Ryan Carroll (Hackensack, N.J.) made 34 saves to help Harvard hold the nation s highest scoring offense to one goal for the first time this season, but the Crimson could not quite hand the Bulldogs their first home loss in front of 3,500 fans. With 16 points, he shares the team lead with linemate Michael Biega (Montreal, Que.). Biega paces Harvard with 10 assists. Top of the [Blue] Line Danny Biega (Montreal, Que.) has 15 points (6 9 15) to lead Harvard defensemen. He is tied for the league lead among defensemen and tied for 13th among all skaters with six goals in ECAC Hockey play. He has totaled 14 points (6-8-14) in league games to tie Princeton s Taylor Fedun for second in ECAC defenseman scoring, a point behind Rensselaer s Nick Bailen ( ). Biega is tied for 13th in league scoring among all players. With six goals and nine assists overall, Biega averages 0.71 points per game, tying him for 17th nationally among defensemen. Getting Defensive Harvard has held each of its last four opponents to two goals or fewer. The Crimson limited No. 3 Yale to its lowest scoring output of the season Friday and held No. 12 Union, which ranks seventh nationally in scoring offense, without a goal for more than 46 minutes Jan. 22. Carroll on a Roll Ryan Carroll has started four straight games in goal for the Crimson, beginning with a 40-save effort at Union. In that span, he owns a 1.78 goalsagainst average and.944 save percentage. The Killers The Crimson killed all four of Yale s power plays Friday and has now fended off 24 of the last 25 power plays it has faced. The only power-play tally Harvard has allowed in the last six games was Locke Jillson s second-period game-winner for Cornell (Jan. 29). The Crimson was a season-best 6 for 6 on the penalty kill at Northeastern (Jan. 19) and 5 for 5 at Union. The Dutchmen own the nation s top power play. Busy Crimson Monday s game caps stretches of four games in 11 days and seven games in 20 days for Harvard. Only two of those seven games were at home. Close Calls Harvard has lost eight games by a single goal and another game by two goals with one coming on an empty net. In 2011, five of the Crimson s seven league games have been one-goal losses. Hall of Famer Bob McManama 73 will be Harvard s 10th inductee to the Beanpot Hall of Fame when he is honored between semifinal games Monday. McManama totaled eight points on three goals and five assists in six Beanpot games, including two final appearances. Vote for Alex Alex Killorn is one of 68 nominees in the preliminary fan-voting phase of the Hobey Baker Award selection at running through March 6. The fans vote accounts for one percent of the total ballot in each phase. All in the Family Michael Biega has notched five goals and six assists in the last 11 games, and brother Danny has five goals and five assists in the last 10 games. A Biega brother has scored or assisted on 14 of the last 18 Harvard goals. Heating Up Boston Bruins prospect Alex Fallstrom (Stockholm, Sweden), who missed 10 games with an injury suffered at Clarkson (Nov. 13), has returned to the lineup and returned to form. With his second tournament on the Bruins home ice on the horizon, Fallstrom scored his first two goals of the season in consecutive games Jan against Colgate and Cornell. Crimson, Black and Gold There is a strong Harvard presence at TD Garden, in the front office of the Boston Bruins. Former Crimson captain Peter Chiarelli 87 is the Bruins general manager, and former All-American Don Sweeney 88 is the team s assistant general manager. Sweeney played alongside Chiarelli at Harvard and was a teammate of Ted Donato with both the Crimson and the Bruins. Another of Donato s Harvard teammates, John Weisbrod 91, is Boston s director of collegiate scouting. 3

Yale Dartmouth Princeton Brown Cornell Harvard Scouting the Huskies Northeastern s 4-3, overtime loss to Merrimack Friday was its first defeat in six games. The Huskies are since winning just one of their first 10 games. They have the nation s 10th-ranked scoring defense, allowing 2.28 goals per game despite owning Division I s fifth-highest penaltyminute average at 18.2 per game. Wade MacLeod leads the Huskies in goals (13), assists (13) and points (26), while fellow senior Tyler McNeely ( ) is not far behind. Chris Rawlings ranks sixth nationally with a.930 save percentage. In 23 starts, he owns a 2.22 goals against average and four shutouts, including three in the last six games. Jan. 15 at Matthews Arena Northeastern scored once in each period and got 34 saves from Chris Rawlings to shut out the Crimson, 3-0. The Huskies withstood a strong start by Harvard and claimed the lead for good in the final minute of the first period. Raphael Girard (Saint-Hyacinthe, Que.) made 34 saves in his first collegiate start. It was the Crimson s first game since 1997 at the 100-year-old Matthews, formerly known as Boston Arena and once a home rink for Harvard. Familiar Foe Harvard and Northeastern have faced off in 11 of the last 12 Beanpots. Series History The Crimson holds the all-time series lead against Northeastern at and is against the Huskies in the Beanpot. The teams first met Dec. 4, 1940, a 7-4 NU win. Harvard won seven of the next nine meetings and later posted series win streaks of 10 games ( ) and 16 games ( ). The teams met for one ECAC title while Northeastern was a member of the conference, with the Huskies prevailing, 5-2, in the 1982 league title game. Conference Call Harvard s Beanpot games are the last non-league games of the regular season for any ECAC team. The conference has posted a combined record against WCHA (8-8-4), CCHA (6-10-2) and Hockey East (8-9-4) teams. ECAC squads were against teams from Atlantic Hockey for an overall record of from outside the conference (records courtesy USCHO.com). Help from the Blue Line Defensemen have assisted on or scored 20 of Harvard s last 25 goals, totaling six goals and 18 assists in the last eight games. Outside the Box The Crimson averages just 12.4 penalty minutes per game, tying Harvard for the 15th-lowest mark in the nation. Kyle Richter (Calgary, Alta.) made 37 saves for Harvard while John Muse stopped 33 shots for the Eagles, handing Harvard its first shutout loss of the year. Carl Sneep registered a goal and two assists to lead BC to the championship game against Boston University. Tyler McNeely scored twice to lead Northeastern to a 4-1 win against the Crimson in the consolation game. Ryan Carroll made 30 saves for Harvard while allowing three goals, and Conor Morrison (London, Ont.) scored his ninth goal of the season. The rookie s defelection of a Ryan Grimshaw (Rochester, N.Y.) shot cut in half a second-period NU lead. BC held off BU, 4-3, in the title game to win its 15th Beanpot. Call from the Hall This is the second straight year someone from Harvard has been chosen for the Beanpot Hall of Fame. Fran Toland, who served as associate athletic director at Harvard for 41 years, was inducted last year. Beanplotting Harvard has won 10 Beanpot titles, most recently in Other Crimson Beanpot notes: Head coach Ted Donato enters this season s tournament with a 2-10 Beanpot record as Harvard head coach, and his teams have a record against Boston teams in non-beanpot action. The Crimson fell to BU, 5-2, and Northeastern, 3-0, last month. Pier-Olivier Michaud (Mont-Joli, Que.) leads Harvard with three career goals and four career points in Beanpot play. Matt McCollem (Westford, Mass.) has registered a goal and two assists with a +3 rating in Beanpot games. The Crimson has lost to the eventual national champion in each of the last three Beanpots, falling to BC in 2008 and 2010 and BU in Since the first Beanpot in 1952, Boston schools have won nine national championships. Each time, the title-winning team won the Beanpot earlier in the season. The rivalries with BU, BC and Northeastern are Harvard s most-contested among non-conference opponents. Many of those games took place when all the schools were part of the 17-team ECAC. Harvard has met Boston University 142 times, Boston College 118 and Northeastern 96. Harvard has faced BC in each of the last four Beanpots. In 2008, Harvard made its first appearance since 1998 in the Beanpot championship game, losing a thriller to BC, 6-5, in overtime. The Crimson trailed, 5-3, until Jon Pelle 08 and Mike Taylor 08 scored in the final nine minutes of the third period to send the game to an extra session. Taylor had two goals and an assist in the game. Doug Rogers 10 recorded a goal and two assists, one to Matt McCollem. Alex Biega 10 had two assists Kyle Richter made 27 saves. Nick Petrecki scored the winning goal for the Eagles at 7:07 of overtime. Petrecki had two goals, as did Brian Gibbons. Four current Harvard players skated in the 2008 Beanpot final: goal-scorer Matt McCollem, starting goaltender Kyle Richter, Michael Biega and Pier-Olivier Michaud. Harvard s last semifinal meeting with Northeastern also came in The Crimson started the game with three goals in barely seven minutes and won, 3-1. Harvard held the Huskies to 19 shots, and Kyle Richter stopped 18. Prior to last season, Harvard s last three Beanpot losses had come by a single goal. The Crimson narrowly missed trips to the Beanpot championship game in four of Ted Donato s first five years behind the bench. Harvard suffered a 2-1, double-overtime loss to Northeastern in the 2005 semifinal. BU held off a late Crimson charge (Harvard scored twice and held a 25-6 advantage in shots in the final period.) and added an empty net goal for a 5-3 win in the 2006 semifinals. BC scored twice to rally and added an emptynetter in a 3-1 win against the Crimson in the 2007 first round. No. 1 BU defeated Harvard, 4-3, in 2009 but only after rallying from a 2-0 deficit, gaining the lead in the final two minutes and surviving when a would-be tying goal from Alex Biega crossed the goal line just after the final buzzer. Harvard s nine-year championship-appearance drought that ended in 2008 was the longest in school history. The current 17-year title drought is the Crimson s longest. Ted Donato made his Beanpot debut behind the Harvard bench in 2005, giving the tournament three teams with prominent alumni of their programs at the helm. Donato was 3-5 in Beanpot games as an undergrad, helping the team to a Beanpot title in Beanpot MVP Bill Cleary 56 holds Beanpot records for goals in a period (four), game (five[tie]) and tournament (seven) and for points in a period (five), game (seven) and tournament (11). He went on to coach Harvard to four Beanpot titles. Joe Cavanagh 71 holds the record for career points in the Beanpot with 19 ( ) and was a member of the inaugural induction class to the Beanpot Hall of Fame, alongside Bill Cleary, in

6 Harvard Men s Ice Hockey 6 A New Teammate The Crimson adopted Nathan Potvin as a member of the team in a Friends of Jaclyn Foundation gathering Jan. 14 at Bright Hockey Center. Nathan, a 12-year-old left wing from Hooksett, N.H., has been battling a spinal cord tumor since age 5 and travels to Boston frequently for treatment. Nathan has been attending Harvard games and meeting the team throughout the season and is now a member of the Crimson, complete with his own stall in the ocker room. Elite Company Ted Donato needs five wins to become the fourth head coach to lead Harvard to 100 victories. He is seeking to join Harvard legend Bill Cleary (324 wins), Hockey Hall of Famer Ralph Cooney Weiland (315) and Ronn Tomassoni (140) in that exclusive club. Crimson Captains Harvard is led by captains Michael Del Mauro (Watchung, N.J.) and Chris Huxley (Weymouth, Mass.) and assistant Kyle Richter. Del Mauro, a three time ECAC All Academic selection, earned the Angier Trophy as the Crimson s most improved player last season. Huxley has played 106 games, registering 30 points. Richter was the 2008 winner of the Dryden Award as ECAC Hockey s top goalie and holds Harvard records for games (34), starts (34) and minutes (2,023) in a season. Leaving His Mark Kyle Richter is tied with Bruce Durno 71 for third in Harvard history with six career shutouts. Dov Grumet-Morris 05 is the all-time Crimson record with 11 shutouts, and Grant Blair 86 ranks second with nine. Richter has made 2,281 career saves to rank fourth on Harvard s all-time list. He needs 380 more stops to equal J.R. Prestifilippo 00 for third place. Grumet-Morris holds the Crimson career saves record with 3,081 Richter ranks fifth in career games started (83), games played (87) and minutes played (4,892) at Harvard. Oh, Brother The Harvard roster features a set of Biega brothers for the fourth straight season and at least one Biega for the fifth straight year. Oldest brother Alex signed with the National Hockey League s Buffalo Sabres just before 2010 commencement and is now playing for the Sabres American Hockey League affiliate, the Portland Pirates. Hat Trick Facts With three goals against Colgate (Jan. 28), Danny Biega became the first Harvard defenseman to record a hat trick since current New York Islander Dylan Reese 07 scored three times in a 5-2 home win against Yale March 2, 2007 in the opening game of the ECAC playoffs. Biega s hat trick was Harvard s second of the year. The first was a natural hat trick by older brother Michael, who scored three straight goals in the second period against Brown (Jan. 7). Brother to Brother Michael Biega assisted on Danny Biega s first goal against Colgate. One brother has assisted the other five times in the last 10 games (Danny to Michael three times, Michael to Danny twice). They had never played together before last season, and neither had assisted the other before Jan. 7. Adding Offense Danny Biega has 20 points ( ) in the last 28 games after logging one goal and three assists in the first 25 games of his rookie season of Family Tradition A Biega brother has led Harvard in assists in each of the last two seasons, Alex with 16 in and Michael with 15 last season. Streaker Alex Killorn registered points in 10 straight games from Nov. 20 through Jan. 15. Clutch Performer Alex Killorn has scored three of Harvard s four game-winning goals, including the lone goal with 8.2 seconds left on the clock against No. 18 Rensselaer (Nov. 6). Shooting Gallery Alex Killorn leads ECAC Hockey with 73 shots on goal in league play. He has a team-high 94 total shots in 21 games this season, inclduing a seasonhigh 12 at Clarkson. On the Dot Alex Killorn has won a team-high 179 faceoffs, while losing 163 (.516). Killorn has posted a winning record in 11 games and an even mark in three. Killorn won a season-high 15 draws, with 11 losses, at Clarkson. David Valek (Zagreb, Croatia) went 6-2 on faceoffs at Yale and owns a team-high.577 win percentage (30-22). Daniel Moriarty (Bienfait, Sask.) is (.567), while Marshall Everson (Edina, Minn.) is (.560). The Century Mark Chris Huxley skated in his 100th game for Harvard Nov. 15 at Boston University. He has registered six goals and 24 assists in his career. Michael Biega skated in his 100th game Nov. 19 at Princeton. He leads the Crimson with career totals of 28 goals, 43 assists and 71 points. 7 Harvard vs. Northeastern 59th Annual Beanpot Semifinal Feb. 7, 2011 Top 50 Hobey Baker winner Lane MacDonald was named to ECAC Hockey s list of the top 50 players in league history Wednesday, joining Mark Fusco 83, Joe Cavanagh 71 and Gene Kinasewich 64 as Harvard s honorees so far. A member of the 1988 U.S. Olympic Team, MacDonald was twice selected to the All America first team selection is the Crimson s all-time leader with 111 career goals. He was the captain and most valuable player of Harvard s NCAA championship team, led the Crimson to the 1987 ECAC title and ranks second all-time at Harvard with 225 points. Happy 50th The Crimson, like its fellow league members, is wearing a patch on its jerseys this season commemorating the 50th season of ECAC play. ECAC Hockey has been home to seven NCAA champions, witnessed over 15,000 games and produced more than 500 NHL players and nearly 300 All-Americans. The league will honor its rich history with initiatives throughout the season. Harvard has won a regular-season or tournament title (or both) in 17 of the previous 49 seasons. Local Legends Harvard s prolific Local Line of Bill Corkery 73, Bob McManama and Dave Hynes 73 was inducted into the Massachusetts Hockey Hall of Fame Nov. 10. McManama, a native of Belmont, Mass., centered left wing Hynes of Cambridge and right wing Corkery of Arlington for each of their three seasons on the Crimson varsity squad. They helped Harvard capture the ECAC title and reach the NCAA semifinals as sophomores in and share the ECAC regular-season crown as seniors in The Crimson posted a record in those three years as the members of the Local Line totaled 201 goals and 407 points. At the time of their graduation, McManama and Hynes ranked second and third, respectively, on Harvard s career scoring chart and were tied for second all-time in goals at Harvard. The Crimson had not registered six goals in a game since blowing out Quinnipiac, 11-0, to open an ECAC quarterfinal series March 14, In addition to Danny Biega s career highs for points and goals against Colgate, Chris Huxley set career bests with three assists and three points, and Marshall Everson registered his first two assist game. Conor Morrison and Michael Biega matched their career highs in assists with two each. Comeback Crimson The Jan. 7 game against Brown, an eventual 4-3 loss, was the second time in three games that the Crimson came back to take the lead after trailing by two goals in the second period. Harvard rallied from two goals down to defeat Army, 4-2, Jan. 1. The Brown loss was the Crimson s first when leading at any point in a game. Harvard was previously 3-0 after taking the lead. Trick or Treat Michael Biega s hat trick against Brown was the second of his career. Biega previously scored all three goals the first three of his career in a 3-3 tie Nov. 28, 2007 at Yale. The last Crimson player to score three goals in a game was Conor Morrison, who netted four in a 6-5 home loss to BU Nov. 24, Getting Going Danny Fick (Marine on St. Croix, Minn.) entered the Jan. 1 Army game without a collegiate point and with a -2 plus/minus rating. He logged two assists and was +3 against the Black Knights. Homecoming King Rence Coassin (Hamden, Conn.) scored the first goal of his career, shorthanded, while playing in his hometown Nov. 20. The score was part of a Harvard comeback from three goals down to tie the game before the end of the second period, but host Quinnipiac pulled out a 5-4 win. Back in the Lineup Matt McCollem is back on the ice after the first healthy offseason of his collegiate career. He has battled injuries since his freshman season of , when he logged 11 points (5 7-12) and a +8 rating over the final 14 games. Returning Statistical Leaders Five of Harvard s top six scorers are back from Michael Biega ranked second on the team with 22 points while logging a team-high 15 assists a year ago. Alex Killorn ranked third on the squad with 20 points and nine goals. Conor Morrison is the top returning goal-scorer, having netted 10 goals to go with eight assists. Chris Huxley led Harvard defensemen with 13 points, one fewer than forward Daniel Moriarty. 7

8 Harvard Men s Ice Hockey 8 Stability Amid Turnover Harvard lost four defensemen to graduation but returned three who skated in at least 30 games last season: Danny Biega (32 games), Chris Huxley (32) and Ryan Grimshaw (30). What a Difference a Year Makes Harvard s opening-night lineup featured six freshmen and four sophomores among the 12 forwards. None of the Crimson s 14 forwards began with fewer than 22 games played. Dependability in Goal Seniors Kyle Richter and Ryan Carroll have combined to start 112 games in their Harvard careers. Richter owns a.913 save percentage and 2.67 goals against average in 87 career games (83 starts). Carroll has registered a.919 save percentage and 2.77 goals against average in 37 games (29 starts). Pro Prospects Danny Biega was the second returning collegiate player selected in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. He was taken with the seventh pick of the third round, the 67th overall selection, by the Carolina Hurricanes. Biega was the first Quebec native to be drafted, making it the second straight year a Harvard player has held that distinction, following the 2009 first-round selection of Louis Leblanc 13 by the Montreal Canadiens. Biega s selection gives the Crimson four NHL draftees on its roster. Alex Fallstrom was chosen in 2009 (Minnesota Wild, fourth round, 116th overall, traded to Boston Bruins), Alex Killorn in 2007 (Tampa Bay Lightning, third round, 77th overall) and Matt McCollem in 2006 (St. Louis Blues, sixth round, 154th overall). In the Show Dylan Reese made his NHL debut March 4, 2010 at Atlanta, becoming the 24th Harvard player to skate in the world s top hockey league. In the NHL Dominic Moore 03 in his first season with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Two-time Stanley Cup champion Craig Adams 99 of the Pittsburgh Penguines is in his 10th NHL season, while Dylan Reese of the New York Islanders is in his second. He had the top overall numbers in the right-hand grip (185 pounds), left-hand grip (176), push strength (329), pull strength (328), bench press (20 reps of 150 pounds) and upper-body power (tossed four kilogram medicine ball 261 inches). Ziff 88 Head Coach for Men s Ice Hockey Following success as a player at the collegiate, professional and international levels, Ted Donato has begun piling up a long list of accomplishments in six years as head coach at his alma mater. The former Crimson captain has guided Harvard to its first back-to-back 20-win seasons since and , captured ECAC Hockey and Ivy League championships, claimed two NCAA tournament berths, led his team to three league championship games, coached two All-Americans and set a new standard for wins by a Harvard coach in his first three seasons. The owner of a career record entering this season, Donato accumulated 56 victories in his first three years. He is the third Harvard coach to total 50 wins in his first three seasons, joining Bill Cleary 56 (51 wins), who coached Donato at Harvard, and Ronn Tomassoni (50). Donato, an NCAA champion as a Crimson player, Olympian and 13-year NHL veteran, was introduced as the Robert D. Ziff 88 Head Coach for Harvard Men s Ice Hockey July 2, A 1991 graduate, Donato is just the Crimson s sixth head coach since He is the eighth Harvard alum to serve as the program s head coach. The appointment is his first coaching position. Donato did not look like a rookie coach in his debut season in , leading the Crimson to a record, runner-up finishes in the ECAC Hockey League regular season and tournament and an NCAA tournament bid. His Harvard squad followed with another 21-win season, captured the ECACHL and Ivy League championships and made another NCAA appearance. Donato is the only head coach to take Harvard to the NCAA tournament in each of his first two years. Sharing a trait with his playing career, Donato s teams have shown the tendency to come through in the clutch. They have gone in February home games and in all games following the early- February Beanpot tournament. The Crimson closed the year on a run, reaching the finals of the Beanpot and league playoffs. In , Harvard capped the regular season with a spurt. As an undergraduate, Donato etched his name alongside Harvard s all-time greats. He finished his career 11th on the Crimson s career scoring chart (50 goals, 94 assists, 144 points) and remains 12th in that category. He earned All-ECAC and All-Ivy accolades while serving as the 95th captain of Harvard hockey in his senior season. Donato was named Most Outstanding Player of the 1989 NCAA Frozen Four, where Harvard downed Minnesota, 4-3, in overtime in the NCAA championship game. That contest, held in the Gophers backyard (St. Paul, Minn.), saw Donato net a pair of goals, one that tied the game at 1-1 midway through the second period and another that gave the Crimson a 3-2 lead with seven minutes to go. Donato scored three goals and added a pair of assists in the tournament. He earned the Donald Angier Hockey Trophy as the team s most improved player in 1989 and accepted the Ralph Cooney Weiland Award for spirit and devotion to Harvard hockey in 1991 A native of Dedham, Mass., Donato was a member of seven U.S. national teams, including the 1992 Olympic team. He tied for the team lead in scoring with four goals and three assists in eight games in the Olympics and posted 11 goals and 22 assists in the pre-games schedule. He also played in the World Championships in 1997 (4-2-6 in 8 GP), 1999 (2-6-8 in 8 GP) and 2002 (1-3-4 in 7 GP) and in the 1988 World Junior Championship (3-2-5 in 7 GP). Donato was selected by the Boston Bruins in the fifth round of the 1987 NHL Entry Draft (98th overall), and he signed with his hometown club in March 1992 following the Olympic Games. His 13-year pro career included stops in New York (with the Rangers and Islanders), Los Angeles, Ottawa, Anaheim and St. Louis. He returned to the Bruins as a free agent in July His NHL career spanned 796 games, in which he scored 150 goals with 197 assists for 347 points. Donato had eight goals and 18 assists in 58 career playoff games. With 25 goals in , he became the first U.S.-born player to lead the Bruins in goals. Donato graduated Catholic Memorial School as its all-time leading scorer. The son of Michael and Mary Donato, Ted and his three brothers were all active in athletics. Brother Michael played baseball at Princeton; Chris played hockey, baseball and football at Williams; and Dan played hockey and baseball at Boston University. Their sister, Paula, is a plastics engineer. Donato is a resident of Scituate, Mass., with his wife, Jeannine, and their four children: Ryan, Jack, Nolan and Madelyn.
