HOFSTRA-SACRED HEART LAST YEAR April 5, Freshman Jay Card and junior Tom Dooley each scored five goals as the 20 th -ranked Hofstra Pride defeated the Pioneers of Sacred Heart, 20-3, in a Colonial Athletic Association contest at James M. Shuart Stadium Saturday. The Pride, who snapped a two-game losing skid, improved to 4-4 on the season and 2-1 in CAA play while the Pioneers fell to 6-3 overall and 1-2 in conference action. Card, a newcomer from Caledon, Ontario, Canada, posted careerbests of five goals, two assists and seven points in the Pride onslaught. Dooley, the junior from Yorktown, NY, tallied five goals for the fourth time in his career and fell just one tally short of his career best of six goals, set against Sacred Heart in Dooley also assisted on one goal. Sophomore Dan Stein, from Merrick, NY, added a season-best three goals and career-bests of three assists and six points in the contest. The Pioneers opened the scoring just 1:58 into the game as Tony Tanzi fed Bobby Rushton for his 11 th goal of the year. Three-and-ahalf minutes later, Card scored the first of his five goals, going around the cage and beating Sacred Heart goalie Ricardo Vargas from six yards. The Pioneers took a 2-1 lead with 4:21 to play in the period when Dan Casciano fed Bobby Karl for his sixth goal of the year and his fourth on the man-up.

2 But Hofstra sophomore Tom Interlicchio's third goal of the year with 52 seconds remaining in the period tied the game and started a fivegoal run for the Pride. Hofstra tallied four goals in the first 3:24 of the second quarter as junior Tom Dooley scored his 10 th goal of the year and his second man-up tally just eight seconds into the period. Card notched his second of the game 1:10 later before sophomore Dan Stein picked up a loose ball behind the cage and went around and beat Vargas at the 12:01 mark. Just 25 seconds later Card notched his third hat-trick of the year with a man-up goal from 10 yards to boost the Pride lead to 6-2. After Tanzi scored his 10 th goal of the year with 8:58 to play in the half to close the gap to 6-3, the Pride scored four more in the second quarter as part of a 14-0 run to close the contest. Card, Interlicchio, and Michael Unterstein each scored unassisted goals over a twominute span midway through the second and Dooley scored his second of the game, from Ryan Carter, with 1:20 to play in the half to give the Pride a 10-3 lead at halftime. Hofstra outshot Sacred Heart, in the first half. With the game getting out-of-hand, the frustration level rose for the Pioneers, as they were whistled for seven second-half penalties. The Pride made them pay on six of the seven man-up situations with Dooley notching three goals, and Stein, Michael Colleluori and Michael Unterstein recording the other three. Hofstra was also twofor three on the man-up in the first half for an eight-of-10 day on the extra-man. A son, a brother, a fiancé, a teammate, a classmate and a friend, Nick cherished and honored all of these titles. He will be remembered for the love and joy that he brought to so many people and a spirit that will last forever. The Pride will continue to wear a circular patch on their jerseys in 2008 in his memory. The Hofstra lacrosse program is active in fund-raising activities in the fight against lymphoma. Five minutes later, Hollingsworth took a pass from Feinberg and buried a 10-yard bullet behind Orlando. Right off the ensuing face-off -seven seconds later-muldoon notched his third of the season off a pass from Feinberg to boost the lead to 10-3 with 6:17 to play in the third. Muscarella, who sat out last week's opener against UMass, made a run down the right side of Brown goalie Jordan Burke and fired a bullet that beat the senior netminder high and to the far side to tie the game at 10-all with 1:08 to play. The last 58 ticks were highlighted by solid defense before Pride defender was whistled for a slash with five seconds to play. In the first overtime Dooley had a point-blank shot at the gage for the Pride that was blocked by Brown senior defender Ryan Cassil before Orlando came up big on a shot by Muldoon with 48 seconds left. The Bears took its last possession of the first OT with 23 seconds remaining but Hofstra junior co-captain Adam Swarsen stripped his Brown opponent of the ball with nine seconds to play to send the game into a second overtime. GAME 4 MARCH 14, 2009 VS. #3 PRINCETON: Freshman goalie Andrew Gvozden shined in his second collegiate start, registering nine saves as the 12th-ranked Pride led wire-to-wire in a 9-7 victory over previously undefeated No. 3 Princeton Saturday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium. Princeton outshot Hofstra, 33-24, though Gvozden was up the challenge. The Millersville, MD native came off an 11-save debut against Johns Hopkins last week by making five second half saves. Hofstra was also 17-for-19 on clears. Slow starts plagued Hofstra in the first three games, though the Pride shrugged off those problems by jumping out to a 2-0 lead after the first quarter. Gvozden made one save while facing eight shots to blank the Tigers through the first 15 minutes. Tom Interlicchio fired a sharp-angle shot to the low-right side of the cage, opening the scoring nearly seven minutes into the contest. Muscarella followed with a running wind-up shot eight yards away from the crease just 48 seconds later. Scott MacKenzie put Princeton on the board almost three minutes into the second quarter before Hofstra answered right back at the 9:30 mark. Tom Dooley s deft flip pass to Ryan Carter near the crease set up a quick-strike goal, making it 3-1. A key defensive play extended Hofstra s momentum late in the first half. Gvozden s point-blank stick save on Mark Kovler s shot initiated a breakout the other way. Dooley completed the momentum shift, taking Card s pass and firing it into the net for a 4-1 lead with 3:06 remaining. Hofstra went into halftime on a high note thanks to Carter s goal with five seconds left. Out of a Princeton timeout, Colleluori found Carter for a bullet from 10 yards out, giving the Pride a 5-1 edge at the break, chasing Tigers starting goalie Tyler Fiorito. Senior midfielder Anthony Muscarella (Wantagh, NY) tallied a hat trick and fellow senior middie Ryan Carter (San Francisco, CA) added a pair of goals as the Pride defeated a top-3 opponent for the second consecutive season. Hofstra improved to 3-1 with all victories coming against nationally-ranked opponents while the Tigers fell to 4-1. Senior attacker Tom Dooley (Yorktown Heights, NY) added a goal and one assist as Hofstra fended off Princeton s four-goal fourth quarter rally for its first win over a top-10 opponent since knocking off No. 1 Johns Hopkins in May Hofstra Head Coach Seth Tierney also defeated his uncle and mentor in Tigers Head Coach Bill Tierney for the first time. The elder Tierney led Princeton to victories over Hofstra in the first two meetings. Hofstra surged to a 5-1 halftime lead and both schools racked up two goals in the third quarter to keep the Pride s lead at four goals. Muscarella added his fifth goal of the season 2:42 into the third and freshman Brad Loizeaux (Mullica Hill, NJ) tallied his first NCAA goal just three minutes later as the Pride built its largest lead of the game at 7-1. Yet Princeton s leading scorer Jack McBride notched his 10th and 11th goals of the season to cut the deficit to four heading into the final quarter. The Tigers moved within 8-6 and enjoyed a man advantage before the Pride killed a penalty for an illegal check at the 7:34 mark. The penalty kill galvanized Hofstra into a key insurance goal with 6:09 left when Muscarella took Carter s pass and fired a 12-yard laser that made it 9-6. That goal proved critical when Tommy Davis made it a two-goal game with 1:24 remaining. Princeton had a chance to make it a onegoal game before turning it over just inside the final minute. Hofstra got possession back and ran out the clock for the win.
