2 Scouting the Terrapins Maryland Quickly: Maryland (-, -0 BG) comes to Homewood Field riding the crest of a0- game winning streak, the second-lonest active winning streak in the nation. A Familiar Face: Maryland Associate Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator Kevin Conry is a 00 Johns Hopkins graduate and played four seasons for current JHU coach Dave Pietramala. He was a member of the Blue Jays 00 national runner-up team and helped JHU to three appearances in the Final Four. It Starts With Defense: Johns Hopkins will face arguably the top defense in the nation this week when Maryland comes to Baltimore. The Terps rank eighth in the nation in scoring defense (7.77), have yet to allow more than 0 goals in a game this season and have held 0 of their opponents to eight goals or less. Headlining the defense is returning First Team All-American goalie Kyle Bernlohr, who boasts a 7.59 goals against average and a.56 save percentage. Bernlohr ranks seventh nationally in goals against average and is an impressive 6-6 in his career as Maryland s starting goalie. Rambo, Heacock, Cole Pace Offense: Maryland enters this week s game at Johns Hopkins averaging 0.5 goals per game and the Terps present a balanced unit to defend. The attack trio of Matt Rambo (g, a), Colin Heacock (0g, 5a) and Dylan Maltz (5g, 6a) is talented and dangerous, while midfielders Bryan Cole (5g, 6a), Connor Kelly (g, 0a) and Henry West (9g, 5a) form one of the top first-line units in the nation. Notes of Interest: Maryland has allowed just six extra-man goals in 6 attempts this season and the Terps rank fourth in the nation in man-down percentage (.769) Freshman Austin Henningsen ranks th in the nation in faceoff winning percentage (.6), although he has not played in the last three games The Terps are among the national leaders in clearing percentage (8th.89) and turnovers per game (0th.6) Maryland has currently won eight straight games decided by just one goal dating back to late in the 0 season. 06 Schedule/Results Feb. 0 High Point W/5-0 #7 Yale L/5-8 Mar. 5 vs. # Notre Dame L/-9 Drexel Princeton W/7-5 6 #0 Albany W/0-7 6 # North Carolina W/-8 9 Penn W/-8 Michigan * W/8-7 # Penn State * (OT) W/-0 6 #8 Rutgers W/-8 9 #7 Navy * W/0-5 Ohio State * W/0-8 #9 Johns Hopkins * pm May 5 Big Ten Tournament 5:0 pm/8 pm 7 Big Ten Championship 6 pm * Big Ten Game April Reign: Johns Hopkins has won seven of its last eight games in the month of April and has averaged.6 goals in those eight games. Something BG: Johns Hopkins last five games of the regular season are all Big Ten games. The Blue Jays are 7- all-time in BG regular season play as they posted a - mark in last season s inaugural year and stand at - this season. BG at Home: Johns Hopkins is -0 all-time in Big Ten home games as the Blue Jays topped Rutgers, Penn State and Michigan at Homewood Field last season and added a - win over Ohio State earlier this season. The Race to the BG Tournament: With one game to play in the regular season, there is still much to be decided for the upcoming Big Ten Tournament, which will take place at Johns Hopkins on May 5th and 7th. Three teams (Johns Hopkins, Maryland, Rutgers) remain in the race for the number one seed, while two other three teams (Penn State, Ohio State) are alive in the race for the fourth and final seed. Below is a quick look at the three teams battling for the top spot... the only guarantee at this point among the three is that these will be the top three seeds. All Johns Hopkins home games air on the ESPN family of networks with a majority of the games airing on ESPNU. The most recent contract renewal extends the agreement through the 07 season. Johns Hopkins is the only lacrosse program in the nation - men or women - with its own exclusive national television agreement. the tie-breaker including goal-differential and beyond, just the the most basic scenarios. Johns Hopkins (- BG): Johns Hopkins would earn the top seed with a win over Maryland and a Rutgers loss at Ohio State. A Johns Hopkins loss coupled with a Rutgers win would land JHU the number three seed. Maryland (-0 BG): Pretty simple for the Terps; win and earn the top seed. A loss to Johns Hopkins coupled with a Rutgers win at Ohio State and the Terps are the number two seed. A loss to Johns Hopkins coupled with a Rutgers loss at Ohio State and the Terps are the number two seed. Hopkins Partners With Friends of Jaclyn The Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse team partnered again this year with the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation (FOJ). This is the third time the Blue Jays have partnered with FOJ. The Friends of Jaclyn Foundation s mission is to improve the quality of life for children battling pediatric brain tumors and other childhood cancers and to raise awareness through the Adopt-a- Child, Safe on the Sidelines and Guardian Angel Programs. FOJ does this by pairing the afflicted child and their siblings with local high school and college sports teams. The Blue Jays adopted Connor Durgin, 7, on October 7, 05 and he has been a fixture at games and other team events throughout the season and took part in the pregame meeting with officials and team captains when the Blue Jays hosted Syracuse on March 9. He also made the trip to Penn State and made the Blue Jays call on the coin toss (tails), which JHU won. - -

3 Rutgers (- BG): Rutgers is the number two seed with a win and a Maryland win over Johns Hopkins. Rutgers is the number two seed with a loss and a Maryland win over Johns Hopkins. Rutgers is the number three seed with a loss and a Johns Hopkins win over Maryland. Blue Jays Win First-Ever Big 0 Tournament: Johns Hopkins earned the first conference title in school history with a -6 win over Ohio State in last season s Big Ten title game. The Big Ten sponsored men s lacrosse for the first time in 05. JHU shared the regular season title with Maryland, earned the top seed in the tournament via a head-to-head win against the Terps and then topped Penn State and Ohio State in the tournament to claim the league s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Honoring Our Seniors: Johns Hopkins will honor the seniors on the 06 men s lacrosse team prior this week s game against Maryland. Nine members of the senior class along with graduate student Ben Kellar will be honored with a special pregame ceremony. Craig Madarasz and Connor Reed, who are seniors this year, have an extra year of eligibility remaining and plan to return for the 07 season; they have choosen to participate in senior day activities next season. It s Been a While: The 9 goals Johns Hopkins scored at UMBC on March 0 were the most for the Blue Jays in a regular season game since March 5, 0, when JHU topped Mount St. Mary s 9-9 (JHU did score 9 at Virginia in the first round of the 06 NCAA Tournament). Hopkins matched that 9-goal outburst last Saturday at Michigan in a 9- win. This marks the first time since 005 that Hopkins has scored 9 or more goals in a game more than once in the same season (JHU scored 9+ three times in 005). Yes, They Belong to Pietramala: Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse coach Dave Pietramala missed the games against Syracuse, Virginia, UMBC and Rutgers. Although the team was led by associate head coach Bill Dwan in each of those games, per NCAA policy, Pietramala is credited with the victories () and defeats () in his record. That s 75: The - win against Ohio State on April 9 was the 75th for Dave Pietramala as the head coach at Johns Hopkins. Since returning to Homewood in 00, Pietramala now boasts a record (.78) That s 00: The win against Michigan was the 00th in the college coaching career of Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse coach Dave Pietramala. How about both teams join the same conference in the same year and debut a trophy to be awarded to the winner of the regular season game between the two? That s exactly what happened in 05 as Johns Hopkins (sport affiliate member) and Maryland (full member) both joined the Big Ten and the schools collaborated on the development of The Rivalry Trophy. Unranked Johns Hopkins upset third-ranked Maryland, 5-, to win the regular season game and claim The Rivalry Trophy in the first year of its existence and the trophy has been housed in the Cordish Lacrosse Center since then. It will be on display for photo opportunities before and during Saturday s game at Homewood Field. - -

24 06 Johns Hopkins Men s Lacrosse Notes Game-by-Game Recaps Game - Navy Navy-Marine Corps Stadium February 9, 06 ANNAPOLIS, MD The Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse team picked up its final win of the 05 season when the Blue Jays topped Syracuse by a goal in the NCAA Quarterfinals at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Fast forward just over eight months and the 06 TM team notched its first win in equally thrilling fashion on Tuesday night as the Blue Jays topped Navy, -, in double overtime in the same stadium. The one-goal win marked the th Johns Hopkins-Navy game in the last in the series to be decided by one goal and is the first double overtime game between the two teams since Conor Ford beat the Mids with a goal in a 00 classic that featured topranked Hopkins and second-ranked Navy. Despite leading for nearly 57 minutes in regulation, the Blue Jays were forced into overtime when Navy got back-to-back goals from Jack Ray and Casey Rees both off assists from Kevin Wendel in the final :8 to send the game into extra time. Twice the Blue Jays had golden opportunities to win in the first overtime, but Navy goalie John Connors stopped Holden Cattoni with the Blue Jays up a man and then made a point-blank save on Shack Stanwick a short time later. His counterpart, Hopkins Brock Turnbaugh, made a crucial save of his own in the first overtime period, which ended with Navy s Matt Rees drawing an unnecessary roughness penalty with just one second remaining. Working out of the break between extra periods, the Blue Jays worked the ball on the perimeter looking for the right shot, which finally came when junior John Crawley found Stanwick cutting from behind to Connors right and Stanwick went short side with the game-winner 9 seconds into the second overtime. After the teams combined for goals through 5 minutes, the offenses took over in the fourth quarter as they totaled nine goals on combined shots in the final 5 minutes of regulation. With the game tied at 7-7, Hopkins grabbed leads of 8-7 and 9-8 only to have the Midshipmen pull even both times. When Cattoni scored at the 6:55 mark and Ryan Brown followed with his sixth goal of the game 6 seconds later, the Blue Jays had an -9 lead that would hold for just under three minutes. Ray s goal, his third of the game, pulled Navy within -0, but Hopkins held the one-goal lead as the clock ticked under a minute. Connors then posted his only save of the fourth quarter when he stopped Brown in tight and Navy went the other way and eventually Wendel found Casey Rees for the gametying goal with 7 seconds remaining. From there, both teams had chances to win in the first extra period, but Connors and Turnbaugh were up to the challenge. The Matt Rees penalty as the first overtime period ended then set the Blue Jays up with the extra-man opportunity that Stanwick cashed in on to give Hopkins its ninth straight seasonopening victory. The Blue Jays had grabbed an early -0 lead as Crawley struck twice in first six minutes once off a dodge from behind the goal and again three minutes later on sweep across the top and senior Craig Madarasz followed his second strike with a goal right off a faceoff. Navy sliced the three-goal deficit to one with consecutive goals in a 0-second span late in the first quarter. After the Blue Jays turned the ball over on an extra-man chance, the Midshipmen got on the board with an extra-man strike of their own as Wendel blew one home off a skip pass from Patrick Keena. Keena then found the net just seconds later as Matt Rees came up with the loose ball off the faceoff following Wendel s goal and found Keena alone 0 yards from the goal. Johns Hopkins had its three-goal lead back less than four minutes into the second quarter courtesy of back-to-goals by Brown. Stanwick found him alone on the wing off a quick restart with : left in the first quarter and Brown split from right to left and got his hands free from yards out at the :0 mark of the second to make it 5-. Navy had it back to a one-goal game by the four-minute mark of the second quarter as Matt Rees scooped up a loose ball and went coast-to-coast to make it 5- and Wendel capped a long possession with low right-handed shot that found net at the : mark. Hopkins had a two-goal lead at the half as freshman Drew Supinski dodged down the left wing and fired home the first goal of his career and the lead was back to three again midway through the third quarter when Brown completed his 9th career hat trick with extra-man goal off a feed from behind from Stanwick. Like it had earlier, Navy fought back as Greyson Torain and Ray scored back-to-back goals in a span of :0 to make it 7-6. Torain capped a long possession with his goal, while Ray s tally came not long after Hopkins had killed off a man-down situation. Navy finally drew even just over two minutes into the fourth quarter on a beautiful individual goal by Torain, who slipped through two defenders into the slot and fired home a low shot to the far post to knot the game at seven. That opened the scoring in the wild final quarter, which wasn t enough to determine a winner. Brown s six goals push his career total to and run his national-best goal-scoring streak to 5 games. This is the longest streak by a Johns Hopkins player since Terry Riordan s 56-game run from Stanwick (g, a), Crawley (g, a) and Supinski (g, a) were the other multi-point scorers for Hopkins, which got saves from Turnbaugh in his first career start and a -of- performance from Madarasz on faceoffs. BALTIMORE, MD Entering Saturday s game, exactly one spot separated the Johns Hopkins and Loyola men s lacrosse teams in the USILA national rankings. After Saturday s game, the seventh-ranked Blue Jays and eighth-ranked Greyhounds are still separated by just one, but it was Loyola that came out with the extra goal in a 9-8 win before a crowd of,868 at the Ridley Athletic Complex. For the Blue Jays (-), a 6- advantage in the second half wasn t quite enough to overcome a 5- halftime deficit. Johns Hopkins drew within a goal four times in the second half, but Loyola had an answer each time and a save by Grant Limone on Pat Fraser shot with 5 seconds remaining sealed the victory for the `Hounds. They re a good team -- you can t make the mistakes we made did, Johns Hopkins head coach Dave Pietramala noted in the post-game press conference. They are going to capitalize on those and that s what you saw. I was proud of our effort in the second half, but I d like to see more of that in the first half. We kept clawing back, but we could never get over the hump. We just didn t do what we needed to do to win this game. Despite the three-goal halftime deficit, the Blue Jays were within one less than four minutes into the third quarter as Wilkins Dismuke got free inside and scored off a nifty feed from Shack Stanwick and John Crawley dodged from behind the goal and scored just over two minutes later to make it 5-. Hopkins had a golden opportunity to pull even a short time later when Loyola s Zach Davilakos was called for slashing, but the Blue Jays turned it over and Loyola capitalized. Just 50 seconds after the penalty expired it was Zach Herreweyers taking a crosscrease pass from Pat Spencer and firing into an open goal to make it 6-. It was 7-6 at the end of the third quarter after Kyle Marr s first career goal and a Fraser tally were wrapped around a Jeff Chase dodge and score for Loyola. Fraser s goal came with just seconds left in the period and appeared to give the momentum to the Blue Jays entering the final period. That momentum was gone seconds into the fourth quarter as Herreweyers rebound goal and a Brian Sherlock laser to the top shelf from nine yards out gave the `Hounds a 9-6 lead. Marr s second of the game, off another nice feed from Stanwick while the Blue Jays were up a man, pulled the Blue Jays within 9-7 with :9 to play and Crawley came from behind the goal to score again less than three minutes later to make it 9-8. Hopkins had several chances late, including a shot off the crossbar from senior Ryan Brown, a skip pass from Marr to a wide open Brown that didn t quite connect and Fraser s last-minute blast, but Loyola was able to maintain the one-goal lead and hold on for the victory. Loyola had a big statistical advantage in the opening quarter, but led just - after the first 5 minutes as Brown answered Loyola tallies in the first eight minutes before Johnny Giuffreda netted his first career goal with :9 left in the period. Chase and Spencer added second-quarter goals for Loyola, which didn t win a faceoff in the period, but got four saves from Limone to keep the Blue Jays scoreless. For his part, Johns Hopkins goalie Brock Turnbaugh matched his five-save first quarter in the second to keep the Blue Jays close. Craig Madarasz, who won 7-of-9 first-half faceoffs, won the opening draw of the third quarter and Dismuke s tally came 7 seconds into the period. From there, neither team would score more than two in a row, but the three-goal halftime margin was just enough for the `Hounds to lock up the victory. Turnbaugh finished with a career-high 6 saves, while Madarasz finished -of- on faceoffs and added six ground balls. Brown (g, a) and Stanwick (a) paced the Blue Jays with three points apiece, while Crawley and Marr added the two second-half goals. Loyola s nine goals were coupled with six assists for 5 points and Herreweyers (g, a) and Spencer (g, a) combined for eight of those 5. Chase (g) was the only other multi-goal scorer, while Limone finished with 0 saves, including four big ones in the fourth quarter. Johns Hopkins will return to action on Sunday, February 8 when the Blue Jays welcome North Carolina to Homewood Field for the first of four straight home games for JHU. Johns Hopkins (-) began to chip away and used a 5- run over the final 6:9 of the first half to draw within 7-5 at the half. Senior Ryan Brown and freshman Kyle Marr cut the four-goal deficit in half with back-to-back goals that bridged the first and second quarters, but Carolina has its four-goal lead back when Cloutier scored and extra-man goal and Luke Goldstock added one of his own a short time later midway through the second quarter. Facing a four-goal deficit for the second time in the game, Hopkins quickly gained the momentum with a three-goal surge that included goals by Cody Radziewicz, Brown and John Crawley. An unassisted goal by Simpson with 85 seconds left in the second quarter accounted for a 7-5 Carolina lead at halftime. After trailing the entire first half, the Blue Jays finally drew even midway through the third as Stanwick and Brown both scored in a 90-second span with each assisting on the other s tally. As quickly as it was tied, the Tar Heels had the lead back with Pontrello isolating behind the goal and dodging top side twice in less than 0 seconds to make it 9-7. The Blue Jays had a golden opportunity to push the lead to two a short time later, but North Carolina s Brian Balkam came up with back-to-back saves in a span of less than fives seconds to keep the score at -0 and Cloutier s goal that ignited the game-ending five-goal run followed quickly after those stops. 29 06 Johns Hopkins Men s Lacrosse Notes Game-by-Game Recaps Game 6 - Syracuse Homewood Field March 9, 06 BALTIMORE, MD The final chapter in the book about the 06 Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse season won t be written for quite some time. The Blue Jays twice trailed their longtime rival by four in the first 0 minutes of the game, were down by three with less than 9 minutes left and still found themselves down by two with less than three minutes on the clock. There was also the noticeable absence of head coach Dave Pietramala, who missed the game due to an infection in his lower back. Johns Hopkins (-) faced all of that adversity and grabbed the key overtime victory by scoring twice in the final : to force overtime and then won on a rebound goal by junior Wilkins Dismuke :5 into overtime to lift the Blue Jays to their second consecutive win against a team ranked in the top 0. Trailing 0-8 after a two-goal Syracuse spurt turned an 8-8 tie into a 0-8 Orange lead, the Blue Jays got an unassisted goal on an ally dodge by junior John Crawley with : to play to make it a one-goal game. Syracuse faceoff specialist Ben Williams was called for his third violation of the second half on the ensuing faceoff to give the Blue Jays a man advantage. Hopkins nearly turned the ball over on the extra-man, but managed to keep possession and worked out of a Syracuse timeout with :6 on the clock. A one-goal win did not appear to be in the cards for the Blue Jays early on as Syracuse built a -0 lead at the end of the first quarter and doubled that to -0 in the first :7 of the second when Dylan Donahue and Matt Lane scored. Supinski got one back just seconds after Lane s extra-man strike, but Sergio Salcido was at the tail end of some quick ball movement by Syracuse and beat Brock Turnbaugh with a sidearm shot from 0 yards. The four goal deficit was down to three by halftime as Hopkins scored three of the final five goals in a second quarter that saw the teams combine for nine goals on just total shots. Dismuke and Supinski scored consecutive goals to make it 5- with 5:7 left before the half, only to have Jordan Evans and Nick Mariano sandwich goals around a Cody Radziewicz tally for Johns Hopkins in the final :9 to make it 7- at the half. Both defenses buckled down in the third quarter and neither team managed to find the back of the net for the first minutes of the period. As it turned out, it was a Syracuse native who jump-started the Blue Jays as Radziewicz, who grew up in the Syracuse suburbs, completed his first career hat trick with back-to-back goals in a span of seconds late in the period. When the Blue Jays drew an extra-man chance late in the period, sophomore sharp-shooter Patrick Fraser made the Orange pay with a goal with just seconds left in the quarter to pull the Blue Jays even for the first time in the game. The momentum the Blue Jays gained with their three-goal run was gone seconds later as Joe Gillis scored off the ensuring faceoff to give Syracuse an 8-7 lead entering the fourth quarter. Hopkins got an extra-man goal from Fraser just seconds into the final period to draw even again, but Syracuse answered with a Mariano goal in a timer-on situation less than two minutes later and Salcido added one at the 6:0 mark with a perfectly placed left-handed shot on the run into the top far corner. That lead held until Crawley got just enough separation on his dodge with : remaining to beat Hill to the far post and jump-start a wild ending that included Brown s game-tying goal and Dismuke s game-winner. The Blue Jays got eight of their goals on the day from their midfield, which was led by the first career hat trick from Radziewicz and two goals each from Supinski and Fraser. Dismuke added the two goals, while Brown (g, a) and Stanwick (a) also posted multi-point games. Rutgers improves to 8- overall and -0 in the Big Ten, while the Blue Jays slip to 5- overall and 0- in the Big Ten. Rutgers used two key scoring runs, one in each half, to take control and pull away from the Blue Jays. The second, a five-goal spurt that bridged the third and fourth quarters, turned a 9-6 lead into a -6 advantage early in the fourth quarter. The Blue Jays scored three of the first four goals of the second half to slice an 8- deficit to 9-6. A pair of goals by John Crawley and a goal from the crease by Wilkins Dismuke in a four-minute span early in the third quarter made it a three-goal game, but that would be as close as the Blue Jays would get. Josh Jordan s second goal of the game with exactly six minutes remaining in the third quarter jump-started the five-goal run for the Knights, who got goals from Charalambides and Bieda before the end of the period to make it -6 entering the final period and Charalambides and Heningburg struck in the first two minutes of the fourth to put the game away. 33 06 Johns Hopkins Men s Lacrosse Notes Game-by-Game Recaps Game 0 - Ohio State Homewood Field April 9, 06 BALTIMORE, MD It was Homecoming at Johns Hopkins on Saturday as the Blue Jays welcomed Big Ten rival Ohio State to Homewood Field. Nothing unusual about that, at least at Johns Hopkins, as Homecoming is always celebrated around a home men s lacrosse game at Homewood. That may have been the only thing that wasn t unusual about what eventually became a - Blue Jay victory before a crowd of,8. So what was so unusual? How about the end of the game that saw Homewood Field splashed in sunlight two hours and fifteen minutes after the national anthem was played while driving, wind-swept snow filled the air. How about the own goal the Buckeyes provided late in the third quarter, or the Buckeye offense scoring more than nine goals for the first time in more than a month. Then there was Johns Hopkins head coach Dave Pietramala; Pietramala had missed the last four games with an infection in his lower back, but returned to the sideline on Saturday to pick up milestone win number 75 as the head coach at Johns Hopkins. Not unusual at all to see Pietramala coaching the Blue Jays, but he was forced to do so for most of the game from the unusual position of being seated on a motorized scooter. Despite the many twists and turns, Johns Hopkins built an 8-5 lead at the half and pushed that lead to 0-6 early in the third quarter after an extra-man goal by senior midfielder Holden Cattoni. Given another extra-man chance after a penalty shortly after the ensuing faceoff, the Blue Jays had a chance to perhaps put the game away, but Buckeye goalie Tom Carey stopped Shack Stanwick from in tight and Ohio State pounced. Pearson s extra-man goal just nine seconds into the third quarter was answered by consecutive goals by Wilkins Dismuke in transition and Cattoni s extra-man goal that made it 0-6.
