Sophomore Jesse Winchester scored Colgate s last two goals and assisted on Jon Smyth s gamewinner, while classmate Tyler Burton added a goal and two assists, including the primary helper on Smyth s tally. The Raiders finished the game 4-for-10 on the power play, including converting all three of their opportunities in the second period. Ten of Colgate s 20 shots came during extra-man opportunities. Meanwhile, the Raiders killed off all 12 of Brown s power play attempts, including five in the third period, when eight of the Bears 13 shots came when they were a man up. Brown took 12 of their 26 shots during power-play opportunities. Road Warriors Colgate climbed back on the bus this weekend after stopping in Starr Rink last Saturday. The team has played four of their last five games on the road. After tonight s game at Yale, the Raiders next two games are away from Hamilton as they continue league play at Dartmouth and Harvard next weekend. After playing away from home for seven of their first nine games, the Raiders will enjoy a muchdeserved home stand starting Nov. 18. Colgate will play six straight games at Starr Rink, including a two-game series against CCHA foe Western Michigan the weekend after Thanksgiving. Poll Position Colgate s 3-1 win against Bentley garnered the team a few more votes in the USCHO.com/CSTV media poll, but the coaches appeared to be unimpressed, as the Raiders received no votes in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll. In the USCHO poll, Colgate is tops among the teams in the also receiving votes category with 66, just 14 points behind league-mate St. Lawrence, who is ranked 20th. Colgate is one of nine ECACHL schools receiving votes in the USCHO poll. Three - Cornell, Harvard and St. Lawrence - rank among the top 20. Cornell is the only team ranked in the top 15 in the USA Today poll; Harvard, Dartmouth and St. Lawrence are all receiving votes from the coaches. After the Bears came out strong in the first period, Dekanich quickly took the wind out of their sails as he made several acrobatic saves and foiled at least two can t-miss scoring opportunities. With 13:45 left in the first, Brown won a faceoff to Dekanich s right back to the left point. Thirty seconds later, Dekanich was watching the play around the right side of the net when a Brown player came around the left side with the puck, unnoticed by the Raider netminder. The shot on the open side of the net just caught the tip of Dekanich s skate. Later in the game, Dekanich used some acrobatic moves to preserve his shutout. With 7:42 left in the second period, he stuffed a one-timer on the doorstep, moving from post to post, right to left, in the blink of an eye. During the third, he withstood a flurry of shots right in front of the crease that ended with a pile-up in front of the net, but he kept the puck from crossing the goal line. Earlier this season, Dekanich put on a show against UMass-Lowell. He turned aside all 14 shots in the first period, and made 20 saves through two scoreless periods. The first River Hawk goal he allowed occurred after he was knocked out of position by his own defenseman, while the second goal came on a redirected shot. Dekanich finished his season debut with 32 saves and his second career victory. For his efforts, he was named USCHO s ECACHL co-goaltender of the Week. Dekanich made 53 saves in a pair of games against Lake Superior State during Colgate s first road weekend. He helped keep the games close as the Lakers outshot Colgate on the weekend, including taking 29 shots on goal during power-play opportunities. He allowed just one goal against Army, turning aside 21 of 22 Black Knight shots. The only puck that got past him was during a power play with Colgate firmly in control of the game, up 6-0. For the season, Dekanich owns a 1.58 goals against average and.943 save percentage, both of which rank second in the ECACHL. Five of the eight goals he has allowed this season have been power-play scores. He was named to the ECACHL Weekly Honor Roll in each of the first three weeks of the season. For Wilson, it marked his second power-play goal of the year. The last two goals of the game were scored in five-on-five situations. On Saturday, all five goals came when the sides were uneven. Junior Marc Fulton scored his first power-play goal of the year to put Colgate up 1-0, but LSSU capitalized on a power-play chance in each of the three periods to take a 3-1 lead. Then, with 1:05 to play in regulation, senior captain Jon Smyth scored a six-on-five goal with netminder Mark Dekanich on the bench to pull Colgate to within one, 3-2. Both parts of Colgate s special teams made a difference in the Raiders season-opening win against UMass-Lowell. Colgate s penalty-killing unit shut down five UML power plays, including three in the first period, and allowed just five shots when playing with a man down. The Raiders converted two of their five power-play attempts against the River Hawks for a.400 success rate, with goals coming from sophomore Jesse Winchester and Wilson. For the game, Colgate took nine shots when playing with an extra man. Winchester Starts Season On A Roll Sophomore Jesse Winchester has scored at least one point in each of the first six games of the season, giving him a career-long point streak. Winchester ranks second on the team in scoring with five goals and four assists for nine points. He has three power play goals on the season, which is tied for third in the ECAC Hockey League. Last night, Winchester netted each of Colgate s last two goals, both on the power play, and assisted on Jon Smyth s game-winner in the first period. It marked the first multiple-goal game and first threepoint game of his career. Winchester scored the game-winning goal and added an assist in the season-opener against UMass-Lowell. He followed that up by netting the game-tying goal in the 2-2 tie with the Lakers, and registered an assist on Colgate s extra-attacker goal in the Saturday game. Winchester scored Colgate s first goal in the 6-1 win against Army, and assisted on the game-winning goal versus Bentley. Five Raiders Riding Point Streaks Sophomore Jesse Winchester isn t the only Raider on a roll. Four of his teammates enter tonight s game on point streaks of three games or more. Senior Kyle Wilson leads the pack with an eightgame streak that dates back to the final two games of the season. He has 13 points during that streak, including a power-play goal during the second period last night against Brown. (For more on Wilson, see Wilson Enjoys Offensive October. ) Senior captain Jon Smyth has gotten on the score sheet in each of the last four games. He netted an extra-man goal in the second game against Lake Superior State, recorded an assist versus Army, and netted a power-play goal against Bentley. Last night, he got his first game-winning goal of the year with the only even-strength score of the game during the first period, and he added an assist in the second period. Smyth is tied for sixth on the team in scoring with six points on three goals and three assists. Sophomore Tyler Burton is on a three-game point and goal streak. Burton netted Colgate s second goal and earned two assists, including the primary helper on Smyth s game-winner, last night. He posted a goal and an assist versus Bentley, and contributed one goal at Army. For the season, Burton ranks fifth on the team in scoring with seven points on four goals and three assists. Junior Mike Campaner enters tonight s game after recording at least one assist in each of the last three contests. He assisted on Wilson s power-play goal last night, and tied his career best by assisting on all three of Colgate s goals against Bentley. At Army, Campaner scored his first goal of the season and added an assist. This season, he leads Colgate s defensemen in scoring and is tied for third on the team with eight points on one goal and seven assists. Junior Marc Fulton enjoyed a four-game point streak to kick off the campaign, starting with a career-high four points against UMass-Lowell in the Raiders home opener. He added an assist in Colgate s first game at Lake Superior State and a goal on the second night. Versus Army, he assisted on the first goal of Wilson s natural hat trick. After being kept off the scoresheet against Bentley, he recorded an assist last night at Brown. Fulton is tied for third on Colgate s scoring chart with three goals and five assists for eight points.
