1 High Level Minor Hockey Association Board Meeting September 18, 2013 Present: Dave Borle, Simon Juckes, Alison Holditch, Tera Martens, Winston Delorme, Sheena McKinney, Steve Thoresen Regrets: Christine Peterson, Ryan Norton 1.0 MEETING CALLED TO ORDER Meeting called to Order at 6:10pm 2.0 AGENDA 2.1 Additions to Agenda Hockey Alberta All Peace Meeting Report Novice Parent Meeting Pond hockey Numbers/Supplementing with minor hockey Morning Shinny Security Town Meeting 2.2 Approval of Agenda Motion to accept Agenda with additions -Moved by Tera, seconded by Alison - CARRIED 3.0 MINUTES FROM PREVIOUS BOARD MEETING Motion to accept minutes of August 26 Moved by Winston, seconded by Simon - CARRIED 4.0 OLD BUSINESS 4.1 President s Report Dave Borle Practice Sweaters update Jerseys sponsored by Canadian Tire ordered a week ago Thursday. They will have the North Stars crest on the chest and Canadian Tire logo on sleeve. The cost to the association is $15.78/unit for shipping Hockey Bag Tags Dave has designed a tag for the hockey bags. When tags are completed they will be distributed. Question arose about whether it is mandatory for players to use the bag. It is up to the coaches discretion. The hope is that players will want to use them. 2 4.1.3 Program Update This is a work in progress Hockey Alberta All Peace Meeting Steve Thoresen attended the meetings allowing Dave to attend evaluation weekend. Steve updated the board. Notes attached Novice Parent Meeting Parent meeting went well. Teams will be split for skill development purposes. 4.2 Vice President s Report Simon Juckes Evaluation Camp Review Went very well Need to be better organized with the jerseys for evaluation purposes There was positive feedback from parents Parent meetings went well Agreed that this should be adopted going forward Kate Cochrane did a fantastic job of the warm-up sessions. Kate did not want to be compensated but the board felt she deserved an appreciation gift. Motion made that Tera will purchase a $ gift certificate to Canadian Tire for Kate Cochrane in appreciation for her time during the evaluation camp - Moved by Sheena seconded by Allison - CARRIED Novice Split terminology During the parent meeting there was concern about what the teams will be called to avoid the schoolyard negative talk. At this time the teams will be called Team Blue and Team White until sponsors are allocated at which time they will go by their sponsor name. There is a lack of jerseys at this level. A new set of jerseys will be order so both teams have home and away jerseys. They will not be like the current jerseys but a lighter style. Motion Christine to order yth lrg jerseys through Mondo. 20 each of blue and white as close to the current color and style of the current North Stars jerseys Moved by Tera Seconded by Winston - CARRIED Division Coaching Staff Coaching staff is in place for each division except the second team in novice. Simon is working on that. Midget parent group will be informed that they are responsible for the head coach travel expenses. They will be encouraged to look into bussing and group bookings for hotels to lower the costs Coach Stream Interest Update There has been interest in this course. Sheena will inform those interested to register, complete the online portion in preparation for the on ice portion to take place the week of October 7 th 10 th. Participants will submit their course receipts to be reimbursed.

3 4.2.5 Pond Hockey Numbers/Supplementing with minor hockey players Concern about the low numbers in pond hockey. Four registered as of this date. Suggested that if those numbers don t increase perhaps it should be opened up to the Atom division. Tera has designed a brochure to be distributed through the schools. Decision made to wait until the brochures have been distributed before opening up to Atom. Numbers will be reviewed in a couple of weeks Shinny Hockey Morning shinny will be introduced. Starting Wednesday Oct 2 nd ice will be available to novice, atom and peewee divisions, Thursdays for Bantam and Midget from 7-8am. This will run through to the week of December 17 th & 18 th. 4.3 Treasurer s Report Tera Martens Casino Fundraiser Waiting on a date for the casino. Financial report attached 4.4 Secretary s Report Sheena McKinney Club Hockey Canada Puck Buck Redemption This program allows members to purchase items from Hockey Canada and receive redemption points that can be put towards their next season registration. Information will be posted on the bulletin board. 4.5 Ice Scheduler s Report Alison Holditch Practice Schedule Update The ice times will stand at this time. A new schedule will be posted once novice teams are slotted into their practice times Tournaments The following are the tournament dates currently decided on. Peewee October 5,6,7 Novice November 23 & 24 Tom Thumb December 7 th Atom, Bantam and Midget still to be determined Security Dave to talk to the town in regards to the rink personal acting as security during games. This is a practice in many other communities Town Meeting Allison has met with Adam Clarkson as he will be handling hockey communication. The town sends its appreciation for the support from HLMHA for the Peak Performance Hockey Camp.

4 5.0 New Business 5.1 Shoot to Score Due to finances HLMHA will have to decline the Shoot to Score. Dave will inform them. 6.0 Next Meeting The next meeting will be Wednesday October, 23 rd 6:00pm at High level Arena 6.1 Adjournment Board Meeting Adjourned at 8:34pm

5 Notes from the HA Zone 1 Meeting September 15, 2013 Zone 1 Positions Stayed the same as last year Craig Reid operations rep Jamie Salm Minor Council rep Janet Fairless Admin Michelle Malbeouf Discipline and Sanctions Marty Tingstad Officials HC Affiliation change (This is the big change for HLMHA) Players may only play as an affiliate for a maximum of 10 League and Provincial games per season, unless their original team is finished for the season. After 10 games they are only available to their original team, and are ineligible to play for their affiliated team. If they play game 11, they coach is subject to suspension for playing an ineligible player. Suspensions for this have typically been between 5-10 games. Exhibition and tournament games do not count toward the maximum of 10. This rule change may eliminate ghost teams. However, HA in Red Deer will be looking into our concerns next week, so we may be able to work something out. Clarification regarding Initiation/Novice affiliation: Affiliation between Initiation teams is not allowed. This means that we can not have two Initiation teams and allow the players to play on both teams. If we need to do that, we would have to register the teams as Novice. (Not as difficult as it sounds, ask Steve for clarification) Initiation can affiliate up to the Novice division. They affiliation limit would apply, however it wouldn t matter as they do not play league/provincial games. Novice can still affiliate across between the two teams, or up to the Atoms. The affiliation rule would apply, but the limit is reduced to 5 games. HA Provincials Provincial Entry Process In previous years, all teams were registered as Provincial Teams, and they would have to OPT OUT if they did not want to play provincials. This has now been reversed, and teams will have to OPT IN, by Dec 1 st. Body Checking update. As previously discussed in our HLMHA meetings; the rule has not changed, just the age. They have added reference material to the HA website to help. Carry over Suspensions: Listed on the All Peace Website. Our only player with a carryover suspension is Austin Lizotte, with 4 games. Match on official penalties: Off ice officials, such as penalty boxes and timekeepers, are included under this rule.

6 Coach Clinics: The coach stream clinics are 2 parts now, online and a 3 hour classroom/ice session. Coaches must do the online portion before they can register for a classroom session, so that will have to be completed by late Oct. (see the info package for more) The Safety clinic is now entirely online. Alberta Winter Games: 2 nd year Peewee. Tryouts are Dec 6-8 in Sexsmith. They are also looking for coaches and team staff. Arctic Winter Games: Bantam Males (1999 & 2000). Tryouts are Dec in Manning.
