2 Red Wings notes: TV slots, Jurco quotes, Hockeyfest James Jahnke, Detroit Free Press 2:55 p.m. EDT July 27, 2015 We have a few Detroit Red Wings notes to cool you down on this way-too-hot-forhockey July day. Forward Tomas Jurco, 22, discussed a few topics with pravda.sk in his native Slovakia. Translated by Google, Jurco said of his new, two-year, $1.8-million contract, which was agreed to on Friday: "Although it took a bit longer than we thought... I am satisfied." Jurco also commented on the back injury that hindered him last season. "I'm not absolutely sure how it will be this year, although we do our best to withstand.... The back still cannot do everything." And on Jeff Blashill replacing Mike Babcock as Wings coach: "Under coach Babcock, I had a slightly different role than that for which I was used to, and I did not comply.... (Blashill) knows me well and knows exactly when I'm most useful for the team.... It is a different kind of person than Babcock. I'm not saying one is good and the other evil. It's not.... You can talk to (Blashill). Players with him have a good relationship. Both have wards with respect, but Babcock is a bit different. Uncommon." NBC today released the 105 NHL games it plans to televise nationally during the season, and the Wings are part of 16 of them (two on NBC and 14 on NBC Sports Network): Oct. 13 Tampa Bay at Detroit, 7:30 p.m., NBCSN Nov. 18 Washington at Detroit, 8 p.m., NBCSN Dec. 8 Detroit at Washington, 7:30 p.m., NBCSN Jan. 17 Philadelphia at Detroit, 7:30 p.m, NBCSN Jan. 20 St. Louis at Detroit, 8 p.m., NBCSN Feb. 3 Detroit at Tampa Bay, 8 p.m., NBCSN Feb. 14 Boston at Detroit, 3 p.m., NBC Feb. 18 Detroit at Pittsburgh, 7 p.m., NBCSN Feb. 21 Detroit at New York Rangers, 7 p.m., NBCSN Feb. 23 Columbus at Detroit, 7:30 p.m., NBCSN Feb. 27 Detroit at Colorado, 8 p.m., NBC (at Coors Field) March 2 Chicago at Detroit, 8 p.m., NBCSN March 13 Toronto at Detroit, 7:30 p.m., NBCSN March 15 Detroit at Philadelphia, 7:30 p.m., NBCSN 2
3 March 28 Buffalo at Detroit, 7:30 p.m., NBCSN April 6 Philadelphia at Detroit, 8 p.m., NBCSN HockeyFest at Joe Louis Arena is set for 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 13. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for kids 12 and younger and go on sale at 10 a.m. Thursday via the Wings and Ticketmaster. On the docket include autograph sessions with current and former Wings, tours of the locker room, photo ops and more. Wings legend Nicklas Lidstrom says Mario Lemieux was the best player he ever faced, according to an interview with Swedish newspaper Expressen, translated by nhl.com. "It was all about Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Steve Yzerman," Lidstrom said. "Lemieux had an incredible reach and some really good skills with his stick. Gretzky had that, too, but he made all the players around him better. Individually, I would say Lemieux was the better player." Lidstrom also said he's now involved in an asset-management company with former Swedish tennis star Stefan Edberg. Detroit Free Press LOADED:
4 Mitch Callahan says he'll be ready for Red Wings camp, but not a return to AHL Peter J. Wallner on July 27, 2015 at 3:49 PM, updated July 27, 2015 at 3:51 PM GRAND RAPIDS, MI Mitch Callahan doesn't want to let a knee injury slow his progress to the NHL and lead him into another season with the Grand Rapids Griffins. The four-year AHL veteran, who underwent knee surgery following a torn right ACL on Feb. 13, expects to be ready and competitive when the Detroit Red Wings open training camp Sept. 19 in Traverse City. "It feels good, doesn't bother me at all," he said Tuesday at the Grand Rapids Griffins Youth Hockey Camp at Griffs Icehouse. "I'll be ready. No problem at all with it (knee) being ready." Callahan, a sixth-round pick (180th overall) in the 2009 NHL draft, had 16 goals, 22 assists and 24 penalty minutes in 48 games last season for the Griffins before he was injured when his skate caught a bad patch of ice at Van Andel Arena. x-defaultmike Callahan had 16 goals in 48 games last season with the Grand Rapids Griffins.MLive.com This year, he wants to avoid a return to the AHL. If he doesn't make the Red Wings, he will have to clear waivers before he would return to the Griffins. "There's always been talk that some teams would be interested if I was on waivers, but it all depends on the timing on everything," he said. "I just want to go in and try and make Detroit. "As much as I love Grand Rapids, I don't want to play in the AHL next year. So I'm trying to do everything possible to play with them (Red Wings) or have a good enough camp for someone else to take me." Callahan, who has stayed in Grand Rapids this summer rehabbing from the injury, participated earlier this month at the Red Wings' development camp in Traverse City. He kept his skating simple the first three days before he began to make cuts. He has recently been at a camp with Red Wings assistant coach David Bernier, "and doing some scrimmaging with them." Callahan expects to get clearance for complete return to all activities on Aug. 12 when he revisits his surgeon in his hometown of Whittier, Calif. He turns 24 on Aug. 17. "The only thing that will be tough is my conditioning because when you take five months off, it's hard to get back," he said. "I mean, it's hard when you take a couple of weeks off." In early September, Callahan plans to go to Detroit and skate with some of the players to "help get me into the pace that I need to be in at camp." 4
5 While in Traverse City he spoke with Jeff Blashill, his new Red Wings coach and former Griffins coach, as well as briefly with new Griffins coach Todd Nelson. "Detroit has told me just to go in and act like nothing has happened to my knee," Callahan said. "Fight for a job and maybe earn a spot or see what happens. So I have to go in with a positive attitude and show everyone that, yeah I had this injury, but I'm not affected by it." Michigan Live LOADED:
