2 Mission statement The mission of Hot Springs County Recreation District is to provide the safest and highest quality programs to as many as possible. We strive to meet the everchanging recreational demands of the community by offering creative and inventive ways to compete and play, while promoting a culture of respect. Our goal is to improve the quality of life for the residents of Hot Springs County and the surrounding areas through recreation. Recreation Staff Director Anja Abbott Anja Abbott is in her first year as Director of the HSC Recreation District. From Thermopolis, Anja holds a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Wyoming. Bookkeeping Tracy Linko Tracy is in her second year as the bookkeeper for HSC Recreation District. She holds a Masters in Finance and Accounting from Colorado Technical University and has lived in Thermopolis for 5 years with her sister, Susan. A Message from the Hot Springs County Recreation Board to our Volunteers The Recreation Board would like to thank all of the volunteers that allow the Recreation District to serve the community. A coach can be on of the most important people in a young person s life. We recognize that being a good coach is demanding of your time and energy. Please understand that your impact on the kids that you coach is extremely significant, and that the lessons those kids learn through sport last a lifetime. 3 Youth Sports Philosophy The Purpose of Sport in Personal Development It s about sports, but it s not all about sports. We will develop as athletes, but also as people. Youth sports are an opportunity to strive, struggle, develop, and have fun. In life, it is rare to have a low-stakes opportunity to overcome adversity, be a part of a team, experience success and defeat, and be accountable for your actions. Sports prepare people to deal with the ups and downs of life. Program Goals/Objectives Sport-specific, fundamentally-based, age-level appropriate goals that are based on vertical collaboration with Middle and High School coaches. Roles in Sport Each Person at an Event Can Only Perform One Role Role of the Player Play the game for fun, learn, put the team first, play respectfully, be accountable for your own actions. Role of the Coach Coach for the love of the game and of your athletes, put the welfare of the athletes before winning, teach the game to the best of your abilities, be a role-model, work to improve as a coach, reward the effort not the outcome, keep the game simple and fun. Role of the Parent Encourage, attempt to relieve competitive pressure not increase it, release your child to the coach and the team, look at opponents as friends involved in the same experience, accept the result of each game do not make excuses, accept the judgment of coaches and officials, demonstrate winning and losing with dignity. Role of the Official Do his/her best job to call the game fairly and to the best of his/her ability. Coach-Parent and Coach-Official Interactions Please do not talk to coaches immediately after a game, or discuss an issue in front of the players. Call the coach to set up a meeting time to discuss your player outside of games or practices. Remember that you and the coach have the same goals, but different roles. Appropriate Topics to discuss with a Coach Mental and Physical treatment of your child, Ways to help your child improve, Concerns about your child s behavior, your child s injury. Inappropriate Topics to discuss with a Coach Playing time, Team Strategy or Play Calling, Other members of the team. Please do not criticize officials. Please understand that they are doing the best that they can in situations that call for quick judgments. Criticizing the officials is not beneficial to players, and builds bad habits. 1

4 Youth Sports Programs Youth Football - Physical Required Registration: July 19 - August 23 Late Registrations will NOT be accepted Age Groups: 1st/2nd, 3rd/4th, 5th/6th ( school year) Fee: $ $55.00 equipment deposit Parent Meeting & Equipment Checkout: August 23, 6 pm at the Armory Coach Meeting: August 21 First Practice: August 27 Youth Volleyball Registration: July 19 August 23 Late Registrations will NOT be accepted Ages: 3rd 6th grade ( school year) Fee: $20.00 Parent Meeting: August 23, 5:30 pm at the Armory Games will be played Monday nights at the High School. A current physical (summer 2018) is required for ALL youth football participants. Equipment deposit will be returned at the end of the season when equipment is checked in and is not damaged. Girl s Basketball Registration: Sept. 24 Oct. 16 Ages: 6 12 Fee: 6 7, $ , $ , $20.00 Parent Meeting: October 18 Coaches Meeting: October 17 First Practice: October 22 Stay tuned for a Jr. Bobcat Girls Basketball Camp! 2

5 Youth Sports Programs Family Basketball Turkey Shoot Date: November 15th Time: 6:45 pm Location: The Armory Building Adult-kid teams compete with each other in timed basketball shooting contests to win a free Thanksgiving turkey. Event is free to all par. Turkeys are given out to winners in each age group. Boy s Basketball Registration: Dec. 3 Jan. 2 Ages: 6 12 Fee: 6 7, $ , $ , $20.00 Parent Meeting: January 4 Coaches Meeting: January 3 First Practice: January 7 The Youth Basketball season will not interfere with Middle School wrestling. Start Smart Basketball Registration: February 4 March 4 Ages: 3 5 Fee: $15.00 Dates: Mondays at 6, March 4 April 8 Start Smart Sports introduces kids to sport by teaching them the basics in a fun, interactive way. Parents participate in the program with their children. Other Start Smart programs offered are Soccer and Baseball. All three Start Smart programs will be available to register for at the same time. 3

6 Adult Sports Programs Adult Co-Ed Volleyball Registration: August 8 September 3 Fee: $200.00/team Organizational Meeting: August 8, 7 pm at the Armory Manager s Meeting: September 5, 7 pm at the Armory Season Start: September 12 Games are Wednesday nights at the High School. There is a regular season followed by a double elimination championship tournament. Rules and schedules will be posted at hscrecreation.com Pickleball Dates: Year-round Location: Armory (when the weather is nice, the program plays at the Candy Jack Park tennis courts) Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in America. A mixture of tennis and ping pong, players hit a wiffleball with wooden paddles over a low net on a badminton-sized court. New players can learn the game quickly, and it can be played by all ages. No experience is required, regular attendees will be more than happy to explain the game to new-comers. Adult Co-Ed Basketball Registration: November Fee: $200.00/team Meeting times and dates are TBA Games are Wednesday nights at the Middle School. Season includes a single elimination championship tournament. Registration forms will be posted at hscrecreation.com 4

7 Adult Sports Programs Walk Across Wyoming Walkers can sign up to participate in our Winter Walk Across Wyoming program. As the snow falls and the outside becomes treacherous, come to the Armory to get your walk in! Participants will track their laps, making progress on a fictional tour across historic and scenic sites in Wyoming. 1 lap=10 miles. Stretching & Strengthening Yoga The Recreation District offers Yoga at the Armory. Pay at the class to the instructor. For any questions, please contact the Recreation Office at Marge s Sessions: Mondays & Thursdays 9:00 10:30 am Last year, participants walked more than 7,000 miles across Wyoming! Program runs late October through March. When the Armory is not in use Basketball, Volleyball, Tennis, Pickleball, Ping Pong, Board Games, and more equipment are available during office hours. An adult must get permission from the Recreation Office, and all participants must sign in at the Recreation Office to use this equipment. 5

11 About Hot Springs County Recreation District The Recreation Offices are located inside the Armory Building at 728 N Park Street, easily accessed from Highway 20 on the north side of Thermopolis. The Armory is open from 8 am 5 pm Monday through Friday, except for holidays. The Armory Building is available to rent for private parties or meetings. A rental application form is available online at hscrecreation.com or in person at the Armory. HSCRD serves over 600 participants yearly, from seniors to toddlers. The Rec District works with HSCHS athletes and coaches during youth sports seasons, creating Bobcat Pride in our young athletes. Fees for HSCRD Programs are among the lowest in the state. Scholarships and reduced fee applications are also available, allowing us to serve as many as possible in our community.
