One team will be in possession of dodge balls. To tag, the person with possession of the ball can take three steps and tag with the ball. Once tagged, the person will have to do 10 jumping jacks/crunches/push-ups etc. Introduction to Handball Briefly describe the game of team handball and the rules. The games that will be played will have some connection to the game of team handball. 8 5 Dodge balls Use the boundary of either the basketball court (for a large class), or volleyball court (smaller class) Ball cannot be thrown to tag opposing team. The ball can be passed between team members. Teams will switch roles (possession of the dodge balls). Use a YouTube video to give a visual of what the game will be like. Handout rule sheets and teaching cues and mechanics pages.

Applying Activity Time: 30 minutes Closure Assessment Strategies Challenges/ Modifications/ Adaptations/ Accommodations NOTES: Keep Away -15 minutes Dodgeball -15 minutes Stretching and review of class lesson. Observation Daily participation mark /5 One team dominating during ball tag Injuries Disability Split class into groups of 3. Each group will receive a different coloured pinnie. Teams must keep the ball away from other teams. Three steps can be taken before a pass. Can only hold the ball for three seconds. Equal teams attempt to hit each other with the dodge balls. Can only take three steps with ball before the throw. If opposing player gets hit What skills did we work on? What sports do these skills relate to? Review Team Handball Level of participation Came to class prepared in proper attire Limit the amount of time a team in ball tag can have the ball. Can ref or score keep help set up. Depending on the injury, have a workout planned that avoids the injured area (e.g. sprained ankle Upper body workout). Modify the games to include everyone. 9

APPENDIX F: LESSON PLANNER Date Lesson Passing Grade 9 Class 2 of 12 Student Learning Outcomes Movement Fitness Management Safety Personal and Social Management Healthy Lifestyle Practices K.1.S1.B.3 K.1.S1.C.1 S.1.S1.B.2 K.3.S1.A.1 S.3.S1.A.1 Lesson Components Learning/Teaching Strategies Learning/Teaching Strategies Teacher Notes (e.g., equipment, safety rules, organization, key points, curricular connections) Activating Activities Entry Activity Warm-up Time: 10 minutes Acquiring Activity Time: 10 minutes Ball Tag (same warm up as previous lesson) 2 students are it. They work as a team to pass the ball to each other and tag other students. The tagger can tag only when they have the ball. When players get tagged, they join the taggers. Circle Drill In groups of six, students will be positioned evenly around in a circle. Students must pass the ball in any direction, across the circle or to the player standing next Handball Pinnies for the taggers. Modifications: Split gym up into two and have two games going for maximum participation. Explain and demonstrate the different ways of passing: Overhand passes to players across from you Wrist passes to players beside you. 10

Applying Activity Time: 30 minutes Closure Assessment Strategies Challenges/ Modifications/ Adaptations/ Accommodations NOTES: to them. Must keep feet moving when they are not in possession of the ball. 2 on 1 Groups of three 1= defenders, 2=offenders Offenders try to get the ball to the opposite side of the gym with passing. If the defender intercepts the ball, he/she is now an offender. Switch roles when you successfully reach the end. Wall Ball/Flicker Ball Two teams. Start with a jump ball. Objective: Get the ball to the opposite end field (touch wall with ball in hand). Stretching and review of class lesson. Observation Teacher Assessment Task Card Daily participation mark /5 2 on 1: Player is having a hard time getting possession of the ball Players are only using one type of pass Wall Ball: Not enough student participation Players are to always show a two-hand target to the passer if they are ready to receive the pass. Play the width way of the gym. Cannot move when in possession of the ball. Handball Can only take 3 steps. Ball cannot touch the ground (possession will go to opposing team). Pinnies Handball Discuss what was learned in the lesson: What type of passing was used today? Level of participation Came to class prepared in proper attire Change to 2 on 2: a better chance to work on fair play. Have players rotate through all passing styles. Add another ball in play. Allow students to dribble the ball. Must pass to everyone on the team before touching the wall. 11

APPENDIX F: LESSON PLANNER Date Lesson Catching Grade 9 Class 3 of 12 Student Learning Outcomes Movement Fitness Management Safety Personal and Social Management Healthy Lifestyle Practices K.1.S1.B.3 K.1.S1.C.1 S.1.S1.B.2 K.3.S1.A.1 S.3.S1.A.1 Lesson Components Learning/Teaching Strategies Learning/Teaching Strategies Teacher Notes (e.g., equipment, safety rules, organization, key points, curricular connections) Activating Activities Entry Activity Warm-up Time: 10 minutes Organized Circle Pass Standing in a circle of six people, the first player will call out the name of the person they will pass to, and then pass the ball. The next player will do the same thing as they pass to a different person in the circle. Everyone in the circle must have passed at least once before it goes back to the first person. Players will practice catching above and below the waist. The same order starts again, saying the name and passing the ball. Demonstrate catching above/below waist. Handball/dodge ball, pinnies Students will be asked to use the overhand throwing or wrist passes that they used in the previous lesson. Students will also need to show their two hand target when their name is called. Once students start passing the ball faster, more handballs can be added in. 12

Acquiring Activity Time: 20 minutes Applying Activity Time: 20 minutes To add more movement/competition between groups, once a group has been able to catch the ball five times by each player, they must do either: 10 jumping jacks/ 5 pushups/ 10 crunches/ run and touch all corners of the gym and then sit down. Partner Dodge ball Partners are on the same team. If a partner gets hit they must immediately go into the ready position with a two-hand target and feet moving in spot. They will only come out of this position if their partner passes them the ball and is successfully caught from at least five meters away. If both partners are hit at the same time, they must side step shuffle all around the gym in the out of bounds area of the basketball court to resume in the game. Flicker Ball This game is a lot like wall ball or ultimate Frisbee. Players will only be able to get a touchdown by passing and catching the ball. Players cannot move when they are in possession of the ball. Ball must be caught in the end zone to make a touchdown. If a ball in caught or intercepted by the opposing team, the ball goes to that team. Demonstrate how to catch above and below the waist. Basketball court is in play. Each pair will need a dodgeball. Pair students off by opposite sex. Pinnies, Pylons, two handballs. Students will be split up into four teams of six players. The gym will be divided in half lengthwise with pylons. End zones will be either end of the court e TEAM A VS. TEAM B e n n d d z z o Pylon dividing game line o n n e TEAM C VS. TEAM D e 13

Closure Assessment Strategies Challenges/ Modifications/ Adaptations/ Accommodations NOTES Stretching and review of class lesson. Observation Teacher Assessment Task Card Daily participation mark /5 Flicker ball: Some players are not being passed the ball. What is a good recovery for catching? Level of participation Came to class prepared in proper attire Make modification that all players must have the ball passed to them before their team can make a touchdown. Dribbling line Students line up on one side of the gym and dribble while jogging with their right hand/left hand/ cross over etc. Students then pair up with a partner One person plays defence and tries to swat the ball away. Switch roles. Dribbling Keep Away 4 players will not have a ball. They must knock the ball away from the other players in order to obtain the ball. Modification: Everyone will have a ball. They must dribble with control while they try to swat other player s ball away. 20 team handballs. Applying Activity Time: 20 minutes Dribble Freeze Tag This drill emphasizes dribble control and space awareness. The continuous dribbling will help players avoid the three-second violation if you can t find an open teammate. The chaser starts by trying to tag the teammates while they try to keep control of their dribble. Any player that is tagged (or goes out of team handballs Divide into four groups of six. There will be one chaser and one saver. (Everyone will have a ball to dribble except for the saver). Each group will occupy a quarter of the basketball court.

Closure Assessment Strategies Challenges/ Modifications/ Adaptations/ Accommodations NOTES bounds) must freeze and continue to dribble in place. The saver will show a ready position with a two-hand target to the person who is in frozen dribble mode. The person will pass the ball to the saver, and the saver will pass the ball back to unfreeze the teammate. The player is back to dribbling normally. Choose another player to be it and continue the game until all players have been chasers. Stretching and review of class lesson. Observation Teacher Assessment Task Card Daily participation mark /5 One player dominating in keep away Injuries Disabilities What did we learn? What is important to consider when dribbling? Can you list three situations when using the dribble is advantageous? Level of participation Came to class prepared in proper attire Make them dribble with their non-dominant hand. If they have a note, create a workout for them. Modify games to fit their abilities. (e.g. Use a beach ball to dribble instead of a basketball for gross motor skills) 16

Acquiring Activity Time: 25 minutes Applying Activity Time: 20 minutes run backward. D) When pointing in all four directions, players will have to run and touch all four walls Introduce students to checking, set shot block, and jump shot blocks. Partner Blocking Face your partner 2 meters apart. Partner is the shooter with a ball (any extra balls can be put beside shooter). As the defender your back will be to the wall (6 meters behind so the ball has a barrier) The shooter throws 10 balls, at about 50% speed, past defender, but within reach. Defender must block the balls. The shooter will shoot all around defender, overhead and either side. Monkeys in the Middle Two monkeys guarding each thrower. When their thrower is throwing, the monkey will have to try a set/jump shot block with their arms fully extended. If the shot is blocked, both monkeys become the throwers. Four Corner Pinguard Teams are not able to block directly in front of their pins. They must try to guard them outside of the hula hoop barrier. Players will have to either set/jump shot block in order to protect their pins If a teams pins all go down, the last team that knocked the pin down will gain that playing area plus the members from the losing team (Wall) 2m Have an opportunity to try out the different types of shots. Each team will have five pins with hula hoops around them. Gym will be divided into corners with four benches. When a team dominates a corner, the bench between them is removed. 20 pins and hula hoops 4 benches 20

APPENDIX F: LESSON PLANNER Date Lesson Individual Tactics: Attack and Defend Grade 9 Class 8 of 12 Student Learning Outcomes Movement Fitness Management Safety Personal and Social Management Healthy Lifestyle Practices K.1.S1.B.1 K.3.S1.A.1 K.4.S1.B.1b K.1.S1.B.3 S.3.S1.A.1 S.1.S1.B.2 Lesson Components Learning/Teaching Strategies Learning/Teaching Strategies Teacher Notes (e.g., equipment, safety rules, organization, key points, curricular connections) Activating Activities Entry Activity Warm-up Time: 10 minutes Gauntlet On the command, two team members will run from the end line of the gym to the other. If they successfully make it without getting hit with a ball to the opposite enplane their team receive 1 point, they will immediately turn around and run back to try and get 2 points. If they do get hit with the ball, below the shoulders, a point will not be allotted to their team. The runners teams turn is over when all runners have had a turn. The throwing team must have at least one 4-8 gator balls Divide class into two teams, one team at the end of gym in a double line, and the other team across the basketball court sidelines (on either side). 24

Acquiring Activity Time: 20 minutes Applying Activity Time: 20 minutes Closure Assessment Strategies Challenges/ Modifications/ Adaptations/ Accommodations NOTES foot on the basketball side line when they throw. Explain how to use fakes in team handball. Ten Passes Game Match up player to player on opposite teams to guard. The attacking team tries to complete 10 consecutive passes against the defense. If the ball is dropped, thrown out of bounds, or intercepted the other team takes possession. Turnovers also result from a 3-second rule violation. If the attacking team completes 10 passes it is awarded 1 point. Play a game of Team Handball No dribble. Stretching and review of class lesson. Observation Teacher Assessment Task Card Daily participation mark /5 Gauntlet: Not enough physical activity (too much standing around) Attackers use fakes without the ball to free themselves to receive a pass and fakes with the ball to free themselves to pass to a teammate. Divide groups into four teams of six. Two teams will play against each other on a half court. First team to 5 points wins. To increase difficulty, first team to 10 points wins. To decrease difficulty, decrease the number of players on each team. Four groups of six. Have two groups sit out and switch every 5 minutes. What are some tactics you can use to attack and defend? Why is faking a good skill in this sport? Level of participation Came to class prepared in proper attire Variation: The entire team will run from end to end. If anybody gets hit, they must join the throwing team. 25

APPENDIX F: LESSON PLANNER Date Lesson Offensive Combinations: Teamwork Grade 9 Class 9 of 12 Student Learning Outcomes Movement Fitness Management Safety Personal and Social Management Healthy Lifestyle Practices K.1.S1.C.1 K.3.S1.A.1 K.4.S1.A.2b S.1.S1.A.1 S.3.S1.A.1 K.4.S1.B.2a S.1.S1.B.2 Lesson Components Learning/Teaching Strategies Learning/Teaching Strategies Teacher Notes (e.g., equipment, safety rules, organization, key points, curricular connections) Activating Activities Entry Activity Warm-up Team run Each teammate has a role given to them: 1 st runs around the volley ball court twice 2 nd continuous push-ups inside the court 3 rd continuous crunches inside the court 4 th continuous jumping jacks inside the court Students will be in groups of four. # 2-4 will have to do their exercises until #1 is done running their laps. Once the runner is done, everyone shifts up to the next number and takes on the different role. Acquiring Activity Time: 20 minutes Teach students how to execute crossing, the pick (and roll), and attack the gap. Overload Support: 4 vs. 3 Offense can only play by attacking the gap and Team handballs Place two cones on the court to designate playing area. Four players will form an offensive team consisting of a left wing and three backcourt 26

supporting each other. No one can shoot from the backcourt. All scores must come by driving through a gap and shooting from the 6-meter line. Each shot attempt, defensive tie-up, or other turnover counts as one possession. Play five possessions then switch offense and defense. players. Three other people and a goalie form a team and play defense. Applying Activity Time: 25 minutes Closure Assessment Strategies Challenges/ Modifications/ Adaptations/ Accommodations NOTES Have three games of this playing at the same time. If there is time, have teams verse others. Play a game of Team Handball With dribbling Stretching and review of class lesson. Observation Teacher Assessment Task Card Daily participation mark /5 Team handball: Not a lot of passing Girls are not getting the ball passed to them. Four groups of six. Have two groups sit out and switch every 5 minutes. Why is it important to work as a team? Level of participation Came to class prepared in proper attire Take the dribbling out of the game and keep it to three steps then pass. Make a rule that the ball has to be passed alternately between males and females. 27

Catching team must be spread out and try to catch the ball/retrieve it. Catchers will form a single line and pass the handball over and under (alternating between each person) twice. The person in the front will immediately have to run to the back of the line etc. During this time the throwing team will each have a ball where they must take turns shooting at a net. They will continue shooting Two teams of throwers and catchers. One handball to be thrown. Basket of handballs to be shot on the net for points. Teams will alternate roles. 28

Acquiring Activity Time: 20 minutes Applying Activity Time: 20 minutes Closure Assessment Strategies Challenges/ Modifications/ Adaptations/Accommodations for points from the 6-meter line until the catching team has finished passing over and under. Teach students how to execute the Defensive Help Triangle Circle Runner Coverage: 3 vs. 2 The attackers continuously pass the ball between themselves while the defenders step out and recover so the ball handler and circle runner are covered at all times. The passer should raise the ball to shooting position and allow the defender to check before passing. The goal of the defenders is to prevent a complete pass to the circle runner in a 30- second period. If prevented a pass, defenders receive 1 point, and the teams switch roles for another 30- second period. If passes are completed, the attacking team receives 1 point. Continue the drill until one team earns 5 points. Play a game of Team Handball Stretching and review of class lesson. Observation Daily participation mark /5 Circle Runner coverage: May be too easy for students. p. 115 in Team Handball Steps for Success book. (Clayton & Dwight) Two people form a team and position themselves on defense at the 6-meter line. Circle runner is placed between both defenders. Two other teammates complete the attacking team by positioning themselves across from the defenders at the 9-meter line. Reminder: Step out, check backcourt, recover to defend circle runner. Four groups of six. Have two groups sit out and switch every 5 minutes. Why are defensive combinations important? Why is communication important? Level of participation Came to class prepared in proper attire Make it more difficult by increasing the drill time to 45 seconds. 29

Players may go into the neutral zone to retrieve a stationary ball if the ball is on their side of center court, but they must return behind the attack line before throwing the ball. Bench ball The catcher crosses over to the opposite side of the court and stands on a bench in the others team s zone. A neutral zone surrounds A large cardboard box and gator balls. Divide the group into two teams and distribute the gator balls. Players may not touch the box at any time Two benches, pinnies, several gator balls Keep the same groups from the first game. Have each team designate a catcher. 30

Applying Activity Time: 25 minutes Closure Assessment Strategies Challenges/ Modifications/ Adaptations/ Accommodations NOTES each team s bench to prevent players from encroaching on the benches. The object of the game is to throw the ball to the team catcher and have them catch it. If the ball is caught by the catcher, the thrower joins the catcher on the bench. The game continues until an entire team is standing on their bench. If a player falls from the bench, they must return to their team s side and try again. Opponents may block throws and intercept passes, but may not touch anyone standing on the bench, or enter the neutral zone. Play a game of Team Handball Stretching and class discussion. Observation Daily participation mark /5 Box Ball: Not enough activity Bench Ball: Unstable bench Variations: Start all players but one on the bench. The remaining players start with several balls and as players on the bench catch balls, in a balanced position, they join their teammate on the floor. The first team to get all players off the bench is the winner. Four groups of six. Have two groups sit out and switch every 5 minutes. How do the games we played relate to Team handball? Level of participation Came to class prepared in proper attire Variation: Use more than one cardboard box. Use a mat on the floor for catchers to stand on. 31
