1 REGULAR SEASON GAME #10 KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (4-5) AT INDIANAPOLIS COLTS (7-2) SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 18, :00 PM (CENTRAL) RCA DOME INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA TV: CBS Regional Coverage (KCTV-5 in Kansas City) Gus Johnson and Steve Tasker. RADIO: KCFX-FM (101.1) Mitch Holthus, Len Dawson, Bob Gretz and Bill Grigsby. THE MATCH-UP The Chiefs will make their first regular season appearance at the RCA Dome since 99 as Kansas City visits Indianapolis. The contest will mark the second time in the 2007 calendar year that Herm Edwards has led his Chiefs squad to the Hoosier State after suffering a 23-8 loss in an AFC Wild Card Game (1/6/07). Edwards will square off against a Tony Dungycoached squad for the initial time in the regular season since the Colts won a decision vs. the N.Y. Jets (11/16/03). Kansas City will face the unenviable task of attempting to upend the defending Super Bowl champions on their home turf. Indianapolis boasts a 35-9 (.795) regular season home record under Dungy, tying the Patriots for the best mark in the league since The Colts did suffer a loss vs. New England (11/4) in their last home contest, but have yet to drop back-toback games at the RCA Dome under Dungy s guidance. Despite losing two straight contests at Arrowhead, the Chiefs are still in the thick of the AFC West title chase with a 4-5 record and are just one game behind San Diego (5-4). Kansas City is coming off of a setback vs. Denver (11/11) and hopes to avoid a three-game losing streak for just the second time under Edwards. The Colts are atop the AFC South standings with a 7-2 record and enter this week s game after a loss at San Diego (11/11). The Colts have also lost two straight contests, but have not dropped three games in a row since the 2002 campaign. Kansas City has won its last two road games and will be attempting to win a third consecutive road contest for the first time since winning four straight away from home in Kansas City is still seeking its initial victory at the RCA Dome where the club is 0-4 all-time (0-3 regular season, 0-1 postseason). The franchise s last road victory against the Colts was a decision at Baltimore (12/21/80). Chiefs DE Jared Allen leads the NFL with 9.5 sacks and is on pace to finish the year with 16.5 QB takedowns which would be the highest tally by a KC player since the late LB Derrick Thomas led the NFL with a franchiserecord 20.0 QB takedowns in 90. Up next for the Chiefs are back-to-back home dates against AFC West foes Oakland (11/25) and San Diego (12/2). Indianapolis visits Atlanta next week on Thanksgiving night (11/22) STATS AND NFL RANKINGS CHIEFS COLTS Total Offense (30) (3) Rush Offense (31) (9) Pass Offense (17) (6) Total Defense (13t) (3) Rush Defense (17) (16) Pass Defense (19t) (2) Turnover Ratio (17t) +8 (4) Pts./Game (30t) 29.4 (3) Opp. Pts./Game (10) 16.6 (5) THE SERIES Since the AFL-NFL merger in 70, Kansas City and Indianapolis have squared off 18 times in regular and postseason play, with the Colts holding an advantage. In regular season action, the Colts hold an 8-7 edge against Kansas City. Indianapolis also owns victories in all three of the postseason meetings between the teams, a 10-7 victory at Arrowhead in a 95 AFC Divisional Playoff Game (1/7/96), a win at Arrowhead in a 2003 AFC Divisional Playoff Game (1/11/04) and a 23-8 victory at the RCA Dome in a 2006 AFC Wild Card Game (1/6/07). The Chiefs won the most recent regular season meeting between the two clubs by a count at Arrowhead (10/31/04). CHIEFS VS. Kansas City claimed a 20-7 win in the team s first-ever meeting against the Indianapolis incarnation of the Colts on 11/24/85 and snapped a six-game losing streak against the franchise in The Chiefs are 0-4 on the road against the Colts since the team relocated to Indianapolis. In addition to a 23-8 win in last season s AFC Wild Card Game at Indianapolis (1/6/07), the Colts also won the last regular season meeting at the RCA Dome by a count (11/7/99). The two AFC Divisional Playoff tilts in this series at Arrowhead are unquestionably the most memorable contests in Chiefs-Colts history. In both 2003 and 95, the Chiefs had a 13-3 campaign derailed by Indianapolis. For only the third time in NFL postseason history, neither team was forced to punt as the Colts registered a victory (1/11/04) despite a 92-yard KOR TD from WR Dante Hall and a franchise playoff record 176 rushing yards from RB Priest Holmes. Three Kansas City interceptions and three missed FGs doomed the Chiefs to a 10-7 setback (1/7/96) in a contest played with a -9 windchill as the Colts advanced to the AFC Championship Game at Pittsburgh (1/14/96) to come within a game of Super Bowl XXX.

2 HERM EDWARDS NFL Head Coach: 7th Year NFL Coach Overall: 15th Year NFL Overall: (.486) Regular Season: (.495) Postseason: 2-4 (.333) Record w/kc: (.542) Record w/nyj: (.488) Overall NFL Exp: 28th year College: San Diego State ( 77) Herm Edwards was named the 10th head coach in Kansas City history on January 9, The first coach in franchise history to guide the Chiefs to the playoffs in his initial season, he helped the 2006 Chiefs become just the fifth team since 2000 to overcome an 0-2 start and still make the postseason. Edwards guided the N.Y. Jets to three postseason berths during a fiveyear stint ( ) with that franchise. He originally joined the Chiefs as a recipient of the NFL s Minority Coaching Fellowship in 89. He later served as a scout ( 90-91, 95) and also coached defensive backs ( 92-94). Born in Fort Monmouth, NJ on April 27, 1954, Edwards served as Tampa Bay s assistant head coach/dbs coach under Tony Dungy from Edwards concluded his college career as a DB at San Diego State in 76 and signed as a rookie free agent with Philadelphia ( 77-85). In 135 career starts with the Eagles, he established a franchise record with 38 INTs, and started in Super Bowl XV. Edwards concluded his NFL playing career seeing duty in seven games for the Rams and Falcons in 86. He then coached DBs at San Jose State ( 87-89) prior to his arrival in the NFL ranks with Kansas City in 90. THE HEAD COACHES TONY DUNGY NFL Head Coach: 12th Year NFL Coach Overall: 27th Year NFL Overall: (.652) Regular Season: (.663) Postseason: 9-8 (.529) Record w/ind: (.763 Record w/tb: (.563) AFC West Exp: 3 Yrs - KC ( 89-91) College: Minnesota ( 76) Tony Dungy was named the 17th head coach in Colts history on January 22, In five seasons with Indianapolis, he has guided the Colts to five playoff appearances, four AFC South titles, two AFC Championship Games and a victory over Chicago in Super Bowl XLI. Dungy previously served six seasons ( 96-01) as the head coach of Tampa Bay, earning four playoff appearances, including a berth in the 99 NFC Championship Game. Dungy owns 128 regular season victories and is only the sixth coach to post 100 or more regular season games in the first 10 years as a head coach. Born in Jackson, Michigan on October 26, 1955, Dungy began his NFL coaching career as a defensive backs coach for Pittsburgh in 81. He was promoted to Steelers defensive coordinator in 84, a role he held through the 88 campaign. A former Chiefs assistant coach, Dungy spent three years ( 89-91) as KC s defensive backs coach. He then enjoyed a four-year stint ( 92-95) as defensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings. A QB at the University of Minnesota ( 73-76), Dungy played three NFL seasons as a defensive back with Pittsburgh ( 77-78) and San Francisco ( 79). EDWARDS VS. THE COLTS (2-3) Herm Edwards has faced the Colts five times as an NFL head coach and has faced Tony Dungy on three occasions. P Jerrel Wilson owns the distinction of being the youngest player to ever start at QB for the Chiefs when he subbed for an injured QB Len Dawson at Boston (11/17/63). Wilson was 21 years, 1 months and 13 days old. The six youngest players to open a game at QB for the Chiefs all did it on the road. The most recent signal caller to start for Kansas City who was younger than Croyle was QB Todd Blackledge (D1-83), who made his initial start at Pittsburgh (9/2/84) at 23 years, 6 months and 7 days old. Blackledge was also the last Chiefs draftee to start a contest for the club, doing so at Seattle (9/20/87). TONY DUNGY S COACHING DISCIPLES Four current NFL head coaches served as assistants under current Colts head coach Tony Dungy during his tenure in Tampa Bay ( 96-01). In a circuitous NFL coaching twist, current KC head coach Herm Edwards replaced Dungy as KC s secondary coach in 93 when Dungy left to take the defensive coordinator post in Minnesota. Tomlin then replaced Edwards as the Bucs secondary coach in 2001 when Edwards departed Tampa to become head coach of the N.Y. Jets. The Edwards/Dungy relationship dates back to 77 when the duo played against one another in the Hula and Japan Bowl college all-star contests. Hunt served as the guiding force behind the formation of both the American Football League and the Kansas City Chiefs franchise. Few individuals helped change the face of America s favorite game for the better than this quiet Texan. Hunt played a key role in the AFL-NFL merger talks in the 60s and actually coined the term Super Bowl. As part of a year-long tribute to Hunt in 2007, the Chiefs will wear a commemorative patch that prominently features the American Football League logo to serve as a reminder of Hunt s formation of the AFL and the lasting impact that league has made on the game of professional football. True to Hunt s humble styles, the letters LH are subtly displayed on the football of the AFL logo, symbolizing the fact that the Chiefs Founder always put the best interests of the league ahead of his own. The patch will be affixed to the left chest of both KC s jerseys, meaning this piece of woven symbolism will be worn over the heart of every Chiefs player. GONZALEZ S RECORD-SETTING CAREER Eight-time Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez owns 65 career TD catches, the most by a tight end in NFL history. Gonzalez ranks second in NFL history among tight ends in receptions (776) and receiving yardage (9,354), trailing only Shannon Sharpe (815-10,060). Gonzalez owns 21 career 100-yard receiving games, the most in KC history and third-highest total in NFL annals by a TE, trailing only Kellen Winslow (24), and Jackie Smith (22). Gonzalez has a reception in 108 consecutive contests, meaning only Ozzie Newsome (150) has a longer streak by a TE. Gonzalez is on pace to finish the year with 97 receptions. He owns the franchise single-season record with 102 catches in He is on pace to finish the year with 1,144 receiving yards, which would mark the third 1,000- yard season of his career. He had 1,258 yards in 2004 and 1,203 yards in He is on pace to become the first TE in NFL history to record 900 receiving yards five straight years. In four career regular season starts against the Colts, Gonzalez has 16 receptions for 271 yards (16.9 avg.) with three TDs. He posted eight catches for 125 yards (15.6 avg.) with 2 TDs in a win at Arrowhead (10/31/04). NFL RECORD BOOK, TIGHT ENDS, CAREER RECEPTIONS RECEIVING YARDS TOUCHDOWNS S Sharpe 1. 10,060 S. The MVP of SB XLI, Manning topped the NFL with a passer rating last season and is the first QB in NFL history to throw for more than 3,000 yards in his first nine seasons. The Colts Pro Bowl receivers comprise one of the NFL s most dangerous duos. WR Marvin Harrison (D1-96) produced his eighth straight 1,000-yard campaign a year ago and WR Reggie Wayne (D1b-01) topped the 1,000-yard barrier for the third consecutive season in RB Joseph Addai (D1-06) ranks fourth in the NFL with 760 rushing yards and is third in the league with seven rushing TDs. He combines with TE Dallas Clark (D1-03) to round out the Colts weapons. Pro Bowl C Jeff Saturday anchors the offense line along with Ts Ryan Diem (D4-01) and rookie Tony Ugoh (D2a-07) as well as Gs Jake Scott (D5a-04) and Shawnee, Kansas native G Ryan Lilja. Out of the 16 LBs enshrined in the Pro Football HOF, only Nick Buoniconti (32), Jack Ham (32) and Sam Huff (30) own more career INTs. Edwards has returned four of his 28 INTs for TDs, giving him more INT return TDs than any Hall of Fame linebacker. Edwards has six career TDs (four INT returns, two fumble returns). In addition, Edwards 1,584 career tackles also rank fifth among active players. His 818 tackles with KC are the fifth-highest tally in Chiefs history, needing 10 more to overtake CB Kevin Ross (827) for fourth. Dating back to 96, no NFL active NFL linebacker owns more takeaways (39) or has started more consecutive games (146). 4 KC Will Need a Strong Team Effort to Secure Its First-Ever Victory at Indianapolis by Pete Moris Edwards, Dungy Are All About the Postseason Dating back to the 2001 season when Herm Edwards was in his initial campaign as head coach of the N.Y. Jets, only Colts head coach Tony Dungy (6) and Patriots head coach Bill Belichick (5) have guided their squads to more postseason appearances than Edwards (4). Dungy led Tampa Bay to the postseason in 2001 before taking over the Colts fortunes in 2002, where he has led that squad to five straight playoff berths. Dungy and Edwards were key figures in the resurgence of a Buccaneers franchise that had suffered 14 consecutive losing seasons before their arrival in 96. The Chiefs are seeking to become the first team in NFL history to rebound from an 0-2 start in two consecutive years and still make the playoffs both of those seasons. MOST PLAYOFF BERTHS, ACTIVE COACHES, Tony Dungy (Tampa Bay, Indianapolis) 2. 5 Bill Belichick (New England) 3. 4 Herm Edwards (N.Y. Jets, Kansas City), Mike Holmgren (Seattle) A Good Start is a Must For Kansas City The Chiefs defense held the Colts out of the end zone in the first half of last season s playoff contest at Indianapolis (1/6/07). Kansas City would like a repeat performance of that effort this week against a Colts squad that ranks fifth in the league with 117 first-half points. KC has given up a total of 12 points (4 FGs) in the first half of its last three games and hasn t given up a first-half TD since a win vs. Cincinnati (10/14/07). The Chiefs own a 9-3 record when holding a halftime lead under Herm Edwards, including each of KC s last two victories. Since Tony Dungy joined the Colts in 2002, Indianapolis owns a 55-7 (.887) regular season record when tied or ahead at halftime, including a 24-3 (.889) mark at the RCA Dome. The Colts are just (.444) when trailing at halftime during the same timeframe and have been behind in just 11 games at home over that span, posting a 5-6 (.455) record in those contests. The Colts trailed 23-7 in a loss last week at San Diego (11/11). Chiefs-Colts Sack Stats Protecting the passer will be a key for both squads in Sunday s contest. Colts DE Dwight Freeney registered 2.0 sacks in the Colts 23-8 playoff win vs. KC (1/6/07). Freeney owns 60.0 career sacks with 37.5 of those QB takedowns coming at the RCA Dome. However, Freeney owns just 5.5 sacks in his last 12 home contests, a figure that includes a 3.0-sack effort vs. Cincinnati (12/18/06). That means that Freeney has been held without a sack in eight of his last 12 regular season games at the RCA Dome. Only New Orleans (6.0) has allowed fewer sacks than Indianapolis (10.0), Arizona (10.0) and New England (10.0). QB Peyton Manning was sacked 3.0 times in a loss vs. New England (11/4). The Chiefs have 23.0 sacks in Kansas City has recorded 2.0 or more sacks in six contests this season, including all four of the club s wins. Edwards, Dungy Both Put a Premium on the Turnover Column Kansas City s Herm Edwards and Indianapolis Tony Dungy both stress the importance of playing smart football and not turning the ball over. Kansas City is 8-2 under Edwards when owning a positive mark in the turnover column. The Chiefs have posted a +4 turnover mark (10 takes/6 gives) in their four wins in The Colts are 39-5 (.886) with a positive turnover mark under Dungy, including a streak of 14 consecutive wins. Indianapolis also boasts a 19-4 (.826) mark at the RCA Dome with a positive turnover differential. Indianapolis was -3 (3 takes/6 gives) at San Diego (11/11), marking the first time the Colts have been negative this season. In its six regular season losses dating back to 2006, Indianapolis is -6 (10 takes/16 gives). In 19 wins over that same span, the Colts are +21 (37 takes/16 gives). KC s Defense Tough in the Red Zone, Goal-to-Go Situations Kansas City s defense is at its best where it matters most inside the scoring zone. The Chiefs lead the NFL in both Red Zone defense and goal-togo defense. KC is permitting opponents to score TDs just 31.6% of the time inside the 20-yard line, giving up just six TDs on 19 opponent trips inside the KC Red Zone. The league average in Red Zone TD percentage is 50.9%. The Chiefs are just as good in goal-to-go situations, boasting a league-best 37.5% TD percentage, giving up just three TDs on eight goal-to-go drives. On average, NFL defenses permit TDs 66.8% of the time in those situations The Colts offense ranks 13th in the league, registering TDs 53.7% of the time in the Red Zone. Indianapolis is 12th in the NFL in goal-to-go situations, producing TDs 68.2% of the time (15 TDs on 22 drives). However, the Colts are adept at scoring from any point on the field, particularly in the passing game. Exactly 43.8% (7 of 16) of the Colts TD passes have covered 20 yards or more, including four scoring strikes from 35 yards or more. In total, the Colts have completed 32 passes of 20+ yards, the fifth-highest total in the league. KC s offense owns 25 completions of 20 or more yards to tie for 13th. NFL LEADERS, RED ZONE & GOAL-TO-GO DEFENSE RED ZONE GOAL-TO-GO Team TDs/Drives (%) Team TDs/Drives (%) 1. Kansas City 6/ % 1. Kansas City 3/8 37.5% 2. Baltimore 9/ % 2. Baltimore 6/ % 3. Philadelphia 13/ % 3. Green Bay 5/ % Picking Off Manning is a Must for the Chiefs Colts QB Peyton Manning owns a 5-1 lifetime record against the Chiefs, including a 3-1 mark in regular season play. In his six career appearances vs. Kansas City, Manning has 13 TDs and six INTs, numbers that translate into a rating. The Chiefs defense was effective against Manning in the first half of the club s 23-8 playoff loss at Indianapolis (1/6/07). Kansas City limited Manning to a 56.7 rating in the first two quarters of that contest as the Colts QB completed 19 of 26 passes for 161 yards with no TDs and two INTs. Manning was picked off a total of three times in that contest, including two INTs by CB Ty Law, who owns five career postseason INTs off of Manning. Picking off Manning more than once greatly increases a club s chance of victory against the Colts. Manning owns an (.779) regular season record in games when he throws just one or no interceptions. However, his record is just (.275) when he throws two or more INTs. Manning threw a career-high six INTs in a loss at San Diego (11/11). Dating back to the start of the 2001 campaign, the Colts QB is 6-15 (.286) when suffering two or more INTs. The Chiefs own a 21-8 (.724) record dating back to 2001 when forcing two or more interceptions. Manning owns a 49-8 (.860) regular season record with a rating, including a streak of 11 straight wins. He will face a KC defense that has held QBs to a 76.6 rating in 2007, the 11th-lowest mark in the NFL. QB PEYTON MANNING CAREER VS. KC (REG. SEASON & PLAYOFFS) Date Site Comp-Att. KC s defense is allowing opposing offenses to score just 18.1 ppg, a figure that ranks eighth in the league. Holding the Colts at or under the 20-point plateau will be a target that KC will be shooting for this weekend. Dating back to 2006, the Colts have been held to 20 points or less in four of their six regular season losses, averaging 18.8 ppg in those six setbacks. The Colts only regular season home loss since the start of the 2006 campaign was a setback vs. NE (11/4). The Chiefs have won their last two road outings and have allowed a total of 26 points (13.0 ppg) in wins at San Diego (9/30) and at Oakland (10/21). Keeping the Colts under the 30-point barrier will be paramount. Since Tony Dungy arrived in Indianapolis, the Colts are 34-2 (.944) in the regular season when scoring 30 points or more, including a 20-1 (.952) mark at the RCA Dome. The Colts have won 24 straight games when hitting the 30-point plateau. Their last loss in such a circumstance was a setback at Arrowhead (10/31/04). The average score of the last six Chiefs-Colts contests (4 reg. season, 2 postseason) dating back to 99 has been 30.5 to 23.8 in favor of Indianapolis. Chiefs Special Teams Making a Positive Impact in Field Position Kansas City s special teams have played a key role in helping put opponents in poor field position this season. Opponents average starting position after a Chiefs kickoff is the 24.1-yard line. Only Tampa Bay (23.6-yard line) and Jacksonville (23.8-yard line) have fared better in that category. The Chiefs have forced opponents to start eight drives inside their own 20 after a KC kickoff. KC currently ranks sixth in the NFL in gross punting (46.2) and is seventh in net (38.7). P Dustin Colquitt led the NFL with a 39.3-yard net average in 2006 and has dropped 14 punts inside the 20 this season. In fact, in just his third season with the Chiefs, Colquitt already ranks second in franchise annals with 63 punts inside the 20, trailing only P Louie Aguiar (117 from 93-98). In total, the Chiefs are tied for sixth in the league, forcing opponents to start 27 of drives inside their own 20-yard line. KC s specialty units also got on the scoreboard last week when S Bernard Pollard blocked a punt out of the end zone for a safety, marking the third blocked punt of Pollard s two-year NFL career. 7 LAST GAME Broncos 27, Chiefs 11 November 11, 2007 Arrowhead Stadium 77,368 DENVER KANSAS CITY A precious opportunity to gain a leg up on the entire AFC West slipped away in a devastating two-minute span for the Chiefs. Instead of having a win over all three divisional opponents, Kansas City dropped a game to the Broncos by a score at Arrowhead Stadium. Clinging to an 8-6 halftime lead, Kansas City turned the ball over on its first two possessions of the second half and watched Denver convert them into a quick 14 points. The Chiefs would never recover. A pair of first-quarter field goals dotted the scoring early on. The Broncos took the opening kickoff and marched 42 yards in eight plays before converting a 44- yard K Jason Elam field goal. The Chiefs then capitalized on an interception by LB Derrick Johnson as K Dave Rayner knocked in a 38-yard attempt. S Bernard Pollard gave the Chiefs a special teams boost early in the second quarter. Following a CB Karl Paymah interception, the Broncos were backed up at their own two-yard line. A three-and-out series forced P Todd Sauerbrun to punt from the back of his end zone, where Pollard beat his man and blocked the kick out the back of the end zone for a safety. Pollard s third career blocked punt gave the Chiefs their first lead of the day 5-3. Kansas City came up empty following the ensuing free kick and saw Denver regain the lead moments later. QB Jay Cutler converted a pair of third-and-longs with completions to WRs Brandon Marshall and Brandon Stokley, setting up an Elam 50-yard try that hit the crossbar and bounced through for a 6-5 Denver lead. Huard would lead the Chiefs on an 11-play, 57-yard scoring drive to retake the lead before halftime. Huard hit TE Tony Gonzalez for 10 yards before back-to-back strikes to WR Dwayne Bowe (nine catches for 105 yards) moved them into field goal range. Rayner s 36-yard field goal gave KC an 8-6 lead, which it would take into the half. Things got off to a disastrous start for Huard and the Chiefs in half number two. Huard was picked off by CB Dre Bly on the opening possession of the third quarter, giving Denver the ball at the KC 31-yard line. The visitors would need just three plays to break RB Selvin Young into the open for a 20-yard TD run and a 13-8 lead. Then on the very next play from scrimmage, Huard was sacked and stripped by DE Elvis Dumervil at the 17-yard line. LB Nate Webster scooped up the loose ball and ran it in to the end zone for the Broncos second score in the half s opening 1:30. Trailing 20-8, QB Brodie Croyle would enter the game after Huard was injured on the Dumervil sack. Croyle would promptly convert three consecutive third downs with passes to his receiving trio of Bowe, WR Eddie Kennison and WR Samie Parker. The drive would stall at the Denver 20-yard line and Rayner would make his third field goal of the day to make the count late in the third quarter. Kansas City tried to make it a one-score game a few minutes later, but a 53-yard field goal try from Rayner hooked wide left. Cutler used the short field to increase the lead, finding Stokley on a 23-yard pass, then bootlegging into a 18-yard TD pass to TE Daniel Graham to stake a commanding lead with 10:44 remaining. Croyle and the Chiefs would have three more possessions before the final gun, but were unable to cut into the lead on any of the three tries. On Kansas City s final drive Croyle completed five passes and marched the team down to the Denver three-yard line, but a sack on fourth-and-goal solidified the Broncos win. DEN Elam, 44-yard field goal (8-42, 3:48). KC Rayner, 38-yard field goal (6-19, 1:20). KC Punt blocked out of end zone for safety. DEN Elam 50-yard field goal (10-34, 3:40). 12 LAST TIME Colts 23, Chiefs 8 January 6, 2007 RCA Dome 57,215 KANSAS CITY INDIANAPOLIS The Chiefs fell behind 16-0 in an AFC Wild Card contest at Indianapolis and never could find the offensive rhythm to get back into the game, falling by a score of 23-8 at the RCA Dome. The Colts outgained the Chiefs by a 435-to-126 margin in total yards and limited Kansas City to just one-of-11 on third downs. Despite a valiant defensive effort by Kansas City that held the Colts third-ranked offense out of the end zone for over 40 minutes, Indy shut down the Chiefs offensive attack. The Colts dominated nearly every category of the first half, but KC s defense kept them in the game by forcing three QB Peyton Manning INTs and relinquishing three first-half FGs, instead of TDs. The Chiefs went three plays and out on each of their six first-half possessions and the Colts capitalized on three of their ensuing drives. On Indianapolis first drive rookie RB Joseph Addai ripped off runs of 10 and nine yards to set up a 48-yard field goal. On the Colts second drive Manning and WR Marvin Harrison converted on third-and-eight with a 42-yard pass to the Chiefs 25-yard line. Indianapolis would reach the KC one-yard line, but like they did on the first drive the Chiefs defense forced them to settle for a 19-yard K Adam Vinatieri field goal and a 6-0 lead. The Chiefs squandered a golden opportunity to take the lead in the second quarter. CB Ty Law who made his 13th postseason start intercepted Manning for his fifth postseason INT and returned it to the Colts nine-yard line. RB Larry Johnson ran the ball to the two, setting up third-and-goal. However QB Trent Green fell on third down after being stepped on as he pulled from center. Things got worse for Kansas City when K Lawrence Tynes 23-yard field goal try hit the left upright, leaving the score at 6-0. Kansas City dodged another bullet when rookie S Jarrad Page picked off Manning at the KC two-yard line with 1:50 left in the first half. However, once again the Chiefs offense couldn t move the ball and the Colts were able to sneak in a third field goal, this time from 50 yards out, to make it 9-0 at intermission. Manning would throw his third INT of the game to start the second half, as Law notched his fifth career playoff pickoff of Manning. The Chiefs couldn t convert the turnover into points and instead watched Indianapolis rattle off a 12-play, 89-yard TD drive. Manning completed four passes before Addai scored on a six-yard TD run to increase the Colts lead to With 3:38 remaining in the third quarter, the Chiefs finally notched their initial first down of the game on a six-yard pass from Green to TE Tony Gonzalez. That jumpstarted the offense as they would rattle off 60 yards en route to a Green-to-Gonzalez six-yard TD. A successful two-point conversion from Green to TE Kris Wilson cut the Colts lead to 16-8 after three quarters. The one-possession deficit would not last long however as the Colts engineered a back-breaking, nineplay, 71-yard scoring drive that finished with a Manning-to- WR Reggie Wayne five-yard TD and moved Indianapolis ahead by a 23-8 margin. The Chiefs still had hope with 4:00 left when they moved the ball to the Indy 26-yard line, but Green was sacked and stripped by DE Robert Mathis. Indianapolis would register its third turnover of the game on Kansas City s final possession, clinching the Colts 23-8 win. IND Vinatieri, 48-yard field goal (10-39, 4:51).
