2 Lenape Valley Basketball Coaches Clinic Objectives: 1. Teach the core fundamentals of basketball to our volunteer coaches (head and assistants). Provide LV Basketball Fundamentals Program as a reference guide. 2. Train our volunteer coaches to conduct an efficient and productive 1 hour practice session. 3. Stress that our coaches teach sportsmanship, discipline, teamwork and selfconfidence. 4. Prepare coaches to make practices/games FUN and educational for the players. ENTHUSIASM! 2

3 LENAPE VALLEY BASKETBALL FUNDAMENTALS PROGRAM FOR COACHES & PLAYERS The following is a fundamentals program that Lenape Valley Basketball endorses for all coaches and players participating in the organization. LVB feels this program is an extremely valuable tool in the development of our volunteer coaches and players. If you follow this program faithfully, you are guaranteed to become a vastly improved coach or player. The fundamentals and drills in this program are a guideline for our volunteer coaches and players. The reason why we teach the same skills each year at the clinics and encourage you to emphasize the same fundamental checkpoints in your practices is because "repetition is the best teacher". Listed below each of the fundamentals are the "checkpoints" that you should emphasize while teaching or practicing the "drills. I. Lay-ups A. Checkpoints 1. Proper angle 2. Head up 3. Dribble with outside hand 4. Where to take off from 5. High jump off inside foot.don t broad jump. 6. High on the board 7. Futures Division Option to teach Jump Stop. B. Drills 1. Right hand 2. Left hand 3. Down the middle THE PROGRAM II. Rebounding A. Checkpoints- boxing out 1. Find your person 2. Pivot to seal off 3. Hands up 4. Go after it B. Drills 1. Rebound & Outlet 2. Box out / Keep out 3. Taps - right hand (younger ages, use wall) 4. Taps left hand (younger ages, use wall) 5. Mikan Drill (hook/keep ball high) 3

4 III. Shooting A. Checkpoints BEEF (Balance, Elbow, Eyes, Follow Through) 1. Balance - feet shoulder width apart and one foot slightly in front of the other 2. Shooting Hand - Fingertips spread and ball does not touch the palm 3. Shooting Arm - Elbow in and form an "L" 4. Non-Shooting hand - Thumbs form a T and release it before it blocks your vision 5. The Shot - Pop your elbow for greater arc 6. The Follow Through -Reach for the peach with index finger and thumb being last to touch the ball 7. Use your legs for power B. Other points of emphasis 1. Always square your shoulders to the target 2. Aim over the near rim or at a spot on the backboard 3. Pivot off your inside foot 4. Make last dribble an extra hard one 5. Warm-up slowly from close in and gradually move out 6. Know your range 7. Don't dip the ball after catching pass (Note: Some of these require 1 or 2 partners) 1. Shooting off the pass - pivot off correct foot 2. "Around the Horn 3. Beat the Pro 4. Shooting off the dribble make the last one hard 5. 2 Person Rapid Fire Drill 6. Imaginary 1-on-1 Stationary moves into jump shots 7. Free Throws IV. Individual Man to Man Defense A. Checkpoints Stance 1. Feet shoulder width apart 2. Drop your backside to get lower 3. Back relatively straight 4. Palms and head up B. Checkpoints Slides 1. Don t cross feet 2. Don t hop 3. Step with foot closest to direction you are moving 4. Slide with other foot 1. Defensive slides left, right, forward and backward 2. Advance, Retreat and Open 3. Machine Gun Drill (with variations) 4. Line jumps, lane slides 5. Wave Drill (Follow the ball with hands) V. Team Defense A. If guarding the person with the ball = employ the concepts noted in Section IV (Individual Man to Man Defense Fundamental) B. If guarding the person one pass away = deny the pass C. If guarding the person more than one pass away = have at least one foot in the lane and think help defense 4

5 VI. Moves on the Move (Ball Handling) A. Checkpoints 1. Head up 2. Protect the ball 3. Be quick, but don t hurry B. Moves 1. Low driving dribble 2. High speed dribble 3. Crossover dribble 4. Stop and go 5. Spin dribble 6. Behind the back 7. Between the legs 1. Full court dribbling (with or without a defender) 2. End up with lay-up or jump shot (if basket is available) VII. Fast Break A. 2 on 1 (offense) 1. Stay wide 2. Make defense commit 3. Pass with inside hand B. 2 on 1 (defense) 1. Fake and fall 2. Don t give up a lay-up C. 3 on 2 (offense) 1. Stay wide 2. Point guard stop at foul line 3. Don t play giant steps D. 3 on 2 (defense) 1. Stop the ball 2. Back player takes first pass and top player falls back 3. Rotate to original spots on 2d pass VIII. Passing A. Checkpoints 1. Backspin 2. Roll thumbs through the ball 3. Step to pass and step to meet the pass B. Passes 1. Chest 2. Bounce 3. Overhead 4. Baseball 5. Fake up, pass down 6. Fake down, pass up 7. Behind-the-back 1. Simply work on all of the passes either with a partner or off a wall 5

6 IX. Offensive Stationary Moves A. Checkpoints 1. Always catch the ball in triple threat position 2. 6 inch jab 3. Action - reaction 4. Knife in on long step or crossover 5. Close the gap with dribble B. Moves 1. Strong side drive 2. Weak side drive 3. Jab step into jump shot 1. One on One (imaginary or live) X. Ball Handling A. Why work on this fundamental? 1. Hand-eye coordination 2. Fingertip control 3. Build up wrist and forearm strength 4. Develop off hand 5. Increase intensity 6. Improve dexterity B. Checkpoints 1. Be quick, but don t hurry 2. Start slow and gradually increase speed 3. Don t look at the ball 4. Stress fingertip control, improving your off hand, and improving hand-eye coordination 1. Pound the ball 2. Fingertip control drill 3. Pass around midsection 4. Single leg circles 5. Double leg circles 6. Corkscrew 7. Figure 8 8. Rhythm 9. Dribbling figure Crab run 11. Football hike 12. Butterfly & machine gun 14. Dribbling on knee drill 15. Dribbling sitting down 16. Dribbling laying down 17. Spinning on finger 18. One-handed M dribbles 19. Dribbling with 2 balls D. Format 1. Simply go through and do all the drills for 30 seconds 2. On some of the drills, change direction after 15 seconds 6

Checkpoints Slides 1. Don t cross feet 2. Don t hop 3. Step with closest foot to the direction you are moving 4. Slide with other foot iii. Drills 1. Defensive slides right, left, forward and back 2. Lane slides 3. Line jumps 8

9 III. Scrimmage/Play (25 minutes) a. 5 on 5, 4 on 4, 3 on 3 (depends on the number of players) b. Coaches should try to teach the rules to the younger players. c. Let the kids have fun. 9
