A Look Back: Johns Hopkins slipped from the ranks of the unbeaten with a loss to Syracuse at Homewood Field last Saturday. Virginia dropped its second straight as the Cavaliers fell at Notre Dame, 18-9 on Sunday. Series History: Johns Hopkins and Virginia are meeting for the 87th time in a series that dates to a 9-0 Johns Hopkins victory in The Blue Jays have currently won three straight against the Cavaliers, including an win in 2012 in JHU s last trip to Charlottesville. These are the Facts: Johns Hopkins enters this week s game against Virginia with an all-time record of (.752). The Blue Jays own nine NCAA titles, 29 USILA titles and six ILA titles for a total of 44 national championships. Playing for the Cup: The winner of this week s game between Johns Hopkins and Virginia will be presented with the Doyle Smith Cup, which goes to the winner of the annual regular season game between the two teams. Doyle Smith arrived at Johns Hopkins from Corvallis, Oregon in 1962 and served as the manager of the lacrosse team throughout his tenure at Homewood. He graduated from Johns Hopkins Phi Beta Kappa and worked under the guidance of Hall of Fame coach Bob Scott before moving to the University of Virginia, where he served as the Director of Media Relations for the men s lacrosse program for 30 years Johns Hopkins Schedule/Results With a Victory The Blue Jays would give head coach Dave Pietramala his 153rd victory at JHU. That would leave him just five shy of Bob Scott s record for most wins by a Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse coach.... Johns Hopkins would win its fourth straight game against Virginia. 2 Scouting the Cavaliers Virginia Quickly: 10th-ranked Virginia welcomes ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins to Klockner Stadium for a key game with the Blue Jays. The Cavaliers are currently 6-2 on the year, but have dropped a pair of games on the road in the last two weeks. Dangerous Attack Awaits: While Johns Hopkins leans heavily on its starting attack, the Cavaliers have as well and the unit has not disappointed through eight games. Mark Cockerton paces the unit with 28 goals and 10 assists, while James Pannell counts 24 goals and four assists to his credit. Rounding out the unit is Owen Van Arsdale, who leads the team with 20 assists and has seven goals for 27 points. The trio accounts for 55.7% UVA s goals, 53.1% of the team s assists and 54.7% of its points. While limiting the attack has been a focus of all eight Virginia opponents, it certainly doesn t ensure success. A talented midfield that counts Ryan Tucker (15g, 3a), Greg Coholan (6g, 8a) and Rob Emery (9g, 4a) is talented, experienced and more than capable as the group collectively is shooting 37% on the year. Good off the Ground: A staple of Dom Starsia-coached teams has been the ability to cause turnovers and come up with loose balls and this season is no different. The Cavaliers have out-ground balled their opponents and have caused 73 turnovers in eight games. Six different players have 20 or more GBs thus far and Joseph Lisicky counts a teamhigh 13 caused turnovers to his credit. Specialty Units Key in UVA Games: The Cavaliers have converted on 12-of-25 (.480) extra-man chances with James Pannell already counting five EMO goals to his credit. UVA s opponents have also been effective with 13 EMO goals on 29 attempts (.448). He served as the information director for the USILA for many years and was the official statistician at the NCAA Men s Lacrosse Championships for over two decades. He also was responsible for the standardization and accuracy of men s lacrosse statistics and became the face and voice of the USILA during his time at Virginia. In 2000, he became the first non-player, non-coach to be inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame. By a joint acclimation between Johns Hopkins University and the University of Virginia, it was established during the 2006 season that the regular-season game contested between the Blue Jays and the Cavaliers be known as the game for the Doyle Smith Cup. Closing on Mr. Scott: Dave Pietramala picked up his 152nd victory as the head coach at Johns Hopkins with the recent 15-8 victory at UMBC and he continues to close in on the record for most career coaching victories at Homewood. Only Bob Scott, who won 158 games as the head coach at JHU from , has won or coached (214) more games than Pietramala at Johns Hopkins. Career Win Number 175: In addition to notching his 152nd victory as the head coach at Johns Hopkins with the win against UMBC, Dave Pietramala also reached a milestone as the win against the Retrievers was the 175th of his coaching career. In addition to his (.749) mark as the head coach at JHU, Pietramala also postd a record in three seasons as the head coach at Cornell and now boasts an overall record of (.720). Pietramala s 175 wins rank 10th among active Division I coaches. New Blue: The Johns Hopkins lineup features six new starters after a large senior class departed Homewood last spring. The six are spread throughout the lineup and include Eric Schneider (G), Rob Enright (D), John Kelly (D), Bronson Kelly (M), Connor Reed (M) and Ryan Brown (A). Brown did start four games at midfield last season, but made the move to his natural attack position this season, and Enright had five career starts through his first two seasons. New Blue II: In addition to the six new starters in the lineup, the overall Blue Jay roster is also vastly different than a year ago. Gone are 11 seniors who exhausted their eligibility and in their place are 17 freshmen. Youth Will be Served: Johns Hopkins is fielding one of the youngest rosters in the nation this season as 17 of the team s 49 players are freshmen and 29 are either freshmen or sophomores. Only nine of the 49 are seniors and two of those nine - Eric Schneider and Phil Castronova - have an extra year of eligibility and are planning to return for the 2015 season. For Starters: Entering the 2014 season, the entire 49-man Johns Hopkins roster counted a total of 132 combined career starts to its credit. Of those 132, Rob Guida (38), Jack Reilly (30), Brandon Benn (29) and Wells Stanwick (17) accounted 114, or 86.7%. No other returning player had started more than five games for the Blue Jays. By contrast, last year s 11-man senior class graduated with a combined 321 starts with six of those 11 players earning 45 or more starts during their careers. An Offensive Group: Johns Hopkins enters this week s game against Virginia averaging goals per game and the Blue Jays have scored at least 10 goals in every game this season. JHU ranks ninth in the nation in scoring offense, third in assists per game (8.17) and fifth in points per game (21.33). Class Rank: The Blue Jays have gotten production from each of their four classes through six games. Each class has registered at least 11 points thus far, with the sophomore (52 points), junior (34 points) and senior (31 points) classes leading the way. All Johns Hopkins home games air on the ESPN family of networks with a majority of the games airing on ESPNU. The contract renewal extends the agreement through the 2017 season. Points Attack Midfield Def/LSM/SSDM/G Must be the Speech: There must be something about the speech that head coach Dave Pietramala gives before the Blue Jays take the field at the start of the game and at halftime. For the year, Johns Hopkins holds a scoring advantage in the first quarter and a scoring margin in the third quarter. In the second and fourth quarters, JHU is a combined +7 in scoring margin (31-24). Schneider, Defense Growing: While the offense has grabbed a majority of the headlines this season, the Blue Jay defense has been consistent thus far as well. Johns Hopkins is currently ranked 13th in the nation in scoring defense (8.5) and has held five of its six opponents to nine goals or less. Eric Schneider continues to impress in goal as he sports an 8.10 goals against average and a.581 save percentage. Attack Driven: Johns Hopkins starting attack unit of senior Brandon Benn, junior Wells Stanwick and sophomore Ryan Brown will be counted on to lead the way offensively for the Blue Jays this season and the trio has been up to the task thus far. They have combined for at least four goals and nine points in all six games this season, with 11 goals against UMBC and nine goals against both Towson and Princeton. The trio has a pair of 16-point games to its credit (Towosn, UMBC) and a 14-point effort as well (Princeton). He ranks third in the nation in faceoff winning percentage and first in ground balls per game (10.67) after winning 21-of-25 faceoffs with 15 ground balls in last week s game against Syracuse. The 21 faceoff wins and 15 ground balls are both career highs. Kennedy won 18-of-22 (.818) faceoffs in the season opener against Ohio State and came back and won 16- of-23 with 10 ground balls against Towson. After winning just 1-of-6 in the first quarter, he was 15-of-17 over the final three quarters against the Tigers. Below is a breakdown of Kennedy s faceoffs and ground balls by game: USA-USA-USA Five former Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse players are among the 30 candidates still in contention for a spot on the 2014 United States National Team that will compete in the FIL World Championships in Denver this summer. The five include Kyle Harrison (DM) 05, Jesse Schwartzman (G) 07, Paul Rabil (M) 08, Michael Evans (D) 09 and Tucker Durkin (D) 13. In addition to the five players above, current Johns Hopkins head coach Dave Pietramala is serving as the defensive coordinator of the team, while Blue Jay athletic trainer Brad Mountcastle and strength coach Jay Dyer are serving in the same capacity with Team USA. Team USA will reconvene next for training camp in Connecticut (location TBA) June concluding with a matchup against a squad of MLL All- Stars in the MLL All-Star Game on June 26 at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass. From there, the team heads to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., for a second training camp July 6-9 before beginning its world title defense in Denver on July 10. Ultimately, 23 of the 30 players will be selected to the active roster for the duration of the World Championship. Faceoffs Ground Balls Ohio State 18-of Towson 16-of Michigan 6-of-14 4 Princeton 14-of UMBC 18-of Syracuse 21-of Second-Longest Game in School History: The triple overtime game against Ohio State in the season-opener ranks as the second-longest game in the history of the Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse program. The longest game in school history was a four-overtime game against Virginia on March 24, In Overtime: Johns Hopkins improved to all-time in overtime under head coach Dave Pietramala with the 10-9 triple overtime victory against Ohio State. The Blue Jays have now won four of their last five overtime games dating back to late in the 2011 season. State Rivalries: Johns Hopkins improved its record to 63-8 (.887) under head coach Dave Pietramala in games played against teams from the state of Maryland with the recent 15-8 victory against UMBC. 23 2014 Johns Hopkins Men s Lacrosse Notes Game-by-Game Recaps Game 1 #14 Ohio State-9 February 9, 2014 #11 Johns Hopkins-10 Homewood Field BALTIMORE, MD Senior Brandon Benn s second goal of the game 59 seconds into the third overtime lifted the 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse team to a 10-9 victory against 14th-ranked Ohio State before 1,338 fans at Homewood Field Sunday afternoon. Benn s goal capped a game that saw the Blue Jays trail early, lead by three in the second half and kill off an Ohio State extra-man opportunity in the second overtime. The triple-overtime game is the second-longest in Johns Hopkins history as only a four-overtime affair with Virginia in 2001 was longer. After splitting the opening faceoffs of the first and second overtime, junior Drew Kennedy won the draw to open the third extra session and the Blue Jays quickly called timeout. From there, the Blue Jays worked the ball to sophomore Holden Cattoni at the top of the box, where he found Benn 10 yards from the goal to the right of Buckeye goalie Greg Dutton. Benn fake dodged top side from the wing and stepped in and to the side of his defender before ripping home the game-winner, which secured JHU s 12th win in 14 season openers under head coach Dave Pietramala. The Blue Jays had taken control of the game in the third quarter by outscoring the Buckeyes 6-3 after the teams battled to a 2-2 halftime score. After scoring twice in the opening 30 minutes, it took the Blue Jays just two minutes of the third quarter to match that as senior Rob Guida and freshman John Crawley scored off assists from junior Wells Stanwick. Ohio State s Jesse King and Reegan Comeault wrapped goals around a Cattoni strike in a span of just over two minutes midway through the period to make it 5-4 before the Blue Jays scored three of the last four goals of the third quarter to grab an 8-5 lead entering the final period. Michael Pellegrino, Benn and Stanwick all scored in the final 6:02 of the third quarter for the Blue Jays, while Turner Evans added his only goal of the game for Ohio State during that same time frame. The Blue Jays three-goal lead held for more than six minutes in the fourth quarter before King completed his hat trick at the 11:31 mark off a nice feed inside from Comeault. An unassisted goal by Johns Hopkins sophomore Ryan Brown with just under eight minutes left pushed JHU s lead to 9-6, which set stage for OSU s late-game rally. Despite scoring seven goals in a span of just over 22 minutes to open the second half, the Blue Jays couldn t quite put the Buckeyes away and Ohio State made the run that forced overtime. King needed just over two minutes to score his fourth and fifth goals of the game and sophomore Gordie Koerber made a nice cut through the slot and Charlie Schnider found him for the equalizer with 3:07 left in the fourth quarter. It would be more than 12 minutes of playing time before Benn s game-winner, but it wasn t for lack of chances for both teams down the stretch. Brown had a goal taken away for a crease violation with 75 seconds left in regulation and Ohio State fired seven shots in the first two overtime periods, including two that were saved by Johns Hopkins goalie Eric Schneider. Still, it came down to one possession and Kennedy, who won a career-high 18 of 22 faceoffs for the Blue Jays on the day, took the one to open the third overtime and Benn capitalized 59 seconds later to end the marathon. Stanwick paced the Blue Jays with one goal and a career-high-tying five assists, while Benn and Brown both scored to two goals and added an assist to give JHU s starting attack trio a combined five goals and seven assists. In addition his work on faceoffs, Kennedy had a career-high 13 ground balls and Schneider had a careerbest 13 saves for Johns Hopkins. King, an Honorable Mention All-American last season, matched Stanwick s six points with his five-goal, one-assist effort. Comeault and Carter Brown both added one goal and one assist and Dutton posted 11 saves in goal for the Buckeyes, who matched the Blue Jays on ground balls (30-30) and were a perfect 21-for-21 on clears. Game 2 Towson-8 February 15, 2014 #11 Johns Hopkins-15 Homewood Field BALTIMORE, MD The 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse team got four goals from senior Brandon Benn, sophomore Ryan Brown and freshman John Crawley and one goal and five assists from junior Wells Stanwick as the Blue Jays powered past visiting Towson, 15-8, at blustery Homewood Field Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays move to 2-0 on the year with the win, while the Tigers slips to 1-1. The Tigers led 5-3 after Greg Cuccinello scored three straight goals for Towson to cap a 4-0 run that bridged the first and second quarters and took jut over seven minutes. Brown answered with the first of his four goals just 45 seconds after Cuccinello completed his first-half hat trick and that ignited a 10-1 Blue Jay run that extended through the end of the third quarter. Stanwick and Brown added unassisted goals 76 seconds apart shortly after Brown s initial goal to give the Blue Jays a 6-5 lead at the half, but Towson s Max Siskind drew the Tigers even just over a minute into the third quarter when he took a pass from Ryan Drenner and dipped inside his defender just above the goal line and scored from in tight. From there, it was all Johns Hopkins. Brown completed his hat trick just over a minute after Siskind scored and Crawley dodged from behind the goal on consecutive possessions and scored both times to give the Blue Jays their first three-goal lead at 9-6. Six days ago the Blue Jays scored six times in the third quarter of a 10-9 triple overtime win against Ohio State. This week, Brown s strike and Crawley s pair jump-started a seven-goal third quarter for the Blue Jays, who got another goal from Brown and one each from Holden Cattoni, Benn and freshman Kieran Eissler before the end of the period to push the lead to 13-6 entering the fourth quarter. Stanwick assisted on Brown s first goal of the quarter and the goals by Benn and Eissler. Eissler s goal was the first of his career. Mike Lowe and Cuccinello sandwiched goals around two more Benn strikes in the fourth quarter as the Blue Jays put the finishing touches on their 19th consecutive victory over the Tigers. A seven-goal Johns Hopkins victory was the last thing anyone at Homewood Field thought they d see early on as Towson dug out of an early 2-0 hole (courtesy of Crawley s first two goals in the opening seven minutes) with a 5-1 run that bridged the first and second quarters and covered exactly 12 minutes. Freshman Joe Seider ripped one home from 12 yards to slice the 2-0 deficit in half, only to have Benn answer with an extra-man goal late in the first quarter. Junior Justin Mabus again made it a one goal game when he split a pair of defenders and beat Blue Jay goalie Eric Schneider from six yards out to make it 3-2 Johns Hopkins at the end of the first quarter. The one-goal Blue Jay lead was a two-goal deficit 6:01 into the second quarter as Cuccinello scored twice in a 41-second span early in the quarter and then picked the far post at the 8:59 mark to give the Tigers the 5-3 lead. Game 3 Michigan-5 February 22, 2014 #8 Johns Hopkins-14 Homewood Field BALTIMORE, MD The eighth-ranked Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse team jumped out to a 9-1 halftime lead and had 11 different players score as the Blue Jays eased past visiting Michigan, 14-5, at Homewood Field Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays improve to 3-0 on the year, while the Wolverines slip to 2-2. The win was the 150th for Dave Pietramala as the head coach at Johns Hopkins and it came in his 200th game as the head coach at Homewood. He is now as the head coach at Johns Hopkins and overall. Hopkins sprinted out to a 6-0 lead after the opening 15 minutes as five different players found the back of the net. Junior Michael Pellegrino s transition goal opened the scoring less than two minutes into the game and JHU added five more goals on 13 first-quarter shots to push out to the early six-goal lead. Junior Wells Stanwick assisted on Pellegrino s goal, added a strike of his own four minutes later and got the helper on Brandon Benn s second goal of the quarter in the final minute to fuel the early run, which also included unassisted goals from midfielders Bronson Kelly and John Crawley. Doug Bryant broke a game-opening Wolverine scoring drought that reached more than 21 minutes when he fired home an unassisted goal at the 9:21 mark of the second quarter, but a three-goal Blue Jay run that took less than two minutes midway through the period effectively put the game away. A pair of Holden Cattoni goals, including one while the Blue Jays were on the extra-man, and a strike from senior midfielder Rob Guida accounted for JHU s second-quarter scoring and gave JHU the eight-goal halftime lead. Michigan eventually outshot the Blue Jays 41-36, but the Blue Jay defense did a great job of pushing the Wolverines to their off-hand and tough angles. Senior goalie Eric Schneider posted eight of his career-high 19 saves in the first half as the Blue Jays built their lead. Schneider s 19 saves are the most by a Johns Hopkins player since Pierce Bassett had 20 in a win against then eighth-ranked Loyola on May 8, The Blue Jays nearly matched their three-goal second-quarter run with a threegoal flurry in the third quarter that took just under three minutes and included Guida s second and goals by sophomore Ryan Brown and freshman Cody Radziewicz. Guida s goal with just over 10 minutes remaining gave the Blue Jays a 12-1 lead. Michigan won the statistical battle over the final 20 minutes of the game and outscored the Blue Jays 4-2 over that span to account for the 14-5 final score. David McCormack, David Joseph and Kyle Jackson scored unassisted goals during that time for the Wolverines and Peter Kraus assisted on a Riley Kennedy goal for the Wolverines, who fired off 27 of their 41 shots in the second half. Game 4 #5 Johns Hopkins-15 March 1, 2014 #10 Princeton-9 Class of 1952 Stadium PRINCETON, NJ The visiting Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse team used an 8-1 run that bridged the second and third quarters to turn a 4-4 tie into a 12-5 advantage and the fifth-ranked Blue Jays never let 10th-ranked Princeton get closer than four in the final 20 minutes of the game in a 15-9 victory at Class of 1952 Stadium Saturday afternoon. The win, Johns Hopkins fourth straight at Princeton, improves the Blue Jays record to 4-0 on the year, while the Tigers slip to 2-1 with the loss. A spirited first quarter that included 19 shots, eight goals and four Princeton extra-man chances ended the same way it began; tied (4-4). From there, the Blue Jays took control with the 8-1 run that included goals from five different players and gave them what proved to be the insurmountable seven-goal lead. It took less than three minutes of the second quarter for the Blue Jays to turn the 4-4 tie into a 6-4 lead as sophomore Holden Cattoni and junior Wells Stanwick netted unassisted goals to give the Blue Jays the two-goal lead. A Mike MacDonald goal three minutes after Stanwick s goal trimmed the deficit to 6-5, but a three-goal Hopkins run over the final 7:47 of the half gave the Blue Jays a 9-5 lead at intermission. Stanwick completed his first-half hat trick to jump-start the three-goal spree as Ryan Brown found him on the backside after a quick restart and Rob Guida got his hands free just over a minute later to make it 8-5. When Connor Reed dodged from the top of the box and scored with four seconds left in the first half the Blue Jays had their 9-5 lead. Any hopes for a quick Princeton spurt to close the deficit in the third quarter were gone less than three minutes into the second half as Guida and Brown both scored early to push the lead to 11-5 and Brandon Benn extended his goal-scoring streak to 20 games four minutes after Brown s goal to make it Princeton finally made its inevitable run late in the third quarter when senior midfielder Tom Schreiber sandwiched goals around a Ryan Ambler strike to make it 12-8 at the end of period. The Tigers got their three goals in a span of just under four minutes. As they had in each of the first three quarters, the Blue Jays scored in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter and actually got a pair less than a minute apart as Brown s fourth of the game and an unassisted goal by freshman Cody Radziewicz extended the lead to 14-8 with just under 13 minutes on the clock. A Justin Murphy goal seven seconds after the Radziewicz strike and Brown s career-high fifth of the game closed out the scoring before seven minutes elapsed in the final period.

The Blue Jays led big early, watched as the Retrievers got back into it with a strong second quarter and then pulled away to improve to 5-0 on the year. UMBC slips to 2-2 and had a two-game winning streak snapped. The win is the 175th in the coaching career of Johns Hopkins head coach Dave Pietramala, who is now at Johns Hopkins and overall. Nursing a 9-8 lead entering the fourth quarter, the Blue Jays needed just six minutes to extend the lead to four as Rob Guida, Brandon Benn and Wells Stanwick all scored in a span of just 2:26 to make it Guida blew home a 14-yarder off an assist from Connor Reed before Benn took a nifty feed from Stanwick on the doorstep and scored from in close. When the Retrievers went offsides less than a minute later, Benn found Stanwick behind the defense on a quick restart and Stanwick beat a defenseless Connor Gordon to polish off the three-goal flurry. The 12-8 lead held for nearly four minutes before another three-goal run for Johns Hopkins put the game away. Sophomore Holdden Cattoni dodged from behind the goal to ignite the spree, which also included goals from Stanwick and Benn and required just 39 seconds to complete. Cattoni got the assist on Benn s goal, which came on the extra-man and closed the scoring with 5:01 to play. A fourth-quarter surge didn t look like it would be needed early on as the Blue Jays scored three goals before the game was six minutes old as sophomore Ryan Brown wrapped goals around a Benn strike before UMBC got one back on a goal from Ty Kashur midway through the quarter. The 3-1 lead held for more than three minutes before Reed ignited a 4-0 Hopkins run that took less than three minutes and extended the lead to 7-1. Stanwick, Benn and Brown all added goals during the spree and Cattoni assisted on two of those to give the Blue Jays the six-goal lead. The Retrievers got back in the game on the strength of Pat Young s shooting and Gordon s play in the goal. Young scored three straight UMBC goals between the end of the first quarter and the middle of the second to make it 7-4 before Matt Gregoire and Young added tallies in the final 3:32 of the period to make it 7-6 at the half. While Young s first-half heroics were the headline, Gordon s play at the other end was just as spectacular. He made seven second-quarter saves as the Blue Jays went cold after Brown s goal with 44 seconds left in the first quarter. After going scoreless in the second quarter, the Blue Jays needed just nine seconds to open the scoring in the third quarter as Benn was on the backend of a fastbreak off the faceoff that junior Drew Kennedy jump-started with a clean win. The lead was 9-6 just 72 seconds later when Guida fired one home off an assist from Cattoni, but back-to-back goals from UMBC s Jack Gannon made it 9-8 at the end of the third quarter. Gannon s goals came nearly nine minutes apart, but Gordon posted two saves after Guida s goal to keep the Blue Jays off the board for the rest of the third quarter. Senior goalie Eric Schneider made two big saves in the final minutes of the third quarter for the Blue Jays, who held the 9-8 lead until Guida s goal just over three minutes into the fourth quarter ignited the game-ending six-goal run for Johns Hopkins. The run was fueled by Kennedy, who won 5-of-6 faceoffs in the fourth quarter and finished 18-of-26 with 12 ground balls on the day. Benn matched his career high with five goals and added an assist for a personalbest six points, while Stanwick (3g, 3a) and Brown (3g, 1a) rounded out an effort that saw JHU s starting attack combine for 11 goals and five assists.
