A Winning Tradition NCAA Champions Few schools, in even fewer sports, can match the history, tradition and success of the Johns Hopkins lacrosse program. Since Hopkins first fielded an intercollegiate team in 1883 the Blue Jays have produced some of the greatest players and coaches the game has seen. From its 44 national championships to its 179 First Team All-Americans to its 39 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, the Blue Jays have upheld the highest standards on and off the field. The recent success of the team an record, five trips to the Final Four and two national championships in the last eight years has only served to solidify Hopkins place in the history of the sport, but this is merely the latest in a long line of amazing runs for the Blue Jays. Consider: Johns Hopkins won at least three national championships in every decade from the 1890s through the 1980s. Every player who entered Johns Hopkins from 1965 through 1987 and played at least three years won at least one national championship. Johns Hopkins played in nine straight NCAA championship games from and 14 championship games from There have been many outstanding teams in the history of college lacrosse, but truly great programs withstand the test of time. In the history of college lacrosse the measuring stick always has been and always will be Johns Hopkins. 8

A Winning Tradition A Winning Tradition Since 1883 Johns Hopkins played its first intercollegiate lacrosse game in th Season Johns Hopkins all-time record in men s lacrosse is Wins 39 Straight (.752) The 899 wins Johns Hopkins has accumulated are the most in the history of college lacrosse Johns Hopkins has qualified for the NCAA Tournament in each of the last 39 years. This is the longest active streak of qualifying for the NCAA Tournament in any Division I team sport. 179 First Team All-Americans Since the first All-America team was selected in 1922, Johns Hopkins has had a national record 179 First Team All-America selections. The next closest school has 111 First Team All-America picks. 44 National Championships Johns Hopkins has won a record 44 national championships since claiming its first in Among the 44 are nine NCAA titles, including the most recent in Major Awards Johns Hopkins players have combined to win the Enners (Player of the Year), Turnbull (man of the Year), McLaughlin (Midfielder of the Year), Kelly (Goalie of the Year) and Schmeisser (Defenseman of the Year) Awards a total of 63 times. Hopkins has also produced the Touchstone (Coach of the Year) Award winner four times and the Tewaaraton winner once. Undefeated Seasons The Blue Jay lacrosse team has gone through the season unbeaten and untied nine times, including 2005, when Hopkins rolled to a 16-0 record. The 16-0 record was just the third in the history of Division I lacrosse and the first since Homewood Field Johns Hopkins plays its home games at Homewood Field, commonly referred to as the Yankee Stadium or the Rupp Arena of college la- crosse. The Blue Jays have parlayed the greatest home in the sport into a decided home field advantage. Hopkins enters the 2011 season sporting an amazing (.847) record at Homewood since Straight NCAA Tournaments 9 NCAA Championships 2011 Johns Hopkins Men s Lacrosse Guide

Homewood Field / Gameday 10 Homewood Field - synonymous with the history and tradition of college lacrosse - celebrated its 100th anniversary in From its first event on October 12, 1907 (an 11-5 victory for the varsity men s lacrosse team over the alumni), to the first official varsity contest on October 26, 1907 (a 5-0 victory for Baltimore Medical over the Hopkins football team) to the 100th game in the storied men s lacrosse rivalry between Johns Hopkins and Maryland (a JHU win on April 17, 2004 in front of a standing-room only crowd of over 10,500), the lore of Homewood Field has grown to the point where it is commonly referred to as the Yankee Stadium of college lacrosse. In Recreation and Athletics at Johns Hopkins - A One-Hundred Year History by G. Wilson Shaffer it is noted: Through the efforts of then Johns Hopkins President Daniel Coit Gilman, the Homewood area became a gift by Mr. William Keyser and his cousin, Mr. Samuel Wyman. Though the financial position of the University did not allow full use of the new area for several years, by 1907 the northern tract of land had been drained and graded to provide an athletic field. Over the last 100+ years, the level of devoted fan support that the Blue Jays have received at Homewood Field is unmatched by any other collegiate lacrosse program. Hopkins often attracts capacity crowds of more than 7,000 fans to see the Blue Jays play against the toughest college lacrosse teams in the nation. As a result, the entire community shares in the experience and tradition of Hopkins lacrosse. In 2004, Homewood Field was the site of the 100th alltime meeting between long-time rivals Johns Hopkins and Maryland. A standing-room-only crowd of 10,555 witnessed the historic event. Hopkins has attracted 20 crowds of 6,000 or more since the start of the 2002 season. During the the 2005 season alone the Blue Jays had four crowds in excess of 6,300 and the now-famous Nest, the official JHU student section at home games, made its debut as well. The Nest is now a focal point of JHU s home field advantage, which is most evident in the bottom line - wins and losses. Johns Hopkins is at home under head coach Dave Pietramala and tied an NCAA Division I record with 37 straight home wins from Taking it back even farther, the Blue Jays are (.847) at Homewood Field since 1980 and JHU boasts three of the four longest home winning streaks in Division I history (since 1971) - each longer than 30 or more games. Homewood Field has been the site of numerous all-star and postseason lacrosse contests, including the annual Hall of Fame Classic, the 1975 NCAA Championship, the 1982 & 1998 International Lacrosse Federation World Championships, the 1996 NCAA Quarterfinals and the 1996 women s North/ South All-Star Game. In addition, the field also served as the site of the men s 1998 NCAA South First-Round games, while the 1999 National Collegiate and NCAA III women s lacrosse semifinals and championship games took place at Homewood. In 2000, 2002, and 2005 the NCAA Division I Men s South Quarterfinals took place at Homewood Field, while Homewood once again hosted the NCAA Division I and III women s lacrosse championships in May, A grass playing surface was maintained at Homewood from its inception in 1907 until 1981, when an artificial turf playing surface was first installed on the field. That surface was replaced in 1989 and again in January, After nearly a quarter century of artificial turf, the field was transformed once again during the summer of 2005 when state-of-the-art Sportexe Momentum Turf 151 was installed, enhancing the look and experience at Homewood Field. Construction of the stadium at Homewood Field appears to have taken place in 1908, when permanent seating for 1,500 was added in time for football season. The seating capacity has grown substantially in the 100 years since. Temporary seating on the University Parkway side of Homewood Field was added during lacrosse season for a number of years before a permanent grandstand on the University Parkway side of Homewood Field was completed in 1998 and brought the seating capacity to its current 8,500. Renovations on the home stands took place during the winter of The latest beautification project at Homewood Field took place prior to the 2007 season as signage recognizing the men s lacrosse team s NCAA Championships was added. The nine signs are complemented by a display area under the Schelle Pavilion (near the main entrance to the stadium) recognizing the ILA and USILA titles the Blue Jays have won. The recognition project in the stadium was completed later that fall when signage recognizing conference championships and NCAA Tournament appearances was added for the field hockey, football, women s lacrosse and men s and women s soccer teams. While most noted for serving as the home of the nationallyrecognized men s lacrosse program, the field also serves as the home for the Blue Jays highly successful football, men s and women s soccer, field hockey, and women s lacrosse programs. All of those teams have hosted post-season games at Homewood in the last several years.

Media Exposure The Facts Year after year, the Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse team receives more media coverage than any other lacrosse program in the nation. The Blue Jays can be read about, seen or heard all over the country and the press box at Homewood Field is often overflowing with credentialed media. At the 100th meeting between Johns Hopkins and the University of Maryland during the 2004 season, over 60 media credentials were issued. Print Media The Blue Jays are covered regularly by the Baltimore Sun, the premier newspaper in the country for college lacrosse coverage. In addition, the Washington Post, Washington Times, New York Times, Annapolis Capital and Newsday are among the many newspapers that have prominently featured the Blue Jay lacrosse team during the last several years. National Magazines In the last five years, the Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse team has been featured in Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated on Campus and Sports Illustrated for Kids. The 100th Johns Hopkins-Maryland game at Homewood Field was the only regular-season men s lacrosse game covered by Sports Illustrated during the 2004 season. In addition, Inside Lacrosse and Lacrosse Magazine prominently profile the Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse team on a regular basis. Television Quite simply, Johns Hopkins is the only lacrosse program in the nation to have its own national television agreement. Hopkins and ESPNU have entered into an agreement that will provide for the national broadcast of every Johns Hopkins home men s lacrosse game through the 2014 season. During the 2011 season the Blue Jays will have 13 of their 14 regular season games aired nationally. All games at Homewood Field and games against Towson, UMBC, Syracuse, North Carolina and Maryland will air on the ESPN family of networks. In addition, the Johns Hopkins-Army game at Army s Michie Stadium is one of the featured games on CBS College Sports broadcast schedule this season. Radio Johns Hopkins games air live on ESPN Radio 1300-AM in Baltimore. The radio broadcasts are also available on the official web site of Hopkins athletics ( com) and feature a 15-minute pre-game show and a 10-minute post-game show. Former Blue Jay All-American Larry Quinn will handle the color commentary, while Joe Miller returns for his eighth year of play-by-play. Internet Perhaps no sport has seen as dramatic an increase in cover- age via the internet than lacrosse. Numerous lacrosse web sites have provided in-depth coverage of the Blue Jays through the years and no fewer than three dedicated lacrosse web sites regularly staff Johns Hopkins home games. 12

Media Exposure Since head coach Dave Pietramala arrived in 2001, the Blue Jays have appeared on television 112 times. JHU is in those 112 games. Every Johns Hopkins home men s lacrosse game is televised nationally on ESPNU and 13 of JHU s 14 regular season games in 2011 will be televised Straight NCAA Tournaments 9 NCAA Championships 2011 Johns Hopkins Men s Lacrosse Guide

Community Service For the seventh consecutive year the Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse team em- barked on its Holiday Magic program just before the end of the first semester. The Blue Jays spend a majority of the fall semester raising money, gathering toys, games, school supplies, clothing and other essentials and distribute these items to families and children throughout the Baltimore area in the early part of December. Through the efforts of team members and the coaching staff the Blue Jays have raised more than $65,000 in the last seven years. They have used this money to purchase gifts, food and many other items for various shelters in the state of Maryland. Visit the team s locker room after the middle of November and it resembles the North Pole as players and coaches spend a majority of their free time wrapping hundreds of gifts for distribution. Among the team s initiatives in the seven years of the program (these are just two of the many): Johns Hopkins Tutorial Program Johns Hopkins University sponsors a tutorial program for 120 children each semester who live in Baltimore City. The kids come to Hopkins once each week to receive one-on-one tutoring from 120 Johns Hopkins undergraduates. Many are from the poorest areas of the city, where crime and poverty are evident in the run-down housing they live in and the schools they attend. Members of the team and the coaching staff gather with the kids in early December with each child receiving a gift bag that includes books and school supplies along with toys and games. Playing board games, drawing and reading with members of the team are among the highlights for the kids, who have been coming to Hopkins as part of this program since it was founded in Marian House/The Meeting Ground The Marian House is a transitional house for women that have been incarcerated or have a drug/alcohol problem and don t have the means to provide many of the necessi- ties for their kids. The Blue Jays have supplied over 300 gift bags that included school supplies and at least one toy for kids in this house over the last three years. The Meeting Ground is a homeless and transitional house located on a farm over an hour away from the Johns Hopkins campus (up near the Maryland-Delaware border) and has evolved into the team s signature house. The house is currently home to several families, including nearly 20 children, many of which wear old clothing and shoes with holes in them to school on a daily basis. Each person in the house received, among other items, a new pair of shoes, sneakers or boots, socks, a hat, gloves and a sweatshirt. The kids in the house received a new outfit and pajamas, school supplies and several toys each. In the first year of the initiative, for the use of everyone in the house, the Blue Jays donated a 32-inch television, a DVD/VCR, two bikes and several board games. Each of the mothers received a special care package. In the last four years the team supplied several vacuum cleaners and steam cleaners and purchased a computer for the entire house. 14

All-America Tradition From Doug Turnbull in 1922 to Michael Kimmel in 2010, Johns Hopkins has had a lengthy roster of performers earn First Team All-America honors. Hopkins players have gained first team honors a national-record 179 times since the All-America teams were first introduced in Over the years, the Blue Jays have also had numerous other standouts receive some kind of All-America recognition during their careers. The reasons why Johns Hopkins has produced so many All-America caliber players are simple - a commitment to attract the finest lacrosse talent, a dedicated approach to developing and refining the skills of the game and a legendary list of coaches who have inspired their players to perform at the highest possible level. Today, those principles remain an integral part of the Hopkins lacrosse experience and are the primary reasons why the Blue Jays All-America tradition lives on.
