2 penn state HOCKEY PennStateMensHockey HOCKEY THIS WEEK S MATCHUP Penn State concludes the 2015 fall semester with a single game on Friday against Princeton. The two teams meet for the first time in men s hockey with opening faceoff slated for 7 p.m. at Pegula Ice Arena. GADOWSKY FACES FORMER SQUAD PSU head coach Guy Gadowsky has spent over four years in Hockey Valley, which followed seven years in Princeton. At Princeton, he led the Tigers to a record and two of its three all-time NCAA Tournament appearances (2008, 2009). Gadowsky had over 20 Tigers sign pro contracts including Kevin Wesgarth, who won the 2012 Stanley Cup with the LA Kings. MICHIGAN STATE SERIES RECAP Penn State put an early stamp on Big Ten play with a sweep of Michigan State, out-scoring the Spartans, PSU won the opener, 4-2, before taking the finale, 6-1. The Nittany Lions never trailed all weekend en route to their first sweep over Michigan State. On Friday, PSU raced out to a 4-0 lead with four goals in the second period and on Saturday, jumped to a 3-0 margin after 20 minutes. Andrew Sturtz was involved in three of the four goals on Friday night, scoring twice and adding a helper to match his career-high three points. His unassisted goal 10 seconds into the second period was the fastest to start a frame in program history. David Godowin scored a power play goal for a 2-0 lead, while Vince Pedrie tallied his second goal of the year for a 4-0 lead. Matthew Skoff made 31 saves, yielding two goals in the third period with the game well in hand. Skoff improved to this season and is unbeaten in his last six starts. In Saturday s 6-1 rout, PSU tallied its largest win by margin over the Spartans. PSU went up 3-0 early before scoring the final three goals of the game after an early second-period MSU tally. Eric Scheid scored the game s first two goals just 60 seconds apart and only four minutes into the game. PSU connected on three of their 10 shots in the period as Ricky DeRosa made it 3-0 with less than three minutes. David Glen, Kenny Brooks and Vince Pedrie capped the scoring for the 6-1 win. Erik Autio tallied his first multi-point game with two assists. Eamon McAdam was again terrific in net, conceding just one goal with 29 saves to improve to UNBEATEN STREAK RUNS TO EIGHT Penn State recorded its first undefeated month (4-0-2) as a Division I program in November and with two wins vs. MSU now has a program-best eight-game unbeaten streak, which was last achieved in January-February, Since Nov. 1, PSU has allowed just 1.38 goals per game, which is second only to Quinnipiac s PSU s 11 goals allowed are second only to Providence s 10. Led nation in shots per game (45.00) and shot margin per game (+15.12) in those eight games. NITTANY LIONS SHUT THE DOOR During PSU s eight-game unbeaten stretch, Penn State goaltenders both ranked in the top seven in GAA (Eamon McAdam, 3rd at 1.25; Matthew Skoff, 7th at 1.44) and save percentage (McAdam 3rd at.958, Skoff 7th at.950). Penn State s goaltending has been superb of late, conceding no more than two goals in a game since Oct. 30. The goaltending duo of Eamon McAdam and Matthew Skoff combined a school-record shutout streak of 151 minutes, 13 seconds, shattering the previous record by 29 minutes. SKOFF BACK ON TRACK Matthew Skoff is in his last six outings, allowing just 10 goals in 418-plus minutes following the Notre Dame game (7 GA in 44 minutes). Skoff has a terrific.936 save percentage and a paltry 1.76 goals-against average in his last five games. Skoff is on a career-best six-game unbeaten streak. His previous best was five (5-0-0) from Jan. 26, 2013 to Oct. 11, MCADAM CONTINUES IMPROVING Eamon McAdam is having the best start to a season by a PSU netminder in terms of record with a mark. McAdam has given up just four goals once this season in what was arguably his finest performance of the season (Oct. 30 vs. St. Lawrence). The junior out of Perkasie, Pennsylvania has allowed just nine even-strength goals this season in 478+ minutes. After going his freshman season, McAdam is in his last 18 decisions. This season s 2.01 GAA and.933 save percentage are currently career bests. GETTING AHEAD, STAYING AHEAD Penn State is one of the best teams in the nation when it comes to scoring goals with a lead. PSU ranks third nationally with 37 goals scored with a lead, second only to St. Cloud State (42) and Boston College (39). The Nittany Lions are when scoring the first goal of a game and have been perfect in closing out leads: when leading after two periods. MULTI-GOAL SCORERS Penn State leads the nation with 11 two-goal scorers this season. Boston College and St. Cloud State have received nine performances with at least two-goals from their skaters. Penn State s Andrew Sturtz leads the team with three multi-goal games and is one of eight nationally to achieve the feat. Chase Berger and Dylan Richard are the SCOUTING THE TIGERS The much-improved Princeton Tigers are on the season and in ECAC Hockey play. The Tigers are coming off an away sweep of Brown and then-no. 10 Yale last weekend. The road sweep was the program s first since Feb. 8-9, 2013 at Colgate and Cornell. Princeton has already matched its win total from all of (4-23-3) and exceeded its win total in conference play (2-18-2). The Tigers two wins over teams that were ranked by the USCHO at the time: W, 3-0 over No. 20 Clarkson and 4-2 over No. 10 Yale. In both games last weekend, Princeton jumped out to 2-0 leads only to see the home teams tie the score. PU would score a go-ahead goal in each instance and add an empty-netter for the 4-2 wins. Princeton is at home, in true road games and on neutral ice. The Tigers are scoring 2.25 goals per game, while allowing 2.75 a game. PU averages shots on net while scoring at a 7.3 percent clip. Princeton is giving up shots on goal per game, which is tied for the most in Division I men s hockey with AIC. PU s power play is 5-for-38 (.132), while the penalty kill is an excellent 36-for-40 (.900), which is tied-fourth in the country. Princeton commits 3.5 penalties per game. Princeton has a balanced attack with three skaters scoring four goals apiece: Ryan Kuffner, Eric Robinson and Max Veronneau. Kuffner and Alex Riche are second on the squad with four assists apiece, while David Hallisey has the most helpers with five. Junior Colton Phinney has posted outstanding numbers this season: 2.38 GAA,.940 save percentage and a shutout. Phinney has started all 12 games after starting 28 of 29 games in Princeton is led by head coach Ron Fogarty who is in his second season with the Tigers. Fogarty (Colgate 85) has a record of at PU and a career mark of , which includes seven years at Adrian College in Division III. THE BERGER CONNECTION PSU freshman Chase Berger s older brother, Jack Berger, served as team captain for the Tigers during a four-year career and played for Gadowsky in WELCOME TO HOCKEY VALLEY
