The Game: Top-seeded Johns Hopkins (14-0) takes on fourth-seeded Virginia in the semifinals of the 2005 NCAA Men s Lacrosse Championships. The game is scheduled for approximately 2:00 pm at Philadelphia s Lincoln Financial Field. Last Time Out: Johns Hopkins cruised to its fourth straight Final Four appearance with a convincing 19-9 win over eighth-seeded Massachusetts in the NCAA Quarterfinals at Homewood Field. In a game it never trailed, fourth-seeded Virginia held off fifth-seeded Navy, 10-8 at Homewood Field. Both games were played on Saturday, May 21. The Blue Jays are the only team returning from last season s final four and are making their fourth straight trip to the semifinals. Johns Hopkins boasts an all-time record of in semifinal games. For comparison, only three other teams have even qualified for the tournament 26 or more times: Virginia (28), Maryland (28) and Syracuse (26). Blue Jays Earn Top Seed: Johns Hopkins locked up the number one seed in the NCAA Tournament with the win over Loyola in the regular season finale. Fastest 60: With the win over Marist in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Dave Pietramala tied Ray Van Orman ( ) as the third-fastest coaches to reach 60 wins in Johns Hopkins history. Don Zimmerman ( ) won 60 of his first 68 games, while Henry Ciccarone ( ) won 60 of his first 69. Van Orman needed 70 games to get 60 wins, a mark Pietramala tied with the win over Marist. Pietramala now sports an overall coaching record of (.757), including a (.859) mark at Hopkins. He moved into sixth place on JHU s career coaching victories list with the win over Towson. Brother Act: The Blue Jays have one set of brothers on this year s team, while five other players have older brothers who previously played at Hopkins. Junior midfielder Greg Peyser is the older brother of freshman midfielder Stephen Peyser, while senior attackman Peter LeSueur (Paul), junior midfielder Joe Benson (Bobby), junior goalie Scott Smith (Todd), junior defenseman Andrew DiConza (P.J.) and freshman attackman Michael Doneger (Adam) all followed older brothers to Johns Hopkins. Chip Off the Old Block: Freshman attackman Kevin Huntley doesn t have an older brother who played at Hopkins, but he is following in the footsteps of his dad, Dave Huntley, who was a standout midfielder for the Blue Jays from Dave Huntley earned All-America honors three times during his career and was the national midfielder of the year as a senior. Classic Comeback: The Blue Jays come-from-behind win over Syracuse on March 18 was Hopkins biggest comefrom behind victory in over six years. JHU trailed 7-1 late in the 2nd quarter before rallying for a overtime victory. The last time JHU had erased a six-goal deficit to win a game was on March 6, 1999, when the Blue Jays erased a 9-3 deficit and beat Princeton, Home Sweet Home: The win over Massachusetts extended Hopkins school-record home winning streak to 36 games. The last time the Blue Jays lost a game at home was on March 24, 2001 when Virginia slipped past the Blue Jays, 9-8 in quadruple overtime. That game ranks as the longest in both Johns Hopkins and Virginia history and also represents the only game the Blue Jays have lost at Homewood Field under head coach Dave Pietramala. 4 #4 Virginia (11-3) vs. #1 Johns Hopkins (14-0) / 4 About the Cavaliers Virginia Quickly: Virginia enters the NCAA Semifinals against Johns Hopkins fresh off a gutty, 10-8 win over defending national finalist Navy in the quarterfinals. The Cavaliers Recently: Virginia opened play in the NCAA Tournament with a dominating, 23-9 win over Albany in the first round. The Cavaliers had posted just a 3-3 record in their previous six games before the NCAA Tournament. That stretch followed a 6-0 start before a 9-7 loss at Johns Hopkins on March 26. Head Coach Dom Starsia: The winningest coach in Virginia lacrosse history, Dom Starsia is now in his 13th season as the head coach of the Cavaliers. He boasts a record in Charlottesvile and an all-time record of in 22 seasons. With the win over Navy he tied Sid Jamieson (Bucknell) for 10th on the all-time victories list among Division I college coaches. Ward, Christmas, Rubeor Form Potent Attack: The Cavs may have one of the most talented attack units in college lacrosse in senior John Christmas, junior Matt Ward and freshman Ben Rubeor. Ward leads the team in scoring with 34 goals and 11 assists for 45 points, while Christmas tallied one goal and two assists last week to push his season totals to 18 goals and 19 assists. Rubeor looked very colm in his first-ever NCAA Quarterfinal game as he punched up three goals and two assists for a teamhigh five points in the victory. Dixon, Poskay Lead Midfield: While the attackmen get all the publicity, the Virginia midfield boasts one of the top one-two tandems in the nation in juniors Matt Poskay and Kyle Dixon. Poskay notched his third, four-goal effort of the season in last week s win over Navy, while Dixon added a goal and three assists. Poskay ranks second on the team with 28 goals, while Dixon has 16 goals and 16 assists to his credit. Turner Shines in First Year: Sophomore goalie Kip Turner has excelled in his first season as a starter after backing up All-American Tillman Johnson last season. Turner fashions a 7.02 goals against average and a.574 save percentage. With Turner anchoring the defense the Cavaliers have held 12 of their 14 opponents to nine goals or less and seven to seven goals or less. devillier Among Nation s best: Despite a rough outing last week against Navy s Chris Pieczonka, Virginia senior Jack devilliers is among the nation s top faceoff specialists. He has won 160-of-280 (.571) on the year and has a team-high 91 ground balls. Johns Hopkins has won four overtime games during its current 36- game home winning streak. The current seniors on the Johns Hopkins lacrosse team finished 32-0 at home. During the current 36-game home winning streak the Blue Jays have outscored the opposition, Over the last 25 seasons (1980-present) Johns Hopkins is (.868) at home Seniors Tie Record: The seniors on the 2005 Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse team tied the school record for most wins by one class with the win over UMass (see chart). Hopkins now sports a 53-6 (.898) record since the class of 2005 arrived prior to the 2002 season. More Records: A win over Virginia would not only give the Blue Jays the most wins ever in a four-year period, but would also set records for most wins in a single-season (15) and most wins in backto-back seasons (28). The current team already holds the record for most wins in a three-year period (41). Regular-Season Roll: Johns Hopkins is 48-3 (.941) in its last 51 regular season games. This is the best 51-game regular season run for Johns Hopkins since JHU won 49-of-51 regular season games covering a span from More Rolls: Dating back to the middle of the 2002 season, Johns Hopkins is 50-5 (.909) in its last 55 games (including the NCAA playoffs). Hopkins has now scored 22 goals in an NCAA Tournament games three times in its history (1977 vs. Maryland (W/22-12) / 1994 vs. Towson (W/22-16). 16-Goal Margin Also a Record: The 16-goal margin for the Blue Jays broke the previous school record for largest margin of victory in an NCAA Tournament game. The Blue Jays previous record was a 14-goal win over North Carolina State (20-6) in Back-to-Back: The 22-goal outburst against Marist and the 19-goal barrage against UMass represent the first time in school history the Blue Jays have scored 19 or more goals in back-to-back NCAA Tournament games.
