2 victors Wolverine fans are fired up for their new head coach, Jim Harbaugh. They expect him to restore the glory of U-M football. To get you hyped, the Bentley Historical Library lends us images of that storied past. Special thanks to Greg Kinney, athletics archivist bl Old 98 : Tom Harmon barrels ahead against Michigan State in At halfback, Harmon led the nation in scoring and was a consensus All-American in 1939 and 1940 and won the Heisman Trophy, the Maxwell Award and the Associated Press Athlete of the Year in bl One of the all-time greats: Ron Kramer catches a pass in 1956 against UCLA. Kramer won nine varsity letters in football, basketball and track. He was a consensus first-team All- American in 1955 and a unanimous first-team All-American in His jersey was retired after his senior year, and he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and the University of Michigan Athletic Hall of Honor in In the NFL, Kramer became a key player on coach Vince Lombardi s first NFL championship teams in 1961 and The Ann September

4 The fields bl Humble beginnings: Football at Regents Field, The orignal grandstand, which seated 400, burned in The Sigma Alpha Epsilon house can be seen in the background, at State Street and Park Place. bl Upgrade: Kickoff of U-M vs. Cornell at Ferry Field, Ferry Field opened in 1906 and had a capacity of 46,000. It s now an outdoor track and field facility. bl A long and heated rivalry: U-M vs. Ohio State, 1902 at Regents Field bl A big dig: Michigan Stadium was built in 1927 at a cost of $950,000 and had an original capacity of 72,000. bl Bigger! Construction of steel bleachers in 1949 raised the capacity of Michigan Stadium to 97,239. His Michigan teams never won a national championship, but they finished ranked in all but one season, and placed in the final top 10 of both major polls 16 times : no coaches : William McCauley 1896: William Ward 1900: Langdon Lea 1924: George Little : Elton Wieman : Fritz Crisler : Bump Elliott : Gary Moeller : Rich Rodriguez 2015-: Jim Harbaugh 1891: Frank Crawford, Mike Murphy : Frank Barbour : Gustave Ferbert : Fielding Yost : Fielding Yost : Harry Kipke : Bennie Oosterbaan : Bo Schembechler : Lloyd Carr : Brady Hoke Crawford Murphy Barbour Harry Kipke s Wolverines won two national championships. He is one of three U-M coaches, along with Fielding H. Yost and Bo Schembechler, to lead teams to four straight conference championships. Fielding Yost s teams won six national championships and 10 Big Ten conference titles. His 1901 team beat Stanford 49 0 in the 1902 Rose Bowl, the first college football bowl game. Bennie Oosterbaan was a threetime first team All-American for the U-M football team, two-time All- American basketball player. He coached U-M football, basketball and baseball.
