4 Southland Hockey Association SKATER SKILLS Evaluation Criteria Forwards/Backwards M Weave Without Puck M Weave With Puck Agility Skate Start Position Ready with aggressive bent knee posture and weight forward Quick Acceleration Uses short quick initial strides gradually lengthening as player accelerates Control at Speed Good balanced posture with stick under control and weight evenly distributed Bilateral Stopping Stops effectively both ways with good bent knee posture, head and shoulder turn, and uses both edges Turns With Both Edges On 180 degree turns skater should use both feet with inside foot ahead and good knee bend Keeps Feet Moving Feet always engaged without gliding between turns Strong Turns Drives out of turn with power and acceleration Body Position Hockey stance with knees bent and head up. Comfortable through turns with body lean and low stance Controls Puck Puck remains on stick throughout drill including the finish straight. Uses Both Sides of Stick Through the turns and the weave players should use front and back of stick as appropriate Keeps Feet Moving Skates as same time as handling the puck without gliding Cradles Pucks on Turns Cradles and controls puck on 180 degree turns preventing it from drifting away Efficient Transitions Engages edges with weight transfer and quick turn reducing or eliminating scraping and slowing Acclerates Well Following change of direction skater should immediately begin to accelerate either forwards or backwards Aggressiveness Player Doesn t hesitate but rather bends knees, engages edges and pushes through turns and transitions. Comfortable Both Directions Transitions and turns equally both ways as the situation dictates as of Feb 18, 2014 Page 4 of 13

For BOTH forward and backward directions Turn in both directions Stop in both directions Feet in good position for stability and strength B. Playmaking / Passing / Shooting C. Checking/Competitiveness D. Positional & Team Play Hard & accurate passing, receiving, passing choices, on backhand, unselfish with the puck, presents a good target, receives and retains with control, touch passing For BOTH forehand & backhand Moves puck quickly to moving and stationary targets Vision looks & selects best option Uses board passes, chips, saucer passes Puck Control - Head ups, smooth & quiet, good hands Protects/handles puck in traffic & small spaces; open carry with speed Dekes and fakes on 1 on 1 plays Shows creativity, quickness & deception with puck Ability to maintain control while being checked; makes plays Shooting - Power, accuracy, quick release, can shoot in motion, rebound control, variety of shots. BOTH forehand and backhand Uses wrist shot, snap shot, slap shot Shot selection picks best shot for the opportunity Can score goals Uses checking concepts of angling, good body position with balance & control, defensive side positioning. Shows: Aggressive forechecks & backchecks on puck Gap control and steering puck carriers to outside Strength and quickness to win puck battles Active use of stick to break up plays by opponents Ability to deliver & take clean body checks (for Bantam & older age categories only) Competitive Effort & Attitude Willing to engage/ work hard through adversity Pushes through checks/ traffic to make plays Determined to win 1 on 1 puck battles Able to focus on task at hand Controls emotions & temper Ability to see offensive and defensive plays develop Reads and reacts; moves quickly to provide support Sense of timing on transitions Creates opportunities for self & teammates Takes away/ shuts down threats Communicates with teammates Shows good judgment: Offensively - finds open ice to receive pass; goes to net without puck; headmans the puck on the attack; finds and passes to open teammates; uses drop passes & point men appropriately; timing to avoid offsides Defensively - zone coverage in own end; plays d-side of puck; closes passing lanes; d-man takes away pass on 2 on 1 s; adjusts to middle of ice when partner pinches as of Feb 18, 2014 Page 6 of 13

8 Southland Hockey Association - GOALIE Scrimmage Evaluation Criteria General Positioning Movement Shot Prep/ Save Execution Competitiveness Assumes neutral ready position at top of crease: knees bent, balanced on skates, glove open, stick on ice, eyes on puck Reads play as it develops (head position and adjusts angle to play) Lines up properly on puck; ability to orient self quickly Recovery regains appropriate position after scrambling/ leaving net Knows his/her position relative to posts at all times Positions on posts for play coming from behind net or in corners Skating ability - Uses back side edge and hard C cuts Reacts well to: puck movement in zone / quick untelegraphed shots / potential deflectors / change of direction Moves with speed and control in ready position; stays on feet Balance retains ready position when moving / after blocking shot Agility in up, down movements, especially with butterfly style Agility with lateral movements from post to post Ability to recover from stomach, back, knees or side Moves backwards and laterally with speed to mirror puck movement on breakaways Challenges shooter, movement towards puck to cut down angle Quickly sets to puck for shot release Tracks puck into glove, blocker, body or leg pads Quickness of glove, blocker, leg pads Stops initial shot and directs rebounds away with control Covers rebounds when appropriate Ability to: butterfly at appropriate time; block quick shots in scramble situations; maintain balance on low shots Use of stick to sweep or poke check / decrease scoring opportunities / cut off crosscrease or slot passes STOPS THE PUCK from entering the net Watches play continuously; alert to potential threats Controls temper; maintains concentration despite bad plays/ early goals Does not over react to goals scored or play of others; focuses on next shot Communicates effectively with team mates Knowledge of shooter s options Ability to locate/track potential shooters when puck is behind net or in corners Works hard to find puck in traffic; never gives up / battles for puck Effectiveness in close Ability to use passing /clearing skills to help with breakout; create offensive opportunities as of Feb 18, 2014 Page 8 of 13
