Committee of the Whole Meeting Agenda Meeting Date: 01/20/2014 Outstanding Achievement Presentation -Steve Arsenault, Team Canada Sledge Hockey - Wolanski Department: Community & Protective Services Information Recommendation That Steve Arsenault be presented with a certificate of recognition for his achievement as a participant on Team Canada Sledge Hockey and their gold medal win against the US Team at the World Sledge Hockey Challenge held in Toronto in December Purpose The Outstanding Achievement Recognition Policy was developed to bring municipal recognition to Spruce Grove individuals, teams, groups and organizations who have accomplished outstanding achievements in the fields of athletics, fine arts, academics and cultural activities at a provincial, national, or international level. Background Sledge hockey is the Paralympic version of ice hockey a fast-paced, highly physical game played by athletes with a physical disability in the lower part of the body. It is an extremely exciting game for players and is currently played in 20 countries. At this time, Canada, Norway, USA and Sweden have dominated international competitions, although other teams are showing growth in the sport. Sledge hockey is one of the biggest attractions for spectators at Paralympic Winter Games. Attached is information from the Canadian Paralympic Committee on the sport of sledge hockey. Steve Arsenault, whose hometown is Spruce Grove, is a defenseman for the Team Canada Sledge Hockey team. The team won the Gold medal at the 2013 World Sledge Hockey Challenge held in Toronto, Ontario, December 1 7, 2013, upending the United States in the title game. This is the fifth time that the team has won gold at the tournament; it also took home the top prize in November 2011 in Calgary, April 2011 in London, Ont., 2008 in Charlottetown and 2007 in Kelowna, BC, in addition to claiming the silver medal in 2009 in Charlottetown and last year in Calgary. 2

3 The team had a successful playoff round during the tournament including finishing first in the preliminary round with a perfect 3-0 record, including wins over Korea (5-2), Russia (5-3) and the U.S. (4-1). The Americans came second at 2-1, followed by Russia (1-2) and Korea (0-3). In the final round, Russia earned the bronze medal finishing 4-2 over Korea. Both of these teams made their World Sledge Hockey Challenge debut this year. The final game was an exciting one with Canada taking a 3-0 lead in the first period and hanging on to the lead and defeating the US team 3-1. This is the last major international event for the team before the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games, which will be held March 7 16 in Sochi, Russia. Council and administration are very pleased to extend congratulations to Steve Arsenault as a member of Team Canada, and wish him and the team all the very best as they prepare and compete in the upcoming games in Sochi, Russia.
