PREVIEWING THE TAR HEELS The Tar Heels return eight players who appeared in the starting lineup at least once last season and welcome Roy Williams as head coach, determined to re-establish the University of North Carolina as one of the preeminent college basketball programs in the country. Williams, a 1972 Carolina graduate and an assistant coach at UNC from , returns to his alma mater after 15 extraordinary seasons as head coach at the University of Kansas. The Asheville, N.C., native compiled a record, went to four Final Fours, including each of the last two seasons, and is a four-time national coach of the year. He leads all active coaches with a winning percentage of.805, which is third-best alltime. Last year, Carolina went with a 6-10 record in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Tar Heels won the Preseason NIT with wins over No. 2 Kansas and Stanford, and added prominent victories over No. 6 Connecticut, No. 10 Duke and No. 14 Maryland. However, UNC failed to qualify for NCAA Tournament play for the second year in a row, finished tied for sixth in the ACC and lost five consecutive league games for the third time in school history (all three times in the last two years). Carolina began the year 5-0 and was ranked as high as No. 12 in the nation. Losses to Kentucky, Illinois and Iona and a season-ending injury to center Sean May knocked the Tar Heels out of the national rankings. May scored in double figures in six of the first seven games before he injured his left foot. He broke a bone on December 27 and played just 10 minutes in one ACC Tournament game the rest of the season. The Tar Heels received a bid to the NIT and defeated DePaul and Wyoming before suffering a season-ending defeat to Georgetown. May is one of seven players who could legitimately be considered returning starters, along with point guard Raymond Felton, guard Melvin Scott, swing men Rashad McCants and Jackie Manuel, and wings David Noel and Jawad Williams. Last year s team was the youngest in school history and the youngest in major college basketball. This season, Carolina s roster does not include a senior scholarship player. It includes three senior walk-ons, three juniors, six sophomores and two freshmen, one of which is an invited walk-on. Depth and youth are still challenges awaiting Williams. I have had teams with no senior starters, but never one without a scholarship senior, says Williams. But I do think we have some good leaders on the team. I d like to say great leaders, but I haven t been around them in tough times yet to know if they are great leaders. I have been impressed with them thus far. I think it s important for them to get some of that leadership from the coaches to see how to do it and then take it another level. Prior to last season, UNC never began a game with more than two freshmen in the starting lineup. Last year, the Tar Heels started three freshmen 31 times and four freshmen in a game twice, including against Duke in the ACC Tournament. Williams says the sophomores and juniors should benefit from their extensive playing time. Junior forward JAWAD WILLIAMS is Carolina s leading active scorer and rebounder. I do consider them to have experience in one way. They do have those past games to look back on. But they are not experienced in winning and that s what we have got to get across to them. The more you win, the more you win. You learn how to win. We have to expect them to make some mistakes, but we can t allow as many mistakes as we have made in the past. Junior forward Jawad Williams led the Tar Heels in scoring in ACC games last year at 14.9 points per game and has averaged 12.6 points over his first two college seasons. The 6-8 native of Cleveland, Ohio, has worked hard in the off-season to add muscle to his slender frame, which should allow him to be more physical against more typical power forwards. Williams earned honorable mention All-ACC honors after finishing second on the team in scoring at 14.9 points per game and rebounding at 5.6 per game. He scored in double figures 28 times, including each of the last nine games. He had a careerhigh 25 points as Carolina knocked off Maryland in the ACC Tournament. Junior Jackie Manuel, a 6-5 shooting guard and small forward, is one of Carolina s best all-around athletes and defenders. The West Palm Beach, Fla., native averaged 7.3 points and 4.0

Point guard RAYMOND FELTON averaged 9.8 assists over the last six games. He became the first freshman in school histoy to win Carolina s MVP honors. rebounds as a sophomore, and typically drew the defensive assignment to stop the opponent s top perimeter scoring threat. He was second on the team with 28 blocked shots, including one against Georgia Tech with less than two seconds to play that preserved a one-point UNC victory. Manuel s stellar defensive performance against All-America Kirk Hinrichs was key to UNC s upset win over Kansas. Melvin Scott played his finest basketball late in his sophomore season, regaining the shooting touch he was known for coming out of Baltimore, Md. The 6-1 junior guard had career scoring highs in two of the last five games (20 vs. Wyoming and 19 vs. Maryland) and took excellent care of the ball. He committed just two turnovers in his last 166 minutes played and averaged 12.4 points over the last five games. The 62 points he scored in the last five games were the most he scored in any five-game span in his UNC career. Scott has made 82 three-point field goals and 53 two-point baskets as a Tar Heel. Felton, a 6-2 sophomore from Latta, S.C., should be considered one of the top point guards in the country. He was named to the Preseason Top 50 List for the John R. Wooden Award, which is given to the nation s top player. Felton was voted Carolina s Most Valuable Player, the first time a freshman has ever won the award. He earned third-team All-ACC, All-ACC Freshman and All-ACC Tournament selections and was named the ACC Freshman of the Week three times. Felton led the Tar Heels with 236 assists, a UNC freshman record. He handed out 59 assists in the last six games (9.8 per) and finished the year second in the ACC in assists at 6.74 per game. Felton also scored in double figures 25 times, including 25 or more points twice. The Tar Heels were 13-3 in games in which he had seven or more assists. He was also third in the ACC in minutes played per game behind only Clemson s Edward Scott and Duke s Chris Duhon. The responsibilities I give the point guard shows how much I need them to be experienced, says Williams. It will be a new situation for Raymond because it s a new coaching staff, but he has already seen that the game is played at a much faster pace, at a much stronger pace than he s ever had before. So that makes it a little easier for him and us. The fact that it is a whole new staff and a different brand of basketball in some areas will still be a challenge for us and in some of those areas it s going to be like Raymond s a freshman again. McCants, a 6-4 sophomore, led the Tar Heels in scoring and established a UNC freshmen record with 17.0 points per game. He was named to the All-ACC Freshman Team, was an honorable mention All-ACC choice and was the MVP at the Preseason NIT. Like Felton, McCants is a preseason Top 50 player to watch for the Wooden Award. McCants was seventh in the ACC in scoring (17.0 ppg), fourth in field goal percentage (.491) and fifth in three-point percentage (.414). He averaged 18.5 points in UNC s wins, became the first Carolina freshman to ever score in double figures in each of his first 20 games, and scored 20 or more points 12 times, more than any other UNC freshman in history. The Asheville, N.C., native scored 25 or more points in six games against Penn State, Kansas, Connecticut, Maryland, Duke and Georgetown and led UNC in offensive rebounds with 58. May, a 6-9 sophomore forward/center from Bloomington, Ind., was off to an impressive start before injuring his left foot when he was stepped on in practice in early December. Prior to the injury (the first seven games) he was averaging 15.3 points and 8.7 rebounds; over the next three games, he scored a total of 14 points and was 5 for 20 from the floor. He broke the fifth metatarsal in his left foot early in the second half of the loss to Iona on December 27 and did not play again, except for 10 minutes against Duke in the Acc Tournament. May had three double-doubles, including a 19-point, 10- rebound effort against Rutgers. He had a season-high 21 points at Illinois and 11 rebounds against Kansas. With May on the floor, the Tar Heels were 7-3 and had a slight rebounding advantage. With May on the sidelines, Carolina gave up seven points more per game and was out-rebounded by nearly eight per contest. Sean s health is a concern like everybody s, says Williams. His is more apparent because of what he went through last year. At this time, we are keeping our fingers crossed and being very positive about it. Certainly we hope it will work out. Noel, a 6-6 sophomore, had an impressive freshman season, especially considering he was a walk-on who turned down Division I football scholarships and paid his own way to attend Carolina. The Durham, N.C., native will receive a grant-in-aid beginning this year, however. Noel was one of the most dependable and consistent Tar Heels over the final two months of the season. At times his play

was sensational, even though he played out of position at center, often competing against players who were three-to-six inches taller and much heavier than he. Noel first showed glimpses of that ability to play in the post in the November NIT wins over Kansas and Stanford. He didn t score in either game, but was an important part of Carolina s success. Noel averaged 5.9 points and 3.5 rebounds, including 9.3 points and 5.5 rebounds over the last 16 games. He shot 67 for 121 (55.4 percent) from the floor in his 17 starts and finished the year 68 for 109 (.624) from the floor inside the threepoint arc. He had 21 points and 11 rebounds in the NIT against DePaul, scored 19 points at Duke and had 13 points and three steals in the home loss to NC State. He hit back-to-back threepointers in the second half of the win over Connecticut. Byron Sanders, a 6-9 center/forward, was one of five Tar Heels to play in all 35 games last year. The Gulfport, Miss., sophomore started a dozen games, most at mid-season after May went down, and gained good experience for the future. Sanders scored eight points in the win at Florida State, scored six points, including a late threepoint play in the win over UConn, and played outstanding defense against Travis Watson in the home victory over Virginia. Damion Grant, a 6-11 sophomore from Portland, Jamaica, saw limited action as a freshman due to his inexperience and a series of injuries. He played in 19 games, scored 30 points and had 28 rebounds and 15 blocked shots. Grant had tendonitis in both knees and a thumb injury, which limited his play. The only seniors on the team are a trio of non-scholarship players who have worked their way up from the junior varsity program. They include 6-6 forward Phillip McLamb from Charlotte, N.C.; 6-1 guard Jonathan Miller from Burlington, N.C.; and 5-11 guard Damien Price from Greensboro, N.C. The Tar Heels have three newcomers this year, one of which is sitting out due to NCAA transfer regulations. Wes Miller, a 5-11 guard who played at James Madison last year, will not be eligible this year. Miller averaged 17.2 minutes and 4.1 points for the Dukes. He teamed with McCants at New Hanover (N.H.) Prep. Freshmen forwards Reyshawn Terry and Justin Bohlander, both from Winston-Salem, N.C., were teammates last year at R.J. Reynolds High School. Terry was MVP of the 2002 high school state championship game. Bohlander, an invited walk-on, averaged nearly 11 points and seven rebounds as a senior. Coach Williams says the Tar Heels must work hard and play smart to improve this year. We will be a team that has to work exceptionally hard and play extremely intelligent basketball by playing unselfishly for us to reach any big-time goals, says Williams. When you go through a two-year period like we have gone through, there are a lot of negative feelings and a lot of issues that come up that when it gets to be crunch time, the players haven t been able to transfer to positive outcomes. So for us RASHAD MCCANTS led UNC in scoring and three-point shooting as a freshman. to be positive, we have to play unbelievably hard and unselfish. That will be the biggest push for the coaches in the preseason. We want to play extremely fast, if our personnel allow us to do that. What I have seen of our players, I think we have wonderful personnel to do that. At the same time, if you play very fast, you are going to have a lot of possessions, and depth becomes an issue. We don t have the greatest depth in the world so we have to find the right balance between playing fast to use our abilities, but not so fast that guys have opportunities to get in foul trouble. Carolina played to its quickness last year, although May and Noel did an outstanding job playing against bigger low post opponents. How much that situation develops again depends on how much Sanders and Grant improve in strength and their overall play this year. Grant is the only player on the roster who is at least The biggest concern we have is the number of people with tremendous size who can play effectively, says Williams. Our No. 1 basketball goal is to rebound better. They did not rebound well last year. That has to be a goal of ours from the first day of practice to the end. We don t have as many players with size and experience as we would like. But they had to play the whole year last year with, other than Will Johnson, what we have back. If you don t rebound, you don t win. Coach Williams points to the players attitude as the strength of the team. I m hoping I will be most comfortable with how hungry they are. They are tired of losing. I m hoping their attitude will be to go after it the right way. What I am going to expect and demand, hopefully just expect and not have to demand, is an unbelievable effort for our team doing better. That can make up for some of the losses in the past. Everybody has to be concerned with our team. Unreal expectations are here, there is nothing I can do about them. I know my expectations will be realistic and we will push towards building a program, not just coaching for one game. Williams acknowledges some polls have the Tar Heels back in the Top 10, but points with caution at such predictions. It s mind-boggling that someone would have us in the Top 10, says Williams. We re coming off two straight years not making the NCAA Tournament and 36 losses ol Roy ain t that good. The bottom line is we do have some marvelous potential in some of our players, but we need more of them and more of them with size. The expectations around North Carolina are always going to be high, and in some years they will be unrealistic. That s probably what we have this year unrealistic expectations.

TAR HEELS EARN POSTSEASON BID North Carolina went and reached the quarterfinals of the Owens Corning National Invitation Tournament in Along the way, the Tar Heels beat four ranked teams, won the Preseason NIT with wins over Kansas and Stanford reached the semifinals of the ACC Tournament after beating No. 2 seed Maryland. It was the first time since 1973 and 1974 the Tar Heels did not qualify for the NCAA Tournament (only one ACC team was invited in those years). CAROLINA ADVANCES TO NIT QUARTERFINALS North Carolina reached the quarterfinal round of the 2003 National Invitation Tournament before losing to Georgetown, 79-74, in the Smith Center on March 26. The Tar Heels beat DePaul (83-72) and Wyoming (90-74) in the first two rounds. UNC made its fifth appearance in the NIT and first since The Tar Heels averaged more than 15,000 fans per game at the Smith Center in the NIT, including a raucous crowd of 20,235 in the second round against Wyoming. Raymond Felton tied the alltime NIT record with 14 assists against Wyoming. That was the record for UNC freshman and was the third time in NIT history a player had 14 assists in a game. FOUR WINS OVER RANKED TEAMS Carolina s victory over No. 14 Maryland in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals was UNC s fourth over a ranked team. No ACC team had more wins against ranked opponents. The first three of those wins were over Top 10 opponents No. 2 Kansas in the Preseason NIT in New York, No. 6 Connecticut and No. 10 Duke. That was the first time in 13 years and only the third time in UNC history an unranked Carolina team beat at least three Top 10 teams in the same year. In and , Dean Smith s Carolina squads were unranked and beat three Top-10 teams (Vanderbilt and Duke twice in and Duke twice and No. 1 Oklahoma in ). LOOKING BACK AT THE SEASON RASHAD MCCANTS was MVP of the Preseason NIT and was voted to the All-ACC Rookie Team. A HISTORIC TURN OF EVENTS Maryland crushed the Tar Heels, 96-56, in College Park, Md., on February 22. A little more than three weeks later, Carolina bounced the second-seeded Terrapins out of the ACC Tournament with a stunning, win in Greensboro. The 52-point swing was the largest in Carolina basketball history. The previous mark was a 44-point swing in 1993 when UNC lost at Wake Forest by 26 points and then beat the Deacons at home by 18. The 40-point loss to Maryland was Carolina s worst in ACC play and equaled the third-worst overall in school history. Jawad Williams (25) and Melvin Scott (19) both had career scoring highs and Raymond Felton had 20 points and 10 assists in the improbable ACC Tournament triumph. THREE-POINT ATTEMPTS A KEY INDICATOR Carolina went 9-2 in games when it attempted 20 or fewer three-pointers (with the losses coming at Illinois and vs. Duke in the ACC semifinals). Conversely, the Tar Heels were 5-8 when they attempted more than 25 three-pointers. That included an 0-8 record in ACC play and non-conference wins over Davidson, Vermont, NC A&T, DePaul and Wyoming. Carolina was 1-4 when attempting 30 or more three-pointers (the win was against Vermont). ALL-ACC SELECTIONS Raymond Felton was named third-team All-ACC. Rashad McCants and Jawad Williams were named Honorable Mention All-ACC. Felton is the first UNC freshman to make All-ACC first, second or third team since Joseph Forte was a second-team selection in Felton was named to the ACC All- Tournament Team. He had 20 points and 10 assists against Maryland in the quarterfinal and 18 points, five assists and three steals in the semifinal against Duke. Jawad Williams, who had 25 points against the Terps, was a second-team All-Tournament selection. FELTON FIRST FRESHMAN MVP Raymond Felton was voted Carolina s Most Valuable Player, the first time in school history a freshman was received the award. Felton had 236 assists the most ever for a UNC freshman (Ed Cota had 235 in ). He averaged 12.9 points, 6.7 assists and 4.1 rebounds, made 69 three-pointers and led the team with 56 steals. The Latta, S.C., native tied the school-record by hitting eight threepointers at NC State, en route to a season-high 28 points. That was one of four games in which he topped 20 points. Felton had 10 or more assists on seven occasions, including 14 against Wyoming. That tied the alltime NIT record, is UNC s alltime record for

freshman and was the highest single-game figure by an ACC player last year. Over the final six games (Duke and five postseason games), Felton averaged 15.3 points and 9.8 assists. FELTON, MCCANTS TOP ROOKIE TEAM Raymond Felton (92 votes) and Rashad McCants (86) were named to the ACC All-Freshman Team. Felton tied Georgia Tech s Chris Bosh as the leading vote-getter. They were both named on all 92 ballots. Duke s J.J. Redick (91), McCants and Wake Forest s Justin Gray (33) rounded out the top five. Felton and McCants are the eighth and ninth Tar Heels to be named to the All-ACC Freshman Team since the ACC began the award in RAYMOND & RASHAD ARE UNC S TOP-SCORING FRESHMEN DUO Raymond Felton (450 points) and Rashad McCants (594) combined for 1,044 points in and are the top scoring freshman duo in UNC history. Felton and McCants are just the second pair of Tar Heel freshmen ever to both top 300 points in the same season. Jerry Stackhouse (428) and Rasheed Wallace (333) did so in , combining for 761 points. McCants scored in double figures in 33 of 35 Carolina games during the season including a league-best 20 straight games to start the season. Felton scored in double figures in 23 of the season s last 26 games (after doing so in just three of his first nine collegiate games). Felton was named ACC Rookie of the Week three times. McCants earned Rookie of the Week honors twice and was ACC Player of the Week following the Preseason NIT. RAYMOND FELTON was second in the ACC in assists last year. MCCANTS ESTABLISHES FRESHMAN SCORING MARKS Rashad McCants scored 594 points, the second-most in a season ever by a UNC freshman. Joseph Forte had 600 in McCants averaged 17.0 points per game a new UNC freshman record. Forte held the previous mark at 16.7 ppg. McCants scored 20 or more points 12 times, a UNC freshman record. The Asheville, N.C., native had 28 points against Penn State, the most ever by a Tar Heel in his first game. FRESHMEN SCORING FOURTH IN ACC HISTORY Carolina s freshman class averaged 42.1 points per game, led by Rashad McCants (17.0), Raymond Felton (12.9) and Sean May (11.4). That is the fourth-highest combined freshman scoring average in ACC history and the most in UNC history. Duke s class, which included Johnny Dawkins, Mark Alarie and Jay Bilas, averaged a record 52.9 points. Georgia Tech s freshmen averaged 46.9 points in and Clemson s class netted 44.4 points per game. MAY S LOSS TOUGH TO OVERCOME Freshman Sean May played in just 11 games, including just one game after December. May, who had been out of action since Dec. 27 with a broken fifth metatarsal in his left foot, returned in the ACC Tournament semifinal vs. Duke on March 15. He had four points, three rebounds and two blocks in 10 minutes of action against the Blue Devils. May had played in 10 games and was averaging 12.1 points and 8.6 rebounds before the injury. He had 10 or more rebounds five times and scored in double figures in six of Carolina's first seven games. At the time of his injury, he was leading the Tar Heels in steals with 17. The Tar Heels were 7-2 prior to May s injury. He originally suffered the injury in an early December practice. CAROLINA MOVES PAST 1,800 WINS Carolina s victory over Connecticut on Jan. 18 was the 1,800th in school history, making UNC just the second program in the nation (joining Kentucky) to reach 1,800 wins. Carolina has an alltime record of 1, Carolina also is the only school to top 500 all-time ACC wins (UNC has 502). The Tar Heels won their 500th ACC regular-season game against Florida State on Feb. 8, DEFENSE A KEY Carolina s improved defense allowed 71.2 ppg in , almost eight points a game less than the previous year (78.9 ppg in ). The Tar Heels held their opponents to 39.2 percent field goal shooting and 63.0 points per game in UNC s 19 victories. By contrast, the opponents shot 49.6 percent in Carolina s 16 losses. Carolina went 4-12 when its opponents scored 70 points or more (wins over Duke, Maryland, DePaul and Wyoming) after Sean May was injured in late December. THREE FRESHMEN STARTERS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN UNC HISTORY Raymond Felton, Sean May and Rashad McCants started in the season opener against Penn State. That was the first time in 2,440 games the Tar Heels began a game with a three freshmen

SEAN MAY averaged 15.3 points and 8.7 rebounds before being injured last year. with Felton, May and McCants. starters. Freshmen David Noel and Byron Sanders also took turns in the starting lineup at various points in the season. The Tar Heels had 104 combined starts by freshmen. No other ACC school made more than 67 starts by freshmen (Georgia Tech). NC State and Clemson did not have a freshmen start any game and Florida State had two. Carolina and Georgia Tech were the only two schools not to have at least 25 games started by seniors. Will Johnson and Jonathan Holmes combined to start three times. The Tar Heels started an unprecedented four first-year players against Iona when David Noel started along CAROLINA WINS PRESEASON NIT The Tar Heels won the Preseason NIT for the second time by defeating Stanford, Carolina won the Preseason NIT in November 1998, also by beating Stanford in the championship game. Raymond Felton connected on 4 of 6 three-pointers and had a season-high 16 points to go along with a game-high seven assists. Felton was one of four Tar Heels to score in double figures along with Rashad McCants (18), Jackie Manuel (14) and Sean May (12). McCants had 25 points as the Tar Heels upset No. 2 Kansas in the semifinal. The Tar Heels led by as many as 21 points and scored 24 points off 21 Jayhawk turnovers. The win over Kansas was the 25th time in UNC history the Tar Heels had beaten the No. 1 or No. 2 ranked team in the nation. It was Carolina s highest over a ranked team since beating No. 2 Duke on February 1, Sean May s 19 points and 10 rebounds led UNC to a late comeback win over Rutgers in the second round. BRIEFLY... Melvin Scott averaged 12.4 ppg and tied for the team lead with 13 three-pointers in the five ACC and NIT Tournament games. Scott shot 57.1 percent from the floor and 13 for 24 (54.2 percent) from three-point range in the postseason. In postseason play, the Tar Heels hit 43.0 percent of their three-point attempts, led by Melvin Scott (13 of 24, 54.2 percent), Jawad Williams (13 of 24, 54.2 percent) and Rashad McCants (10 of 25, 40.0). UNC shot 51.1 percent from the floor in the five postseason games. The Tar Heels were 8-4 when McCants scored 20 or more points, 13-3 when Felton had seven or more assists and 11-6 when Felton had three or fewer turnovers. David Noel averaged 9.3 points and 5.5 rebounds over the final 16 games. Jawad Williams led the team at the free throw line, shooting 75.2 percent for the season. That was an improvement of 19.5 percent from the previous season. The Tar Heels went 13-5 at home, including a 5-3 mark in the ACC. Prior to the season, Carolina had never played a home game later than March 7. Last year, the Tar Heels played Duke (March 9), DePaul (March 18), Wyoming (March 24) and Georgetown (March 26) at the Smith Center. Carolina played six teams that were part of the 2003 NCAA Tournament field, posting a 6-10 record against the field. UNC beat a No. 2 seed (Kansas), a No. 3 seed (Duke), a No. 4 seed (Stanford), a No. 5 seed (Connecticut), a No. 6 seed (Maryland) and a No. 16 seed (Vermont). Seven of Carolina s 19 wins came by five points or less. Five different players recorded double-doubles last year, including Raymond Felton (four), Jawad Williams (three), Sean May (three in just 11 games), Rashad McCants (two) and David Noel (one). Carolina was ranked for four weeks in both the Associated Press and coaches polls. The Tar Heels were unranked to start the year, but emerged at No. 12 in the AP and No. 14 in the coaches poll after winning the Preseason NIT. Losses to Illinois and Kentucky dropped Carolina to No. 22 in both polls the following week. UNC stayed in the rankings for two more weeks until the loss to Iona and injury to Sean May knocked the Tar Heels out of the Top 25 for the remainder of the season. Junior swingman JACKIE MANUEL has 72 steals and 44 blocked shots in 61 career games as a Tar Heel. He averaged 7.3 points per game last year.

HEAD COACH ROY WILLIAMS Roy Williams, the winningest active coach in the country, embarks on his first season as head coach at his alma mater, the University of North Carolina. Williams became the UNC coach on April 14, 2003, just one week after leading the Kansas Jayhawks to the NCAA championship game. The 1972 Carolina graduate is one of the most well respected coaches in the game, in addition to being one of its most successful. In 15 seasons as head coach at the University of Kansas, Williams built a model program that was second to none in the nation. His teams won more than 80 percent of its games, his players were exemplary studentathletes and the program was first-class in all aspects. Williams joins the Tar Heels after leading Kansas to back-to-back appearances in the Final Four. Those were part of 14 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, the second-longest active streak in the country and the fourth-longest by a coach in NCAA Tournament history. The Asheville, N.C., native compiled a record, a winning percentage of.805. That win percentage is No.1 among active coaches and third-best in history behind only Clair Bee (.826) and Adolph Rupp (.822). No other active coach in the country has won at least 80 percent of his games. Williams secured his 400th win on January 15, 2003, when the Jayhawks defeated Wyoming, Williams got to 400 wins faster than all but three coaches in history (Rupp, Bee and Jerry Tarkanian). In fact, he has won more games than any coach after eight, nine, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15 seasons as a head coach. He is the second-winningest Jayhawk coach in history behind only Phog Allen. He spent 10 seasons as an assistant coach under Dean Smith at Carolina. From , Williams helped coach such Tar Heel standouts as Mike O Koren, Al Wood, James Worthy, Sam Perkins, Matt Doherty, Michael Jordan, Brad Daugherty, Kenny Smith, Joe Wolf, Steve Hale, Jeff Lebo, J.R. Reid and Scott Williams. The Tar Heels appeared in the NCAA Tournament in each of Williams 10 seasons. Carolina won the NCAA title in 1982, finished second in 1981 and won or shared six Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season titles and three ACC Tournament championships (1979, CHANCELLOR JAMES MOESER (r) introduces ROY WILLIAMS as UNC s head coach on April 14, , 1982). Combining his 10 seasons as assistant at Carolina and 15 years as head coach at Kansas, Williams has been a part of 661 wins and just 158 defeats. Williams was named head coach at Kansas on July 8, 1988, replacing another former Tar Heel, Larry Brown. Williams is a member of Brown s 2004 U.S. Olympic Team coaching staff. At Kansas, Williams earned National Coach of the Year honors in 1990, 1991, 1992 and 1997 and was Big Eight/Big 12 Coach of the Year seven times (1990, 1992, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2002 and 2003). In April 2003 he received the John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award by the Los Angeles Athletic Club. Other recipients of the Wooden Coaching Award are Dean Smith, Mike Krzyzewski, Lute Olson and Denny Crum. Williams coached a number of the finest Kansas players in history, including Mark Randall, Adonis Jordan, Rex Walters, Greg Ostertag, Scot Pollard, Jacque Vaughn, Raef LaFrentz, Paul Pierce, Drew Gooden, Nick Collison and Kirk Hinrichs. The Jayhawks won 20 or more games in each of the last 14 seasons, went in conference play over the last seven years and posted a phenomenal record at Allen Fieldhouse. Kansas averaged 27.9 wins per seasons with a high of 35 in That was one of five 30- win seasons. The others included 30 in , 34 in , 33 in and 30 in He led Kansas to the Final Four in 1991, 1993, 2002 and Kansas was in the NCAA Tournament, a winning percentage of.608 that is the sixth-best active mark in the country. The Jayhawks reached the Sweet 16 nine times and the Final Eight on five occasions. Last year, Kansas went 30-8, including a 14-2 record in the Big 12 that produced Williams ninth regular-season conference title. Led by Collison, the NABC National Player of the Year, and Hinrichs, another All-America, the Jayhawks beat Duke, Arizona and Marquette en route to the national championship game. It was KU s first back-to-back appearance in the Final Four since Kansas led the nation in in scoring margin (+15.8), was second in rebound margin (+7.9), third in scoring (82.7), seventh in assists (17.2) and ninth in steals (9.8). Williams' teams won nine regular-season conference championships over the last 13 years. In seven years of Big 12 Conference play, his teams went 94-18, capturing the regular-season title in 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2003 and the postseason tournament crown in 1997, 1998 and In , KU became the first Big 12 team to go 16-0 in league play. From , Kansas was a combined an average of 30.8 wins per season. He was hired just months after the Danny Manning-led Jayhawks won the 1988 NCAA championship. Weeks after taking the position, KU was placed on probation for violations that took place prior to his arrival. Williams' teams went (.922) in Allen Fieldhouse. Kansas won 62 consecutive home games from February 1994 to December 1998, Kansas was a regular in the Associated Press Top 25 from 1991 to 1999, placing in the AP poll for 145 consecutive weeks. Williams' teams were ranked in the Top 10 in 194 AP polls since Last year, the Jayhawks spent the last six weeks in the AP Top 10, finishing at No. 6. Williams had Kansas in the AP Top 25 in 242 of 268 weekly polls. Kansas reached the No. 1 ranking in the country in six different seasons and was ranked at least No. 2 in the nation in 11 of the 15 seasons. His players have garnered 17 first-team all-conference honors, seven first-team All-America honors and five conference player of the year

nation in 2003 Scored 100 or more points 71 times (once every 13 games) Averaged 82.7 points per game in 15 years Averaged 90 or more points in two seasons (92.1 in 1990 and 90.9 in 2002). Over the last eight seasons, three Kansas players earned first-team Academic All-America honors Ryan Robertson in 1999, Jacque Vaughn and Jerod Haase in 1997 and Vaughn in Kansas players earned 31 first-team academic all-conference honors. ROY WILLIAMS led Kansas to four Final Fours and nine Big Eight or Big 12 regular-season championships.. Williams grew up outside of Asheville, N.C., in the small community of Biltmore. He attended T. C. Roberson High School, where he earned letters in basketball and baseball for four seasons. In basketball, he was named all-county and all-conference for two years (1967 and 1968), allwestern North Carolina in 1968 and served as captain in the North Carolina Blue-White All-Star Game.-- Much of Williams coaching style comes from spending so many years observing and then coaching with Dean Smith. Williams played on Carolina s freshman team in under Coach Bill Guthridge, Williams often sat in on Smith's varsity practice sessions taking notes and furthering his knowledge of the game, notes Williams maintains even today. He earned two degrees from Carolina a bachelor's degree in education in 1972 and an M.A.T. in In 1973, Williams began his coaching career at Charles D. Owen Swannanoa (N.C.) High School. He coached basketball and boys' golf for five years, ninth-grade football for four years and served as athletics director for two years. He then joined Smith s staff as in 1978, adding to his income by traveling all over the state selling basketball team calendars and delivering Smith s weekly TV show to affiliates. While a member of Smith s staff, the Tar Heels went Williams, 53 (born August 1, 1950), and wife, Wanda, have a son, Scott, and a daughter, Kimberly. Scott a guard on the UNC basketball team in and , works in Charlotte. Kimberly, a 2002 Carolina graduate, resides in Lawrence, Kan. awards. Two different players Gooden and Collison were voted the best player in the country by the NABC in the last two seasons. He coached four KU players to consensus first-team All-America honors LaFrentz in 1997 and 1998, Pierce in 1998, Gooden in 2002 and Collison in Ten (10) of his players were selected in the first round of the NBA Draft: Randall (1991), Walters (1993), Ostertag (1995), Pollard (1997), Vaughn (1997), LaFrentz (1998), Pierce (1998), Gooden (2002), Hinrichs (2003) and Collison (2003). Kansas won three Preseason NITs, posting a 14-2 record in that event. Williams teams at Kansas displayed many of the characteristics of Dean Smith s Carolina teams they fast break to create easy baskets, play unselfishly and take good shots, play a tenacious man-to-man defense, and academic success is a priority. Those characteristics are evident when you look at some of KU s statistics in the Williams era: Led the nation in field goal percentage and scoring in 2002 and in scoring margin in 2003 Held opponents to the lowest field goal percentage in the country in 2001 (37.8 percent) Led the nation in winning percentage in 1997 and 2002 Shot better than 50 percent from the floor seven times and led the country in field goal percentage in 1990 at 53.3 percent and in 2002 at 50.6 percent Shot a combined 49.4 percent from the floor in 15 seasons Led the nation in assists in 2001 and 2002 and was seventh in the WINNINGEST COACHES BY PERCENTAGE, ALLTIME Clair Bee, Rider & Long Island Adolph Rupp, Kentucky Roy Williams, Kansas John Wooden, Indiana State & UCLA John Krese, College of Charleston WINNINGEST COACHES BY PERCENTAGE, ACTIVE (CURRENT TEAM) Roy Williams (North Carolina) Jim Boeheim (Syracuse) Lute Olson (Arizona) Rick Majerus (Utah) Mike Krzyzewski (Duke) FASTEST TO 400 WINS, COACH ALLTIME Adolph Rupp 400 wins in 477 games Clair Bee 400 wins in 483 games Jerry Tarkanian 400 wins in 492 games Roy Williams 400 wins in 496 games Henry Iba 400 wins in 500 games CONSECUTIVE NCAA TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES, COACH ALLTIME Dean Smith, North Carolina ( ) 23 Lute Olson, Arizona (1985 ) 19 Bob Knight, Indiana ( ) 15 Roy Williams, Kansas (1990 ) 14 John Thompson, Georgetown ( ) 14
