The Pride was led by junior attack Chris Unterstein with two goals and sophomore Athan Iannucci with a goal and an assist. Freshman goalie James Tuohy posted 12 saves in his college debut for the Pride. Starker added an assist for a five point night while Heidenberger also added an assist to his two goals for the Wildcats. Villanova junior goalie Joe Canuso stopped 17 shots. After exchanging first quarter goals by Hofstra s Chris Unterstein at the 5:36 mark and Villanova s Dan Fanelli 35 seconds later, Hofstra took a 3-1 lead at halftime on second quarter goals by Iannucci, his 10 th of the year, and junior John Keysor his team leading 12 th. Villanova came out firing in the third quarter, taking 17 shots and scoring seven times, despite six saves by Hofstra s freshman goalie in the period. The Wildcats got unanswered goals by Eric Webber, Chris MacDonald and a man-up goal by Matt Starker to take a 4-3 lead with 6:16 to play in the period. But Hofstra junior midfielder Rob Bonaguro scored his seventh of the season, from 12 yards out, to tie the game at 4-4 with 3:36 to play in the third. The Wildcats then went on a 7-0 run with Starker scoring three goals and Heidenberger adding two in the spurt to put the game away. CHRIS UNTERSTEIN NAMED CAA Co-PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Senior Chris Unterstein, recorded six goals and three assists in two Pride victories last week and has been named the CAA Co-Player of the Week. He tied his careerhigh with four goals against Towson, including the gamewinner in overtime. Chris, the oldest of three Unterstein brothers on the Pride roster, also tallied two goals, and equaled his season-high with three assists against Army. He now leads the Pride in scoring with 30 points on 15 goals and 15 assists. Unterstein shares the award this week with Villanova s Andy German. DOOLEY NAMED CAA ROOKIE OF THE WEEK: Freshman Tom Dooley posted four goals and one assist in the two victories last week and has been named the CAA Rookie of the Week. He tallied three goals against Army and added a goal and an assist against Towson. Dooley, who has six multipoint games this season, has recorded 13 goals and four assists in eight games this season. The Rookie of the Week Award is the second time that the CAA has honored Dooley this year. On March 14, he was named the CAA Player of the Week after scoring three goals in a win over the defending national champions, John Hopkins. Senior face-off specialist Joe Mascaretti has won 67 of 99 face-offs during the last five games including 14 of 17 against Army and 14 of 23 against Sacred Heart. He has won 59% (89-150) of his face-offs this season... Senior defender Brett Moyer continues to show why he is one of the best defenders in the game. He recorded five takeaways against Sacred Heart, five ground balls against Army, and had five ground balls and forced four turnovers against Towson. He has posted four or more takeaways in six games. He leads the team with 28 caused turnovers... Senior midfielder John Keysor recorded his seventh consecutive multi-point game last Wednesday against Sacred Heart. IANNUCCI JOINS MOYER ON THE TEWAARATON TROPHY WATCH LIST: Hofstra junior attackman Athan Iannucci has joined senior defender Brett Moyer on the 2006 Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List, the Tewaaraton Trophy Foundation announced on March 27. The Tewaaraton Trophy honors the top male and female varsity collegiate lacrosse player in the United States. Hofstra alumnus Doug Shanahan, a member of the 2006 U.S. National team that will compete in the World Championships in July in Canada, captured the first Tewaaraton Trophy in The list is just an early season indicator on who to watch for during the 2006 season. The list will be narrowed down to five finalists by the end of the year and the award is presented annually following the season. HOFSTRA HAS FOUR TOP 15 WINS IN 2006: With the 10-9 victory over #12 Towson on March 31, the Pride picked up its fourth top 15 win of the 2006 season. In 2005, Hofstra faced 10 teams who were ranked in the top 20 at the time of their contest. The Pride recorded a 4-6 mark in those games. HOFSTRA AGAINST NUMBERS 11 THROUGH 20: Hofstra is 8-9 in their last 17 games against teams ranked from 11 through 20. 11 2006 HOFSTRA GAME SUMMARIES GAME 1 February 26, 2006 at #10 Massachusetts: Pride junior Athan Iannucci tied his career-high with four goals but Minuteman senior Sean Morris stole the show with an eight point performance to lead #10 Massachusetts to an 11-7 victory over #18 Hofstra at Richard Garber Field in the season opener for both teams. Morris, who tallied four goals and one assist in UMass 12-7 victory over the Pride in 2005, recorded three goals and tied his career-highs with five assists and eight points to lead the Minutemen to their fifth straight win over Hofstra. Iannucci, who added an assist in Sunday s contest, tied his career best with four goals that he achieved three previous times. The Minutemen jumped out to a 3-0 lead on goals by Rory Pedrick, Jake Deane and Sean Morris. The Pride got on the board with just three seconds remaining in the first quarter as senior Rob Bonaguro fed Iannucci for the goal. Massachusetts came out in the second and boosted the lead to 5-1 as Morris picked up his second assist of the game on Andrew Reccione s goal 2:29 into the period, and Jamie Yaman scored off an assist from Brett Garber two minutes later. Iannucci figured in on a Pride goal with 6:58 to play in the half but this time it was Iannucci feeding Chris Unterstein for the man-up goal to cut the deficit to 5-2. But Morris assisted on the next two UM goals, scored by Evan Blum and Jamie Yaman, to boost the UMass lead to 7-2 with 2:08 to play in the half. Iannucci cut the deficit to 7-3 with just 17 seconds remaining in the half off a pass from freshman Mike Colleluori. Hofstra senior John Keysor brought the Pride closer with an unassisted goal 1:34 into the third period. But Morris scored an unassisted goal 45 seconds later and Jim Connolly scored 17 seconds after that, on Rory Pedrick s second assist of the game, to kick the lead up to 9-4. Hofstra freshman Tom Dooley tallied his first college goal with 3:31 to play in the third, off a feed from senior Chris Unterstein. There was good news and more bad news for Brown in the third quarter as the Bears got on the board with three goals but Hofstra scored six more times, including four by Iannucci, to take a 12-3 lead heading into the final quarter. Brown freshman Jack Walsh scored a man-up goal off a feed from Will Davis 1:35 into the period. Walsh repaid the favor four minutes later, feeding Davis who beat Pride goalie Matt Southard (8 saves) on the short side for the goal. But Hofstra got the goal back with 1:27 to play in the first as senior Ryan Lucas took a pass from Bonaguro and fired a 20-yard bullet past Schwartzman for a 4-1 lead after one period. Hofstra boosted the lead to 6-1 at halftime with two goals in the second quarter as freshman Tom Dooley scored from six yards out, off a pass from John Keysor, at the 6:56 mark. It was Dooley s third goal of the year. One minute later, Treubig scored his second of the game off a pass from Athan Iannucci to make it 6-1 at halftime. Iannucci boosted his consecutive game point streak to 19 games. The two teams traded goals in the third quarter as Dooley scored the second of three goals on the day off a pass from Bonaguro at the 6:54 mark before Huntley scored his second of three, from Mark Bryan, a minute later as the Pride kept a comfortable 7-2 lead after three period. Bryan and Huntley combined again on a goal 2:42 into the fourth quarter, this time Bryan scored the goal, to make the 6,448 fans a little antsy in their seats. But Dooley started a 4-0 Hofstra run three minutes later to give Hofstra a commanding 11-3 lead. Sophomore Mike Unterstein scored his second of the season with 5:43 to play, and Athan Iannucci added the final two goals, his 10th and 11th of the year, to close out the Pride scoring. The Blue Jays scored three goals in the final 1:03 as Brian Christopher, Jamison Koesterer and Huntley dented the twine for the 11-6 final. Statistically, the game was even with each team taking 31 shots and JHU picking up 28 ground balls to Hofstra s 25. But the Pride forced 23 Blue Jay turnovers while making only nine. Hofstra s Tewaaraton Trophy candidate, senior defender Brett Moyer recorded four forced turnovers.
