1 THE MATCH-UP Kansas City will make its first trek to Buffalo since 96 as the Chiefs visit the Bills on Sunday. Although the Chiefs haven t played at Ralph Wilson Stadium in nearly a decade, that facility has been a particularly inhospitable host for Kansas City over the years. Since the Chiefs last regular season victory in Western New York in 86, Kansas City has dropped a pair of postseason decisions at Buffalo, including the 93 AFC Championship Game. While Kansas City s last visit to Buffalo cost the franchise a spot in the 96 playoffs, the Chiefs have had the Bills number as of late. Kansas City owns victories in three of the last four contests between these two original American Football League adversaries, including a convincing 38-5 win at Arrowhead (10/26/03) in the most recent meeting. In addition, Chiefs head coach Dick Vermeil owns a sparkling 4-0 career record vs. the Bills, making Buffalo the only club he has faced three or more times that has never defeated one of his teams. Vermeil s squad enters Sunday s contest with a 5-3 record after producing a dramatic home win vs. Oakland (11/6). Kansas City held a 20-9 lead in the fourth quarter of that contest before the Raiders stormed back to take a lead with 1:45 remaining. However, QB Trent Green quickly guided the Chiefs downfield and RB Larry Johnson vaulted the Chiefs to victory as time expired with a one-yard TD plunge as KC eschewed a potential game-tying FG and went for the win. That TD was set up by a 36-yard reception on the previous play by Johnson, who finished the game with 107 rushing yards and two TDs. Kansas City is one of five AFC teams with a 5-3 record or better and will be seeking to win back-to-back contests for the third time this season. Buffalo is 3-5 and coming off a bye week. The Bills are seeking to halt a two-game losing streak after suffering a loss at Oakland (10/23) and a setback at New England (10/30). However, the Bills own a 3-1 record at home in 2005, with that only loss coming by a count vs. Atlanta (9/25). Up next for KC is a Sunday night contest at Houston (11/20), while the Bills will visit San Diego (11/20). The date is also significant in Chiefs history since it was the birthdate of the late LB Derrick Thomas who was born in Miami, Florida that same day. Kansas City has won three of its last four games vs. the Bills, but all four of those meetings have come at Arrowhead. The Chiefs are just 1-8 all-time against Buffalo at Ralph Wilson Stadium with that lone win coming by a count (9/28/86). The Chiefs last trip to Buffalo resulted in a 20-9 loss in the 96 regular season finale (12/22/96). Chiefs Founder Lamar Hunt and Bills Chairman Ralph Wilson, Jr. were both members of the whimsically-named eight-man Foolish Club that launched the American Football League which began play in 60. The Chiefs/Texans claimed AFL titles in 62, 66 and 69, while the Bills won back-to-back AFL crowns in

2 THE HEAD COACHES DICK VERMEIL NFL Head Coach: 15th Year NFL Coach Overall: 19th Year NFL Overall: (.519) Regular Season: (.520) Postseason: 6-5 (.545) Record w/phi: (.535) Record w/stl: (.458) Record w/kc: (.541) College: San Jose State ( 58) Dick Vermeil was named the ninth head coach in Chiefs history on January 12, 2001 following head coaching stints with Philadelphia ( 76-82) and St. Louis ( 97-99). He is one of just four coaches in NFL history to lead two different teams to the Super Bowl and has twice been named NFL Coach of the Year. The Calistoga, California native began his NFL coaching career with the L.A. Rams ( 69, 71-73) serving as the team s special teams, RBs, and QBs coach and offensive coordinator. During his tenure as head coach in Philadelphia ( 76-82), he compiled a record. In 78, Vermeil guided the Eagles to their first playoff appearance in 12 years. He then led the 80 Eagles to a 12-4 record to earn a trip to Super Bowl XV. Vermeil returned to the sidelines as the head coach of St. Louis for three seasons ( 97-99), guiding the Rams to a 13-3 record in 99, concluding the year with a win in Super Bowl XXXIV. A standout quarterback at San Jose State, Vermeil served as an assistant at Stanford ( 65-68) and UCLA ( 70) before taking over the head coaching duties for the Bruins from In 75, he led UCLA to a victory over #1 ranked Ohio State in the Rose Bowl. A member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame s Class of 2003, Stram served as the franchise s head coach from , compiling a regular season record and a 5-3 playoff mark. He guided the club to three AFL titles and a win in Super Bowl IV. His many contributions to the game include the two-tight end offense, the stack defense and the moving pocket. Perhaps the most fitting compliment paid to Stram came courtesy of QB Len Dawson at Stram s HOF enshrinement in I wear a Super Bowl ring on one hand and a Hall of Fame ring on the other, Dawson remarked. I know I wouldn t have had either one if it hadn t been for this guy Hank Stram. REMEMBERING P JERREL WILSON ( ) The Chiefs also lost another link to their Super Bowl IV squad this off-season when P Jerrel Wilson passed away on April 9th. Wilson served as the club s punter from and still holds an NFL record by leading the league in punting four times ( 65, 68, 72-73). A member of the AFL s All-Time Team, he was inducted into the Chiefs Hall of Fame in 88. Wilson came to the Chiefs from Southern Mississippi, the same school that also produced longtime Raiders P Ray Guy. Arguably two of the finest punters in pro football history, Wilson s 43.4-yard career average was actually a full yard better than Guy s 42.4-yard mark, leading Rick Cleveland of the Clarion (MS) Ledger to say this of Wilson after his death: He was Ray Guy before Ray Guy. Prior to joining Buffalo, Mularkey spent eight seasons with Pittsburgh as a tight ends coach ( 96-00) and offensive coordinator ( ). Under his tutelage, the Steelers offense ranked in the top five in both 2001 and Mularkey s original NFL coaching experience came as a quality control coach ( 94) and tight ends coach ( 95) with Tampa Bay. He first broke into the coaching profession as an offensive line coach with Concordia (MN) College in 93. 4 A Fast Start From the Chiefs is a Prerequisite For Registering a Victory at Buffalo by Pete Moris The Bills Are Always a Tough Adversary at Home Buffalo is traditionally a tough place for opponents to win. Although head coach Mike Mularkey s record stands at during his brief tenure with the Bills, his squad is 8-4 at home and 4-8 on the road. In fact, Buffalo is 8-2 in its last 10 home games dating back to last season. In the club s 12 home victories under Mularkey, the average score has been 24.2 to 16.9 in favor of the Bills. Although the Chiefs haven t won in Buffalo since 86, the Chiefs successfully vexed a road hex against another AFC East club when KC registered a win at Miami (10/21), the club s first road win against the Dolphins since 89. Buffalo Frequently Gets Off to Fast Starts Buffalo has outscored its opponents by a 40-7 margin in the first quarter. No NFL team has relinquished fewer points in the opening 15 minutes than Buffalo and only NYG (+40) has outscored its foes by more points in the first quarter than the Bills (+33). However, the Bills have been outscored by a margin in the final three quarters. The biggest problem area for Buffalo has been the fourth quarter. Only SF (13) has scored fewer points in the final quarter than Buffalo (22) this season. Only three teams SF (-77), HOU (-41) and NO (-33) have been outscored by more points in the fourth quarter than Buffalo (-29). KC is tied for fifth in the NFL, owning 61 fourth-quarter points in KC has outscored its opponents by a margin in the first quarter with the Chiefs defense pitching a first-quarter shutout in five games this season. In fact, KC has allowed just three points on opponents opening possessions in 2005, the second-best mark in the NFL. Meanwhile, Buffalo s defense has pitched a first-quarter shutout in seven games. The only team to score on the Bills in the first quarter this season was Atlanta. The Bills have won six of their last seven games when leading at halftime under Mike Mularkey and Buffalo has outscored its opponents by a margin in the first half of its three wins in KC has led at halftime in both of its road wins this season, outscoring Oakland and Miami a combined score in the first two quarters of those games. Gonzalez Close to Owning Triple Crown of KC Receiving Marks TE Tony Gonzalez (7,281) needs just 26 receiving yards to pass WR Otis Taylor (7,306) for the most receiving yards in KC history. Gonzalez (55) also needs three more TD catches to bypass Taylor (57) for the most TD receptions in KC annals. Here s a look... The Bills have won 10 straight home games with a positive turnover mark. Under Mike Mularkey, Buffalo is 10-1 when positive and 2-11 when even or negative. Chiefs QB Trent Green has not thrown an INT in 145 consecutive pass attempts. KC is 11-3 when producing a 100-yard rusher dating back to 2003, including a 5-0 mark when RB Larry Johnson tops the century mark. The Bills are 6-23 when allowing a 100-yard rusher dating back to Buffalo is 9-2 when RB Willis McGahee produces a 100-yard rushing game, including a 7-1 mark when he does it at home. KC has not permitted an individual 100-yard rusher in 15 consecutive games, the second-longest active streak in the NFL (Pittsburgh 20). McGahee (23rd overall) and Johnson (27th overall) were the top two RBs selected in the 2003 NFL Draft. Buffalo is 4-10 vs. AFC West opponents dating back to 97, when KC snapped a three-game losing streak to the Bills. Buffalo has lost 19 consecutive games when allowing an opposing QB to post a rating or better (min. 20 atts.). Chiefs Seek to Prevent a 300-Yard Passer vs. Buffalo Buffalo has not had a QB post a 300-yard passing game in 38 consecutive contests since QB Drew Bledsoe threw for 314 yards at Jacksonville (9/14/03). That ranks as the second-longest streak in NFL behind only Chicago which has not had a 300-yard passer in 51 games since QB Jim Miller had 353 yards vs. Green Bay (10/7/02). Only one Bills signal caller has ever boasted a 300-yard effort against KC. QB Jack Kemp threw for exactly 300 yards in a Bills victory at KC (10/13/63). Most notably, the Chiefs defense is allowing 19.7 fewer rushing yards per game in 2005 and has allowed half as many rushing TDs. In addition, KC s defense has forced five more turnovers this season than it did after eight games a year ago. 7 THE LAST GAME Chiefs 27, Raiders 23 November 6, 2005 Arrowhead Stadium 79,033 OAKLAND KANSAS CITY Trailing by three points with the ball on the one-yard line and only five seconds left on the clock, Chiefs head coach Dick Vermeil had to make one of the toughest calls in football. A chip-shot field goal would have sent the game to overtime, but instead Vermeil decided it would be all or nothing. Instead of playing for the tie, Vermeil put the ball in the hands of RB Larry Johnson who started in place of injured Priest Holmes. Johnson took the handoff and did his best impression of Holmes, leaping over the goal line and into the win column with his second TD of the day, capping a thrilling Chiefs win. After both teams got off to a slow start with five first-half field goals, the fourth quarter turned into a typically wild Raiders- Chiefs contest. The Chiefs took a 13-9 lead late in the third quarter when QB Trent Green hit FB Tony Richardson on a fouryard touchdown pass just inside the right pylon. Chiefs S Greg Wesley intercepted Raiders QB Kerry Collins on the ensuing drive to set up another Chiefs score, this time a 15-yard TD run from Johnson. Breaking two tackles, Johnson burst off-tackle left and ripped off 15 of his game-high 107 rushing yards to up the lead to 20-9 early in the fourth quarter. The Raiders wouldn t go away quietly as Collins steadily marched them on back-to-back touchdown drives to regain the lead. First, Collins found WR Jerry Porter on a four-yard score after a penalty-aided 71-yard drive. Then, trailing 20-15, Oakland churned out a 14-play scoring drive that consumed 6:22 off the clock. The drive featured four third-down conversions including the final one which resulted in a seven-yard WR Randy Moss TD catch. After a successful twopoint conversion run by RB LaMont Jordan, the stage was set for yet another dramatic Kansas City-Oakland finish. The Chiefs trailed the Raiders by a margin with 1:45 remaining. Green, who had missed two days of practice this week due to his father s death, led the Chiefs to one of the greatest comebacks of his career. Taking over at the KC 28-yard line, Green completed five passes, including a 36-yard checkdown to Johnson on the next-to-last play of the game. Johnson took the catch and tried to outrun the Raiders secondary to the end zone, but was tripped up just short of goal line. With 0:05 on the clock that left just one final yard and one final decision for the Chiefs. Despite playing without three injured starters Holmes, T Willie Roaf and CB Patrick Surtain and getting off to a slow start, the Chiefs used their defense to keep the game within striking distance. Kansas City held Oakland to just 263 total yards on the day and allowed Collins only 175 passing yards. CB Dewayne Washington, who got the start in place of Surtain, came up with numerous big plays and helped hold Moss to a single catch on the afternoon. GAME NOTES G Will Shields played in his 200th consecutive game, joining K Nick Lowery (212) and P Jerrel Wilson (203) as the only players in franchise history to own 200 or more regular season game appearances.
