1 HAYAA BASKETBALL RULES OF PLAY FOR IN-HOUSE AND REC-TRAVEL TEAMS (REVISED ) Pre-game Players should arrive no more than 30 minutes before their scheduled game time. The home team sits on the home side of the scoreboard and visitor team sits on the visitor side of the scoreboard. The visitor team number will be listed first on the schedule followed by the home team number. The visitor team will wear the WHITE jersey, and the home team will wear the BLUE jersey. Teams warm up at the goal opposite their seats. Coaches should designate an adult scorekeeper/timekeeper for his or her team, and have them seated at the scorer s table. Coaches who play the first game must arrive early to setup the scoreboard and tables for the games. Post- game Shake hands with opposing team and referees. Good sportsmanship is a must! Report score to league commissioner (via or text, per commissioner). Scores MUST be reported within 24 hours of game. Non-reporting of scores will be considered a forfeit. Coaches are to make sure that their playing area is cleaned up with no garbage left behind after the game. Coaches who played the last games will take down and put away the scoreboards, tables and chairs and make sure the gyms are clean. Game duration Freshman Boys/Girls and JV Boys o Game will consist of eight (8) five-minute sections, four per half. Varsity and Senior Boys o Each game consists of two (2) halves lasting twenty (20) minutes each. There will be a five (5) minute break at half-time. The clock will run continuously, except under the following conditions: o Last 2 minutes of play o Referee s or coach s time-out 2 timeouts for coaches per half o Injury (restart clock at referee s signal) o Player foul-out Playing time Freshman Boys/Girls and JV Boys o Playing time will be divided as evenly as possible per player on the team. o Coaches can play players during any portion of the game. o There is no mandatory playing time for each half. o There are four 5-minute sections per half. Coaches can fill each spot with kids at any time during the game. 1

2 o EX: If a player has 4 spots to fill during the game, the coach can use him in any sequence he deems necessary. That means player A can fill 4 spots consecutively or broken up. (ex: 1 in the first half and 3 in the second) o 5-minute sections are determined by the number of players on the team: 12 players = 4 players, 4 sections and 8 players, 3 sections 11 players = 7 players, 4 sections and 4 players, 3 sections 10 players = 4 sections equally 9 players = 4 players, 5 sections and 5 players, 4 sections 8 players = 5 sections equally Example chart of player layout for 10 players, 4 sections of the game. o If a player is injured or ejected from the game, his remaining spots must be filled by different players per 5-minute sections. Starting with players who are playing less sections. If all players have equal amount of sections, the coach ca insert any player of his choosing into those spots. However, a player may only fill in one time per game unless there are not enough players to fill those spots. Girls Rec-Travel players must play a minimum of 5 minutes per half. Varsity and Senior Boys o Each player must play a minimum of 5 minutes per half. Failure to play each player a minimum of 5 minutes will result in a forfeit of the game. o For timekeeping, minutes will be rounded down. o Play time will be recorded at the score table. An adult from each team shall keep score and record play time at every game. When a player has missed two or more games or practices, a coach may take disciplinary action against a player by restricting game time, but only following a review of the situation by the basketball assistant commissioner, the player, and parent (if necessary). The coach must advise the referee and opposing coach before the game begins. When a team has a 15+ point lead or higher they MUST play half court man to man defense, PRESSES, TRAPS, or ZONE defenses are not permitted with a 15+ point lead. o For the freshman level only, half court man to man is allowed. Conduct No player may argue with the referee. The team coach will handle any questions or discussions with the referee. Discussions and disagreements with the referees will be handled in a sportsmanlike manner; coaches will avoid shouting at the referees, as well as opposing players and coaches. Players issued a technical foul must sit out the remainder of the current game and the entire next game, NO EXCEPTIONS. A coach receiving 2 or more technical fouls during a single game he must leave the gym for the remainder of the current game and the entire next game. If an assistant coach is not available, the team must forfeit the remainder of the game. 2

3 Coaches who receive additional technical fouls over the course of the season will be suspended for the reminder of the current game and 1 full additional game per foul. Unsportsmanlike conduct by players, coaches, or parents, including profanity, taunting and abusive play or actions will not be tolerated. No spectators are allowed on the court. Coaches and referees will address any issues on the court. In the event a parent is needed, a coach may request them to approach the court. o Any parent who goes onto the court without being asked may receive a technical and be asked to leave the gym. Spectators will not address the referees or opposing players or coaches at any time. o The first instance will result in a warning. The opposing team will receive an automatic two points and gain possession of the ball. o The second offense will result in an automatic ejection from the game. The opposing Rules Balls o team will receive and automatic two points and gain possession of the ball. Further occurrences by a spectator, team, player or coach will result in disciplinary action imposed by the board. This includes, but not limited to ejection for the rest of the season or a life time ban from participating in HAYAA basketball. Fighting and physical violence of any type will not be tolerated. All persons involved will be immediately ejected from the game and will be required to sit out for the next 2 games of the season and be subject to further action from the board. All games will be played according to Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) rules with the exceptions and accommodations contained within these rules. Games must start with at least five players per team. o If a player is injured or disqualified, and there are no eligible players remaining on the bench, the team must complete play with the remaining (less than five) eligible players. JV and Varsity girls rec-travel teams are subject to the rules of the league they play in. If played in Hartland the below rules apply. If played at another location then those rules will supersede HAYAA rules. Conduct and minimum rules of playing time will still apply. Freshman Boys and Girls, JV Boys and Girls, and Varsity Girls use a junior basketball (28.5 in. circumference) Varsity and Senior Boys use a regulation-size ball (29.5 in. circumference) Defense Freshman teams will ONLY use a half court man-to-man defense. o After a defensive rebound the opposing team must fall back. If they do not fall back, the ref will stop play and instruct players to fall back. o No trapping at half court and no zone defenses. All defensive must maintain proximity to their assigned offensive player. o The intent here is to teach man-to-man defensive skills; not zone and trapping defenses. Double teaming is only allowed inside the lane for basic fundamental help defense associated with man to man. Any type of defense may be played in the JV, Varsity and Senior divisions. Varsity and Senior teams may employ a full-court press at any time 3

4 JV, Varsity and Senior teams may employ a full or half-court press as long as their lead is less than 15 points, if lead is greater than 15 points ONLY half court man to man is to be played, no TRAPS (half or full), ZONES or Designed double teams ma by employed. It is our goal to keep games as competitive as possible. Violation of this rule will result in a team technical for the violating team and referees are responsible for enforcement, not the opposing coach. Offense Three-point line is in effect when an approved line exists. Free throws Freshmen and JV players will shoot from the free throw line. A jump past the line is allowed. Varsity and Senior players shoot from the regulation 15-foot mark. Players are allowed 10 seconds to shoot after being handed the ball by the referee. The clock stops on a shooting foul and remains off until the final foul shot hits the rim. Freshman, JV, Varsity and Seniors can pursue rebound on shot release. Lane violations Freshman players are allowed 5 seconds in the key JV, Varsity and Senior players are allowed 3 seconds in the key Other time limitations Taking the ball in from out of bounds 5 seconds Getting the ball across the half-court line 10 seconds Holding the ball while guarded 5 seconds before passing or dribbling Overtime Rules In the event the game ends in a tie score, the game will be decided by a 2-minute overtime with a running clock. o This will be played using any players on the team that have not fouled out. o In the event that the game is still tied after overtime, a 5-free throw tie breaker will continue, using players that did not play during the overtime period. o This will be continued until there is a winner. Time-outs Each team will be allowed (2) 1-minute time-outs per half. Unused time-outs do not carry over to the next half. o A player on the court or a coach may call for a time out. Coaches on sidelines During the game, only ONE coach is to be standing at a time (where appropriate seating is provided). o One assistant coach may be seated on the sideline. 4

5 o Additional volunteers may be at the score table to run the clock or keep track of player time. o If the additional volunteers are not running the clock or keeping player time sheet, they shall be seated in the stands. Playoffs If end of season playoffs is decided upon by the Board, these will be played in a single elimination fashion unless a round robin type bracket will work. Tournament play will use the same type of rules as stated for the regular season. Playoffs may be played on the last week or last two weeks of the regular season, depending on number of teams. All Star Game If an end of season All Star Game is decided on by the Board, this game will be in addition to the regular season and played at a later date. Number of players chosen will be determined by the number of teams in the division. Coach selection will be based on voting by his/her peers. o If a coach has been ejected from a game or has received 3 technical fouls in the season, he/she will bot be eligible to coach a team during the All-Star Game. 5
