean just the mistakes we make sometimes. Pace initially said he thought the Jets could win out after they lost at New England last month, and fell to 1-6. They dropped their next two games after that. It is a major long shot that the Jets, who snapped an eight-game losing streak last week against the Steelers, would run the table and finish 8-8. Las Vegas won t even let you bet the Jets to win this year s Super Bowl anymore. The odds are just too steep. The reality for Ryan is that he almost certainly will be fired after the season. The news would be met with disappointment from Jets like Pace, 34, who joined the team in He is one of four players on this year s squad who have been with the organization for Ryan s entire tenure, which began in The others are middle linebacker David Harris, center Nick Mangold and left tackle D Brickashaw Ferguson. 9 P a g e

Jets' Rex Ryan will visit his dad, Buddy, during bye week, knowing avoiding football won't be easy (Darryl Slater) NJ Advance Media knowing_avoiding_football_wont_be_easy.html FLORHAM PARK Jets coach Rex Ryan wants his coaching staff to get away from football for a few days during this bye week. But Ryan probably won t be able to do that, entirely, because he is heading down to Kentucky to visit his father, the former NFL coach Buddy Ryan. Rex Ryan knows he can t avoid talking about football with the man who introduced him to the game. Yeah, right, like that s going to happen, he said with a chuckle Wednesday. Right now, (with) my dad s hearing, we are always going, What? What? That s basically our conversations to each other. We just draw it up on the pad. He s always blitzing the quarterback. Buddy Ryan, 83, is long removed from his days of mapping out defensive game plans in the NFL. The influential coordinator and coach hasn t worked in the league since 1995, his second and final season as the Cardinals head coach. Rex and his twin brother, Rob, were assistant coaches for those two seasons under their father. The three men reunited last November, when the Jets beat the Saints at MetLife Stadium. Rob is the Saints defensive coordinator. Buddy attended the game, sitting in a wheelchair and posing for pictures before kickoff with his sons. Buddy has battled cancer in recent years. Last September, Buddy s second wife, Joanie Ryan, the stepmother to Rex and Rob, died after a 10-year battle with Alzheimer s disease. Here in the later years of his father s life, Rex Ryan, who places a high value on family, no doubt cherishes opportunities to visit with Buddy, like this week. Rex Ryan decided to hold two bye week practices this week, on Tuesday and Wednesday, before excusing his players. In the past, he has excused them after watching the previous game s film on Monday. But the Jets got off to a terrible start this year. But now that the Jets are done practicing, and the coaching staff has finished its self-scouting duties, Ryan is letting his assistants take off for a little while, too. Plus, Ryan said it helps that the Jets are playing an opponent after the bye that they have already faced, the Bills. The Jets coaches already have their upcoming practices scripted, Ryan said. The team will reconvene Monday. I want them to get a few days away, Ryan said of his assistant coaches. And I am going to get away myself. In the home stretch of a 2-8 season that probably will be his last as the Jets coach, Ryan knows that taking his mind off football in the coming days will be easier said than done. You re always thinking about, hey, what can I do different? Ryan said. But we ve done a lot of that up until this point. I would like to just take a couple days, to try to get away. So we ll see if we can do it. 10 P a g e

Rex Ryan acknowledges Jets likely must win out to save his job. But would even that be enough? (Darryl Slater) NJ Advance Media ave_his_job_but_would_even_that_be_enough.html FLORHAM PARK With six games remaining, the 2-8 Jets probably need to run the table in order to have any hope of saving coach Rex Ryan s job. And even that might not be enough for owner Woody Johnson to bring Ryan back for a seventh season. The Jets have their bye this week, coming off a victory over the Steelers that snapped an eight-game losing streak. As he tries to stick around for a little while longer, Ryan knows he is desperate for victories, starting with the Nov. 23 trip to Buffalo. The Jets have four road games among their final six contests this season. Well, I would like to win every one of them, Ryan said of the six-game home stretch. How many do I need to win? Well, I need every one I can get. Ryan then reverted to what he usually says when asked about his tenuous job security. You guys get tired of me saying it, but it isn t about me, Ryan told reporters. It s about us (the team). It s about what we want to do, what we want to accomplish. It isn t going to be the number of wins that we had in mind at the beginning of the season, but we have a lot of football left, and we are excited that we have that much football left. The Jets are overall (and 7-21 on the road) since making their second of two straight AFC title games after the 2010 season. They are 2-10 on the road since the start of last year, including 0-4 this season. So it would be a stunner if they won out this season by defeating Buffalo, Minnesota, Tennessee and Miami on the road, and Miami and New England at home Will 'fantastic' speech by Hall of Fame wide receiver Cris Carter spark the Jets to more wins? (Darryl Slater) NJ Advance Media ceiver_cris_carter.html FLORHAM PARK As they trudge toward the end of a season gone sour, the 2-8 Jets could probably use a pep talk, to lift their spirits. They apparently got one Tuesday afternoon, during their bye week, when Hall of Fame wide receiver Cris Carter, an ESPN analyst, spoke to the Jets players at length. Coach Rex Ryan did not offer many details about the content or tone of Carter s speech, but said it was well received. Whether it sparks them to more wins remains to be seen. I was just in there at the beginning of it, and that was enough for me, Ryan said Wednesday. He was outstanding. Then I left and let him just talk player to player. Part of this game, the beauty of it is that there s a fraternity in this business. It s kind of neat that guys are out there for you, and when you ask, guys will step up and they ll do these things for you. And it can t be easy, I would think. From what the players told me, he was fantastic. It was scheduled for an hour. I think he went an hour and a half or so. 11 P a g e

Carter has a long-standing relationship with Ryan s family. Carter spent his first three NFL seasons, , playing for the Eagles, who were coached by Ryan s father, Buddy Ryan. Carter retired after the 2002 season. The Jets occasionally host guest speakers. These visits are arranged by former Jets offensive lineman Dave Szott, who now serves as the team s director of player development. Carter was a name that we had talked about having as a guest speaker, Ryan said. The Jets players seemed pleased to visit with Carter, who even wore a green shirt for his trip to Florham Park: What happens to Calvin Pryor's playing time if Jets safety Jaiquawn Jarrett continues to shine? (Darryl Slater) NJ Advance Media ched_vs_buffalo_bills_after_being_late_to_meet.html FLORHAM PARK Rookie safety Calvin Pryor's benching will last just one game. That was the word from Jets coach Rex Ryan on Wednesday. He said Pryor will play in the Jets' next game, after the bye week, Nov. 23 at Buffalo. "Calvin is going to play," Ryan said of his first-round draft pick. "He'll definitely play." Pryor was benched for last Sunday's win over the Steelers after he was late for meetings. Ryan also said the coaching staff had admired the recent play of Jaiquawn Jarrett, who replaced Pryor in the starting lineup. Jarrett had a sack, a fumble recovery and two interceptions against the Steelers. He was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week. Ryan expects to start Jarrett again in Buffalo. But Pryor will get on the field. Against Pittsburgh, the Jets' coaches planned to rotate Pryor into the game, even though they started Jarrett over him. But they ditched that plan once they saw Jarrett excelling. With Jarrett starting and Ryan planning to play Pryor in Buffalo, just how will the Jets' coaches rotate their safeties, particularly if Jarrett continues to play well? Dawan Landry has been a mainstay at the other safety spot this season. Antonio Allen has returned to safety after struggling at cornerback. He played just three defensive snaps against the Steelers, his first game back at safety. Where does he fit in now? "I don't think there's any doubt that you can rotate guys in," Ryan said. "I can say that, because I'll have a hand in who's out there. So I would say with confidence that, yeah, all those guys will play." Pryor on Tuesday downplayed his lateness for meetings, but said he was receptive when veteran players spoke to him about it. He also said he wants to spark himself to perform better when he gets the chance to play again. 13 ping_on_his_old_twin_bed_at_home_during_bye_we.html FLORHAM PARK One by one, the Jets left their locker room Wednesday afternoon following practice, their last team activity of this bye week. Some players will stick around the area, especially if they need to rehabilitate nagging injuries, like cornerback Darrin Walls s calf. Others planned to immediately hit the road. Right tackle Breno Giacomini was heading home to Malden, Mass., just north of Boston, for a weekend with his family. My mom makes me stay at home for two nights every time I go home, he said before taking off. I ask her for lunch money, and I have to shovel out the car if it snows. Yeah, I really pretend like I m in high school. I sleep in my room in my twin bed on the floor. Wait, what? How does it work with a 6-7, 318-pound man sleeping on his old twin bed? (In case you had forgotten how small a twin bed is, it s 39 inches wide and 75 inches long. If your body is four inches longer than the length of the mattress, as Giacomini s is, that s a bit of an issue.) Giacomini explained that his twin bed at home in Malden is actually only a mattress on the floor, rather than a regular, elevated bed. So I just spread out, he said. Giacomini, 29, could certainly afford to buy a bigger bed. His contract with the Jets, signed after last season, pays him $7 million guaranteed. But there is a bit of nostalgia to staying at home, under his mom s roof, in his twin bed. It s pretty cool, he said. It kind of brings you back a while. At 6 a.m., she s asking me to shovel snow or whatever it may be, and I m like, That s fine. Just leave $20 for a pizza, and I ll be good. This weekend also serves another purpose for Giacomini. He is being inducted into Malden High School s Athletics Hall of Fame. So on Saturday, Giacomini will head over to the Loyal Order of Moose Hall in Malden and receive his honor. Jets safety Jaiquawn Jarrett named AFC Defensive Player of the Week (Dom Cosentino) NJ Advance Media _of_the_week.html Of course the Jets' first conference player of the week honors this season would go to someone in the secondary. Heading into Sunday's upset win over the Steelers, which happened because of Justin Bieber, no matter what Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger says, the Jets had intercepted just one pass and forced only three turnovers in their first nine games. But Jaiquawn Jarrett, who got his first start of the season at safety because first-round pick Calvin Pryor was late for meetings, wound up equaling that turnover total by himself in the game's first three quarters. 13 P a g e

And now the league has formally recognized Jarrett by naming him the AFC's Defensive Player of the Week, a career first. "The ball fell in our favor, and we were able to get the offense the ball, and they were able to go down there and out some points up for us," Jarrett said. "When you prepare every day, you prepare to start." Jarrett has had plenty of ups and downs in his career. He was cut after one game in 2012, just one year after the Eagles drafted him in the second round. He joined the Jets heading into last season, but later saw his playing time decrease after the team acquired veteran Ed Reed in November. "It's an amazing feeling," Jarrett said. "You know, you got through a lot of adversity, you've just got to continue to keep your faith." Head coach Rex Ryan has strongly suggested that Jarrett would start again when the Jets play their next game on Nov. 23 at the Bills. Care to get to know Jarrett a little? Click here. What did Jets' Rex Ryan think of Eagles' Mark Sanchez's outstanding game vs. Panthers? (Dom Cosentino) NJ Advance Media _for_eagles_monday_night_1.html Oh, Rex Ryan watched, all right. Ryan, the Jets' head coach, tuned in to Mark Sanchez's performance on Monday Night Football the other day, the one in which Sanchez completed 20 of 37 passes for 332 yards, two touchdowns, and a quarterback rating of in his first start for the Eagles, who routed the Panthers, "I was proud of him," said Ryan of Sanchez. "It wasn t just his performance I was blown away with. I think the Eagles in general that was a great team performance. But certainly Mark did his part. He played extremely well. Ryan and Sanchez have quite a history together, of course. The Jets traded up to draft Sanchez fifth overall in 2009, Ryan's first season in Florham Park. They then went to back-to-back AFC championship games in '09 and '10 before things began to sour in By 2012, the Jets brought in Tim Tebow, for some reason, and last year they drafted Geno Smith, who wound up supplanting Sanchez after Sanchez sustained a season-ending shoulder injury during the 2013 preseason. Last March, the Jets released Sanchez. The move needed to happen, for the sake of both sides: Sanchez turned the ball over 52 times in his last two seasons in Florham Park, and by the time he left, the Jets were on to their third offensive coordinator since he had been drafted. Sanchez would soon signed with the Eagles, and he finally got a chance to start Monday night after Nick Foles broke his collarbone the week before. But Ryan and Sanchez always had a good relationship, and Ryan signaled Wednesday that they still do. Now, the 7-2 Eagles are in first place in the NFC East heading into a showdown Sunday at the 6-3 Packers, while Ryan and the Jets are 2-8 and still searching for answers at quarterback. It was great. I know it was on his birthday and stuff like that," Ryan said. "The thing about this business, it is tough. I m happy for all my ex-players who are doing well, as long as they re not playing me or my brother [Rob, the Saints' defensive coordinator]. 14 P a g e

NEW YORK POST Jets have special guest speaker at practice (Brian Costello) New York Post The Jets had a guest speaker on Tuesday when Hall of Fame wide receiver Cris Carter visited. Carter spoke to the Jets players for about 90 minutes, coach Rex Ryan said. He was outstanding, said Ryan, who left the room after the first few minutes. I left and let him talk player to player. Part of this game, the beauty of it is there is a fraternity in this business. Obviously, Cris played for my dad. That s well-documented. It s kind of neat that guys are out there for you. When you ask, guys will step up and they ll do these things for you. It can t be easy, I would think. From what the players told me, he was fantastic. Carter, now an ESPN analyst, spent three seasons with the Eagles under Buddy Ryan, Rex s father. He struggled with substance abuse and was released by the team. He went on to become a star player for the Vikings. Ryan watched his former quarterback Mark Sanchez star for the Eagles on Monday night and said he was happy for Sanchez, the first player the Jets selected with Ryan as head coach. I was proud of him, Ryan said. It wasn t just his performance I was blown away with. I think the Eagles, in general, that was a great team performance. Certainly Mark did his part. He played extremely well. It was great. I know it was on his birthday and stuff like that. The thing about this business is it is tough. I m happy for all my ex-players that do well as long as they re not playing me or my brother. Safety Jaiquawn Jarrett won AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his big game Sunday against the Steelers. Jarrett had two interceptions, a sack, a fumble recovery and 10 tackles in the win. Jarrett will remain the starter against the Bills next week, but Ryan said Wednesday rookie Calvin Pryor will definitely play. Pryor had no defensive snaps in the Steelers game. He was benched for showing up late to a meeting last week. Muhammad Wilkerson is second in the AFC in early Pro Bowl voting at defensive tackle. He is listed at DT this year after being listed at DE last year. It might be a clearer path for him at DT as he gets away from the defensive ends that put up huge sack numbers. Ryan said he is unsure if CB Darrin Walls will be back for the Bills game. He has missed the past two games with a calf injury. Ryan had a green sweatshirt on for Sunday s win, not his trademark black sweater vest. Ryan mixed up his sideline wardrobe during the eight-game losing streak, trying to find some luck. He said the sweater vest was under the sweatshirt Sunday and he will continue to wear it. The coaches and players are off until Monday. Ryan plans on visiting his father in Kentucky during the break. Can Rex s job be saved? Need every win I can get (Brian Costello) 15 P a g e

New York Post The music blaring from the speakers as the Jets began practice was fitting. Don t worry about a thing. Cause every little thing gonna be all right, Bob Marley sang. The Jets enter their bye week at 2-8, hoping that every little thing gonna be all right. They know the playoffs are out of reach, barring a miracle, but they insist they still have something to play for. One thing I m confident in is we re going to play our tails off, Jets coach Rex Ryan said. We are going to prepare like it s a playoff game riding on it. That s the way this group will. How many wins we ll have? We ll find out. But I m confident we ll have a number of them. Ryan better hope so. It seems like a longshot the Jets can save his job this season like they did last year when they won three of their final four games. Ryan was asked if he thinks about how many wins he needs to keep his job. I need every one I can get, he said with a laugh. The Jets have winnable games remaining on the schedule. They play two teams with losing records and have their toughest opponent (the Patriots) at home. That being said, the Jets have done nothing in recent years to make you think they can go on a winning streak. They have not won three games in a row since the 2011 season and have only won two consecutive games twice over the past 2 ½ seasons. Their longest winning streak under Ryan is five in The dismal season and their lack of winning streaks has not stopped the players from believing they can salvage this season with a strong finish over the final six games. We can win all the games, linebacker Calvin Pace said. A lot of it is up to us, not having to go out and play against an opponent and ourselves. When I say that, the mistakes we make sometimes, the big plays we give up sometimes, we need to dial in and be on point every game from here on out. The Jets beat the Steelers on Sunday with their old formula of playing good defense, forcing a few turnovers and not turning the ball over on offense. The Jets have been discussing playing like that for months, but they finally saw the result of it on Sunday. I hope they see how much easier it makes it on themselves, Pace said. It really is hard to win games in the NFL, even games you re favored to win in. It makes it that much harder when you re out here doing things that s not helping your cause, whether it s turnovers or giving up big plays. With that being said, I hope they took that feeling from last Sunday and just carry it over. I m not saying it was easy, but things were a lot easier when we weren t hurting ourselves. The challenge begins next week in Buffalo. The Jets are 1-4 under Ryan after the bye week. That made him change up the team s schedule this week. Normally, he gives the players off the entire week after watching the film on Monday. This year, he had practices on Tuesday and Wednesday. Ryan told the team something a Navy Seal told him about when they take time off, they are never truly off. They are still thinking about their next mission. For them, there s not a whole lot of break, Ryan said. He talked about jumping on that fast-moving train. I ve used that illustration with our guys that when we get back we re right back into it. You ve got to be ready to handle it and not kind of work your way into it. You ve got to be ready. 16 P a g e

Misery loves company: 1996 Jets can relate to this year s debacle (Mark Cannizzaro) New York Post November 13, At face value for the Jets their current one-game winning streak notwithstanding there does not appear to be anything left to play for once they return from their bye and resume the season next week with a 2-8 record and little chance of making the playoffs for the first time since Nevertheless, there are players from a Jets team of yesteryear the 1996 edition that went 1-15 and was the last team before this one to lose eight consecutive games who disagree with that philosophy. Business-wise, those players are getting evaluated on every snap, not only by this coaching staff but the next coaching staff if they get rid of Rex [Ryan], which I hope they don t, said former Jets cornerback Ray Mickens, a member of that infamous 96 team coached by Rich Kotite. Let s just be pragmatic about it; it s very likely that Rex will not be the coach next year, so a lot of these guys are probably auditioning for their next job, said former Jets linebacker and current SNY analyst Chad Cascadden, who was in his second NFL season in Mickens recalled when that 96 team ended its eight-game slide around midseason just like these Jets did with their win over the Steelers last Sunday. We had circled Arizona on the calendar as a team we could definitely beat to get our first win, Mickens said. So we go there and win and we partied on the plane all the way home and when we got back to New York, Kotite got up in front of us Monday morning and said, Guys, we re still in this thing. I remember everyone looking around at each other and laughing, Mickens said. It was hysterical. Former Jets linebacker Marvin Jones, currently the linebackers coach for the FXFL s Brooklyn Bolts, said he sees similarities between his 96 squad and this version. At some point you have to be real and not pretend like everything is OK, because it s not, Jones said. I can remember when Kotite would say, OK, in a few weeks we ll get everybody back from injuries and we can make a run. We re like, What? We re [expletive] 1-8. People would say, You re the best 1-8 team in the league, but you know what, you re 1-8 and you have be real and say, Hey, we re not a very good team. It s not that Geno [Smith] is having a bad week, or this guy is out, or whatever. From what I ve seen and I ve been watching the games pretty closely they re not very good. I went to the Buffalo game and I was heartbroken and disappointed because the effort was wow it was bad. There is no way they should be in this position. Last year, they were a.500 team and now they re a team that lost eight in a row. I don t think people trust the management there now. The worst part of playing for a team going nowhere? There is nothing worse than playing well on a really [bad] team, Cascadden said. I would have willingly given up paychecks just to get a win just so we could feel better about ourselves and take that burden off our shoulders for just a week. Nick Lowery, the kicker on that team, said, One of the hardest things to deal with was that pervasive feeling of people waiting for someone to make a mistake and you didn t want to be the one. The hardest thing I ever went through in my life was that season. 17 P a g e
