The Bartons and Selby are cousins. All three played a season at Lake Clifton High School in Baltimore, Md., but in different seasons. The Bartons played for the Lakers in the season and helped lead Lake Clifton to a perfect 28-0 record and the Maryland 3A state championship. Selby played for Lake Clifton in the season and averaged 32 points, seven assists and five rebounds. THEY ALL HAVE RINGS If people look at the resumes of all four head coaches in the Jimmy V Classic, they will see a similarity among the four, and that is all have won NCAA titles. Syracuse s Jim Boeheim (2003), Michigan State s Tom Izzo (2000) and Kansas Bill Self (2008) all have NCAA crowns as head coaches at their respective schools. Memphis head coach Josh Pastner earned his NCAA championship ring as a player on the 1997 Arizona squad. That Wildcat team is still the only one in NCAA Tournament history to defeat three No. 1 seeds en route to the title. YOUTH VERSUS EXPERIENCE Memphis will find itself in a lot of these matchups in , and one of those is Tuesday versus Kansas. The Tigers bring a roster with only one senior and four juniors, but two of those juniors Angel Garcia and Preston Laird have had limited playing experience. On the other bench, Kansas has combined eight players that are juniors and seniors. To take it further, the starting lineup for Memphis in its last outing included two juniors, two freshmen and one sophomore. For Kansas, its last game starters were three juniors and two seniors. TIGERS ON PEARL HARBOR DAY Memphis meets Kansas in the Jimmy V Classic on Dec. 7, which is Pearl Harbor Day. The Tigers have an 11-8 record (.579 winning percentage) when playing on Pearl Harbor Day since World War II. The Tigers dropped their last game played on Pearl Harbor Day in the campaign. Memphis fell to Pittsburgh in the Jimmy V Classic. The last time Memphis won a game on Pearl Harbor Day was in the season, and the Tigers defeated Furman at The Pyramid. PASTNER VERSUS SELF Everyone knows that Josh Pastner is facing Bill Self for the only the second time as head coaches Tuesday night. But, Pastner was a member of Lute Olson s Arizona staff when the Wildcats met Self s Illinois team in the 2001 NCAA Tournament. In , Pastner served as an undergraduate assistant coach on Olson s staff, and the Wildcats advanced all the way to the 2001 NCAA title game. En route to the championship game, Arizona defeated Self and the Fighting Illini in the Midwest Region final Ironically, Illinois beat Kansas in the TIGERS AMONG WINNINGEST PROGRAMS IN RECENT YEARS Since (through Dec. 4) 1. PASTNER VERSUS KANSAS Again, all know that Josh Pastner is matching wits against Kansas as a head coach for only the second time in his young tenure. But, he faced Kansas several times as a player, staff member and assistant coach at Arizona from In his time in Tucson, Pastner and the Wildcats played Kansas seven times, and the Jayhawks held a narrow 4-3 edge in those seven meetings. The last time a Pastner-associated Arizona squad met Kansas was in the season, and the Jayhawks posted a overtime victory in Lawrence on Nov. 25, The last Arizona win was a victory in the Maui Invitational on Nov. 21, PASTNER S MEMORABLE MOMENT VS. KANSAS Memphis head coach Josh Pastner s best memory versus Kansas is probably a night Jayhawk Nation would love to forget. As a freshman in , Pastner and his Arizona teammates got on a roll in the NCAA Tournament, and went up against the tournament s overall No. 1 seed in Kansas in the Southeast Region semifinal (Sweet Sixteen) in Birmingham, Ala. The Jayhawks were 34-1 and faced a 21-9 Arizona squad. The Wildcats pulled the upset. Arizona went on to win the 1997 NCAA title,

KANSAS The Memphis staff has two assistant coaches on staff that have faced Kansas previous to the season. Willis Wilson, who served as the head coach at Rice from , was 0-3 versus the Jayhawks from Glynn Cyprien served as an assistant on Eddie Sutton s staff at Oklahoma State from During that time, the Cowboys and Jayhawks split their six meetings (3-3). DID YOU KNOW?/PART I The Tigers 7-0 record to start the campaign is the fourth-best undefeated start to a season in the last 25 years (since ). The following shows the only four undefeated starts of 7-0 and better the last 25 seasons: Best Undefeated Starts/Last 25 Years Year Record QUICKEST TO 30 WINS With the Tigers sixth win , head coach Josh Pastner recorded the 30th victory in his short tenure at Memphis. The following lists the top-10 Tiger head coaches that won 30 games the quickest: Head Coach/Years Game # for 30th Win Larry Finch/ ; (30-9) Bob Vanatta/ ; (30-9) Josh Pastner/ ; (30-10) Gene Bartow/ ; (30-12) Dean Ehlers/ ; (30-12) Wayne Yates/ ; (30-13) John Calipari/ ; (30-18) Eugene Lambert/ ; (30-20) Dana Kirk/ ; (30-30) Moe Iba/ ; (30-34) NOVEMBER, PLEASE DON T GO... While all head coaches focus on March and their teams ready to make postseason runs, the Tigers have done quite well in the month of November. Since , Memphis has a record (.750 winning percentage) in November. One reason for the 15 early setbacks is the rugged national schedule the Tigers have played. Of the 15 November losses, 10 were to nationally-ranked teams. The Tigers are 32-6 (.842 winning percentage) in November since , with five of the six setbacks coming to ranked opponents. The following shows Memphis progress in November games since : Year Nov. Rec. Losses to Ranked Teams Totals BUT, DECEMBER HAS ALSO BEEN GOOD TO TIGERS Since the season, the Tigers have a record (.705 winning percentage) when playing in the month of December. Memphis was 5-2 last December and has won 30 of its last 36 December contests (.833 winning percentage), dating back to the season. NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS Memphis has had a long history of success in non-league games, and that has continued in recent years. Since , the Tigers have a non-conference record (including postseason) of for a 75.0 winning percentage. In , Memphis had an 11-6 record against non-conference opponents (including postseason). LET S TALK ABOUT THIS TURNOVER THING During the early portion of the season, Memphis head coach Josh Pastner has placed a point of emphasis on turnovers and how the Tigers need to cut them down. He s talked about the number of turnovers can be traced to how young the team is, and how last year s experienced squad had fewer turnovers. Well, the following shows a comparison (first seven games), and the young Tigers aren t too far off the team: Stat/1st 7 Games Total TO TO/Game TO Margin /92 Asst-to-TO 121/ Asst./TO Ratio 1.1 TIGER SUCCESS AT FEDEXFORUM After a rough first year at their new home in , the Tigers bounced back quite nicely and made FedExForum one of the toughest arenas for opponents to play in. The Tigers have a overall record (.899 winning percentage) at FedExForum. Since the 2005 Conference USA Tournament, Memphis has won 106 of its last 113 home games (.938 winning percentage). BEST HOMECOURT ADVANTAGE? Well, Memphis head coach Josh Pastner will say the Tigers have the best homecourt advantage due to the great Tiger Nation fanbase. But, he also has some numbers to back him up. Since , Memphis has won 116 games

The following are the top three programs with the most home wins since (credit to Texas A&M SID for compiling this list): Most Home Wins (Since to present) 1. Memphis also hit the century mark in its season-opening win over Centenary Memphis has scored 100 points in two games in four of the last seven seasons (including ). The last time the Tigers hit the century mark in more than two games was the campaign when Memphis had three 100-point contests. TIGERS WRAP UP FIRST GLOBAL SPORTS CHALLENGE TITLE With their 4-0 record in the exempt event, the Tigers won the first-ever Global Sport Challenge title. Memphis won the event with victories over Centenary , Northwestern State 94-79, LSU and Tennessee Martin The following were the team s records in the event: Memphis LSU Northwestern State Tennessee Martin Centenary PASTNER SEVENTH-YOUNGEST HEAD COACH IN NCAA DIVISION I IN If you ask Josh Pastner about his age, he just says it s a number. And it is. However, Pastner s age makes him one of the youngest head coaches in NCAA Division I in The following lists the youngest head coaches in NCAA Division I: Coach, School Age Birthdate Andy Toole, Robert Morris 30 Sept. 11, 1980 Jason Capel, Appalachian State 30 Jan. 15, 1980 Brian Wardle, UW-Green Bay 31 Oct. 10, 1979 Dane Fife, IPFW 31 July 26, 1979 Adam Walsh, Centenary 31 May 7, 1979 Jason James, UT Martin 33 Oct. 10, 1977 Josh Pastner, Memphis 33 Sept. 26, 1977 Bobby Washington, Grambling 33 June 1, 1977 John Gallagher, Hartford 33 May 27, 1977 Joe Pasternack, New Orleans 33 Apr. 15, 1977 DID YOU KNOW?/PART II The Tigers have the most newcomers on the team for the first time since the season. Memphis has eight newcomers on its roster (seven freshmen, one transfer) in The Tigers had 10 newcomers on their roster, and many of those were available because was the first year of freshmen eligibility. That Memphis squad advanced to the NCAA national title game. FINALLY, THERE S 4 Entering this season, head Josh Pastner talked about how young his squad was, and one of his talking points was that he had only two players on his roster with 20-point games at the NCAA Division I level. Well, add two more names to that list six games into the campaign. Freshman Will Barton became the Tigers third 20-point scorer when he netted 22 points in the Tigers win over Northwestern State Nov. 17. Then, on Nov. 23, Will Coleman put his name on that list as the fourth 20-point scorer as he poured in 20 points versus Tennessee Martin. Barton and Coleman join Wesley Witherspoon and Charles Carmouche as the only players on the roster to have a 20-point game at the NCAA Division I level. CALL HIM MR. CLUTCH Well, freshman Chris Crawford saves his best for last, or at least, for late in the game. In the Tigers two wins over Miami (Fla.) and LSU, the 6-foot-4 guard had uncharacteristic poor shooting performances until late in both contests. The Memphis, Tenn., native made huge late-game plays and the following chronicles that: LSU Nov. 21 With game tied at 57-all with four minutes left, buries a three-pointer to give Memphis a lead with 3:53 left. The trey started a 7-0 run that put the Tigers ahead for good. Blocks an LSU three-point attempt with 1:34 left, and on Tigers ensuing possession, hits another threepointer to give Memphis a lead with 1:02 left. Miami (Fla.) Nov. 15 Under with two minutes to play (1:53), hits a threepointer from the left wing to give the Tigers a lead. It was Memphis first lead since 6:49. With Memphis clinging to a lead with under a minute left, tears away a rebound from a Miami player after the Hurricanes missed a three-pointer for the lead BARTON NAMED TO NAISMITH LIST Freshman Will Barton was named as one of 50 preseason candidates for the Naismith National Player of the Year trophy on Nov. 16. The 6-foot-6 guard is one of six freshmen selected to the Naismith Trophy preseason watch list. Barton is also one of two players from Conference USA on the list, and is joined by UTEP s Randy Culpepper. KENDRICK NO LONGER WITH TIGERS HOOPS PROGRAM Last Saturday, head coach Josh Pastner announced that freshman Jelan Kendrick was no longer with the Tigers basketball program. After meeting with Jelan today, we decided it was best that we part ways, said Pastner on Saturday. We are grateful and thankful for his time with the Memphis program, and we wish him all the best. Kendrick had been out of practice from Oct. 21- Nov. 3, but made his return to the practice floor Nov. 4 following the team s first exhibition game versus LeMoyne-Owen Nov. 3. Kendrick was on the bench for the exhibition contest, but did not dress for game action. In the Nov. 9 exhibition contest, Kendrick saw his first minutes on the court when he played against Christian Brothers. The 6-foot-6 guard played 15 minutes and posted eight points, two rebounds and two assists. Prior to Kendrick s return to practice on Nov. 4, Pastner said that Kendrick was taking time away from the squad for a personal matter. TIGERS RANKED NO. 19 IN PRESEASON POLLS The preseason polls are out, and after a one-year hiatus, Memphis checked back in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Coaches Top 25 polls at No. 19. It s the sixth time in the last seven seasons the Tigers have been ranked in the preseason. The Tigers highest preseason ranking was No. 3 to start the campaign. In its history, Memphis has been ranked a total of 18 times in the preseason polls. The following are the preseason rankings for Memphis in the history of the Associated Press poll: Year Rank Year Rank # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # #11 WITHERSPOON, BARTON NAMED TO ALL- C-USA PRESEASON TEAMS In mid-october, Conference USA announced its preseason squads, and two Tigers were on the All-C-USA teams. Junior forward Wesley Witherspoon was an All-C-USA preseason first team pick, while freshman guard Will Barton was named to the league s preseason second team. Barton was the only freshman in the league to be named to either team.

Stephens did just that by totaling career highs in points (11) and rebounds (13) in a series of above-the-rim plays en route to leading the No. 14/15 Tigers to a non-conference victory over the Hilltoppers at FedExForum. Freshmen Joe Jackson (15 points) and Tarik Black (11) were the only other Tigers to finish in double digits in a game that saw Memphis commit 21 turnovers and lose the battle of the boards Western Kentucky finished with 25 offensive rebounds, which resulted in 21 secondchance points. The Tigers overcame that sloppy play by exploiting their size on the inside and forcing the Hilltoppers into 20 turnovers of their own. Memphis finished with 46 points in the paint and 20 points off the 21 Western Kentucky turnovers. The visitors were led by 16 points from Sergio Kerusch, who added eight rebounds in 29 minutes. Ken Brown (10 points) was the only other Hilltopper that finished in double figures. The Memphis defense held Juan Pattillo to just six points on 1-of-10 shooting from the floor. Pattillo came in as the Hilltoppers leading scorer at nearly 17 points per contest. Memphis took a advantage into halftime and was keyed by 11 first-half points from Jackson, who also provided what was perhaps the highlight of the season thus far with an amazing dunk over a Hilltopper. Western Kentucky, though, refused to go away, cutting the lead to single digits on two different occasions in the second half. Memphis was able to respond each time. Kerusch made it a game at the 13:06 mark on a layup before Wesley Witherspoon responded with an emphatic slam for Memphis on the other end. The Hilltoppers narrowed the deficit to nine points again seven minutes later, this time on Pattillo s only field goal at the 6:44 mark that narrowed the Tigers lead to Five straight points by Will Coleman, however, put the game out of reach, as the Tigers closed the game on a 16-9 run. Coleman and Witherspoon each finished with seven points in the contest. Black s 11 points were a career-high, and the freshman from Memphis, Tenn., also added a career-best four rejections.
