2 Mission & Impact Statements Mission The Nashville Burners provides youth from diverse segments of the community the opportunity to excel in athletics at the highest level of competition, while learning to work as a team and to exhibit good sportsmanship. Giving youth a productive outlet for their time and energy not only builds character, integrity and self-confidence, it benefits the community by discouraging youths from getting into trouble or into less socially desirable activities. Background Nashville Burners Youth Basketball, Inc. is an organization committed to building character, integrity and self confidence in youths through competition in basketball on a local, state and national level. It was organized as a Tennessee not-for-profit corporation in 2nd Q 2008, but its organizers and officers have previously operated a basketball team on a volunteer, non-incorporated basis. The Nashville Burners basketball team (the Burners ) has been operating for seven years under the leadership and coaching of William S. Cummings and William S. Cummings, Jr. The Burners have competed in tournaments under the auspices of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), the Youth Basketball Organization of America (YBOA), and Youth Incorporated (YI) among others. The organization currently has four teams consisting of players in the 12 year old, 13 year old, 14 year old, and 15 year old bracket in The youth players have come from the Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County (Tennessee) area, as well as from adjacent counties in Middle Tennessee. Impact Accomplishments of the last year include: 1. The Burners placed 3rd in the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) State Tournament for the 11 yr. old age bracket. 2. The Burners placed 1st in the Youth Basketball Association of America (YBOA) State Tournament for the 11 yr. old age bracket. 3. The Burners have qualified to play in both the AAU and the YBOA National Tournaments for The organization has provided an opportunity for several of its youth players who come from single parent homes to learn from and be guided by positive male role models filled by the coaches, and provide some respite time for the single parent. 5. The Burners conducted several fund-raisers, such as candy bar sales, which are carried out by the players and supervised by the coaches and parents. This teaches the kids responsibility and the value of hard work. 6. The organization added two more teams this year. In addition to the team in the 11 year old division, there is now a Burners team in the 9 year old division and 10 year old division. Goals for next year include: 1. Achieve or surpass the level of competitive accomplishments realized in Continue to recruit new team members who can benefit from the guidance and instruction provided by the Burners. 3. Increase and improve fundraising events by the youth players, guided by the coaches and parents, to enable the team to attend state and national tournaments. 4. Host a summer basketball camp for youths in the Nashville area. 5. Host one or more basketball tournaments as a fundraiser to benefit the Burners and off-set expenses. 6. Add additioanl teams in different age divisions. Needs The most pressing need is for additional funding to off-set expenses and allow the Burners to provide additional benefits to the community. Last year the team qualified to play in the National AAU Basketball Tournament held in New Orleans, but could not attend due to the expenses involved. In the absence of donations and contributions, the expenses can only be met by the parents of the players, which is not possible for many of the players' families. If the organization is successful in reaching its goal of hosting a summer camp next year, there may also be a need for additional volunteers, since most of the players' parents would have to be working during the time the camps are held. 3 Recreation & Sports / Basketball Secondary Organization Category Youth Development / Youth Development Programs Tertiary Organization Category Recreation & Sports / Amateur Sports Competitions Areas of Service Areas Served TN - Davidson The organization is located in and primarily serves Davidson County. Practices are currently held at Stratford High School, but in the recent past were also held at Dalewood Baptist Church and Dalewood Middle School in the East Nashville area of Davidson County (zip code 37216). Most of the team members reside in Davidson County, but we also have players from Rutherford and Williamson counties. Board Chair Statement I know from personal experience it is important to provide an opportunity for not only improving our players' athletic skills, but perhaps more importantly, to provide an opportunity for growth and development in areas of sportsmanship, integrity, team work and character. I participated on a youth basketball team, and the experience is one of the most important and positive in my life. It is exactly this experience that has motivated me to dedicate my time and energy to the Nashville Burners. I do not have a biological child on the team, (although I consider all of the players "my kids") and my only motivation is to help these youth players to grow, mature and develop. I am also fortunate and blessed to work alongside my father, who is also a coach of the team. He served as one my coaches when I played, and having the opportunity to now coach with him is rewarding for me personally, and his experience and guidance is a great benefit to our players as well. So this is now a second generation organization, although we have operated it on a non-incorporated basis for several years until recently. We have enjoyed many successes, including qualifying for the National AAU Basketball Tournament for the past two consecutive years. But the vision for the future includes many goals and challenges. We want to grow and expand into areas beyond just competing on the basketball court. We envision a summer camp, hosting basketball tournaments, and expanding the number of teams into more age divisions. To meet these goals, we need funding, that is only available through the generosity of donors and foundations whose goals are consistent with those of the Nashville Burners Youth Basketball, Inc. CEO Statement I know from personal experience it is important to provide an opportunity for not only improving our players' athletic skills, but perhaps more importantly, to provide an opportunity for growth and development in areas of sportsmanship, integrity, team work and character. Having received our IRS tax exempt status in April 2009, we are making every effort to get our organization before as many potential donors and grant issuers as possible. This is especially challenging with no paid or full time staff. 9

Most small tax-exempt organizations whose annual gross receipts are normally $50,000 or less ($25,000 for tax years ending after December 31, 2007 and before December 31, 2010) are required to electronically submit Form 990-N, also known as the e-postcard, unless they choose to file a complete Form 990 or Form 990-EZ instead.
