1 IOWA 4 H SAFETY & EDUCATION SHOOTING SPORTS PROGRAM EXTENSION & OUTREACH 4 H YOUTH PROGRAMS IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY 4 H EXTENSION YOUTH BUILDING 1259 STANGE ROAD AMES, IA Iowa State Match Rules Archery All archery competitors must be in at least 4th grade and 9 years old as of January 1 of the current year. For SAFETY and consideration to others, ALL PARTICIPANTS WILL ABIDE BYACCEPTED SAFETY RULES AND ALL SPECIFIC RANGE AND EVENT RULES, ORTHEY WILL BE DISQUALIFIED. Enforcement of these rules is the responsibility of the Range Master and Officers. Eye protection is strongly recommended and it is at the discretion of range to require that eye protection be worn. The use of arm guards is mandatory. All shooters must have their own quivers. If a participant is enrolled in Archery and another discipline, the participant should report and see which event is first. We will be shooting a quarter of a FITA round. Junior 4H members will be shooting at a distance of 15 Meters (16.4 yards) on an 80 cm target face. Intermediates and Seniors will be shooting at 30 Meters (32.8 yards) on a n 80 cm target face. The shooters will have 2 minutes to shoot each end and they will shoot 6 ends of 3 arrows. The shooters will have 2 ends of practice before scoring starts. A maximum score of 180 points. Junior 4H members will have someone score their scores for them. Intermediate and Senior shooters will do double scoring. There will be squads of 3 to 4 shooters per target and having 2 shooters shooting at the same target at the same time. Double scoring is where the shooter has two score cards. The shooters then choose two people to write down the scores, one person to call each arrow score, and the 4 th person would serve as observer to the squad to make sure everyone agrees with the score. If the arrow touches the next higher scoring line, it will be scored the higher point value/or X. The Range officer will be the final say if there is a question on a scored arrow. No separate classes for boys and girls. Competition will be staged in 4 events with 3 age classes each: 1) Recurve/Longbow, with or without sights and accessories; 2) Compound/Genesis with sights and accessories and 3) Barebow, The bow can be either a compound, Genesis bow, or recurve/longbow. The bow shall have no sights. You can have a stabilizer but no marking on the bow for sight aid. All Senior shooters and the eligible Intermediate shooters that are wanting to qualify for the 4H Nationals need to declare by marking both score cards with the following: 4H NQ. We will use this to verify that the shooter wishes to enter their scores for the National Qualifier.

2 Any bow that uses pulleys or cams is deemed a Compound at the 4H National Competition. Recurve Freestyle and longbows are permitted: one adjustable sight pin or multiple hunting sight pins may be used; clicker and kisser buttons permitted. Participants may have as many sight pins as deemed necessary. Torque compensators are permitted. 60lb maximum draw weight. Not Permitted: sting peeps and mechanical release aid no electronic sights. Compound bows are permitted release aids, string peeps, 60lb maximum draw weight and multiple pin sights. Not permitted: electronic sights and overdraws may not place the arrow rest further than 6 cm from the pivot point of the bow. Mathew Genesis event excludes Genesis Pro and Genesis X. Mathew Genesis event will not be considered for National Competition. If you are 14 years old by January 1st, 2019 and want to be considered for the National Invitational you must register as Compound. Divisions: a) Junior (4th 6th grade) will shoot 18 arrows at 15 meters. b) Intermediate (7th & 8th grade) will shoot 18 arrows at 30 meters. c) Senior (9th 12th grade) will shoot 18 arrows at 30 meters. All shooters will shoot the 80 cm FITA face. Each participant will shoot the required ends of arrows for their age classification as specified in the previous rule. An end is equal to 3 arrows. Each participant may shoot 2 ends (6 arrows) for practice. There are no separate styles or divisions for boys and girls. Bows Peak draw weight cannot exceed 60 pounds. No electronic sights at all. All types of bows (except foot bows and crossbows) are permitted, i.e., long bows, recurve, take down, stick bows, and compound bows. The maximum peak draw weight for bows allowed in 4 H competition shall be 60 pounds. Binoculars will be allowed to help spot the scoring rings, but NO Rangefinders! Compound division shooters are allowed to use telescopic magnified sights. A mechanical release must be used in Compound Release event; all other shooting events use fingers, finger tab, shooting glove. A chew strap may be used in place of fingers when applicable. All arrows shall be equipped with target or field points. NO HUNTING POINTS. The point must be the same size as the shaft, external inserts are not allowed. Arrows will not be permitted to lie on the ground. Hip mounted quivers are preferred, bow mounted or ground (arrow tube) quivers are permissible. Some type of quiver is required. Arrows Minimum arrow weight of 6 grains/pound of bow draw weight. No larger than27/64 (.422 inches diameter for arrows and.425 inches diameter for points maximum).make sure arrows are marked in some fashion, to be told apart from others.

3 All equipment will be inspected and approved by Range Officers prior to shooting. Shooters will straddle the firing line. Targets will be standard 80 cm FITA face. The scoring will be as follows: X s will count for 10 pts as well. All missed arrows will be marked as M for miss. A shooter must furnish his/her own equipment; targets and backstops will be provided. All shooters will start and finish each end during the scoring period allowed except in the case of equipment failure. A shooter whose equipment has failed must notify a range officer and will be allotted 20 minutes for repair. The archer will be allowed to shoot any arrows not completed after the final end. Two practice ends (6 arrows) will be allowed after the repair is completed and before scoring continues. If equipment is not repaired within allotted time, the shooter must take score before the equipment failure. NOTE: Lost or broken arrows will not be considered equipment failure; bring adequate number of arrows (at least six (8).) A minimum of eight (8) matching arrows (same length and weight) are recommended for your benefit. Scoring will be done at the completion of each end while the arrows are in the targets. Practice ends will not be scored. If the archer and the scorer cannot agree on the score, the range officer will make the decision. NO ARROWS OR TARGETS MAY BE TOUCHED UNTIL SCORED. Any arrow or target touched before scored will be scored as an M. Shooters shooting extra arrows will have highest arrow not scored plus one penalty point. Scoring Rings scoring is determined by the position of the shaft. The shaft must touch the scoring ring of the area of higher score in order to score the higher value. An X is scored when the shaft touches the inner most circle of the target, the X ring. Tie scores will be broken by: #X s first, then #10 s, #9 s, #8 s etc. until tie is broken. Witnessed bounce outs or arrows that pass completely through the target will be re shot. A dropped arrow may be replaced by a spare arrow, if the dropped arrow is within 10 feet of the shooting line. Under no condition is an archer to step in front of the shooting line to retrieve an arrow.

4 No harassment of an archer, by anyone, will be tolerated. If done by another archer, they will be disqualified and ejected from the archery range. If done by a spectator, the spectator will be ejected. Scorekeepers are not allowed to give out scores. Please don t ask nor interfere with their work. Score Cards must be signed by scorekeepers and the shooter before turned in or they are not legal. NO communication devices allowed on ranges. This includes shooters, coaches, parents or spectators Coaches may use spotting equipment. NO COACHING by coaches or parents is allowed during the firing of the matches. Encouragement offered to shooters is welcomed as long as it is not directing their shooting. In case of a breakdown or problem above the level of the shooter to handle coaches may assist, with the permission of the range officers. The three governing bodies for archery rules are: World Archery Federation for FITA, IBO for 3 D and National Field Archery Association for Field. Any rules not covered in the tournament rules will be covered by the NFAA rule book.
