16 IOWA VS. AKRON GAMES NOTES Iowa extended its streak of starting the game on offense to 30 consecutive games... Iowa s safety was the first recorded by the Hawkeyes since 10/10/98 in a win over Northwestern... Iowa scored 23 points in the first 6:50 of the game... Iowa improved its record in the month of August to Iowa had two running backs rush for over 100 yards, as Fred Russell had 170 and Jermelle Lewis rushed for 123. Both scored a pair of touchdowns. Iowa s 37 points are the most points ever scored by Iowa in one quarter. The previous best, 35 points, was at Illinois in Fred Russell scored his second career TD on a 44-yard run. He scored his first career TD in the season-opener last season against Kent State. The 44-yard run is a career-longest run from scrimmage for the junior. Russell finished the game with a career-high 170 rushing yards. His total against Akron (170) is more than he rushed for during the 2001 season (141 yards and one TD). Kevin Worthy s 72-yard fumble return for a touchdown was the first time a Hawkeye accomplished the feat since Eric Thigpen returned a fumble 29-yards at Purdue (10/31/98). It was Iowa s first defensive touchdown since Chris Smith returned an interception 33 yards against Miami, OH (9/8/01). Worthy s return was also the second longest fumble return in Hawkeye history. Dayton Perry registered an 84-yard return against Purdue (10/22/60). Maurice Brown caught his first touchdown pass when he recorded a 56-yard reception. It was just the fourth reception of his career, and his next reception resulted in a 36-yard touchdown. PK Nate Kaeding set the Iowa record for consecutive PATs when he connected on seven against Akron. Kaeding now has 46, breaking the old mark of 42, which was set by Rob Houghtlin in Kaeding added a pair of field goals against Akron for a total of 13 points. Sophomore Jermelle Lewis scored his first career touchdown on a one-yard run in the second quarter. He later added a second touchdown on a two-yard run on fourth down. Fred is someone that we ve been really excited about and he performed really well today. Jermelle Lewis, we ve been talking about over the last two years. Today it was good for him to get out and actually perform on the field. On the offensive line: They were really ready to play today from kickoff. They played like a group and that s what we expected them to do. They sense what each other is doing. It takes time for a group to develop that kind of cohesion and it looks like it s to the point where we re getting there. Now we have to prepare for the Miami (OH) game. They ve been hyping this game up for quite some time. It s going to be a wild environment where we have to come prepared to play. AKRON COACH LEE OWENS: Yes, I was surprise that they scored as much as they did, but I wasn t surprised that they came out ripping and roaring. I take the blame for some of our poor tackling. In our preseason, I was so concerned about being ready and not having anyone hurt, that I think we didn t do enough hard blocking and tackling. But that s fundamental football and we can take care of that. We did better in the second half with our fundamentals. Yes, I think we could have done better in the second half with Charlie (Frye) in there, but he took some hard hits in the first half, and we also need to get some experience for Nick (Sparks). No, this is not an unusual situation with our backup quarterback playing multiple positions. We need to have Nick touch the ball as many times as possible, as a quarterback or a receiver. That s also what he wants. Iowa has a couple of pretty good running backs. But we ll see other good running backs the rest of the season. We just have to do better with our overall defense.
