1 MAY BOARD MEETING MAY 15, 2012 President Neal Krauss called the May Board meeting to order at Those in attendance: Michael Dudzinski Jason Osbahr Andy Ketterson Kevin Neumann John Sempeck Brenda Orr Tony Kopf Neal Krauss Jodi Kozol Absent: Mark VanderMeulen Michael Hughes Old Business: Welcome by the President to all the new and re-elected Board members. Mike Dudzinski made a motion for accept the March and April minutes as presented. John Sempeck seconded. All in favor, none opposed. Treasurer Mark VanderMeulen (absent) presented by Neal Krauss: Travel/Select team rebates: waiting on addresses and make check payable to information for the 2 Squirt Select teams. Waiting on final submission of a couple of check request forms from Aimee on Mite Select to close them out. Meeting with Andy next week to finalize rebate for the Girls teams. All other travel teams are complete and checks have been mailed out Budget planning: I have a meeting set up with Kevin to complete the HS club budget. House budgets are done based on tentative ice schedule and will have recommended fees ready for the June Board meeting. Travel budgets will be completed after coaches are selected and practice times are finalized. Registration: planning to open online registration process on Monday, July 9 th at 5 pm. IP-Mite Director Jason Osbahr: So far our numbers are not as good as last summer, only about 50 kids signed up. Hopefully we will have more in the June 5 th session.

2 Working on the Growth and Retention position. However, would like to have it be a committee and not just one person. There would be 5 committee members with Jason as the chairman. Each person would have a focus: New player growth and retention Girls growth o Make program attractive to new players o Scholarship fund, Girls hardship Marketing and Fundraising o 2/2 has grants available for U8 retention o Get 2 new players, retain 2 players Former player growth and retention Rink involvement/learn to Skate Once we get this going, would like to have a budget for this project. Eventually to become self-sufficient. Working on having an IP-Mite newsletter go out. The information for these positions will be put in and mailed out to all the families. Aimee has it all set up for the IP-Mites, but may be other interested. Squirt-Bantam Director Michael Hughes (absent) presented by Neal Krauss: Spring Joust Tournament update: It was a success. Each team made money and received refunds because of this event. We have applied for the Douglas County Visitor Improvement Fund Grant for the coming year again. Already working on plans for next year s tournament same time frame (March 2013). Looking at having some power skating sessions set up. Maybe in August (6 th & 9 th ). Trying to work out a schedule with Brian Knierem. This would be a pre-season skating session. House Grading: Would like to have the house grading weekend on 9/21/12 9/22/12. On Friday, 9/21/12, on hour of ice for each division for players to come out and loosed up before the actual grading the next two days (Optional with coach instruction). Saturday, 9/22/12, skills/scrimmage session. Two sessions per division at 90 minutes per (total ice slots 90 minutes). Evaluations/Outputs to be completed by 10/1/12, with the team rosters presented to head coaches on 10/1/12. Any adjustments will then be made to level set the teams. Practice tentatively to start October 6 th. Will review with Jason regarding his grading system and then review with Ross regarding ours that we have had in place and see what tweaks we might be able to make. Select Program: potentially two Squirt teams (two teams share ice), one Peewee team (one hour practice full sheet), and one Bantam team (one hour practice-full sheet). Would like proposed Select teams to practice on Thursday evenings one after another.

3 NHL: likely continuing to participate with the Nebraska Hockey League for the season of This group will reconvene in June 2012 Steve McAlpine is the OHC point of contact for the league. An application to host the 2014 High School Nationals has been submitted. We need to put together a steering committee for this and get the following involved: City of Ralston, City of Omaha, Ralston Arena (Curtis Webb), Chamber of Commerce for both Ralston and Omaha, Omaha Sports Commission, MWAHA (Les Teplicky and Jena Cuozo), Midwest High School Hockey (John Sempeck), Omaha High School Hockey (Kevin Neumann) and Omaha Hockey Club (Neal Krauss and Mike Dudzinski). Girls Hockey Director Andy Ketterson: Would like to have girls Black and White game and use it as a recruiting tool. Have the girls bring a friend and have a skate after the game. Looking at having a girl s camp sometime in August. Have a long weekend to start and work up from there. May is the BIG planning month for girls. One big question is how to make girl s hockey more affordable. High School League Director Kevin Neumann: Getting the HS steering committee going again, will meet next month, different day. Looking at having a meeting with the officials. We will need to review the HS Rules and Regs for the next season. Need to get organized for the Fall Freeze. Last year we had practice for 4 weeks prior to the games. Maybe having other High School teams in the area come and play as well (KC, Des Moines, etc.). Need to see if Ralston is available for this. HS Midwest League Director John Sempeck: About three weeks ago applications for coaches went out. We had an Advisory and Coaching committee put together. They ranked the candidates from 1 to 6 and discussed the coaching selections. They basically recommended two head coaches: John Thomas who will oversee both teams and Andy Blaszak as the associate head coach. John Sempeck made a motion to for the Board to approve these two as the coaches. Seconded by Tony Kopf. There was some discussion regarding the time commitment that JT would have considering the issues with the website. JT answered this inquiry to the committee s satisfaction. All in favor, none opposed, Neal Krauss and John Sempeck abstained. The Midwest HS has made some changes. They moved from a 32 game to a 28 game schedule. Peoria looked at being picked up. Up to 13 teams.

4 The verbal commitment to send a team to Nationals needs to be in by November 15 th. The actual paperwork and money needs to be in by January 31 st. Midwest HS sent in $500 to Nationals last year, can this be refunded? Per Jena, since they did not qualify due to not enough players, it may not be refundable. Varsity is putting into the budget for Nationals. Is the HS Club team going to challenge the Midwest HS to go to Nationals? If we are the host team, we would be allowed to put in two teams. The waiver for not pure teams going to Nationals is only good for 3 years. This year is the final year. Les will need to resubmit to USA Hockey to get this reapproved. Midwest HS can enter as Midgets into Tier II, U18 or U16 then the HS Club can go too. Something to think about: if we need a tournament it would need to be the 2 nd or 3 rd weekend in February. A team must be designated by March 1 st (no fees to register for Nationals). Ice Scheduler Brenda Orr: The preliminary ice schedule is done. Just waiting on specific teams and requirements. Travel Director Tony Kopf: Looks like we are going to order 115 sets of jerseys, not including the girls which Andy will get to Tony by the end of the week. Looks like we will have the following teams this year: Squirt AA & A, Peewee AA, A and A2 and Bantam A It would be nice if we could get the coaches and asst coaches CPR certified by the end of summer. The rink does have an AED. We also need to have concussion training for all coaches. A coaching committee has been selected and needs Board approval. The member tentatively are: Jeff Brown, Dave Sorenson and Rick Bruneteau. This discussion will be tabled for closed meeting after this Board meeting. Coaching applications are due by May 31 st. Interviews will be held in time to get Board approval of coaches at the June meeting. Need to have a verbal commitment regarding teams going to Nationals by October 15 th. Playoffs for Tier II if needed would be the first week of March with Nationals April 3-7, Omaha AAA Director Neal Krauss: Neal Krauss made a motion for Kirk Hutton to be the appointed AAA Director for this next year. Andy Ketterson second. All in favor, none opposed.

5 U16 tryouts were two weekends ago and over 50 players were here. Tenders went out to players. U18 tryouts are in mid-june. U14 Todd Jones to be the coach and the tryouts are posted on the website. Vice President Mike Dudzinski: Working on a Code of Ethics and a Code of Conduct for all directors. Hoping to have these done and present at the next closed Board meeting for discussion. President Neal Krauss: Through the summer, the Board will be having planning sessions the first Tuesday of every month at 6pm. New Business: Andy Ketterson would like our organization to adopt the ruling that Minnesota has in place regarding checking from behind. Andy will get the actual ruling by the next meeting for everyone to review. Moylan is now offering advertising at the rink. 25% (after costs) will go to the player. We should look at getting Google Docs for information with the turnover of Directors. That way, all information would be in one place and not on different computers.
