Georgia State (5-4) Noon (Central), Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010 Atlanta, Ga. l Georgia Dome (71,250) Cardinals will stay indoors for second-straight week Coach Ray Woodard s Lamar University Cardinals will play their secondstraight indoors game Saturday when they take on Georgia State in a noon (Central) kickoff in Atlanta s 71,250-seat Georgia Dome. Last week, the Cardinals yielded a 31-6 decision to the University of North Dakota to fall to 3-5 on the season. Georgia State, which came up a tad short in a wild loss at South Alabama Saturday afternoon, is 5-4 on the season and 4-2 in the Georgia Dome, where the Panthers drew a crowd of 30,237 for their season-opener against Shorter and are averaging 17,024 through six games. The Cardinals scored first against North Dakota as quarterback Andre Bevil connected with flanker Marcus Jackson for a 36-yard touchdown on the first play of the second quarter. North Dakota then ran off 31 points over the middle quarters to pull away. The Cards were held to 49 yards in the second half. Like Lamar, Georgia State struck first -- on a Drew Little to Sidney Haynes pass of 2 yards -- in its Saturday game, but South Alabama took control with a 24-point second quarter. Little completed 20 of 34 passes for 214 yards and two touchdowns, and he also scored on a pair of 1-yard sneaks. The Panthers yielded a yard edge to the undefeated Jaguars, who also beat Lamar, 26-0 in Beaumont on Oct. 16. Bevil s passing stats absorb another blow After averaging passing yards through six games, Lamar quarterback Andre Bevil has suffered a significant setback over the past two games. He went 15-for-35 for a season-low 104 yards against South Alabama, and he was 14-for- 26 for 117 yards in Saturday s loss to North Dakota. His per-game average is now yards. The 6-foot-1 junior from Tyler Lee by way of Navarro College needs four yards against Georgia State Saturday to move into 11th place, 11 yards to join the Top 10, 19 yards to take over ninth place and 38 yards to surpass Chris Lafferty, who had Lamar s eighth-best, single-season total of 671 yards in If Jackson maintains his average of 79.2 receiving yards per game over the Cardinals final three outings, he will finish the season with 872 yards which would put him third on the alltime single-season list. Jackson s catch high this season is six -- attained in the season opener at McNeese State and matched in LU s win at Southeastern Louisiana. His yardage high is 126, accumulated on four catches against Sam Houston, and he has gone over 100 yards in two other games -- with 123 yards vs. McNeese and with 112 vs. Langston. Logan moves closer to Lamar s kick return record With his 21-yard kickoff return against North Dakota Saturday afternoon, Octavious Logan improved his season kickoff return total to 551 yards, putting him in easy striking distance of Herbert Harris school record of 566 kickoff return yards set during the 1982 season. Logan, a 170-pound junior transfer from East Mississippi Community College, broke a season-long return of 74 yards against Sam Houston State, and he finished that game with 161 yards on five kickoff returns, putting him just two yards shy of Harris school record of 163 kickoff return yards against Texas State in For the season, Logan has a team-best 173 rushing yards, 19 receiving yards and 551 kickoff return yards for a total of 743 all-purpose yards, giving him a 91-yard lead over Marcus Jackson for the team lead. Jackson, who had 36 receiving yards vs. North Dakota, has season totals of seven rushing yards, 634 receiving yards and 11 punt return yards. Davis, Allen garner Player of The Week honors Kevin Davis and Chad Allen were Lamar s Player of the Week winners for the North Dakota game. Both Davis, a sophomore tight end, and Allen, a freshman defensive back, were first-time choices of Lamar s coaching staff, Davis for Offensive Player of the Week and Allen for Defensive POW. Davis, a 6-foot-5, 255-pounder from Pearland by way of Navarro College, caught three passes for 21 yards in the North Dakota game. He had a long catch of 11 yards. The three receptions were his first of the season, although he had appeared in four other games this season. Allen, a 5-11, 180-pounder from Coldspring, logged two tackles, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble. He has been involved in 13 tackles through the Cardinals first eight games this season. The forced fumble and fumble recovery were both his first for the season. Lamar s coaches chose not to recognize a Special Teams Player of the Week for the North Dakota game.

3 Just Playing The What If Game Head Coach Ray Woodard Ray Woodard is a huge man -- 6-foot-6 and 290 pounds, to be exact -- who has taken on a huge challenge -- that of reviving Lamar University s football program. Woodard s challenge is to return to Lamar, to Beaumont and to Southeast Texas the excitement that accompanies a competitive collegiate football team. Woodard was named the eighth football coach at Lamar University by President James Simmons and former Athletics Director Billy Tubbs on May 19, Woodard came to Lamar after three seasons at Navarro College - the first two as defensive coordinator and the final season as head coach. His 2007 squad went 9-3 and advanced to the conference playoffs for the first time in six seasons. His first Lamar team is off to a 3-5 start in the school s first season since Navarro beat defending national champion Blinn College on consecutive weeks before rolling past Kilgore - the SWJCFC regular-season champion - on the road to earn the school's first bowl bid since the 1990s. Navarro claimed a win over Georgia Military in the Pilgrim's Pride Bowl to finish the year ranked fourth in the NJCAA national poll. For his efforts, Woodard was named the SWJCFC Coach of the Year. From , Woodard served as the head football and track coach at Burton (Texas) High School, with the Panthers winning the district title in track in He spent two years as the defensive coordinator at Livingston (Texas) HS from and one season at Trinity HS in Trinity went 7-3 in Woodard spent four seasons as a defensive coordinator in NFL Europe, one season with the Frankfurt Galaxy and three with the Scottish Claymores. Woodard made a strong first impression in NFL Europe as his Galaxy ranked first in the league in total defense and led the league in five other defensive categories. Woodard's other professional coaching experience came as the general manager/head coach for the Houston Outlaws ( ) of the Regional Football League and as defensive coordintor of the Texas Terror (1996) of the Arena Football League. Woodard s first experience at the NCAA level came in 1998 when he was the defensive line coach at Louisiana-Lafayette. Lineman Danny Scott registered eight sacks, which ranks fourth in the ULL single-season list. From Woodard was the defensive coordinator at Kilgore College and recruited more than 200 Texas high school student-athletes. The Rangers appeared in back-to-back Shrine Bowls in 1989 and Kilgore had a 9-2 record in 1990, won the conference championship and was ranked as high as No. 6 in the country. Woodard also had a very successful playing career, from his days at Corrigan-Camden HS to Kilgore College and the University of Texas to five years in the NFL. After earning 13 letters in four sports at Corrigan-Camden High School from , Woodard was a two-time All-America selection as a defensive tackle at Kilgore College from The Rangers finished the 1980 season ranked No. 2 in the NJCAA rankings after posting a 10-1 record and winning the TJCFC Championship. Woodard then finished his college career at the University of Texas under coach Fred Akers. The 1982 team went 9-3 and finished the season ranked 17th nationally. As a senior in 1983, Woodard and the Longhorns posted a perfect 11-0 regular season mark, captured the Southwest Conference championship and finished the season ranked fifth in the nation. Texas led the nation in total defense, yielding just 212 ypg along with 9.5 ppg. Woodard was then selected in the eighth round of the 1984 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers. He spent the next five seasons with the Chargers, Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs. He was a member of the Broncos' 1986 AFC Champion and Super Bowl team. As an unclassified member of the FCS this season, Lamar is ineligible for team or individual ranking in either the Southland Conference or NCAA weekly statistical reports. The Atlanta native and former head coach at Georgia Tech, Alabama and Kentucky was introduced on June 12, 2008, eight weeks after the football program was officially launched on April 17. Curry brought 17 years of experience as a head coach in the Southeastern Conference and in the Atlantic Coast Conference -- including winning Coach of the Year honors in both leagues -- as well as an All-Pro playing career in the NFL, and, most recently, national notoriety as a college football analyst for ESPN. In the NFL, Curry participated in three Super Bowls and two Pro Bowls and was part of three championship teams (1965, 1966 and 1970). As a center, he snapped the ball to legendary quarterbacks Bart Starr and Johnny Unitas, and he played for two of the most highly-regarded coaches in professional sports history in Vince Lombardi and Don Shula. His college coach, Georgia Tech s Bobby Dodd, is an icon in Southern football annals. Curry entered the coaching ranks at Georgia Tech in 1976 and eventually ascended to head coach in 1980.

Georgia State flaunting high-scoring ability The 34 points put up by Georgia State against South Alabama Saturday were 10 more than the undefeated Jaguars had allowed in the 14 games they have played since starting their football program in For the season, the high-scoring Panthers are averaging 30.2 points and yards of total offense per game. Lamar s corresponding averages are 13.8 points and yards per game. The Panthers scoring high this season was 55 points vs. Savannah State. Looking Ahead After playing Georgia State Saturday afternoon, Lamar s football team will play at home for the first time in four weeks when it takes on South Dakoa in a 6 p.m. game on Nov. 13 in 16,000-seat Provost Umphrey Stadium. South Dakota walloped Northern Colorado 34-6 Saturday to improve to 4-5 on the season. The Coyotes play their final game in the Dakota Dome this Saturday against Cal Poly, and their game against Lamar will be their season finale. The Coyotes other victories this fall have been over Minnesota, over Northwestern Oklahoma State and over North Dakota. Their losses have been by scores of 38-7 to Central Florida, to North Dakota State, to Cal- Davis, to Northern Iowa and to Southern Utah. South Dakota and Lamar played a home-and-home series against each other in 1959 and The Coyotes won the first game 41-9 in Vermillion, S.D., and the Cardinals avenged that defeat in Beaumont the following year. The Cardinals victory over South Dakota in 1960 enabled them to finish their season at 8-4.
