1 THE PREVIEW Mister Rogers Neighborhood Forward Kevin Rogers, who averaged 12.3 points and a team-high 8.5 rebounds (fifth in Big 12), was named an All-Big 12 selection by both The Associated Press (third team) and the league s coaches (honorable mention). He was also selected to the Big 12 All- Underrated Team by the league s media. He recorded 12 double-doubles last season, including eight in league games the fourth-highest total among Big 12 players. Rogers was named to the 2007 Big 12 All-Improved team after a sophomore season in which he doubled his scoring (12.8 from 6.1 ppg) and nearly doubled his rebounding from his freshman season (7.6 from 4.0 rpg). Drew Receives Don Nelson Award Baylor head coach Scott Drew received The Don Nelson Award from the Dallas All Sports Association at the organization s annual awards banquet in September. The Don Nelson Award is presented to a college or professional basketball coach for great achievement both on and off the court of play in the spirit of NBA player and coach Don Nelson. Udoh, Diaz Transfer to Baylor Baylor added two NCAA Division I transfers to its roster for the season with the addition of Ekpe Udoh (Michigan) and Duran Diaz (Grambling State). Both will sit out the season season to satisfy the NCAA s transfer policy. Udoh will retain two seasons of eligiblity, while Diaz will retain three. A native of Edmond, Okla., Udoh played two seasons for the Wolverines and averaged 5.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.4 blocks in 67 career games (31 starts). He led the Big Ten with 92 blocks as a sophomore in and was named to the Big Ten All-Defensive Team. Udoh's 92 blocks set a new Michigan sophomore blocks record (second-highest total in school history), surpassing the previous record of 91 set by Chris Webber in Udoh's 159 career blocks rank fifth all-time on U-M's all-time blocks list. The Wolverine's "sixth-man" as a freshman in before entering the starting lineup nine games into his sophomore season, Udoh played in all 67 games during the and seasons. Diaz, a native of Kennedale, Texas, averaged 7.8 points and 2.0 rebounds in 21.6 minutes for the Grambling State Tigers as a true freshman. Driscoll Voted Top 10 Assistant Hoops Coach Baylor assistant basketball coach Matthew Driscoll has been voted the No. 9 assistant coach nationally in a survey of coaching professionals conducted and published by FoxSports.com. FoxSports.com released a ranking of 20 high-major and 10 mid-major coaches from its poll of more than 450 coaches and basketball professionals. Of Driscoll, FoxSports.com senior basketball writer Jeff Goodman wrote: "The 43-yearold spent six years under Larry Shyatt five at Clemson and one at Wyoming before hooking up with Scott Drew. In fact, Driscoll was at Valparaiso with Drew for a matter of weeks before heading to Waco and helping orchestrate one of the most impressive turnarounds in recent memory." Aaron Bruce Playing Professionally in Australia Aaron Bruce is continuing his dream of playing professional basketball after signing a two-year contract with the Adelaide 36ers of the National Basketball League in his native Australia. Bruce finished his stellar college career as the seventh-leading scorer in Baylor history with 1,330 points. Last season, Bruce helped guide the Bears to just their fourth 20-win season in school history and their first trip to the NCAA Tournament since He was a three-time All-Big 12 selection, including third-team honors as a freshman in Bruce, who led the nation's freshman in scoring in , was also named Big 12 Freshman of the Year by the Kansas City Star and San Antonio Express-News that same season. Bruce is a veteran of several Australian national teams that included representing the Australian Boomers at the 2006 FIBA World Championships in Japan. PRESEASON NOTES WHAT THEY HAVE SAID ABOUT... Baylorís Projections NBADraft.net No. 14 Yes, Scott Drew...has made [Baylor] a legitimate threat in the Big 12. Baylor has all the talent and freshman Anthony Jones should really add to that. Kevin Rogers is the best player you might not have heard of. Blue Ribbon No. 16 At the risk of sounding repetitive, to paraphrase Drew, there's a difference between being the hunter as opposed to the hunted...on paper, there is no question that Baylor should be better this time around, if not significantly so...as Drew puts the final touches of the Rebuilding Job of the Decade, if not the Century, we like Baylor to win games and push Oklahoma and Texas into the final week of Big 12 play. The Bears should be at worst a No. 4 seed on Selection Sunday and with one of the nation's elite backcourts, they have a legitimate chance of playing into the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament. Collegehoops.net No. 17 With a guard-dominated lineup, Baylor will be one of the country's most exciting teams. But the pressing issue is whether anyone outside of all-league forward Kevin Rogers emerges as a force in the frontcourt. Regardless, now that Baylor got over the NCAA Tournament hump for the first time in 20 years, a Sweet Sixteen trip is not out of the question. Athlon No. 19 With one of the most experienced teams in the Big 12, the Bears will be disappointed if they don t advance deeper into the NCAA Tournament after last year s first-round loss. They know they can explode offensively, but they ll need to become a better defensive team to pull out more close games. ESPN.com (Andy Katz) No. 21 The Bears return essentially intact, save Aaron Bruce. And that means Baylor...enters the season as one of the top teams in the Big 12...the Bears, with a 1-2 punch of Curtis Jerrells and LaceDarius Dunn, have enough scoring and now experience to make a run at the league title. Rivals.com No. 28 The Bears have little basketball history...but last seasons breakthrough should not be viewed as an anomaly. All the key pieces return, including a talented group of guards that would start for most Top 25 teams...the Bears will continue to be a difficult matchup because of their offensive ability...but as long as the Bears can at least defend their opponents a bit, they ll be back in the NCAA Tournament. This season, they won t have to sweat another Selection Sunday. Dickie V s Preseason Top 40 No. 30 Scott Drew has rebuilt this program in a short time. Remember the name LaceDarius Dunn! Lindy s Unranked One of the keys to Baylor s continued development is defense. The Bears led the Big 12 in scoring last season but finished last in defense. Baylor s firepower can keep it in almost any game...getting to the tournament last season represented a huge step. Given what Drew has accomplished in a relatively short time, it would be foolish to think the Bears will be content. Baylor is a long shot to win the Big 12 title, but having a shot at all is a feat.
